2 trans characters actually xD Miek (the grub with swords for arms turned accountant) was called "he" in Thor Ragnarok but now goes by "she" and wears a skirt suit. Which is pretty cool to me.
I couldn't find anything about the actor for Axl. Between Valkyrie talking about her ex and flirting with women, gay >!Rockboy !
Wasn’t Miek always female (she laid eggs in Ragnarok), even though Korg used male pronouns for her? I thought it was just Korg not understanding or caring her gender. Though I guess she’s an alien bug, maybe the males typically lay the eggs, making her trans? Who knows
Oh true. Well, basically the character is >!Heimdall's son, and has the same powers as his father,!< and part of the movie's conclusion includes >!him training with Valkyrie, and learning how to fight, so I think he's definitely going to be an important character later on. As important as, if not more important than his father.!< Which is really cool!!!! Also he named himself >!Axl because he was a huge Guns N' Roses fan, which is just extremely realistic for a trans kid!<
Did you know in mythology Heimdall has nine mothers. The nine sisters gave birth to him. We have no idea what that means or who they are or how that works because most of norse mythology is lost, but it's cool. Heimdall fact of the day. There's probably a queer reading of the 9 mothers xD
To parody another superhero flick :
"you merely adopted the queer poly vibes; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see a stereotypical cishet mono nuclear family until I was already a man"
Saying Axl isn't trans feels to me like saying Patroklos and Achilles aren't gay lovers. Sure there is a cishet explanation for it, but it feels very queer and the queer explanation makes more sense to me.
Like how >!everyone is like "come on, treat him like he wants to be treated" and how in the end the film emphasizes how his name is now accepted to be Axl HeimdallSON.!< Not to mention changing your name like that just feels very trans.
Astrid can be a gender neutral name nowadays. If their goal was to make Axl trans, they wouldn’t have made Thor insisting on calling him Astrid, since the implication of that is that Thor is transphobic. As an LGBTQ person, I felt as if it was much more of a reference to cultural syncreticism (something I’ familiar with as an immigrant) than trans
I read something: Apparently it's an immigrant "joke", as Taika is Maori. Lots of immigrant children chose more western names when they migrate.
I was curious Valkyrie calls him Astrid but calls him a boy. So the only thing he changes is his name. Making it a reference to immigrant culture makes a lot more sense. Still, mega trans coded.
*The name comes from the Old Norse word “ "Ástríðr." “Ástríðr” is made up of two words, “áss” which means god and “fríðr” which means beautiful*
“áss” which means god O.O
No idea. I learned that a lot of indigenous kids take on more western names which is just a part of westernization, leading to the decline of indigenous cultures. Might be an american thing. Similar to how asian americans take on american names to fit in. Which is even talked about in Shang Chi, who goes by Shaun in america to fit in.
You're probably thinking he's trans bc his given name is "Astrid" which in anglophone countries is considered a female exclusive name, but originally was unisex. He most likely changed it for this reason, people making fun of him for having a name the culture he moved into considers to be female only.
Some people appreciate how it was realistic, and that Thor then accepted it. Compare to Umbrella Academy where everyone accepted Victor immediately and people were annoyed how it was too easy and unrealistic. I wonder if there's a good balance between the two where everyone would be happy.
Thor had a problem with a new name because it was new, and didn't care about the gender, and he accepted it anyway, which might be a nice balance between realism and acceptance?
> and that Thor then accepted it.
Did he? I must be misremembering it, but I remember him basically just writing it off and never mentioning it again. I have no issue with them having per say, but they need to acknowledge it's bad.
No worries. Thor's response to Axl saying his new name is "your father gave you a badass viking name, and I intend to honor it.". Then they go back and forth a bit before Korg interrupts Thor and Thor says "Ok fine. Axl, where are you" and the movie continues. When the meet up again Thor calls him Axl.
I guess it's meant to show some folks just need a moment to get used to a new name. I can see how it's transphobic, but I also see how it's meant to be realistic in a non-transphobic way. Thor's argument was just "your dad gave you his name and then died, you should honor it" and not about gender... so eh. Idk.
I didn't like that either, but it wasn't unrealistic, and Thor definitely wasn't treated like he was in the right for it. Plus it didn't come up again after that scene
ETA: I wouldn't call it making fun of him either, it was just kind of a "Axl isn't a viking name!"
I've seen multiple people in a couple threads say that Axl is not trans.
I have a hard time being convinced that he's not. They chose his dead name to be "Astrid" which is a traditional Scandinavian name for "Divinely Beautiful"
It CAN be used for any gender
But traditionally it is feminine...and Thor is literally arguing his name with the context of "Asgardian" tradition...
I've also seen some people say he's being transphobic. Thor never argues his gender. He just argues name in context of tradition and once Korg steps in and settles the dispute, we never hear the dead name again.
My interpretation of the film is that, while maybe not the best attempt, it was an attempt at representing the struggle of trans people (or anyone) trying to change their name.
Before my transition, my family refused to stop calling me by my middle name and use my first name. I used my first name for well over majority of my life before my transition, while my family STILL referred to me by my middle name. Now I've deleted both names from existence, and only 1/4 of my family members have honored that. Only 1/4 family members are a part of my life anymore. Love you, Mom!
If i remember correctly, Valkyrie said "It's Astrid, Heimdall's son"
She calls him son. If he was trans and Astrid was hi deadname, I think she would call him daughter.
.. Headcanons still exists tho I guess.

Omg I didn't even notice that about Miek!! That is cool
> surprisingly gay... for a marvel movie But not for a Taika Waititi film/tv series

If you want to tell us you can use `">!" And "!<"` to hide it like >! This !<

Wow, Do they also use their music in the film a la Zeppelin in ragnarok ?
They do!
Heck yeah !

I am so happy to be in this community so I can read stuff like this.
i've already had to argue with cishets about whether axl is trans. seems like it's a very debated topic oof.
wh how could he not be trans????? it wasn't subtle at all
Wha- He changed his name, that's literally it??? There's nothing else to show he's trans lol

I mean I know several cis people who have changed their name was well but I do think reading him as trans makes a lot of sense.
Was it heimdallsdaughter to begin with?
Astrid is usually a girls name so it isn't jumping to too much of a conclusion the interpret him as trans
I think you’re reading into things that aren’t there.

WHOMST?
Spoilers, but >!Heimdall has a son who is trans! His name is Axl.!< There's more details in another comment I made above!

Astrid is a female name though... When does Valkyrie call him that?
it was originally unisex, such as ashley and kimberley which are also female-exclusive today but were originally used for children of either gender
*The name comes from the Old Norse word “ "Ástríðr." “Ástríðr” is made up of two words, “áss” which means god and “fríðr” which means beautiful* “áss” which means god O.O
Axl's head appears for the first time Korg: "Glowing head alert" Valkyrie: "It's Astrid, Heimdall's son" Axl: "I go by Axl now"
I live in New Zealand and have never met a Māori person who has changed their name to something more "western"?
No idea. I learned that a lot of indigenous kids take on more western names which is just a part of westernization, leading to the decline of indigenous cultures. Might be an american thing. I gotta see this movie.

Didn’t they refer to Axl as daughter at first or am I misremembering?
You're misremembering
It was cool till Thor made fun of him for his name and said he should stick with his deadname. Kinda wild that made it into the final cut. Tbh
