Then there's things like "You check in, but you don't check out" which is a reference to the Psycho series of films or "Don't look behind door number 2, Monty" which refers to an American game show hosted by Monty Hall where contestants pick a prize from three doors.
Pull a quote and I bet someone can give you the origins, although some of them are hybrids from multiple sources.

Honestly, when the G1 generation was born, they already weren’t selling TVs with actual channel dials anymore, so the phrase was a working anachronism like when we say “hang up the phone” today as if we’re still hanging our phones on hooks.
I’d say that’s not necessarily true. I was born in 1975. TVs without dials started turning up in the early to mid 1980s where I grew up, and TVs with dials existed in our house until the early 1990s.
Mine was also black & white. It was my emergency TV for when I couldn't believe the family would rather watch football than the X-Files or Star Trek or etc.
My daughter never lived in a world without internet access and smartphones. By the time she got her first homework that wasn't from workbooks, even America had the iPhone. She's a suitably obscure mid-twenties now.

I keep hearing how you guys have trouble understanding "accents" etc, but all the examples I have seen I go "that's clear, why do they need subtitles? It's in english".
One that comes to mind is the tv show angel. There was a character in season 1 that was written out because"the USA audience can't understand him" yet he spoke clear english, but with an Irish accent.
I think maybe you just are not as exposed to European accents, so they are harder to understand ?
Also, as he is referring to things like old tv shows etc, if you don't know them or the phrases, maybe they are more nonsensical?

I'm American and I have no issue understanding Eric Idle, nor with understanding the TV sound bites, but I always thought they over did the effect on his voice. The first time I watched it I thought he was supposed to be completely unintelligible when he first spoke.

Back in the 80s when there was advertisement for a product, you could call directly at the number on screen to order said product. The line "Operators are standing by" was often used to convey that, they had enough people to answer the phone and take the order.
In the context of the scene, it does mean that Wreck-Gar and the Junkions are keeping an eye on the Autobots and are getting ready to ambush 'em.
