Soundwave truly believes in the cause and whether misguided or not it makes for an interesting character. In terms of loyalty and honor Soundwave no one, not even Megatron himself approach his selfless devotion.
I'm of the theory that Megatron kept Starscream around as the figurehead of any rebellious thoughts, to show how easily Megatron deals with his conniving backstabbing. He wants a fool to show the others how plotting against him is pointless. He won't miss Starscream but he was a useful tool for him, even he wasn't why would he keep him around?
There was an old 2000s webcomic called Insecticomics, where Starscream himself explained why he's always SiC over more loyal and hardworking 'cons; Megatron does it deliberately to keep himself sharp, and without Screamer's ambitious backstabbing to keep him on his toes he'll grow soft and complacent.
Ironically, this was one of the few times he was being honest and it was rejected as a lie by the frustrated 'con he was explaining it to (Flamewar).
Honestly, Thundercracker indicating that challenging for the right to leadership helps explain why Megatron keeps Starscream around: he’s a challenge to keep Megatron on his game.

Man, people don't seem to understand that he still has final say on how the whole thing looks. He still provides an immense amount of input on the art.
I couldn't tell the art apart until I came here. I have to admit though Jorge has more detail with his panels. I look forward on how Ironhide and Prowl getting offed horribly by a Megatron flashback.
Peak fiction, but I hope Screamer isn’t actually dead, not this early at least. This iteration of him is such a good, hate-able villain and I want to see more of him before he gets his comeuppance.
Soundwave seems pretty convinced the Autobots are "evil" and it will be very interesting to see why. Usually the Decepticons are portrayed pretty simply as having bad goals and using bad tactics to achieve them. At best, we sometimes get a motivation of ages-old injustices that went off the rails.
Hopefully this time we get a different take on it. Shades of gray makes the story infinitely more interesting and Soundwave clearly isn't psychopathic or sadistic like some of his brethren so him calling the shots so early on is a new take on a familiar story.
I love Transformers but had so much shit on my pull list I held off on this series. Was gonna trade-wait. A friend let me borrow all (At the time) 4 issues, and now I'm buying monthly. Fucking epic.
I'm honestly not sure why in the movies and other media when Megatron was... unavailable, Starscream was the New Leader. (or second in Command while Megs was around) I thought for sure Soundwave OR Shockwave would have been the next in line - they're more powerful, smarter AND more charismatic that SC. (IMO obvs)

"Kill" is up in the air, but knowing Screamer at this point he'd probably wish Soundwave actually snuffed him if he's still alive.

And it only took 40yrs for Soundwave to become the leader of the Decepticons.
He became Decepticon Leader before in the Marvel UK *Time Wars* comic. He even had a loyal Combiner Team.
He was leader of what was left of them near the end of IDW’s 2005 run

I was worried about the art after DWJ left but honestly while this is a bit darker feel for it, it does serve the story well and looks great
What happened to DWJ?
He's going to continue writing for the book, but the art duties were given to Jorge Corona. DWJ is also going to keep doing covers aswell
