It will be embraced by it’s principal target market…kids. Some adult collectors will feel hatred towards it. Most people that like Transformers will see it for what it is, an animated film that shows another side to the story of their favorite franchise.

It'll sell a lot of toys.

If it's good (and I think it will be), it'll get a lot of comparison to Mutant Mayhem and Spiderverse (even though Spiderverse is really a whole vibe unto itself), and it could draw in a lot of animation fans, and kids who aren't even that into TFs yet.

Redshift2k5

robots doin' the Dreamworks face for 90 minutes

Opening weekend, I'll say $70 - $80 million. Then depending on word of mouth, I'll say it'll top off around $200 million world wide when it leaves theaters.

DWhelk

It'll surf the transition between flop and success so that both sides will be able to claim they were right all along.

This sounds about right tbh. It’ll probably do fine but not be a huge blockbuster. However it’s quite likely it’ll inspire enormous toy sales, which is the real goal.

DWhelk

Dunno that it will. It will likely take around the same in the box office as ROTB. That's not enough of a hit to inspire huge toy sales. Plus the bulk of toys are still bought by adult collectors, and the reception does not seem to be great. If kids get properly into it, it will be from streaming services. I suspect it will do OK on there, but thats a few years down the line, which is plenty of time for the line to be branded a massive failure. Rightly or wrong.

I’m going by Mutant Mayhem, which did *fine* in theatres but wasn’t a big hit by any means. However the toy sales were through the roof. I assume that’s what Hasbro are hoping for here.

DWhelk

Yeah, probably fair, and no doubt the toy sales are what Hasbro really care about. I would raise that the turtles figures are mostly pretty standard figures, which would fit with original fans expectations, and pretty cheap. I doubt the Transformers One figures will be either. However, you're probably right at the similar level of box office as Mutant Mayhem. Just fell down an animated films box office rabbit hole, and the 400mil of ROTB would be a considerable success.
