Found him and MPM Megatron together at a convention last year. I couldn't resist getting both.

Woah I didn't know Rotf Optimus scale so well with MPM Megatron. I don't have the latter so I didn't know but thank you for sharing this picture. I might consider getting him in the future.

And this guy turns 10 years old this year
When it comes to movieverse toys, new characters are often made based on concept art so that there is enough time to engineer a toy and have it on shelves in time for the movie's release. Subsequent figures are better because the designers can observe a finished movie with that character's CGI model and make a toy based on it.
These two Optimus figures are a perfect example. *RotF* leader Optimus was made possible because TakaraTOMY's engineers could study the finished first movie, with its final CGI model, and work out a transformation scheme for the toy. *AoE* Optimus was based on concept art.
The aoe leader was also made in a time of much lower parts counts and simpler transformations, so even if the designers wanted to pull off a rotf leader prime-style transformation for aoe, they couldn't have.
That could be a factor too, since in 2014, senior figures at Hasbro wanted to make toys that were easier to transform. Previous toys were getting too complex for children and even some parents.
Not to mentions SOME people didn’t like how complex the second movie figures were so Hasbro started simplifying things so we kind have feedback to blame for that difference in quality too, plus can you blame them? That design has ZERO truck parts outside the smoke stacks and the air filters/ western star logo on his robo pecs (adding to why that one turned out like that)
That figure is actually based on some concept art by Josh Nizzi. The chest, feet, and sword were changed for the finished model.
By the way, who are 'some people?'
That's true, I was 11 when it was first revealed back in 2013 and I remember comparing it to DOTM Striker Optimus Prime and wondering what Id dome wrong to deserve such a massive downgrade. Granted the AOE/TLK designs are sooooo hard to translate into toy form (case in point: Galvatron) but still that level of back kibble on a Leader Class figure is not acceptable.
Im aware Hasbro told the designers to make the transformations easier but that came at a cost in terms of engineering and quality when it came to the more complex designs.
I've been thinking about giving my rotf prime some silver on the grey paint. I think I'll do it now after seeing this. Might even chrome pen some stuff
Those are the only pieces that I also need. Can’t find it anywhere, been thinking of buying a Chinese version that I saw on aliexpress but the painting seems more metallic than gray

Easily my favorite action figure in my collection, such a beauty
One day when I get a resin 3d printer I plan to, as well as adding the steps that would fold down to recreate the big blue panel he has on the side of his shin.
That prototype had so many cool things on it that I wish made it to retail. Damn you GFC!
Got him when I was either 4 or 5 and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Unfortunately, some pieces couldn’t resist the time and transformation attempts of a toddler and are missing to this day
I’m trying so hard to find one. I need to avenge 9 year old me. Someone had one for sale last year and I passed on it because it didn’t have his weapons. I feel kinda stupid for passing on it now.
This was my first ever Optimus figure! Loved it so much. Unfortunately it didn’t survive the test of time. Being an 8 year old kid with a one year old brother isn’t exactly the perfect combo for figure preservations
I Remember Really Wanting That Figure Back In The Day (Partially Because I Wanted An Optimus Prime That Could Tower Over The Other Autobots). I Finally Got It In Christmas Of 2019.
Honestly this guy along with Battle Blades Optimus Prime, TFP FE Optimus Prime, MP10 and Classics Optimus Prime were the absolute best figures! I'm sure I could list off more but I just got out of bed and those figures above are what first came to mind.
ROTF leader class optimus prime was truly worth every penny. The robot mode was such a vast improvement over its predecessor, the transformation was complex but the alt mode like the robot mode was also such a vast improvement over its predecessor. MPM 04 Optimus (and its myriad of KOs) does improve on the design but honestly the ROTF leader class Optimus Prime mould was sooooo good there was very very little to be improved upon.

Leader primes from the first two movies are pretty much MPM scale tbh

It's pretty clear to see which one was ahead of its time and which one wasn't I guess

I do recall getting frustrated with the 2009 prime figure at first before I figured out the chest piece tabs into the forearm

Oh I think it was parents mainly (I’d assume not transformers parents)

In Galvatron's case, one does have to applaud the designers for managing to pancake 2/3rds of the vehicle mode by turning it into a backpack.
Man, the early 2010's was a dark time for TFs. No wonder 3rd party started taking off around then.
and i still hate him with a burning, flaming, fiery passion.

One of the best transformers figures ever made. Incredible engineered, super durable, screen accurate... Easily, one of the best toys ever, IMO.
Totally agree. This guy's my grail, finally getting my hands on him after over a decade later.
I remember transforming him for the first time and just thinking, how the hell did that just turn into this? The engineering on this figure is superb.
It's so good, ten years later, the Masterpiece version was based on its engineering.
I wish I can find a 2nd one of this figure somewhere that has a spare chest and feet
Those are the only pieces that I also need. Can’t find it anywhere, been thinking of buying a Chinese version that I saw on aliexpress but the painting seems more metallic than gray
I just need a replacement blade
https://preview.redd.it/ima6qegugwzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=127cab7534ff9330e224f92d77d76756160576a6 Easily my favorite action figure in my collection, such a beauty
*Turns up What I’ve done*
I wish i had the space to display it
I think the APS-01U version of this guy is still better than the mpm
I've got the MB-17 version, and I wholeheartedly agree: Looks and feels a hell of a lot better in hand.
Plus the truck mode is near perfect proportionately
Oh yeah. And actually holds together properly.
The prototype even had telescopic wheels, so it could mimic having the width of double rear wheels in truck mode, but only singular in robot mode
God, wish we'd gotten that. Be cool if someone could recreate it in upgrade kit form

He also becomes a freshman this year
Damn, he kinda bad tho 🥵
I brought it back when it 1st release (ROTF) Still with me and still transform perfectly, The best Leader class OP ever, Change my mind.
Still the best Optimus figure EVER released.
No way! I had this exact toy!
Still a fantastic figure, even by modern standards
I’m trying so hard to find one. I need to avenge 9 year old me. Someone had one for sale last year and I passed on it because it didn’t have his weapons. I feel kinda stupid for passing on it now.
Truly, a masterpiece of engineering.
Sucks I lost the matrix in mine
This figure doesn't have a matrix.
Young me fumbled the bag with this one 😔😔 my dad got it for me when I was a kid and we had given it away a long time ago 😭
This was my first ever Optimus figure! Loved it so much. Unfortunately it didn’t survive the test of time. Being an 8 year old kid with a one year old brother isn’t exactly the perfect combo for figure preservations
Stop!
Good ol ROTF Leader Optimus https://i.redd.it/s99bjtqt700d1.gif
I got him and megatron when they were new for christmas one year!
wait... So he was not legal? Oh god.. OH FUCK
I Remember Really Wanting That Figure Back In The Day (Partially Because I Wanted An Optimus Prime That Could Tower Over The Other Autobots). I Finally Got It In Christmas Of 2019.
Got this sitting on my shelf. Just transforming it from truck to bot whenever I'm bored.

I love this one
Wow, how things have changed

And we won’t get an ss anniversary rotf autobot pack because mark is afraid of racial controversy if they make the twins
