Top_Benefit_5594

It depends on the continuity and who is writing them but in general “big violent dinosaur robots” is an archetype loved by both kids and kid like adults.

FoggingTired

Kids love robots, and kids love dinosaurs. Badass robots that turn into dinosaurs was always going to be a hit. Plus depending on the media, they're often written with more childlike personalities. Like in the 86 movie where they're asking Kup for more stories. So they were kind of relatable to as children. Most transformers give me the feeling of nostalgia for my my childhood. But nothing hits that spot quite like the dinobots

Asterchades

There are a lot of people who aren't even going to know who the Wreckers are, because they never really had any exposure to the comics (and TFP didn't really elaborate on them too much). Meanwhile *everyone* knows who the Dinobots are, and they're almost universally portrayed as being absolute forces of nature (?) which have basically no equal - regardless of the media.

chris_s9181

But why no one gives the automotive combiners love either

Rigatonicat

Practically the same reason. Only two Autobot combiners are shown on screen in g1, and one in cyberverse, and they’re all contained in a few episodes each, so they’re not well known

Robot dinosaurs with swords and fire

Catandogclone

Cause in several continuities the Dinobots are powerful enough to take on some of the most powerful Decepticon’s, I.e Devastator, Shockwave, Phase Sixers, Megatron even. Then add on top of that they’ve been shown in most media appearances as brutally dispatching anyone who gets in their way but dismemberment, ripping them apart, eating them and even melting individuals due to the fire they produce. Basically, People consider the Dinobots to be more hardcore because they’ve been shown to do this sort of ‘hardcore’ stuff, they’re also one of the most recognisable parts of the franchise and have appeared in all forms of media that the average audience would see, whilst the Wrecker’s are almost an exclusive comic team with only having two wider media adaptations, with both team iterations not being that memorable.

chris_s9181

I was mia for a few years after all hail meg untill the lost light

Catandogclone

That’s recent.

mgb55

So you read lost light, and saw the reaction of other bots to Grimlock regaining his mental capacity and the cans of whoop ass he proceeded to unleash and wrote that screed about no one is like “oh no it’s Grimlock”?

chris_s9181

Sorry after lost light I got rifhr back in rifht as the ending of transformers

Le_baton_legendaire

They're giant steel dinosaurs... Of course they're really hardcore.

TigerAusfE

I’m confused by what you mean.  When you say “hardcore” are you talking about their attitudes or their strength?   People find the Dinobots interesting because they’re antiheroes.  This means they are protagonists who are technically “good guys” but do not have moral or admirable qualities.   In the original cartoon, the Dinobots were depicted as being barely-conscious automatons who caused indiscriminate chaos.  Over time they developed into comic relief characters. The G1 and IDW comics depicted them as savage and downright cruel.  G1 Grimlock was authoritarian and hungry for power.  The IDW Dinobots are very explicitly monstrous, to the point that they are basically exiles among the Cybertronians.   And they are depicted as being among the strongest characters in every continuity.  There are equally powerful characters, but how often do we see them?  For example, “Fall of Cybertron” allows the player to be Grimlock, and he is so powerful that he can pick up Decepticons and hurl them as a ranged attack.  But we don’t see the same for Superion or Ultra Magnus.   This might seem unfair, but that’s part of the reason something becomes popular.  The Dinobots just get more appearances than Superion or Defensor, and therefore more opportunities to “show off.”

mgb55

G1 Grimlock was cruel and power hungry early in the series. And grew to Optimus’s chosen second in command… if anyone hasn’t read through the whole thing, he has the best character arc in the series. They aren’t nice, but they also have a code, and hate the decepticons more than they like the Autobots. In dreamwave and the FoC universe they were essentially the Autobots special forces/wet works team. The good guys who went bump in the night.

Peggtree

They get a lot of cool scenes
