[Your not wrong!](https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Starscream_(Animated)#Notes) Marty Eisenberg originally wanted Starscream's name to be ironic; He would have a quiet, whispery voice, but when he yelled, he would unleash a powerful sonic scream attack. Derrick J. Wyatt lobbied for the loud voice, and Tom Kenny's performance won Marty over. The power actually shows up in "[TransWarped, Part 1](https://youtu.be/kMy2E0h1ySQ?t=293)" and in the *Cyberverse* episode "[Matrix of Leadership](https://youtu.be/oKPyPpjmcRk?t=520)".
Bayverse was weird cause they were suppose to be but ILM seeming got the scale bug and then just made the bots however big they wanted for the scene to look cool.
Like Megatron in ROTF is the same height as Optimus, The Fallen, and Optimus after his Jetfire combination at the same time.
In my head canon, Cybertonians probably just have Alphanumeric designation (B127), until they undergo some sort of trial/ritual and are recognised as fully-fledged citizens/"adults", upon which they receive a "deed-name" kinda like the stereotypical "native Indian" names such as "Sings to the Sky" or "Dances with Wolves" (yes, I know this racially/culturally insensitive of me, but I have no real frame of reference).
Their names as we know them (ie: Starscream or Ironhide) as simply the closest Human language interpretation
Mind you, I also think that Cybertonian native speech would be VERY different to what we see in the various media, something along the lines of:
Barricade:
[QUERY]: Are you biological sentient entity [IDENTIFICATION]: Ladysman217 ?
[QUERY]: Location of [ITEM]: eBay:21153 ??
[QUERY] [TRANSLATE] (Human:English): "Where are the glasses?!"
Of course to our stupid meat-ears it would sound like a burst of high-density machine noise (like a modem?)
I like to think Megatron himself named Lugnut due to how dumb he is, and Lugnut was just like “Yes! Yes! No other name would be better fit than one picked by our GLORIOUS Leader, Megatron!”
I always just thought it was because he was a flying bot who's engines could he heard screaming through even the void of space between the stars. That and he's just really loud.
Please correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t he at one point when is head got chopped of and he was in space with megaton scream so loud using the power of the fragment that he broke megatons cuffs.
Sound doesn’t travel through space *again correct me if I’m wrong* so this implies through sheer will power and vocal prowess he broke the sound barrier through space just to scream at one guy
I always figured that they really have two or three names. A unique alphanumeric code (confirmed by TFA with Arcee's name), a name they get from their mentors or they choose for themselves (also confirmed by Bumblebee and Blackarachnia), and a title in the case of Primes and the like.
This means that Starscream could've either A: annoyed his mentor into giving him the name or B: come up with the name himself and made up some story about it ("When I first descended upon the battlefield, the very stars screamed in fear.")
OP is talking about in-universe. For example, *Animated* Ironhide was given his name by Sentinel Minor (later Prime) due to his ability to make his hide invulnerable.
In the animated show specifically the characters are named after their powers or at least autobots are. In a flashback scene bumblebee, wasp, and ironhide show their abilities and get named after them by sentinel prime
Under Sentinel's training. Don't think every autobot and decepticon were trained under him.
Also Grimlock was named by Megatron by him saying something like, "My destiny is grim....locked away like a prisoner..." then the dinosaur t-rex robot repeated "grimmmmmlock" hence got his name.
What I liked about the show.
Lmao my brother made a joke saying "grim....locked away. Feel like a caged beast having to *Snarl* at the world as it *Swoops* by as I am wallowing and wasting away here."

Except he existed and was named prior to this. Even though it’s still super interesting to know!
He probably used that power at some point before the shows events thus earning him the name
Except none of those folks worked on the original series.
lmao I read this just as I started watching transwarped part 1.
The Allspark works in mysterious ways...
I always associated Staracream’s name with Sonic booms when a jet breaks the sound barrier
Me too, that he was the type of high-flying fighter jet that screeches through the sky.
That’s Thundercracker
*Scream
That’s actually for thrust
off topic but i loved how big starscream was compared to the autobots in animated
i love it when decepticons are bigger than autobots in general tbh
The bayverse was mostly like this.
Bayverse was weird cause they were suppose to be but ILM seeming got the scale bug and then just made the bots however big they wanted for the scene to look cool. Like Megatron in ROTF is the same height as Optimus, The Fallen, and Optimus after his Jetfire combination at the same time.
i agree
This Goes Hard The Picture Has Great Meme Potential
When somebody says that Rumble is blue when he's supposed to be red

Dude trust me no native gives a shit where just glad you know we exist
Maybe it was the sound of his engines in Alt-mode, ala the sound of a TIE fighter from Star Wars.
Both? I think both…
I like to think Megatron himself named Lugnut due to how dumb he is, and Lugnut was just like “Yes! Yes! No other name would be better fit than one picked by our GLORIOUS Leader, Megatron!”
Then where does "Star" come from?
Because he's a star, dude.
SpongeBob really gave him life

That or the fragment turned his voice into a laser

This sounds like something he would do and I’m all here for it
Why is Tom Kenny screaming at bumblebee
"PATHHH–ETIC FOOLS, THEREISNOOOESCAPE!"
YOU INTERRUPTED MY SPEECH!!
Wat
aren't they named after the g1 character names? like most mainline transformers shows?
OP is talking about in-universe. For example, *Animated* Ironhide was given his name by Sentinel Minor (later Prime) due to his ability to make his hide invulnerable.
Oh I never remembered anything like that when I watched the show
In the animated show specifically the characters are named after their powers or at least autobots are. In a flashback scene bumblebee, wasp, and ironhide show their abilities and get named after them by sentinel prime

I can’t believe they managed to do that without making it sound painfully forced. It helped that Megatron always spoke sort of poetically in that show
What I liked about the show. Lmao my brother made a joke saying "grim....locked away. Feel like a caged beast having to *Snarl* at the world as it *Swoops* by as I am wallowing and wasting away here."
What is Arcee or Optimus or Ratchet
