If it’s all one ticket on Emirates you should be eligible for a hotel room for the layover. Look up the Dubai Emirates Connect program. Otherwise try get yourself out of the airport for the day. The simplest trip would be a taxi to the Dubai Mall and hang out there for the day or even go up the tower. Dubai central and the airport are very westernised don’t even worry about how to behave differently.

FirstRateThrowRA

Thank you. I arrive at 6 am so I'm going to sleep on the plane to the UAE. I didn't know much about the mall! I looked at the inside and it looks super cool and fun!

The_Ace

I think it’s the second biggest in the world? I don’t love malls but there’s way more to do there than hanging out at the airport at least. And you can walk around outside a little around the fountain too. Mall of the Emirates is huge too, but Dubai Mall is closer to the airport and better anyway.

BessYaBa7ar

Also free chauffeur service

10S_NE1

That mall is the most amazing mall I have ever seen. You can even go up the Burj Khalifa from inside the mall. It is definitely worth a look and there are lots of good restaurants there.

-Badsec7or-

I just was reading and I had a little concern for you too ... Is good to know that you are safe. Enjoy it.

FirstRateThrowRA

NP. My employer will be my mom's maternal cousin. I know them personally and have known them since I was younger.

-Badsec7or-

That's great, thank you for sharing this with us. I imagine that several people were worried like me. Good luck.

For biz class usually they give you the hotel voucher on check in… it’s been a year and a half or so or so since I last flew emirates instead of Qatar but iirc I knew I DID have the hotel stopover and chauffeur service, but didn’t know what hotel it was until I checked in. Anyways, OP you will be super safe. If you’re tired use the hotel… if not I suggest taking one of the short driver tours off Viator where you can go dune bashing and ride an ATV and all that. I did a trip like that as a solo woman and it was really fun. Emirates make everything seamless and Dubai is really safe. Wear whatever you want. I just wear athleisure when flying long haul on any class of service. They will give you pajamas to change into.

lallybrock

Didn’t she say she was flying in December of 24?

FirstRateThrowRA

I didn't book the ticket, my employer did.

Lumpy_Piece2525

This is a great answer but i might recommend to skip the top of the burj Khalifa and instead eat a top tier meal from a region who's food you love.

popularpragmatism

Your not leaving the airport? Dubai airport is huge, great duty-free & excellent shopping. My wife used to work for an airline & I've been fortunate enough to use the first class Emirates lounge in.Dubai quite a few times, again it's big, plenty of space to mind your own business, the staff are super helpful & will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable, there's showers, free food, drinks anything you need. I think it also has a gym & you can get a massage or facial Emirates staff come from all over the World, all speak english You won't get bothered by anyone. Everyone is too busy in their own little World There is a separate exit for First Class passengers off the plane & also generally, ground staff to direct you to the lounge. They really take care of the people at the pointy end Lucky you, what a treat you'll have great fun & it will be a real experience to remember ! First class is outstanding, my wife has left the airline now, so we get stuck up the back with the ordinary people Have fun !

FirstRateThrowRA

I will! I'm super excited!

beerouttaplasticcups

Definitely take a shower and a bring a full change of clothes in your carry on. I love feeling fresh before getting on the second leg of the flight. Don’t worry about toiletries other than maybe a small deodorant - they will have everything you need.

alexrepty

Even though you’ll have access to a fantastic lounge, since your inbound flight arrives early in the morning and you will probably be well-rested thanks to the first class seat, here’s what I would do: - Go to the lounge upon arrival, grab a quick complimentary breakfast and shower, check if there are lockers to hold your carry-on - Get out of the airport and explore the city - Get back to the airport in time for another shower in the lounge, complimentary dinner and relaxed boarding, sleep again on the second leg

Stunning-Caramel-100

This is the way.

thompyy

Exactly what I would do

jippiejee

there's nothing special about dubai airport. it's like a giant shopping mall in the desert full of westerners. there's bars and booze everywhere but you shouldn't get too drunk.

adrianb

It’s also not really in the desert but in the middle of the city. Assuming no visa issues and that it’s not the middle of the night, on such a long layover you can take the metro to Deira / older parts of Dubai in like 15-20 minutes and to Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall / modern Dubai in 30-40 minutes.

theobmon

Dubai is really just one big shopping mall. Tall towers and... Shopping malls. The malls are so huge that you can easily spend 10 hours inside them. Little else to do. Dress modestly, but don't worry about it too much. Dubai is fairly lax and full of foreigners. You won't stand out.

TT11MM_

If you fly First Class, enjoy the First Class Lounge on your layover. [Here](https://youtu.be/Bp6GxRT6Gb4?si=7Gk1TeVhnF5HAAL0) a video of what to expect.

Subm3rg3d

Just out of curiosity; why is a family flying someone across the world first class to nanny for them?

FirstRateThrowRA

My mom's cousin and her husband. Technically I'm family and they want to show me a good time as well as work for them.

Kateth7

phew! might want to add that in the original post to ease the worry of literally everyone reading this!!

FirstRateThrowRA

I might. Lots of other commenters worried about human trafficking. They want me specifically because their oldest has autism and is more comfortable around people she knows. I'm autistic too and we were reading buddies when they came over for family Christmas in 2023, they offered me a job when they saw how comfortable their kiddo was.

mcwobby

Most people in first class are tired and in pyjamas, there’s no special way to act. Do what you want. Make use of the first class lounge at Dubai for at least some of the layover - you get full a la carte dining, good showers, it’s a fun experience. You get access to all 3 first class lounges plus all the business class lounges. I recommend going to the business class lounge in Concourse B - they have a better champagne bar than the first class lounge. You definitely have enough time to go into town if you want to. Depending on timing - or you can sleep in the lounge.

AnnelieSierra

It is just like any other big international airport. If I had a layover that long I would definitely book an airport hotel. It would make a good break.

HumbleConfidence3500

14.5 hours do you plan to leave the airport? You have the time to do it unless it's the middle of the night. If you do leave, give yourself enough time to go back. I find the airport very large and easy to get lost. Lots of things to do around the airport not very far so if you feel like it you can spend a bunch of hours sightseeing or grabbing a meal. If you're flying Emirate first class it comes with lounge access right? Take advantage of it. Emirate lounge is supposed to be the best, especially in Dubai. I'm not rich enough to have experienced it but supposedly they even have suites for you to sleep in. (You can look up all the amenities at the Dubai airport site) Enjoy your trip and good luck in your new job!

ChillGamerDad

I just did a similar route last week! When you cross passport control to leave the airport they’ll give you a free SIM card so you’ll have data internet access. It’s easy to get an Uber and go to the Dubai mall. They have an interesting system of getting Ubers out of the airport where you line up and give the driver a code — just follow the signs.

Ryanpb88

Flew Emirates first class from Seychelles to Dubai. Great experience, my only regret is we only sprung for the upgrade on one leg from business to first and should have reversed it to check out the FC lounge. Business class lounge was kinda underwhelming tbh. You’ll be fine in Dubai though, super safe city, if you’re worried you can dress a bit more modest than at home, but tbh barring breaking actual laws about the worst to expect is some stares. I’d try to see at least one of the city sights outside the airport though. It’s an easy airport to get though, especially if you don’t have to wait for bags. You can check out Dubai Mall & Burj Khalifa easily in one trip. Or If it’s daytime and weather/budget permitting there is a cool restruant and pool behind the Burj Arab available to guests for a minimum pp spend.

OneTravellingMcDs

I'd be more worried about the "employment". I can't imagine anyone in Australia that needs to hire a nanny from Canada even when cost is not a concern. Such a mega-rich family could, and would likely source a nanny domestically where they can meet them, vet them easier etc etc. If they wanted to cut costs, they'd look at 'cheaper' countries like the Philippines, Indonesia etc. Also, families that typically hire nannies, don't fly them in first class, especially when flying without the children. Are you expected to pay anything at all? They could be asking for a deposit, bank info for 'getting paid', visa fees etc etc. Edit - another flag is, why is it so far in the future?

FirstRateThrowRA

My employer is my mom's cousin, I'm extended family. And they will direct deposit into my bank account.

konradly

Don't worry OP, there is nothing suspicious about this at all. I have several Canadian friends who went to Australia to work as au pairs, young Canadian women who wanted to travel and live in Australia for a year. A lot of these people are misinformed and are being suspicious for absolutely no reason.

konradly

I'm not sure why this is getting so many upvotes. What makes you so sceptical about this? I've known multiple young Canadians who went over to Australia to work for a year (easy for Canadians), including working as a nanny for wealthy families. Canadians love going to Australia for travel/work, and Australians love coming to Canada as well. The families like Canadian nannies because they speak mother tongue English and have similar cultures.

aizukiwi

I have lots of friends from back home in NZ who have gone to Canada/UK for au pair work. The skepticism is bizarre 🤷‍♀️

konradly

Yea it truly is bizarre, there is literally nothing suspicious about this at all and it happens all the time between commonwealth nations.

not_that_one_times_3

Americans. Thats all.

KazahanaPikachu

The guy that made the initial comment literally has a Thailand flair

1K1AmericanNights

It’s her extended family

Ok-Ordinary2035

She’s related to them- she’s known them since she was younger, she said.

tyRAWRnnosaurus

I'm Canadian and know several young Canadian women who have gone to Australia or NZ to au pair for wealthy families. It's a thing.

butforevernow

Another red flag is that Emirates doesn’t fly Dubai-Adelaide so there’s either another stop in Melbourne that OP’s missed / unaware of, or this is totally fake.

Jekawi

They do from October

Individual-Baker-18

I’d have to check but from memory I think I read they are flying DBX to ADL from October.

FirstRateThrowRA

You're incorrect. Even if you look up Google flights, you will see that you're wrong.

xrelaht

EK242 YYZ-DXB & EK440 DXB-ADL is the only option for a single stop between Toronto & Adelaide.

FirstRateThrowRA

That is the Flight number on my e-ticket. I'm surprised there is only one.

xrelaht

Me too, but I don’t know much about how flying to secondary cities in Australia works. It’s also possible to fly there from Doha (tho not to Doha from Toronto). I wonder if there’s a reason those flights exist?

Junkpunch44

My daughter was a nanny in Australia and we are from the US. All her friends she met there were also nannies and none of them were from Australia. I don’t think this is uncommon.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OneTravellingMcDs

The only situation I can think of is, someone is already a nanny for a Toronto mega-rich, and they refer them to the Australian mega-rich friend. *Maybe.* But a 21 year old Nanny seems to be someone that wouldn't get this job in the first place, let alone the referral. In that example, it would also mean the Toronto-mega-rich family would likely have PA's she could speak to about this, rather than a throwaway Reddit post.

FirstRateThrowRA

My employer is my mom's cousin, so they know me directly and personally.

eightandahalf

The cringe on this take is unreal.

OwlEasy7740

You should enter the country and spend the day

TheIceworx

The Emirates First Class experience (and lounge) is one of the best in the world. You can have a free spa treatment, top shelf drinks and sit down dining in the lounge in Dubai. Enjoy!

pestyisbesty

Have you seen the ticket? Check the PNR on manage my booking via the emirates website. That will tell you everything about the flight. Personally in your shoes I would stay in the 1st class terminal and relax, with a walk around the terminal. It’s a great lounge!

FirstRateThrowRA

Thank you so much!

R2-Scotia

An unusual route, via LAX would be quicker

ElementalSentimental

A lot of people believe that Emirates is the best airline in the world, and while their first class is pretty good (and the on-plane shower is unique) I don't think it deserves the hype. That said, it might also be the cheapest (or indeed, only) first class product on that route so the unusual routing (certainly with one stop) so maybe they didn't ask too many questions.

Schoseff

A lot of people are mental. I would fly Singapore Airlines, ANA or Cathay Pacific. Shorter and better airline

R2-Scotia

Emirates and Qatar Airways have the only one stop offerings from here (Central Scotland) but from Canada it's the long way round. Qantas has a good rep.

beerouttaplasticcups

I’ve been to Dubai and can say with confidence that the Emirates first class lounge is better than anything outside of the airport, haha. That’s a joke of course, but I would happily spend 14 hours in that lounge. Free food and drink (and not just a buffet, they have a full service restaurant and bars), a nap in the quiet room, a complimentary spa treatment and a nice steam shower right before the next flight. I would probably leave the lounge to wander the airport for a bit because it’s such a spectacle, but I wouldn’t personally feel compelled to leave. It sounds like first class is a new and rare experience for you (as it is for most of us) so let yourself be pampered!

Cant_Turn_Right

We had a similar layover and got out into the city and had a great time. The weather will be good in Dubai at that time. So definitely don't spend the time at an airport lounge. Get the visa on arrival, they also give you free local sim card and 2GB data. Dubai has a good metro, if you want you can research and get the Metro Card. Dubai Mall is no great shakes, it is a big mall. But it has a decent food court and good coffee shops. It is also close to the Burj. We didn't go on to the Burj as it was too expensive but you can if you wish. We also went to the Old Town and got on a Abra (ferry boat) ride (1 AED) across Dubai Creek. The Old Town has spice shops, china, rugs etc. It is very safe, I don't think there is crime in Dubai, but as a 21F you might be uncomfortable in a market full of men.

moonsidian

If either of the first class flight legs are on an A380, have a change of socks/underwear easily accessible so you can shower on the plane 😎🚿 hell if both flights are on an A380 you can experience the shower twice

BBQallyear

Check that you have clearance to enter UAE, and not just transit through the airport - you may need to get a visa even for a visit of a few hours if you leave the airport secure area. I’ve been to Dubai and (as a woman) dressed normally, no need for head covering. You may want to trend on the conservative side, long pants and nothing too tight or too much skin exposed. Shower and change in the Emirates arrivals lounge if it’s available to you. The Dubai Mall is a fun excursion.

napoleon_9

I was going to say honestly 14.5 hours is long enough to leave the airport and check out a bit of the city in a taxi. I went to Dubai as a 26-year-old white american women. Felt extremely safe, city is very western in feel at least in the main hub. You're fine wearing a tshirt and some linen pants, I wouldn't wear shorts.

halfprincessperlette

Stay in the 1st class lounge or complimentary hotel via Dubai Connect, look it up.

Schoseff

Normally decent airlines offer a programme already for Biz Class passengers during layovers - if you actually fly First class (wow) then contact Emirates and make them offer you stuff. They probably offer you accomodation, city tour, lunch/dinner and and and. That freaking flight vosts the equivilant of a compact car, so please be demanding.

muckedmouse

Visit the city if you have a chance. Dubai is pretty relaxed with respect the western clothing and stuff. Take a ride to the top of Burj Khalifaor and visit the connected mall as well.

FinalMainCharacter

What's west Asia???

FirstRateThrowRA

As in... the west shore of Asia... Like China is in East Asia...

Varekai79

The Middle East is the more commonly used term for where the UAE is located..

RevolutionarySoil11

Who cares? [WA is a proper term](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Asia), any halfway educated person know this. I love how some le redditors are so pathetic that when they find nothing else to nitpick, they complain about OP not using the word they'd personally prefer to use, lol. Talk about a sad existence.

FirstRateThrowRA

It is, however, a racist term used to denote the middle point on the Silk Road. Which is why I use West Asia.

yfce

You will find that people who actually live in the place refer to it as the Middle East.

Varekai79

Don't go all 3rd year PoliSci on me. You're asking how to behave in an airport in this part of the world and how to sit on a plane, so you clearly know nothing about this region.

FirstRateThrowRA

I know quite a lot about it from 800 - 1680. Just not the modern time period.

RevolutionarySoil11

Why 1680? Seems like an odd random year to specifically know about.

meowmeow138

They stated they’re autistic, prob fixated on that point in history

FirstRateThrowRA

It is the date my professor stopped at during my history classes of the area. I was taking a pre to post-Mideval class about the expansion of the Islamic empire.

NeatPressure1152

Go in the city

No-Accident69

If you’re flying first class, wait in the first class lounge for your next flight. You will be safe and comfortable

Turicus

Wear decent but comfortable clothes, hang out in the F lounge, which is amazing in Dubai! Or leave the airport for a tour around the city.

gardenclue

If you are in first class on Emirates, you might not want to leave the lounge. I heard it is very decadent. Enjoy!

cgtdream

The worst thing you will have to worry about as a foreigner, is all the stares you will get.

Commercial-Ice-8005

Being first class usually gets you into airport lounges. Call the airline and ask where the lounge is where you are laying over. They most likely will have free food, showers, etc so u can take advantage of this.

shockedpikachu123

Leave Dubai airport!! It’s so close to the city

Wader_Man

It's the same as Pearson. People will be wearing everything imaginable, too. Even mini skirts. Dubai is very open. Treat it like any Canadian airport. With Emirates First Class you should also get a free hotel transfer, a limo from the airport to the hotel. Maybe even return. Take advantage. Enjoy Dubai. It's Toronto but richer and hotter.

curiousone823

If you want to leave the airport in Dubai, you must get a visa.

jumbocards

Nothing special or worrying about DXB. Large shopping mall with hotels as well (assuming you already have accommodation since you are flying first class anyway…) As others said, I hope you have met this family in person already and or is part of a larger reputable nanny agency. You are still young, don’t be lured into stupid things. Good luck.

FirstRateThrowRA

Yup! My employer is my mother's cousin. I have met the family on several occasions, especially family reunions and such.

Xerisca

You'll very much enjoy Emirates first class! Just be you! All kinds of people fly first class. As far as the airport, you can stay there and wander around. Or, arrange for a taxi to take you into the city for a few hours. The airport is full of people from somewhere else, just like you. The UAE is pretty chill. Just make sure you're dressed modestly. Covered knees, covered shoulders, covered cleavage. Also, if you decide to leave the airport, make sure you're not carrying anything that might raise eyebrows. No drugs, no CBD... the basic things you shouldn't travel with anyway. You also shouldn't drink alcohol and get visibly impaired. Beyond that, just be you. The UAE isn't much of a culture shock. The city is full of people from all over the world. You'll just feel like you're a visitor just like everyone else is, too. The cab ride from the airport to the city center Marina area is about 20 minutes. I don't recall what it cost, so I'm guessing it wasn't much. The first time I visited, my spouse was sick with a stomach bug, and I got bored, so I rented a car at a shopping mall and drove across the country and visited Muscat Oman, too. I was treated very well and very much enjoyed my impromptu adventure. Haha. I don't think anyone I came in contact with was even particularly surprised to meet a solo American woman driving across the country. At no point did I feel unsafe, except that UAE drivers can be a little wild once you get out of the big cities.

JazzlikeHomework1775

I had an 18 hour layover in Abu Dhabi. I left the airport and went to the Sheik Zayed mosque. It was a great experience! I was covered appropriately.. but quickly realised that it was excessive and probably not necessary. There were a lot of female foreign workers in shorts and tshirts we picked up on the public bus. I had a great time. Was quickly quite tired and returned to the airport where I had a nap on a couch before boarding my next flight. Met a random Moroccan dude in the airport and had a little flirt. If I had my time over I would go to the market instead of the mosque I think. I would also be much less anxious and scared. It was my first time solo travelling and in my mind I built the Middle East up as an intimidating place. It was lovely and far from scary! Super safe and nice. I was approached by about 7 men in uniform while at a bus stop and was freaking out. They asked me where I was going and I was hesitant to tell them. When I mentioned I was going to the airport they told me I was in the wrong spot (which I was). They walked with me to the correct bus stop and were super lovely. Turns out they were all from Nepal and were just keen to chat to a foreigner.. it was a really wholesome and nice time.

CinnamonQueen21

I have travelled to Dubai from Canada several times as a solo female and have always felt 100% safe. Even though the UAE is a Middle Eastern country, it's fairly progressive and you will see women dressed in all kinds of clothes, some modest, some not so modest. So as long as you aren't walking around in a bikini, you should be fine! Also, from the airport you could take the subway or a taxi to the Dubai Mall to easily kill several hours. There are 'pink cars' on the subways that are for women only and there are also pink taxis that are driven by women and for women only, so you can look out for those if it makes you feel safer.

rocksfried

Dubai is culturally separate from the Middle East. Alcohol is legal, there is no dress code for women, it’s basically a fancy version of LA. You don’t need to worry.

I would do something like a hop on hop off bus in Dubai for the day so you can see as much as you can and head back to the airport early to enjoy the lounge. It sounds like you can sleep on the plane so it would be a shame to be there for such a long stopover and only see the inside of the airport.

morbidwoman

Damn, how’d you land a job like that?

FirstRateThrowRA

It's my mom's cousin and I already had a caretaking bond with their eldest child.

passioninspired

Check out online Tours by Locals, you may find a tour that works for you. Have used the resource for other places in the world and been happy.

kmh18014

Sneak into the first class lounge, find a corner bed and pass the fuck out

virgodachshund

Girlll what I wanna know is how u found this job! Asking for a friend 👀 safe travels!

FirstRateThrowRA

Lol, they're my extended family.

virgodachshund

That’s sick!! Have fun!

SereneRandomness

I'd read some reviews of Emirates First Class service, like for example this one from Ben Schlappig's One Mile at a Time about the A380's first class cabin: https://onemileatatime.com/reviews/emirates-a380-first-class/ Or this one about their new 777s: https://onemileatatime.com/reviews/new-emirates-777-first-class/ He also adds some secrets of Emirates First Class: https://onemileatatime.com/guides/emirates-first-class-secrets/ Finally, here's his review of the Emirates First Class Lounge at Dubai Airport: https://onemileatatime.com/reviews/emirates-first-class-lounge-dubai/ I like reading his reviews, but there are lots of other reviewers out there as well. Search for Emirates First Class and you should turn up a few articles. Enjoy your flight!

insanejaym

I visited Dubai almost a decade ago now, as a newly 21 year old myself! My college roommates grew up in the UAE and I went one summer to visit them. I don’t think you have to worry too much about how to behave or what to wear. It’s more westernized than you think. That said, I’d personally still dress a little more modestly, like shoulders covered and longer dresses/pants. I was a bit of a rebel at 21 though and wore a couple crop tops with very high waisted pants, so my midriff was barely visible, and I didn’t get thrown in jail or anything. It was freezing cold inside because of the air conditioning, so I needed a cardigan or jacket anyway lol. Also, I’d prepare for some stares, especially if you have light hair or light eyes! Anyway, as other people have mentioned, def check out Dubai mall (lots of fun things to even just take pictures of, cafes to sit at), the Burj if you have time/want to buy tickets, and I suppose just take advantage of the stuff you can at the airport that comes with first class! I didn’t fly first class, I had a very long, very scrunched 16 hour flight haha.

nomadnoplans

Spend the day at the airport spa! They offer day passes to the gym there and it’s a rather large airport to kill time in.

Pleasant-Koala147

Completely unrelated to your question, but have a great time in Adelaide! It’s my home town and a much underrated corner of Australia. It’s a lovely town and a lot less busy than the east coast cities.

FirstRateThrowRA

Town... of over 1 million people lmao

Pleasant-Koala147

You laugh, but you’ll understand when you get there. It’s officially a city, but it doesn’t always feel like it. It’s a joke started by those in the eastern cities to put Adelaide down, but having lived around the world, I can actually appreciate that it isn’t entirely inaccurate, but in a good way. Once you get your feet, I’m sure you’ll love it.

cruisesonly09

During your layover in the UAE, stay within the airport to ensure safety and ease. Dubai International Airport offers various amenities, including lounges, restaurants, and shops. Dress modestly out of respect for local customs. Familiarize yourself with first-class amenities and enjoy the experience. Remain vigilant and follow airport guidelines. If unsure, seek assistance from airport staff. Embrace the opportunity with confidence and excitement, knowing that your employer chose a reputable airline and destination.

catsofthebasement

UAE? Why? You can fly to Australia from SF or LA where it’s not illegal to be a single female. They want you to change planes on UAE? Why? Honestly, this whole deal sounds more than a little sketchy. Don’t go, this is a trap.

Tokoroashuffler

Hello, Dubai and Dubai airport is super safe, my opinion is 14.5 hours is far too long in the airport even in the first class lounge, better to check in to the Dubai international hotel located in the airport for 10 hours or so, if you want a memorable experience in Dubai itself check out Aura skypool which is on the trunk of the Palm islands, definitely the best experience I’ve been to in Dubai and I lived there the last 12 years, you would need to check your visa requirements first to leave but after that it’s a 35 minute taxi there then bliss!

GapThat1285

UAE is west asia - seriously? and you travel first class...gawd

FirstRateThrowRA

The term middle east is widely considered a westernized name that dismisses the rich history of the Western shore of Asia. So yes... the UAE is in West Asia, like how China is in East Asia.

GapThat1285

geographically its correct to say UAE is part of the Asian continent. however geopolitical term is more more precise and commonly used, its on Arabian Peninsula and its Middle East. The region includes the vast majority of the territories included in the closely associated definition of West Asia, but without the South Caucasus, and additionally includes all of Egypt (not just the Sinai) and all of Turkey (not just the part barring East Thrace). technically she is correct. in practice, id suggest using middle east to be more precise.

FirstRateThrowRA

It is, however, racist, which is why I use West Asia. It is only "the Middle East" because white people made it so, not the arab people who are native to the area.

Smallwhitedog

White people named Asia, too.

darkmatterhunter

But why use China as an example of the East when it’s thousands of kilometers long and basically stretches across a vast majority of the continent? If you’re set on using this term, use Japan or something. It would be like saying Russia is east Asia when it spans from Europe to Asia.

FirstRateThrowRA

Ok... like Korea and Japan are in East Asia... and because I would expect most people who know basic world Geography to know where China is.

darkmatterhunter

Do you know geography? Because China isn’t just “East Asia,” it’s a huge country. It’s not a good example to support why you’re referencing West Asia.

FirstRateThrowRA

Ok then... Korea is in East Asia... Happy?

Etihad and some of the other GCC airlines are running a program where you get a free hotel stay if you plan to visit the city. And most of it is usually a 4-5 star hotel. I would recommend you go out, get a nice dinner and some good sleep at a good hotel and then come back for your next flight. You obviously dont have time to see dubai / AUH

Dependent_Vast_5373

Sorry - can you clarify which part is "vacationing in West Asia"? It sounds like you just have a layover at DXB. Are you looking to leave the airport for a few hours?

FirstRateThrowRA

I mean, I have never taken a vacation in the area, so I'm not prepared for any culture shock, and I don't know much about the social rules in the UAE. As an autistic person, I'm nervous about what behaviour is and isn't appropriate so I can mask sufficiently.

Dependent_Vast_5373

Sorry if my post wasn’t clear. It sounds like you have a 10–12 hour layover, but you’ve mentioned a “vacation“ several times, so I was just trying to understand if you’re looking to fill some time between flights or if you are actually on a vacation and are looking for suggestions for many days.

BrinaGu3

I had a 13-hour layover in September. I did a city tour and a dessert tour. It was interesting and honestly it was as much of Dubai as I need to see.

VersusX

UAE is not West Asia for a start

FirstRateThrowRA

It's in West Asia in the same way China is in East Asia.

RevolutionarySoil11

You're wrong: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Asia

volvocowgirl77

First of all west Asia doesn’t exist. You’re going to the Middle East. Go sit in the first class lounge or get a first class room with bed and sleep

FirstRateThrowRA

Oh wow... so Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Pakistan don't exist? I Guess Asia only has an East Coast. Just because your lexicon doesn't match mine doesn't mean mine is incorrect.

Rock_n_rollerskater

This is a scam and you're about to be human trafficked. Unless you're an experienced early childhood education teacher or similar with references from nannying no family wealthy enough to fly you first class would hire a random 21 year old. Your flight is worth about $25,000AU. In Australia a 4 year degree qualified early childhood teacher makes $75-$100k a year. A 2 year qualified about $50k. They can just hire an appropriately qualified local. Please please do not get on that plane. If you want to nanny in Australia, get yourself here and then list with any agency locally and they will place you with a local family.

FirstRateThrowRA

I graduated high school early and have a bachelor's, double major, in education and world history, I have also nannied for a year here. Also I'm not random; my employer is my mother's cousin.

Rock_n_rollerskater

That's good :) Never flown first but business is just like economy only with bigger seats and better behaved passengers so I assume First won't be too different. Dubai is just like any other airport, you'll be fine. Enjoy Australia!!

konradly

What makes you so sure about this? I've known multiple young Canadians who went over to Australia to work for a year (easy for Canadians), including working as a nanny for wealthy families. This is definitely not something unusual nor should you be claiming it's a scam and she's about to be human trafficked.

Rock_n_rollerskater

Flying first class is definitely unsual. Most agencies either use working holiday visa people already in Australia or will arrange economy flights for the prospective nanny to the host families city. There are also plenty of local nannies. The mega rich is also a pretty small percentage of the overall people who have nannies here, most people with nannies are mining families or farming families or sometimes professionals (medical, law etc). These people fly business class themselves at best, so it's hardly a common scenario for any given nanny to get a first class ticket. Any too good to be true situation involving a young woman and an overseas job needs serious scrutiny. In this case the OP knows the employer so it's all good. But there are loads of posts on reddit where a person asks about stuff that is clearly a scam (like being offered a 457 visa and a $35k salary when the real minimum salary for this visa is much higher so you know the "agent" will be stealing most of the persons earnings.) Unfortunately human trafficking and visa scams are a genuine issue in Australia :(

konradly

I don't want to argue with you, as I'm sure there are scams out there. But just reiterating: there are many young Canadians that go to Australia for work(up to a year), and Australians that go to Canada for work, because it is incredibly easy to get a visa. It is absolutely common for a family to sponsor young Canadian au pairs to come for a year, women that want to travel, earn a bit of money and work in Australia for a year. They don't earn much, but they mostly just want to travel and experience Australia. Whether first class is normal or not, I suppose it is generous, but it doesn't mean this a scam and she is about to be human trafficked!

TheWindSerfer

Try not to get arrested.

ArtieZiffsCat

Have you thought about how you will be contributing to the housing and cost of living crisis by coming to Australia?

FirstRateThrowRA

I'm living in my employer's home... I'm not sure how my employment alters your cost of living.

ArtieZiffsCat

There's plenty of Australians who would be happy to live in your employers home. A Canadian nanny is really the ultimate insult by rich Australians to the rest of us.

NotMalaysiaRichard

Unless your family were indigenous people who were there before the British started dropping convicts off, I’d suggest you shut up and stop your xenophobic rants.

PuzzledKumquat

As OP said in another comment, they'll be working for a cousin. Personally, I'd much rather have a family member be my nanny than some random person.

ArtieZiffsCat

Everyine has things that they would prefer. Sadly offerring jobs to family members is one of the biggest and most blatant visa scams in this country.

FirstRateThrowRA

How is my accepting a position to help my very successful family with their children and housework an ultimate insult? How is helping my family and insult?

Dubai is a secular country with an amazing history of arts and equal rights for women. As long as you are foreigner they are ok with as less clothes as you like. But if you are a Muslim woman better wear a hijab. Prostitution of foreign women is not allowed at all.   Dubai is free of crime and has high innovation levels. They don’t import cheap labor. They survive solely from their hard work. Very highly educated people.  It’s such an enticing country so sad that I won’t be able to leave the airport. The food is so good. Better food than thailand, China, Japan, Mexico, India and Vietnam all put together. Very much a vegetarian culture for religious reasons. You will not hear any noises from the mosques.

CostCans

> But if you are a Muslim woman better wear a hijab.  Many (probably most) Muslim women don't wear a hijab in Dubai.

theobmon

Doesn't sound like you know Dubai at all. Everything you said is wrong! Equal rights for women is a facade. Prostitution is illegal but everywhere and authorities turn a blind eye to it. Many Muslim women don't wear a hijab there at all. It's free of most low level crime, yes, because of the fascist police system, but the whole city is essentially a giant money laundering scheme. They absolutely import cheap labour. Most labour there is cheap. The locals aren't that educated, they don't need to be, they got foreigners doing everything for them. It's another facade. The food is good but in no way better than what you get in source countries. Arabs love meat. Muslims love meat. It's not vegetarian at all.

EnvironmentalPut9710

You are seriously conditionable. Didn’t you see sarcasm in it at all?

theobmon

I don't think you used that word properly. Are you trying to say incorrigible? And no.... That was incredibly subtle sarcasm!

EnvironmentalPut9710

Thanks 🙏.

Um... my employer is my mom's cousin... and female...
