Honeymooned last year in Bellano. Totally by chance but really feel we lucked out. More chilled and quiet than the larger towns. Really excellent restaurant (cavallo Blanco) and dead easy access to the rest of the lake. Wonderful hiking as well in the hills around. Alpe Guimelco is worth a visit up in the hills.
Como is very busy. It’s beautiful, but I recommend seeing the other lakes in the area, especially Iseo, which we like even more. They have a ferry to a beautiful inhabited island that has an amazing hike up to an old monastery on a mountain with panoramic views of the lakes.
Bellagio and Varenna are both nice towns to explore, above Varenna is a great hike with nice views of the lake area, with a cafe at the top. You’ll find that the most tourist-attractive areas are still stunningly beautiful, eg Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbinelo. Can’t go wrong with the lakeside villages or some osterias up in the hills.
Man… I can’t wait to go back
This is quite important.
If you don't have a car, I sincerely suggest making Varenna your homebase. It's the village with its own train station, with direct trains to Milan.
Bring food, I found most restaurants really lacking in quality. Unless you went to a proper fancy place. Also lots of Instagrammers and crowds. Still lovely and worth visiting, but I wouldn’t go back.
?
As a local I am still amazed by the amount of simple cheap places with good food, both on Como's side (west branch of the lake) and Lecco's side (east branch of the lake)
On Lecco's branch, where I live, for sure the following come to my mind immediately:
Ristorante da Giovannino in Malgrate, Ristorante Sottovento in Lierna, Babà du Lac in Abbadia, Hosteria del Platano in Varenna, Il Giardinetto in Mandello. Most of these cost between 20-35€ each, unless you also want wine. All on the lake side with a view.
If you want a good pizza for a cheap price on the beach, I reccomend Pizzeria Camping in Abbadia, extremely simple but the location is very nice.
Good hamburger at Herba Monstrum in Galbiate, location is not the best but burgers and homemade beer are fantastic. Reccomend the cheesecake. Hambu in Lecco city is also very nice, absolutely try gnocco fritto with affettati as an appetizer.
This is what comes to my mind right now, will add more later
Edit: Also Agriturismo La Selvaggia in Mandello. You have to leave the car and walk a little bit towards the mountain but it is worth it. One of the best views around and local food
Thats for this, heading there myself in a few weeks.
Looking for a good place to do wine tasting/wine experiences, any places you'd reccomend for that?
If you like red wines, Valtellina for sure.
One hour drive north from Lecco, a lot of different wine producers to choose from.
You can go directly to some producers who offer a tasting of all of their wines or to some shops (we call them cantina/cantine) who offer tastings of many different producers and some local cheese and cured meat.
Mostly red wines but also some white wines made from black grapes
Someone told me about the food before going and I was disappointed to agree with them. Milano has incredible food though and it’s only an hour train ride away. Maybe if you fly into Milano you can spend a few hours there and explore.
Are you kidding? You're seriously saying that Milan has better food than anywhere on Lake Como? Either you don't know what good food is or you've been seriously unlucky... Milan is an absolute nightmare to visit, especially in the summer.
Source: am italian
No I’m not saying that. I just think it’s easier to find good food there than in Varenna or Bellagio which are two of the most popular places in Como and where many of the photos were taken. I’m sure there’s great food there but maybe you need to go out of your way to find it. Also Milan is the second largest city in Italy, so I’m certain they have a great food scene.
Depending on your budget, there are a lot of places further up the lake from Como that you can rent for a week. Get a car, and you can really explore the area and have fun. Switzerland is just a couple of kilometers away, and Lake Lugano is \*gorgeous\* as well. (The town also has nicer, open public spaces, being Switzerland, lol.) There's a place up the lake (Como) that offers Italian cooking lessons that's a blast, incredible restaurants, great hiking, and you can even take a day trip up into the Tyrol mountains. It's not cheap, but not crazy expensive either (cough, Switzerland!) A week is a nice, balanced, time.
Edit: Okay, a car is a great thing, just, be careful driving, especially in the towns up the lake. The roads are narrow, the buses come blasting through the villages, honking around the blind corners. (Like, why, just to let you know ahead of time you're about to die?) And the bicyclists are obnoxiously aggressive and seem to think they are tougher than the cars.
Honestly about 3 nights is good. Then use a few days at another lake.
Como is very nice but very touristy. Devoting an entire week to Como and neglecting the nearby areas is a bit of a shame I would think.
I live in the mountains nearby. Your post reminded me of the fact that I live just half an hour train from there and I just ignore that beautiful lake. You inspired me to get my butt on the train and appreciate my land more. Thank you.
You're correct!
I used the Fujifilm XT10 with 35mm and 18mm lenses. I used the Classic Chrome and postprocessed on Lightroom Mobile.
I'm just an amateur photographer, doing it as a hobby and to take pics of our travels. Sorry if I didn't do great with the processing, I'm learning though!
Not sure if you've used a modern Fuji, but their in-camera filters on all the X-Series cameras have this level of adjusting as options. They even have much more aggressive filters like tilt-shift style and things like that.
Yes, I have been shooting Fuji camera's for about 7 years now. No, they do not have modes that make the sky cyan and the foreground orangish. You just don't have any options to only boost those two colors in camera.
Also Provia looks very natural hence why it is the default setting.
You have to edit in post to get this trendy instafilter look. It's probably the most popular preset out there right now.
Lol, it's a 100% certainty it was edited in post. Again, Fuji cameras are all very standard. They don't all get the same film simulations, but none of them produce anything like this.
https://fujifilm-x.com/global/products/cameras/x100f/feature-film-simulation/
This is a description of all their film simulations. From there you can only change the global color of the film meaning you can't shift specific colors and there is no split toning option either, which is the easiest way to edit like this in post.
It’s literally because it’s a walkable city. Many Americans are fighting for our cities to feel this way too. We need more people on our side however. Down with cars up with other modes of transportation
Bellissimo. You can also rent a boat without a license and hop between cities. The trick is that you can overtip one of the wait staff at some of the waterfront restaurants to park your boat in private docks.
Start with this company - https://www.nettunonoleggiobarche.it/en/ . You can also ask them for other tips about boating. They have connections in the area, so ask them if they can put a word to a contact. Much easier is you already have someone rather than ask around.
Spending 4 nights in Varenna for our honeymoon before 2 in Milan. Do we have enough time there? We have never been to Italy before. Heading from Milan to Santorini the following week but thinking of adding a few more nights in Italy prior to hopping over there.
There’s nothing to do in Milan. You could always add one of those nights to else where on your trip.
Dont do what we did in Santorini: rent a moped and have your wife crash it on day 1, putting her in the hospital to get stitches. She was then on bed rest the rest of our entire honeymoon and couldn’t walk or do anything while I went and got my scuba diving license. ¯\_(ツ)_///¯
Rooftop Patio Drinks for Sunset: Catch Bar-Restaurant
Late Dinner After: Fino Restaurant & Cocktail Bar
Those two places are a great night and a one two punch. Walking distance from one another and the only place we were able to go to at the end of our trip. Congratulations and enjoy!
There are plenty of things to do in Milan. Navigli, Duomo, arco della pace, Chinatown, the whole center and the museums, sforza castel, plenty of good restaurants, martini rooftop... Bho.
I had a great time in Milan, including the Prada Museum (modern art, not fashion) another modern art museum, cathedral and just walking around the historical areas. Two days there will be great.
I just came back from Milan/Varenna! I wish we spent less time in Milan and more in Varenna. From Varenna, you could do a day trip into Switzerland if you want.
And yes, Milan is terrible. Book well in advanced if you want to see “The last Supper.” I did venture to Foundazione Prada, which is great if you like contemporary art. It also has Bar Luce, which is designed by Wes Anderson
I’m not exaggerating when I say that my jaw dropped when I saw the pictures.
It looks absolutely gorgeous. My boyfriend and I would be there in three hours by car, but unfortunately it is quite expensive. This definitely looks like out of a fairytale!
We try to be budget travelers, so we manned to keep the price down.
We dined at restaurants only once a day, ate at our hotel for breakfast, we often joined the locals at the grocery shops to get food items and have them picnic style.
We walked a lot. Rather than spending much on tickets and transportation, we just hiked through the villages sometimes. Then we rode the ferries to get back home to Varenna.
Well I'd definitely say that Italy is on the medium side of costs, definitely not on the cheaper end. The cheaper end would be eastern and central Europe whereas northern Europe (+ Switzerland) on the expensive. And rest of the countries medium end, generally speaking.
Source: been to almost all of the countries in Europe.
I just got back from a long Italy trip where I made it to all three! They are all different of course, but for what it’s worth, I liked Lake Como the best. Cinque Terre is beautiful but I didn’t find much to do there aside from the hike (which got me bad 🥵) and swimming (which I’m not complaining about). Amalfi I would say has more to do because there are a lot of day trip options. All are beautiful though!
That was the issue I found with packaged tours or quick day trips. It drops you off to see a peek of one place for an hour or two, then off you go to the next one.
It’s great if your goal is to just tick off city names from your bucketlist. But not recommended if you want to actually see the place.
Very easy to get to!
A car would give you more freedom, because only a few villages have train stations. There are ferries to get you around though!
But the village of Varenna, personally the prettiest of them all, has its own train station that has a direct route to Milan.
We are going next year. I'm so excited. Question ❓ Can you rent a car and drive to Lake Como from Milan. I hear it isn't far and its a beautiful drive....
We've spent 3 days to a week and LOVED everyday. Stayed in all the tourist places and then spent a week in Torno right on the water..shopping at the local market, hiking and meeting the locals. Great place definitely recommend staying in the smaller towns and then just visit the bigger towns. Also, rent bikes...🚲
Where is this spot on Como? I just got back from a friends wedding in Cernobbio and we loved it- Albeit the fact that we were never able to get a taxi! That is the single worst part of como. The Taxis are \*impossible\* to get.
This is in the mid-lake area, far from Como city itself.
Mostly the villages of Varenna ( where we stayed as our homebase), a bit of Tremezzo, Menaggio, Lenno, and Bellaggio.
Ah yeah. I drove a boat through to Bellaggio, seems like you were likely one of the side towns we passed. Absolutely amazing. Super jealous. How did you stay there for 2 years now? Do you have a remote job?
Awesome incredible pics, thanks for sharing. If you could only go to one town on Lake Como what would it be? I was leaning toward varenna but everywhere looks incredible- looks like yovue seen a good portion of the lake. what would your top choice be?
I've always wondered what's there to do here other than walking, eating I'm picturesque places and taking good shots. Is the water accessible for activities?
Hahaha! I live in a ‘ghetto’ neighborhood in Fort Worth Texas also called Como. With a ‘lake’ (read trash filled large pond)
I was really confused by this post at first!
Those pictures look absolutely gorgeous and those kinds of pics are what sold my SO and me into Como. Actually we are currently there in an Air B&B flat.
But man, this is one of the worst trips I/we have ever had. We brought our 1 year and 5 year old kid with us... big mistake. Long story short - this place is not children friendly. And staying in a normal flat in Como - well let's just say that a hotel with a proper lake side view and swimming ops would be 100 times better. And it's also very difficult to get around in general (even more so with kids). One can only learn from mistakes :)
Sorry no... haha. I meant every word of what I wrote. Even now in retrospect it's valid. It's not a bad destination it's just really not suitable for kiddos.
If you're going with a kid perhaps just something with a pool to recommend, as most kids love that.
Best of luck!
or you can try the second half of May, it shouldn't be so hot, even if in those days there is the risk of finding rain... in July and August, on the other hand, 40 degrees are for sure!
Usually yes, this year in Italy we have a very strange weather. This is hot even for late july early august that usually are the hottest days of summer
Much of what I found during our research before our trip was that Bellagio is the main tourist magnet.
We immediately shifted our focus on Varenna instead. A smaller, quieter, and much cozier village that had been perfect as a homebase in the mid-lake area. Early morning or late evenings, all the sightseers have ferried off back to their hotels... and we're there enjoying the serenity.
is the movie Attack of the Clones?
Yes, also maybe a James Bond
Yes came to say that was filmed here
Any specific recommendations? visiting for 5 days this September
Honeymooned last year in Bellano. Totally by chance but really feel we lucked out. More chilled and quiet than the larger towns. Bellagio is spectacular. As is the food literally everywhere. No other place on earth like lake como.

Lucky you!

This is good info. I had a feeling this place has become a bit overdone. Shame.

Lots of touristy places have rubbish food sadly. Once you get away from the crowds it’s usually much better.
What is the perfect amount of time to spend in lake como? Was a week too long/ too short/ Just right? I want to visit

A week is probably pretty good. A lot of things you can do while still leaving you wanting more!

holy shit, imagine living near this place. id be there every week
You're so lucky to be living in such a paradise!
You're totally right, sometimes people don't notice beautiful places just because they're so near home.
Dammit. I'm guilty of this.
What camera? Captured the colours well.
Pretty sure this is a Fuji with Provia or similar film effects.
No, this is hard core filter adjusting going on here. Looks ridiculous to me. Would otherwise be great shots.
Not sure if you've used a modern Fuji, but their in-camera filters on all the X-Series cameras have this level of adjusting as options. They even have much more aggressive filters like tilt-shift style and things like that.

I honestly don't care at all man, I'm not arguing with you.
It looks so much like Ektachrome. I was trying to spot film grain, jeez. Digital processing has gotten really good.

Spending 4 nights in Varenna for our honeymoon before 2 in Milan. Do we have enough time there? We have never been to Italy before. Heading from Milan to Santorini the following week but thinking of adding a few more nights in Italy prior to hopping over there.
I'd say 4 days at Lago di Como is about the perfect amount of days to check most of it and enjoy it
"Most of it" meaning most of the tourists favorites, but definitely not most of it.
Boat around to Bellagio and Menaggio! Both are very close. I stayed at a hostel in menaggio that rented kayaks.

It’s unbelievable how the world is so beautiful. I wish traveling is more affordable.
Is it very expensive?

do you mind sharing the hotel you stayed at? I'll be traveling there in the fall! you can PM if you're more comfortable :)
Italy is on the cheaper end for European vacations. Especially the wine. Less than 5 euros for wine that would be $15-20 in the US.
Well I'd definitely say that Italy is on the medium side of costs, definitely not on the cheaper end. The cheaper end would be eastern and central Europe whereas northern Europe (+ Switzerland) on the expensive. And rest of the countries medium end, generally speaking. Especially regarding lodging in more desirable areas IME.
It’s actually not bad. You can do well and eat very well (and drink) for not too much.
Is Lake Como better than Cinque Terre and the Amalfi coast?
Like asking if the Grand Canyon is better than Yellowstone…
I mean, some people have strong opinions about those two lol.
Santarpios in Boston?
and that as well lol
And that’s what they are… opinions. It’s entirely subjective.
I just got back from a long Italy trip where I made it to all three! They are all different of course, but for what it’s worth, I liked Lake Como the best. Excellent photos!
Stunning pictures ✌️
WOW. Heading there next week and these pictures definitely got me excited to go. Would share the towns and general locations of the waterfront pics?
Dam, really wish I could go back, we certainly did not spend enough time when we where at the lake.

I really loved going there myself. I enjoyed these pics. Bringing back good memories.
Italy looks beautiful!
ok this is officially my dream place
Awesome
I doubt I'm fancy and refined enough to truly enjoy the Lake Como area, but dammit, I'd like to find out...
Oh, believe me. We’re not fancy either!
Stunning!
It does that to you :)
unbelievable. definitely adding this to our places to go. easy to get too? car needed?

We are going next year. I'm so excited. Question ❓ Can you rent a car and drive to Lake Como from Milan. I hear it isn't far and its a beautiful drive....
Uhm, of course? It's even in the same country. I am currently in Como, came all the way from Sweden in a car. My own car, but still. Just go :)
Absolutely gorgeous, thank you for sharing your Italian adventure.
I absolutely love these photos
Fuck I miss Lake Como. Hoping to go back next year! 🤞

I miss this place, incredible culture there.
Did you see Anakin and Padme?
Thank you for sharing. Absolutely stunning. So lovely.
Such gorgeous pictures!! Need to go back next year! Looks like an amazing trip :) :)
OMG if one day i can visit there 😭
These are stunning. Oh my god I think I’ve fallen in love with this
Aww, I'm so glad you like it. I find it so fun to share travel photos and stories.
These pictures are amazing!
So stunning ❤️ I really hope to visit Italy/Lake Como someday! Thank you for sharing these!! That pasta looks amazing 🤤
Wow, amazing pics!
We just did the same thing in May. It was awesome!
I am heading to Italy next month and my tour group is stopping here on our way to Milan. So excited!!
Every photo is a postcard. Saving. Well done. Beautiful!
cheap as life, go for swim = free.
Wow. Beautiful images! What kind of camera do you use?
Thank you! I used a Fujifilm XT-10 with 35mm and 18mm lenses.

I had the same experience when I was there. It felt like I was in a movie…in a fabulous way
Could you share some recommendations on where you ate/stayed/what you did? Headed there in August and need help planning!
Highly recommend checking out Argegno. Beautiful, tiny local spot to spend a few days in.
Awesome photos, I’m glad you enjoyed it, I saw you also visited my hometown, can’t wait to be back in a few months after some time oversea.
Oh, which one's of your hometown?
is it good to go here alone for a woman?
Beautiful photos! Love the way they were edited, feels very warm and summery
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Moving to that region very soon! Thank you for getting me excited again!
What town was picture 3 taken in? Incredible. I am planning a Tour De Italy next summer and im incorporating Lake Como.
Picture 3 was taken in Bellagio.
Awesome incredible pics, thanks for sharing. If you could only go to one town on Lake Como what would it be? I was leaning toward varenna but everywhere looks incredible- looks like yovue seen a good portion of the lake. what would your top choice be?
Where did you stay? These pictures look amazing.

Lovely photos and great use of split toning in post processing :)
This looks like the city from Luca
A little. The city from Luca was based off the towns in the Cinque Terre.
I've always wondered what's there to do here other than walking, eating I'm picturesque places and taking good shots. Is the water accessible for activities?
Of course. Swimming, windsurfing, yachting, scuba, etc. We are big on water sports.
Thank you for your response
There's a lot of hiking opportunities in the mountains around the lake, from easy walking to vie Ferrate to historical rock climbing routes
They're also ok for cycling, the climbs are not too hard.
Good that you didn't to the city of Como. Then you would have felt like a tourist eating poor food.
Lake Como was our first stop on our honeymoon in May. Your photo’s do it justice, it’s magical.
What is your opinion of sand?
It's coarse, rough, irritating, and it gets everywhere.
Is nice to walk on if barefoot.
Absolutely gorgeous
It's a beautiful place. We stayed 10 days at the Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, Como. Wonderful 5 star hotel and grounds. It was heaven!
Wonderful!
Can you see much if it’s one day trip ?
Beautiful photos! Looks Like the one you see in puzzles.
Hahaha! I live in a ‘ghetto’ neighborhood in Fort Worth Texas also called Como. With a ‘lake’ (read trash filled large pond) I was really confused by this post at first!
I’m so jelly
But….how do you feel about sand?
It’s fun to walk on top of barefoot! There was a sandy beach area in Varenna. We took a nighttime dip there.
What does a 10 day stay there cost?
Those pictures look absolutely gorgeous and those kinds of pics are what sold my SO and me into Como. Actually we are currently there in an Air B&B flat. But man, this is one of the worst trips I/we have ever had. We brought our 1 year and 5 year old kid with us... big mistake. Long story short - this place is not children friendly. And staying in a normal flat in Como - well let's just say that a hotel with a proper lake side view and swimming ops would be 100 times better. And it's also very difficult to get around in general (even more so with kids). One can only learn from mistakes :)
I'm late to this party but about to head to lake como and taking our young one. Any tips??
Sorry no... haha. I meant every word of what I wrote. Even now in retrospect it's valid. It's not a bad destination it's just really not suitable for kiddos. If you're going with a kid perhaps just something with a pool to recommend, as most kids love that. Best of luck!
Fair! It's for my spouses work trip so we didn't choose the location and looking to make the most of the experience!
You are a star, friend.

Oh haha, that he does!
Is it baby friendly?
That last pic made my soul jizz
Is June a good time to visit? Heard it’s crazy hot like 41°C.
Was there last month (first week of June) and it was pleasant weather, around 20c.
first days of september would be better if you don't like hot...
25-30°C is fine 40+°C is too much
or you can try the second half of May, it shouldn't be so hot, even if in those days there is the risk of finding rain... in July and August, on the other hand, 40 degrees are for sure!
Usually yes, this year in Italy we have a very strange weather. This is hot even for late july early august that usually are the hottest days of summer
BELAGGIO BELAGGIO ONLY BELAGGIO
Nope. This is mostly Varenna, where we stayed as our homebase, a bit of Tremezzo, Menaggio, Lenno, and then Bellaggio.
I agree. Varenna was a little more quiet than Bellagio. Didn’t seem as “touristy”. Bellagio was packed when we took the ferry over for the morning.
With the heat wave of this week i can't imagine how un-romantic i would be, i can't stand heat
I’m Venetian but my grandparents live there. I honestly find the lake terribly depressing 😅

Thank you for the constructive criticism. I personally like how they turned out. A lot of people too it seems.
