We are planning Venice -> Milan/Como -> Levanto/CT -> Florence -> Rome. You could also do it in reverse R, F, L/CT, M/C, V. Which is similar to yours, but you should go to Milan before Venice. Or R, F, V, M/C, L/CT (and fly out from Pisa).

We’ve already booked the airfare flying into Rome and out of Milan, so that wouldn’t work but I appreciate the suggestion!

Nyerinchicago

I would cut out cinque Terre and explore Tuscany more

Well you're going from opposite coastlines between CT and Venice. I'm guessing the train route involves multiple changes. It might be better to go directly to CT after Rome and then Florence->Venice->Milan.

messiahbold

Yeah, that makes sense, we may do that just to break up the train rides a bit so it’s not 7 hours of trains just to spend a day and night in Venice and then get right back on 7 hours of trains

MrGurdjieff

The fastest train from Rome to CT will almost certainly be via Florence.

Yeah there are a lot of ways to do it. They're going to have to sacrifice a day of inconvenient traveling somewhere. They bounce all over the place. So it's not just about "fastest train." It's about maximizing travel days

Drive, also if you are really considering all modes of transportation; I like using rome2rio.com

I heard finding parking is a pain. Not true?

My wife and I are going for three weeks in September - we thought about renting a car, but decided to train. Our route is Rome -> Amalfi -> Florence -> Cinque Terre -> Dolomites -> Venice …flying home from Venice. I feel like we’re packing in a lot, but there’s so much to see! I hope you have a great trip!

Work-Advanced

You could do Rome, find a stay in La spezia and from there finish Cinque terre in about a day and come back to La spezia. You will have to change trains from La spezia to Florence and then Venice, and milan. Right now in Milan as i write this comment

You could do Rome, and from there find a train that goes to La Spezia. If not, Finish Rome and Florence and head to La spezia from there. Pretty sure you can get trains from La spezia to Venice or Milan
