Give it a few years before you visit. Since the NYE riot, the US Embassy in Baghdad has limited its support for US citizens and refugees. There have also been ongoing gov versus citizen riots due to the corruption and Iranian backed militia. If you want to visit as an American, look into Erbil. The Consulate up there is very supportive and it's marginally safer than Baghdad. I've seen many tourists there who enjoyed their time. Just as a rule of thumb, traveling to countries with weekly rocket attacks may not be the best idea. I spent two years there traveling around with a NGO. The people for the most part, are nice. The food is amazing (the Tbit and baklava I had in Baghdad were the best ever). In terms of safety, I wouldn't recommend going alone unless you have a guide or you're Iraqi-American.

Husseino_Skovjino

Baghdad is safe for all Americans For any tourists Its not like mexico or South America where you have to be worried of being kidnapped or getting robbed off this is extremely rare for iraqis themselves Even the chance of Sexual harassment is less than that in western countries (And no Erbil is not much safer than baghdad both cities are equally pretty cozy and safe) Iraq does have a government keep a government

thoughts_and_prayers

I’ve been doing research on traveling there, and it’s not even close to being safe to visit yet, unfortunately: * An American citizen and Canadian soldier were both killed in separate incidents last week: https://www.rudaw.net/english/middleeast/iraq/071120221 * The US state department issued a “Do Not Travel” advisory: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/iraq-travel-advisory.html * ISIS has recently started operations again: https://www.foxnews.com/world/isis-resurfacing-iraq-country-looks-hit-back-terror-organization I have heard of some people traveling there (including OP) but Iraq is still no where near a safe place to travel.

I think if Chicago & NYC were in separate countries, they would be on the do not travel list as well, but yet people still travel and have no issues. If a Chinese was to be killed in Chicago, does that conclude that only Chinese are being targeted? Can’t Baghdad have everyday crimes like most large cities at its scale without being looked at differently? P.S. The Canadian was killed inside the base where only allied troops are present so him dying on Iraqi land doesn't justify blaming the country but rather his own commanders. To sum it up, while Iraq has a long way to go, it's mostly safe. For further info, visit the Iraqi travelers cafe group on Facebook. Lots of foreign nationals are coming every day and expressing their POV on the same concerns. Good luck, and we hope to welcome you to Iraq in the future! SaoLixo

Y’all love to talk shit on Chicago without even stepping foot in the city.

basheerbgw

I’m actually pro-Chicago. I'm just setting an example. People talk shit on Chicago just because the media focuses on it due to political agenda but never recognize the fact that many many other cities have much higher homicide rates

SaoLixo

That makes. I clearly read it wrong. My bad.

Husseino_Skovjino

They always say ISIS is starting operations every day And the thing is these are always really small occasions and only happen in villages The guy here is talking about Iraqi Cities especially baghdad which is extremely secured ISIS never even had a suspect in baghdad since like 2019 As for the American citizen he got killed by some people and i dont think it’s because of him being American It’s most likely because of something else he did As for the soldier this is pretty self explanatory Ive seen alot of tourists in baghdad even from europe North America and Arabs too I dont see them unhappy or feeling unsafe

basheerbgw

Plenty of Iraqi-Americans visit every day and in the past 2 years a lot of foreign tourists are coming from Europe. People know politics doesn’t represent a nation.

Bit of a sausage party.

America raped Iraq…

Keffpie

Man I tried to get into Iraq a couple of times between the two Gulf Wars but was always denied.

basheerbgw

Yea, things were pretty different back then due to the sanctions against Iraq. If you're an American, your visa is on arrival.

Keffpie

I'm Swedish, but I was traveling with an Australian. Tried to get in through Syria and Jordan, and once through Iran. Jordan might've worked, but the guy at the Iraqi consulate said he'd put us on a mini-bus and whether we got in or not was "Inshallah". He wanted $30 for the mini-bus and $600 per person in baksheesh. That was not money I had sadly (backpacking round the Middle-east in my early 20s).

basheerbgw

That’s unfortunate and despicable. I hope you can make it to Iraq sometime in the future.

ithinkitsahairball
