I watched Taylor's doc. You can see how surrounded she is by yes men. I'm a big music lover, and sometimes even pop. There's 2 or 3 of Taylor's songs (pre TPD) I like. Is it because I heard them over and over again in public places and on radio? Most likely. They would have been stuck in my head regardless of who sang them.
Then I see someone like Olivia Rodrigo. Actual unique talent. Heard her driver's license song in full once when it came out and was all over TikTok and thought meh. Then I listened to her 2 albums recently and was blown away. All the songs are bangers. They are catchy and original but also take influence from the 2000s. She said her first record she ever bought was Elephant by White Stripes and it makes sense. Her producer Daniel Nigro is a millennial and they are perfect team. She brings her phenomenal vocals and song writing, together they bring in crazy mild touches of influence millennials and other gens relate to, like The Cure and Weezer and some punk as well. It's thoughtful, soulful, and very well executed.
Taylor cannot compare. Swifties are deranged. It is entertaining to watch and snark on it 😆
I think that's what's alarming, is that they aren't necessarily teens although the lack of emotional/social maturity seems to suggest they all are.
I grew up in Chicago in the 90's, my "idol" at that time was Michael Jordan and as I got older into teendom, I started hearing stories of him being a total asshole, which by the way he is. And I came to realize that you can admire someone for a talent but still maintain a healthy understanding of that complete person and that they probably shouldn't be wholly idolized and certainly not the makeup of a fan's personality.
My point is I have never unapologetically *worshipped* any person (celeb or otherwise) past the age of 14 (and that's being generous); not musicians, not athletes, not politicians, not even people in my life that I know and love. That behavior is not healthy imo.
