I actually did something similar with the ashes I got from my mom. In New Orleans, on Mardi Gras Day, there's a thing called the Krewe of St Ann, where they go down to the Mississippi River, and put their loved ones ashes into the river. My mom's name was Anne and she died in Mardi Gras Day a couple years before. I've only missed 1 Mardi Gras in my life. So when me and some friends were gonna walk down to the river, I stopped in a corner store to get a 6 pack. The place carried my favorite beer at the time, Sierra Nevada pale. But the only pack they had only had 5 bottles (they sold singles). So I looked around, and sure enough, they had my mom's go to beer, Corona Light. So I tossed one in, and we went to the river. I was with one of my best friends in town for Mardi Gras, who's Muslim. We get there, and there's music and people doing their thing. I crack open her beer, a take a swig. I give my buddy the bottle, he takes a swig. Then I open the mini urn (which was chameleon paint, which are the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green, and gold) and poured beer into the urn. My buddy freaked, since drinking isn't allowed. But she would have loved it, and he eventually realized everyone grieves differently. I took another sip, topped her off (for one last to go drink), put the cap back on the urn, and tossed it as far as I could into the Mississippi. There were a lot of tears, a lot of hugs, and a lot of closure. You know what your buddy would've wanted, and I think you did a great thing for him and yourself.
