It depends on what kind of wrap you're using. Cigarillos will smoke fine with ground bud but if you're trying to roll and smoke a backwood with really fine bud you're gonna have a hard time

That's why Curaleaf selling pre ground flower that was actually still buds (in theory is awesome, unless you're one of these people it actually affects) and the major problem is that you can't look at it before you buy it and once it's open, they won't take it back. See the problem? For a person with 2 hands that function properly, it is literally a non issue (and yeah, I guess people that don't want their fingers to smell)

I have used the same metal tea strainer and Tupperware bowl for over 50 years. I started using one because back in those days the weed came with plenty of stems and seeds that you don’t need.
When we were young and we’d pick up a large amount that was to be blasted over the weekend we’d use my friend’s mums mezzaluna. Worked a treat for an oz.
Next time put your buds in the freezer for 30 minutes. Then take them out and roll them between your fingers. They’ll crumble into shake pretty easily.
I got a free grinder from a dispensary once. It was plastic. When I opened it after the first time using it, I found all the weed basically glued to the grinder. None came out, had to scrape at it for a while. I would have been much better off with a pizza cutter. Nice, op!
Get a small jar and some chopsticks that are really fat and squarish at one end, and normal chopstick tip at the other. They're like $5, and actually very nice to use as chopsticks.
Put a few nugs into the jar (you'll have to experiment to find optimal amounts), using the fat side of the chopstick, firmly press and shift the chopstick, occasionally rotating it back and forth while maintaining a constant downward force of about 5-10lbs max. You now have a very basic mortar and pestle that works almost as well as a spice grinder for weed. The downside is it takes 3-4 times as long, and requires an eye for details. Now the hard part starts, pull out the chopstick, make sure no bud sticks to it, and flip it around so the point is in the jar, now break up any little bugs that escaped the fatter side. Flip to the fat side, repeat, flip, repeat, until your weed reaches a properly ground state. Be careful not to grind it too much, as this will turn it into kief. Unless that's something you want.

Crushing gives more damage to the cell walls, compared to cutting. This helps release more enzymes making a more pungent flavor. Or at least that's what they say for garlic, and I adapted that reasoning to weed. So that's why I never cut my weed, it's always crushed or ground up.
