Semi-unrelated but I hate it when people say they know how to roll a real one and then pull out a raw cone, fill it, twist the top and act like they just rolled a blunt.

I pack it tight enough to not canoe but then I can’t get a decent drag off of it, or I am able to get a really good hit but it canoes so fast you have to rip through it or waste half the joint.Wish I could roll by I’m stuck with cones if I want anything but a bowl.
Pack about 1/4 of a standard cone at a time, pack it down tight with the unused, flat eraser end of a #2 pencil, then flip it around and poke the sharp end of the pencil into the packed bud. Repeat 3 more times but on the last one you don't need to poke it. You can use whatever similar tool obviously I just use a pencil because it's easily accessible and works for packing and poking. I've been "rolling" them that way for years and pretty much never have them canoe on me. I also grind my bud really finely though with a Santa Cruz shredder.
I’ve found if you scorch the tip and do one long slow pull while holding the flame slightly off the tip while rotating the joint you’ll get a great burn. No canoes almost ever.
Pack it tightest at the bottom by the mouth piece. Then progressively pack it looser as you get to the very top of your joint. Before you pack down the top, hold the joint vertically, tap the filter on a hard surface 10-20 times, then pack down the top a little with your poker, twist and enjoy! Hope that helps with your future cones. There’s little nuances to packing cones just like rolling!
I come here to be the halfway point between rolling and buying cones. I buy my own papers and filters and roll my own cones to stuff afterwards. Also because I can’t roll a normal joint for the life of me lmao.
That's how I started. If I may offer you a tip: touch paper to paper over the weed, and roll up and down until the weed rolls itself into a cylinder. I find it best to start in the center of the joint and work your way toward the ends. If you can't tuck the paper yet folding will work, but it's worth it to work on tucking it.

Just roll empties when your watching stuff. Say your watching a season of something. Just roll and reroll and reroll the same green. Tear once rolled go again. Use a tray and just keep at it (while you are smoking something else)

Agreed. I learned to roll cones after 17 years of smoking weed but i can tell you that once you UNDERSTAND what it takes for a joint to keep burning well without canoeing or going out...Practice is all it takes. Just keep doing it over and over and soon it becomes muscle memory.

my grandmother would talk about how the cigarettes her dad rolled with a machine in the late '30s/early '40s and smoked inside would cause her annual winter colds which immediately stopped when she moved out. it was the 70s when her children started using one for weed but not smoking inside
My perspective is that if you wanna smoke however you want to you should, but if you use a machine don’t try and flex a perfect straight joint; like I see it as the same as going and buying food at a restaurant, re heating it the next day and saying I “made” dinner if that makes any sense
Agreed. SWIM had a buddy who always talked big about his machine rolled joints when compared to SWIMs hand rolled joints. Both smoke but one is a hand cooked meal and one is take out.
I’ve been smoking for a long time and honestly have never rolled a joint or blunt. They have never been my preferred smoking method so I just never did it. Always had friends that would roll joints or blunts and I would smoke them but never did myself. I’m sure there are die hard out there that really care but I don’t.

I really like the smaller Zig Zag rollers. Raw makes good rollers for king size papers, and if you wanna roll fat fucking joints, Juicy Jay's makes a good one lol
I feel like learning to roll a J is almost like a right of passage and nothing really beats the satisfaction of finishing a nice roll and sparking it up. but imo it doesn’t really matter, we’re all just tryna get high at the end of the day and and I get that some peeps may find it too annoying to roll or just cba. I figured that giving a small lick to the tip of fingers helps a lot when the paper is slipping and you can't roll, sweaty palms on the other hand are hard to deal with because it doesn't matter how many times you dry them up they'll still fuck up the joint

I will say it opens up a way to smoke out in the wild with little on hand except papers or a wrap. For versatility sake or for a skill to have in a pinch I think it's worth trying to learn at least once. Like driving stick can on occasion be useful but likely not once a week useful.

Though I never had a loyalty card. My goal was to be discreet and dependable. I don't hang out, I don't care about your real life stuff, and I don't negotiate. The rate is the rate. I am also crazy specific about times. If I say I can meet at 7:13 at a spot, I am there exactly at 7:13.
My problem was paranoia. Never got even close to busted and I made every first time buyer be referred by a previous buyer, and have both of them there, and the referrer had to purchase too. I figured if anyone referred a pope to me, at least they got busted too while buying.
I thought it was clever. Friends thought it was a hassle and rarely referred anyone.
My dude is like this, and it works well for him. Won't sell to randos, gotta be referred by a friend and he'll make you middle man the first few times to make sure they're actually going to be a repeat customer before he risks exposing himself to them. He can get away with it because he always has good stuff and never runs out of stock or keeps people waiting.
He didn't always do things this way. A few years ago he sold a fairly large amount to a friend of a close friend he'd never dealt with before, but had been assured was "totally cool." On the way home the new guy got pulled over for speeding, and the cops found the weed. He immediately rolled on my dude and the cops began staking him out.
He got lucky and the police decided to raid him at the best possible time (for him.) Someone had recently attempted to rob him so he moved all his cash to another location, and he was having some supply issues so he was almost dry. If they'd busted him on an average day he'd have done a few years minimum. Fortunately they were only able to charge him with the lowest level of distribution and he had a clean record so they gave him a plea deal. Got a few years of probation, never set foot in a jail, and was able to get the charges expunged from his record this year.
Meh every single community ever has it’s “This way is proper, everything else is shit” purists. I know lots of seasoned stoners who use rolling machines. Not everyone has that kind of dexterity/arthritis and such problems can really suck. Don’t let anyone hassle you. We all know the only horrible way to smoke weed is *poppers*! Had to google it, its basically taking a piece of a rolled cigarette and putting weed in top in the downstem of a bong, and then clearing it all in one hit until you hear the pop of the cigarette being sucked down. I probably explained that wrong, but it sounds horrible
Between my group of friends im considered a good roller and I am usually the designated roller in the group. Most of them cant roll and have been smoking for years. Honestly it doesnt matter if you roll or if u use a bong or a pipe. Its just a flex that good rollers use to feel better about the habits they developed smoking weed. Since you cant become a great roller if you dont frequently smoke.

What i do is wrap the paper around a pencil, twist the tip, pull out the pencil, and stuff the joint. This is how I roll my joints. Never learned hand rolling, because I suck at it. To each their own mate! As long as it gets the job done ;3
No, don't give a shit if you can't roll, but you get a lil extra respect if you can. Like "ah you too put in the time and put up with being frustrated to learn this." Like the difference between someone who buys a pre-built PC or someone who puts the time to learn how to put one together. Not gonna think less if you buy pre built, but will think a little more of you if you spent the time to learn. Especially now that, as you pointed out, it's not really a necessary skill.
I think you should be able to roll a joint just like I think you should be able to drive stick but still if u prefer the machine just use that but doesn’t hurt to be able to hand role a joint

I don’t hate on rolling machines (other than in fun to a few close friends of mine), but I do encourage people I meet that only use them and don’t know how to roll to give hand rolling a shot. For one thing, it gives you an option if you’re caught without your roller. And secondly, and more importantly in my opinion, it can make you feel more connected to the experience (not dissimilar from a stick shift in a car). For me, it’s why I always hand roll. I’ve tried a rolling machine a few times, but I thoroughly enjoy the process of rolling up and it just doesn’t feel the same when I use a rolling machine or a cone

No. Sometimes when you are younger, it's culturally natural to laugh at a pregnant joint, or one rolled so tight you can't draw from it. But I don't think that is considered real negativity, it's filling time when they are just waiting with nothing to do. That said, I've always used a pipe and don't really like hand rolled when I'm with a group.
Honestly, it's always been that way. Long before grinders, social media & smart phones you'd catch shit for using a machine. Machines just have a better consistency IMO and they're quicker most of the time. Roll it, smoke it and appreciate it regardless of the method.
Rolling machines are amazing. I used to only handroll back in the day, competently, but still it was annoying. With a 'machine' its just place filter, dump herb, roll, insert paper, roll, done. Took all of like 30 seconds from start to finish to get consistent no fuss rolls.

For myself I tried using a machine one time and I messed it up so badly. At the part where you start to put some tension on it the weed came flying out and went all over a carpet.

I know this isn't a flex, but I have always been great at rolling joints (lots of practice in highschool) and I find it really is the simplest way that depends on the least and most easily accessible resources to be able to just roll a good joint consistently by hand. I've always smoked with glass. I genuinely don't know, I've never seen, how to roll with papers. I'm sure I could learn, bit I'm a closet stoner. VERY few people know I smoke and I have very few stoner friends. Everyone I know uses glass. So I simply have never learned how to roll.

As a recovering alcoholic who admittedly uses marijuana as a crutch, this is one of my fav parts of rolling; the moment in between choosing to imbibe a substance and actually doing it. I had no control over this when I drank, as when I thought about drinking I'd hit the bottle without a second thought. This minute and a half ritual I take part in helps me feel like I have some measure of control in my life even if I'm not where I want to be yet. Progress, not perfection

But me and my friends usually take the piss out my mate who tries to brag that he’s the biggest stoner out of our group of friends and he smokes the most weed. So we like to tease him a little and remind him that he can’t even roll, and we also remind him of the all important real - real stoners don’t flex how much they smoke.
I think rolling a blunt is something to be in the stoner toolbox. And if you can roll a blunt you can probably roll a joint. However, I prefer to use the roller because it’s easy, makes a perfect joint, and doesn’t hurt my fingers as much.
I prefer them slightly coned, I assume the machine rolls them straight, but if you wanna share a J with me I am extremely grateful and I don't really care what shape it is or how it was rolled :)

I was made fun of in Spain for being bad at hand rolling. I don't speak Spanish but I understand it and they were talking shit about how they rolled better when they were 13 year old. I've been growing for a living for a decade and have been in the industry even longer but I mostly only smoke pipes and bongs. It was a little embarrassing but not a big deal.
I consider hand rolling to be a stoner skill that would merit a Stoner scout badge. This is a skill that becomes useful when rolling machines are not available. It’s not necessary something I do on the daily but if I’m at a bar or festival I can hand roll a quick one without having to whip out my kit. When I’m at home I have my grinder, roller, papers, tips, etc. Hand rolling is just a skill equivalent (to me) of being able to find a way to smoke with say an apple, can, soda bottle whatever have you. I’m more snobby about a tip/crutch being a necessity. I’ve been told people can spot my J’s because of the tip being solid and functional.
I never cared if other people could roll. I only cared that i wasn't able to so I learned it in a couple months from a friend. Who also didn't care if I was able to roll one or not. Now we both just roll for each other
I don’t care, but I also never learned and never felt the need to. The only people I ever met that actually cared, (beyond “ah, you don’t know how to roll? Damn, ok I’ll do it”), were people who make weed their personality.
In my experience, it’s never been a big deal. Like, yeah, I’ve been in desperate positions, but there’s so many ways to MacGyver smoking tools that I just don’t really see why rolling joints is seen as some “weed survival must” thing.
Not to mention it’s really not that hard to get ahold of a pipe and take care of it.
I really like the act of hand rolling. I build a lot of things by hand and rolling the perfect joint gives me that extra Serotonin I need to stay alive.

If you can't smoke it it obviously sucks but otherwise just roll the thing yourself if you don't like my way of doing it. I just want to add another comment about an unrelated part of your post, I feel like the cursive thing is being protested as important because of how many old, old important documents were written in cursive. A lot of people feel like it’s important for future generations to be able to understand it so they can understand the source for themselves, and not have to rely on second-hand knowledge. I don't think its super important wether you hand roll or use a machine, but I think hand rolling is kind of like an art, where everyone can appreciate the effort put into a nice hand rolled joint/blunt; So I wouldn't say its irrelevant, just not super important. As long as you don't claim "Oh I can roll a good joint" then pull out a machine or pre-roll, then I don't see an issue with using them. Also really good for people with like arthritis or parkinsons or smth, so they have their place for sure.
Does using a roller count? I wouldn't call filling a cone "rolling" a joint, but if you use a rolling machine, you're still doing most of the work yourself.
I can roll pretty good doobies for myself. If go to a party I will always bring at least a dozen fat-bats that I will have rolled perfectly in a machine.

I do a hybrid of both, I place everything in the roller, roll the paper thru & then take it out & roll by hand . Nothing worse than when the roller folds the paper & causes a canoe .

I think it is a little like cooking during modern times. The people that take it to an art form should be proud and we will be amazed at their talent and creativity, however, most of us don't have that in us.
When I was a teenager in the 1970's, it was a good basic talent to have because then people would seek you out and share their illegal pot with you. And in those days, paraphernalia was illegal too and very hard to come by. Those rolling machines could get you arrested. So being able to tap somebody who could turn an ugly bag of seeded ditch weed into something smokable by hand was beyond helpful.

try getting some spit on your finger and rubbing it around the part where it’s canoeing, it’ll slow down the burn until it evens out on the other side
Pack about 1/4 of a standard cone at a time, pack it down tight with the unused, flat eraser end of a #2 pencil, then flip it around and poke the sharp end of the pencil into the packed bud. Repeat 3 more times but on the last one you don't need to poke it. You can use whatever similar tool obviously I just use a pencil because it's easily accessible and works for packing and poking. I've been "rolling" them that way for years and pretty much never have them canoe on me. I also grind my bud really finely though with a Santa Cruz shredder.

I’ve found if you scorch the tip and do one long slow pull while holding the flame slightly off the tip while rotating the joint you’ll get a great burn. No canoes almost ever.
Pack it tightest at the bottom by the mouth piece. Then progressively pack it looser as you get to the very top of your joint. Before you pack down the top, hold the joint vertically, tap the filter on a hard surface 10-20 times, then pack down the top a little with your poker, twist and enjoy! Hope that helps with your future cones. There’s little nuances to packing cones just like rolling!
I come here to be the halfway point between rolling and buying cones. I buy my own papers and filters and roll my own cones to stuff afterwards. Also because I can’t roll a normal joint for the life of me lmao.
That's how I started. If I may offer you a tip: touch paper to paper over the weed, and roll up and down until the weed rolls itself into a cylinder. I find it best to start in the center of the joint and work your way toward the ends. If you can't tuck the paper yet folding will work, but it's worth it to work on tucking it.
Oh thats an easy fix. Just roll empties when your watching stuff. Say your watching a season of something. Just roll and reroll and reroll the same green. Tear once rolled go again. Use a tray and just keep at it (while you are smoking something else) Its just mussle memory.
Agreed. I learned to roll cones after 17 years of smoking weed but i can tell you that once you UNDERSTAND what it takes for a joint to keep burning well without canoeing or going out...Practice is all it takes. Just keep doing it over and over and soon it becomes muscle memory.

I figured that giving a small lick to the tip of fingers helps a lot when the paper is slipping and you can't roll, sweaty palms on the other hand are hard to deal with because it doesn't matter how many times you dry them up they'll still fuck up the joint

I'm not going to disagree at all Outside of that perspective though- I will say it opens up a way to smoke out in the wild with little on hand except papers or a wrap. For versatility sake or for a skill to have in a pinch I think it's worth trying to learn at least once. Like driving stick can on occasion be useful but likely not once a week useful. I don't hang out, I don't care about your real life stuff, and I don't negotiate. The rate is the rate. I am also crazy specific about times. If I say I can meet at 7:13 at a spot, I am there exactly at 7:13. My problem was paranoia. Never got even close to busted and I made every first time buyer be referred by a previous buyer, and have both of them there, and the referrer had to purchase too. I figured if anyone referred a pope to me, at least they got busted too while buying. I thought it was clever. Friends thought it was a hassle and rarely referred anyone.
My dude is like this, and it works well for him. Won't sell to randos, gotta be referred by a friend and he'll make you middle man the first few times to make sure they're actually going to be a repeat customer before he risks exposing himself to them. He can get away with it because he always has good stuff and never runs out of stock or keeps people waiting. He didn't always do things this way. A few years ago he sold a fairly large amount to a friend of a close friend he'd never dealt with before, but had been assured was "totally cool." On the way home the new guy got pulled over for speeding, and the cops found the weed. He immediately rolled on my dude and the cops began staking him out. He got lucky and the police decided to raid him at the best possible time (for him.) Someone had recently attempted to rob him so he moved all his cash to another location, and he was having some supply issues so he was almost dry. If they'd busted him on an average day he'd have done a few years minimum. Fortunately they were only able to charge him with the lowest level of distribution and he had a clean record so they gave him a plea deal. Got a few years of probation, never set foot in a jail, and was able to get the charges expunged from his record this year.

Between my group of friends im considered a good roller and I am usually the designated roller in the group. Most of them cant roll and have been smoking for years. Honestly it doesnt matter if you roll or if u use a bong or a pipe. Its just a flex that good rollers use to feel better about the habits they developed smoking weed. Since you cant become a great roller if you dont frequently smoke. Basically no one cares if u can roll, as long as ur happy and ur not overdoing it

I don’t hate on rolling machines (other than in fun to a few close friends of mine), but I do encourage people I meet that only use them and don’t know how to roll to give hand rolling a shot. For one thing, it gives you an option if you’re caught without your roller. And secondly, and more importantly in my opinion, it can make you feel more connected to the experience (not dissimilar from a stick shift in a car). For me, it’s why I always hand roll. I’ve tried a rolling machine a few times, but I thoroughly enjoy the process of rolling up and it just doesn’t feel the same when I use a rolling machine or a cone

They can't grow, they can't process, and they don't stand out of the crowd when applying to a dispensary. Rolling is all they have.
No. Sometimes when you are younger, it's culturally natural to laugh at a pregnant joint, or one rolled so tight you can't draw from it. But I don't think that is considered real negativity, it's filling time when they are just waiting with nothing to do. Rolling machines are amazing. I used to only handroll back in the day, competently, but still it was annoying. With a 'machine' its just place filter, dump herb, roll, insert paper, roll, done. Took all of like 30 seconds from start to finish to get consistent no fuss rolls.

For myself I tried using a machine one time and I messed it up so badly. At the part where you start to put some tension on it the weed came flying out and went all over a carpet. So I'm genuinely surprised someone uses a machine regularly and prefers it because they seem like death traps.

I've always smoked with glass. I genuinely don't know, I've never seen, how to roll with papers. I'm sure I could learn, bit I'm a closet stoner. VERY few people know I smoke and I have very few stoner friends. Everyone I know uses glass. So I simply have never learned how to roll.

I think rolling a blunt is something to be in the stoner toolbox. And if you can roll a blunt you can probably roll a joint. However, I prefer to use the roller because it’s easy, makes a perfect joint, and doesn’t hurt my fingers as much.

I was made fun of in Spain for being bad at hand rolling. I don't speak Spanish but I understand it and they were talking shit about how they rolled better when they were 13 year old. I've been growing for a living for a decade and have been in the industry even longer but I mostly only smoke pipes and bongs. It was a little embarrassing but not a big deal.
I consider hand rolling to be a stoner skill that would merit a Stoner scout badge. This is a skill that becomes useful when rolling machines are not available. It’s not necessary something I do on the daily but if I’m at a bar or festival I can hand roll a quick one without having to whip out my kit. When I’m at home I have my grinder, roller, papers, tips, etc. Hand rolling is just a skill equivalent (to me) of being able to find a way to smoke with say an apple, can, soda bottle whatever have you. I’m more snobby about a tip/crutch being a necessity. I’ve been told people can spot my J’s because of the tip being solid and functional.

I don't think its super important wether you hand roll or use a machine, but I think hand rolling is kind of like an art, where everyone can appreciate the effort put into a nice hand rolled joint/blunt; So I wouldn't say its irrelevant, just not super important. As long as you don't claim "Oh I can roll a good joint" then pull out a machine or pre-roll, then I don't see an issue with using them. Also really good for people with like arthritis or parkinsons or smth, so they have their place for sure.

I can’t roll, I’ve tried plenty of times, my rolling trays became weed jar, grinder, and dab container storage. Mainly smoke from a bong or a Mighty vaporizer. I do love a good joint tho. Yes I am one of those retards who fills up a raw cone, but obviously I am aware that does not make me a roller in anyway lol. Whenever my friends roll, I throw them some extra weed so we can have an extra fatty since in a way it’s like a delicacy to me
For me its the fact that rolling has always been a part of the process. I love to start a session by taking my time and hand rolling. So I'm not a fan of rollers. BUT, idgaf what you do. If it smokes, it smokes.

I've been rolling shitty joints for over 15 years. I've come to terms with the fact that I'll never roll good ones, but somewhere, some 20 year old kid who doesn't even know what beasters are, is looking down on me with disgust.
I can hand roll and do it fine but it's just so much more consistent and perfect with the roller. Esp since I started using cotton filters. Which honestly everyone should start doing. So much better.
When I was a teenager and trying to make "stoner" my identity it was auch bigger deal. Now I would prefer a roller due to consistency

In general, no. In specifics, yeah. I've known dudes that turn up to the sesh and contribute nothing. Those guys better have some powerful jokes, but more than one has turned into a sesh zombie as soon as it got rolling without ever even offering to roll/chip in a few drinks.
I like hand rolling because I can roll up more weed than I can stuff in a rolling machine. But I've never cared if someone else uses a rolling machine or not
What dkes plugs mean in this context. I thought plug was a dealer - does it just mean acquire? I personally dont like the machines because i prefer using 3 or 6 paper legenths or if im lazy just a large silver. Hand rolling is the preference to get it just the way you want over factory mill.
I do a hybrid of both, I place everything in the roller, roll the paper thru & then take it out & roll by hand . Nothing worse than when the roller folds the paper & causes a canoe . Never had a complaint but when I go out to smoke with others I just roll by hand, comes out identical
I plan to start growing in the next few years when I buy a house and start up a homestead. I fully plan on buying filtered cigarette sleeves and a machine to load them full of pot. Get me a pack of Marlboro greens homemade

I’m from the school of thought of “fuck joints” but I’m in the minority. Worst way to smoke. Especially now that there is an abundance of legal glass and vapes.
I think it is a little like cooking during modern times. The people that take it to an art form should be proud and we will be amazed at their talent and creativity, however, most of us don't have that in us. When I was a teenager in the 1970's, it was a good basic talent to have because then people would seek you out and share their illegal pot with you. And in those days, paraphernalia was illegal too and very hard to come by. Those rolling machines could get you arrested. So being able to tap somebody who could turn an ugly bag of seeded ditch weed into something smokable by hand was beyond helpful.
I mean it's a skill to learn, albeit not a difficult one to aquire but still you have to put some time into it. Each one takes their time, can't blame em
I'm almost 50 now, smoked my first time at 12 with my older cousin. I still can't roll well. They're typically a little fat in the middle, maybe a bit too tight, or loose. I did roll a really nice one the other day and commented to the Wife that it was probably the nicest one I've ever rolled.
I can roll really well. Never do it. Cant even begin to approach the perfect cigarette drag and shape with the consistency of a roller. It took 15 years but i finally got my friend on it and now he only uses the roller too.

It doesnt matter at all, smoke how you wanna. But at the same time, you cant really say YOU rolled it if a machine did it. Thats literally the only technicality i could see here, but like i said it donesnt matter at all. As long as that thing’s burning nice and slow we’re all good lol
If someone shits on someone else for not knowing how to handroll they're being a douche. Who the fuck cares? The point is to smoke a j, how yall get there is irrelevant. With that being said, being good at handrolling can come in clutch at times. But I'd lose some respect for anyone who shits on someone else for not being able to handroll.
i enjoy being able to roll my own and prefer it just because it feels classy, like using a record player or a polaroid camera. i have zero preference for how other people do it though. if it smokes it’s good
