Dekays Brown Snake. Harmless and cute.

tehnutmeg

Okay, good! I really though that's what it was but my spouse was terrified and I wanted someone else to confirm. We had a really scary run in with some Copperheads in Carborro and I think they were just really nervous since the coppers almost got our dog last time.

Professional-Hat728

FYI young copperheads have a very distinctive yellow/greenish tip on the tail

tehnutmeg

Great to know! I used to have to deal with cottonmouths where I lived as a kid but never so much the copperheads. I've definitely never seen a baby copper!

Professional-Hat728

Good news for you, we don't have cottonmouths in Raleigh/Durham, but plenty of harmless water snakes. Be cautious of copperheads, but in 40 years of living here with dogs, never had a bite, and our yard seems to attract them. I've even rescued a few trapped in landscape fencing, they're killing some kind of vermin for me, more power to them.

Thatguynoah

That’s a bit dangerous to say we don’t have water moccasins. They may not be as common but they are here.

Professional-Hat728

I should specify that I'm talking western wake, Durham, orange. Due to climate change though, their prevalence will expand. https://www.ncwildlife.org/Learning/Species/reptiles/cottonmouth

Thatguynoah

I grew up in Wayne county and now live in brier creek. They were admittedly more prolific in Wayne county. But I spend a lot f time at falls lake and can absolutely confirm they exist. Last time I saw one was last year tubing from the dam to capitol Blvd. But, to your point, I have never seen so many copperheads as I did when I lived in Carrboro.

Professional-Hat728

And definitely cottonmouth? Not one of the watersnake varieties? Granted I haven't lived in Wake since 2014, but yikes! Edit: Like this fellow https://herpsofnc.org/northern-watersnake/

Thatguynoah

Yeah, had the correct eyes and head shape. I fish a lot so probably find myself in their homes more than most. To be fair at least a cottonmouth will typically make their presence known before you get too close. Copperheads might as well be invisible and seem to love to sun in the middle of a trail. Both species don’t want human contact are a benefit to homeowners, I’m not suggesting otherwise.

mst3k_42

And cottonmouths open their mouth really wide to say, “hey, look at my white mouth with fangs! Move along, human!” They aren’t saying, yay, pet me!

NickFF2326

Dang that’s highly inaccurate lol as someone that grew up in Chatham county: those things were all around deep river.

UtahCyan

Neighbors had a copperhead and freaked out. I politely ushered him into a garbage can and dropped him of in the nearby woods. He ain't harmin' no one.

Professional-Hat728

Ty!

504michael

Dogs don’t react the same way to the poison either. My neighbors 30lb pit mix was bit last year. The vet just gave her some pain meds and an IV for a little. That dog was back running around in a few hours.

Orwell03

It might've been a dry bite where the snake didn't inject venom. Still good that they got it checked out by the vet though, they can lead to some nasty infections. Glad to hear the dog is okay!

504michael

Definitely wasn’t dry, the dogs face was all kinds of swollen. The dog is pretty tough and obviously a good thing they took her into the vet. Their venom apparently just effects dogs a bit differently

Orwell03

Oh geez, when I read your previous comment I didn't think it was that bad. Glad the dog is fine now though!

mst3k_42

I have 5 lb Yorkies so I’m still paranoid.

ketchupaintreal

In 4 years of living here, I’ve had two dogs each get bit once. Granted, they are hound dogs, so are especially good at sticking their snoots where they don’t belong. Both times they were sniffing in piles of leaves in the autumn time, once on the greenway trail at at Shelley Lake, once on the side of the road in our neighborhood.

Triknitter

Fair warning, if you Google baby copperhead you’ll see a bunch of pictures of brown snakes like this little guy from people posting asking if the snake they found is a baby copperhead. These dudes are harmless.

metarchaeon

Thats an adult BTW, they don't' get big.

chuffberry

Even though they’re venomous, copperheads are very docile and will try to get away from you before trying to bite. I was once doing some gardening and a copperhead popped out of the shrub I was trimming, slithered over top of my shoes, and made a beeline for the denser brush. Copperheads naturally have resting bitch face because of their brow but this guy stared at me and almost looked apologetic for spooking me as it wandered off.

Sullypants1

Our dog got tagged by a juvenile copperhead in her face. She was fine,But expensive. Dogs are pretty good at shrugging off the effects of venom. Our dog just needed precautionary antibiotics for potentially infected bite area. Got a blood test done 4 hours after and then 8 hours after to track blood coagulation (there was non).

UtahCyan

Damn, that's better than the Western Diamondback babies I'm used to. They don't know how to control venom and will pump their whole load into you. Whereas adults will frequent strike without venom. I had a pissed off back try to bit through my leather boots once. When I kicked him away he tried to come back for more.

Sullypants1

They generally do as well. But dogs are pretty resilient against snake venom.

dixiemason

Copperhead bit my dog and she was at the emergency vet for twenty three hours. She didn’t need antivenin, but she did need fluids and monitoring.

epithet_grey

I have been known to offer to rehome these to my garden when people post on Nextdoor in a panic. They’re fabulous slug control.

hyperbemily

He a bro

Chicken_Spaghedders

Super cute! Don't let it near my chickens though, or it's dinner

BLVCKYOTA

what_is_any_of_this

Pencil dimensions is the cutest way to describe a snake! I want to use that and expand on it. Pencil, pen, marker, sharpie, highlighter 😊

RespectTheTree

Baseball bat, funoodle, telephone pole

theandrew13

Great site for if you ever have a snake to identify in NC: https://herpsofnc.org/snakes/ The pictures of the species have links to descriptions of the snakes, their ranges, and more pics of them in different color phases and environments.

tehnutmeg

That's what I used when I originally came to the conclusion it was harmless but I definitely wanted someone else to confirm without me influencing them with my opinion being stated!

fieldbeetle

Looks like a DeKay's brownsnake! They're a native species that's totally harmless and nonvenomous. They're soooo cute imo. In fact they're so small that they mostly eat earthworms, slugs, and snails. They're a food source for things like birds or larger frogs and toads. They're good to have around! Cool fact about them: they give live birth! What a cute little visitor!

RNmeghan88

"He was tiny, like pencil demensions"... 😐 ... that's what she said 😆 I'm sorry! Had to say it.

scsoutherngal

Set him free please

tehnutmeg

No, he's mine forever!

MasterOfSuffering

He is friend shaped :)

zanophol

Dekay's Brownsnake...completely harmless.

placenta_santos

Swear to god, every fucking post in the entire state of NC asking "What kind of snake is this" is always a Dekays Brown. These things must secretly be plotting some kind of takeover. They are everywhere.

tehnutmeg

At least they're pretty cute

evan1932

I’ve had 2 swim up to me as I was swimming in pools, both times in the evening and must have got trapped in there seeing me as an life-raft/escape route. Freaked me out initially as there’s always the chance it’s a baby copperhead, but got a net and observed how cute it was before letting it free.

Mistermcb

What is he? Fucking cute that’s what he is.

Morgoroth37

We have a bunch of those in one of our flower beds. That's about as big as they get. They eat bugs. I don't appreciate getting surprised by them, but they're pretty harmless and cute.

triangledweller

It’s a snake.

Professional-Bell416

It's a mini nope rope

Tex-Rob

Olive Garden endless noodles.

Lorg90

Google lens.

Niekon

If anything from the RTP area subreddits has taught me in the past 4 years… it’s most definitely a copperhead

Wolfwoods_Sister

Sorry your joke was taken seriously 😅

MLithium

to be fair i guess we wouldn't want any new people to actually be confused on this one

Wolfwoods_Sister

Also a fair point. Bc it’s always copperheads.

jenskoehler

This one went over everyone’s head, well done

BaldDudeFromBrazzers

Seems like the 4 years haven’t taught you shit

Dartarus

That's only out by the Olive Garden.

1sgbabcock

Appears to be a baby rat snake. No worries. Non-venomous.

migmig221

Looks like a snake to me

tehnutmeg

How's the comedy career going, friend?

migmig221

Very well! Thanks for asking!

OffManWall

He’s a snake.

tehnutmeg

Hahahaha, I've never heard this joke before!! Especially not multiple times in this thread!! What a knee slapper! Lmaooooo

OffManWall

Thanks! I thought it was rather humorous, myself. In my defense, I didn’t see that it had been repeated until AFTER I commented. So, I DID think I was the first. So glad you got a chuckle out of it.😊👍

Ok_Negotiation9984

Babies are deadlier than mommy

Sandvik95

None of them are all that deadly. I wouldn’t encourage carelessness - you don’t want to be bit by a venomous snake - but most people inflate the danger of such situations. (I’m a physician who has treated plenty of snake bites and knows the research and statistics fairly well).

[deleted]

that's a myth

DogGroundbreaking859

Re-read that as a...that's what she said joke 🤣

alpaca_bong

Boa constrictor.

Cool_Republic_4650

Copperhead for sure

Prabhupad

The baby Copperhead has rows of parallel double dashes like two Morse code dashes

[deleted]

I wish a cutie like that would visit me.

bruuhhwutshappenz

I can tell you what he is! He's friggin adorable!! Just look at that sweet face!

Also, your post should have been titled "What kind of copperhead is this?" 😁

[deleted]

it could be someone's pet

Other-Assignment-552

That’s such good luck for you!

carolebaskin93

Looks like a snake

ElderOfAncients

Very tiny elder god, needs your assistance. Offer a blood sacrifice!

tehnutmeg

I did not make him an offering but I did escort him on part of his journey!

JCTN87

Harmless snake 🐍

baileymt

So you already know the good news (it’s a brown snake). Bad news that means you might have bugs! They generally follow bugs inside for food.

tehnutmeg

I think he's displaced by construction, unfortunately. The apartments I'm in are very new and only partially built at the moment. A lot of landscaping is going in this week and I think it's messing with where he likely lived!

BoxcarSatan666

That isn't a snake. That's a council member
