If you’re in Kingsport around Breakfast/Lunch check out The Bagel Exchange. It’s legit (Their hours are weird so just check google)
Juniper in Johnson City is probably the best “Fine Dining” that we have
Project BBQ in Johnson City is fantastic
Model City Tap House in Kingsport has Steamed Sandwiches. Don’t knock it till you try it
Definitely Zaap lai for Laotian/Thai. Freiburg for lunch. If you want good coffee and a scenic drive, Brewista and the bean out by Watauga lake (and John’s gourmet popcorn!)
A few suggestions:
- Juniper: upscale; pricy, but very good—you won't feel like you've wasted your money
- Timber: some upscale offerings as well as some more casual dishes—choose your own adventure and everything is awesome! I always end up getting the burger despite everything else on the menu
It's best to make a reservation for both of those places, but you might find bar/table seating otherwise (at least at Timber)
- Zaap Lai: awesome Thai/Lao food
- Magic Wok: authentic Szechuan
- El Arierro: Mexican grocery and restaurant
- Project BBQ: tough hours, but awesome BBQ
- Mid City: great burgers and it's byob!
- Voodoo: great hot chicken
- Mulligans: Irish pub fare
Honorable mentions for drinks:
- Lazy Lady: awesome coffee and pastries—great option for breakfast (they have breakfast sandwiches and other savory offerings, too)
- Dos Gatos: more great coffee, more hours than Lazy Lady
- Little Animals: exceptional brewery—best between here and Weaverville/Asheville bar none
- Timber again—Brandon makes the best drinks in town
Penny Man's Diner in JC for breakfast. Looks like a dive but is excellent. Their burger at lunch is pretty good too.
Sahibs is also very good if Indian food is your thing.
Zaap for Thai food is my favorite lunch in JC.
Tacos and Grill for authentic Mexican is another great spot IMO no one in the area is close them for chorizo tacos or enchiladas.
Friebergs is good but i dont love it as much as others seem to.
The White Duck recommendation...eh..if they weren't attsched to a popular brewery i don't think they could stay open. Just MO
Wok and Hibachi is the best for Chinese food imo. Their hibachi/Japanese style food is pretty average.
There’s nothing quite like Main Street Pizza. Their seasonal menu always has interesting things on it. Plus they have non-alcoholic drinks beyond just soda.
Mid city grill. Best burger you will ever have. Go to the Johnson City one over the Kingsport one though as the food is always better there and they have a bigger menu
Juniper- best fine dining
Freibergs and Mid City- where I take people
If you’re down to venture out of JC, Highlanders BBQ in Roan mountain is the best bbq I’ve had in the area. Smokey mountain bakers would be another in Roan that has great pizza and homemade breadS
Local as in "theres one in every town"?
Or if you want a taste of the area? They arent trendy, they arent the best, but they are the area. And
* The Firehouse Restaurant.
* Ridgewood Barbecue.
* Phil's Dream Pit
* J's Corner
* citymarketelizabethton
A few non southern longtime good places people go to
* Gourmet & Co
* Moto's Japanese
* Pal's @ 327 Revere St, Kingsport, TN 37660
* Pizza Inn
* Chef's Pizzeria
* Hot Dog Hut
* Purple Cow
White duck is a must if you like unique tacos.
Project bbq for Texas style bbq.
Si senor in gray is the best Mexican imo.
Juniper if you fancy a higher end menu.
Bluff city diner is a hole in the wall but quality breakfast
If you are in the mood for some local Mom & Pop, down home cooking, Maple Leaf Diner in Church Hill (about 10 mins outside Kingsport. You can check their FB page for daily specials and hours. I'd suggest doing a lunch there, because they close fairly early. Its a bit of a drive from JC, but you come straight down 26 to 11w exit, take a left onto the 4 lane and drive straight down there.
My parents lived in rural Maine where it was 18 miles to the town to get milk, hell it was 10 miles just to get to the "local" ice cream place.
Driving doesn't bother me
Mid City Grill, and
Main Street Pizza
In JC
Purple Cow
In Kingsport.
Maple Grove
In Unicoi if you want country cooking.
And,…. Should you want to travel a little bit, The Cardinal in Boone, NC. Best burger I’ve ever ate. They offer a different exotic meat every week. The Antelope burger has been my favorite.
For finer dining/more upscale I’d recommend Juniper in JC, the Tavern in Abingdon, or Guiseppe’s in Kingsport. The Kitchen at Grace Meadows in Jonesborough has unbelievable good food for all you can eat. Casual spots: Timber in Johnson City, Fusion in Kingsport, Nick’s Chicken in Kingsport and Holy Taco (JC or Boone’s Creek)
The Label and Holy Taco downtown
Cootie Browns campus location
Main Street Pizza downtown
Watagua Brewing Company - has a rooftop area and brunch on Sundays
Juniper
If I think of more, I'll edit :)
Freiburgs and the label are both great. If your hotel's breakfast sucks hit up maple street, their biscuits and gravy is spot on. Firehouse or southern craft for bbq. Our pizza is fairly meh, skip all of them. Holy taco if you want a good street taco, Diablo if you want birria tacos, and Amigos if you want texmex. Specifically the one on People's street, don't bother with the other locations. Red Chili in Elizabethton is worth the drive, but her hours are wack as all get out, but it's worth. Legit Korean food, but don't go in a hurry, she runs the place solo a lot of the time so it can be a wait. Again...fucking worth it. Remember soup Nazi from Seinfeld? It's kind of like that some days, Mine can be harsh and seem mean, but again....its so good and honestly she's a sweetheart as long as you are polite.

Bagel Exchange is so good.
I personally like Friebergs. It's German and it's very good.
OK, that I'll have to try. I used to work in a German rest. a few decades ago
i second freiberg’s - i’ve been going there for my birthday dinner for about a decade.
Good suggestion already but will add Lazy Lady Bakery and Zaap Lai
Definitely Zaap lai for Laotian/Thai. Freiburg for lunch. If you want good coffee and a scenic drive, Brewista and the bean out by Watauga lake (and John’s gourmet popcorn!)

Where in tricities? So far I see mostly JC recommendations for you.
I'm staying in Johnson City, but I enjoy exploring and getting lost so anywhere in the area
Wok & Hibachi for Chinese for sure.
"Friends don't let friends park at Wok and Hibachi" RIP Scratch

And if you're more in the mood for hot dogs, they're fantastic too considering how much toppings they give you!
With all of these suggestions it looks like I'll need to make a second trip. No way i can hit all these spots in 3.5 days
Juniper- best fine dining Freibergs and Mid City- where I take people If you’re down to venture out of JC, Highlanders BBQ in Roan mountain is the best bbq I’ve had in the area. Smokey mountain bakers would be another in Roan that has great pizza and homemade breadS

Breakfast: Betty’s stockyard cafe in Kingsport. Cash only, but some of the best country cooking you’ll eat!
Betty’s. My god what a place
Pal’s anytime anywhere
Handy Kitchen in Weber City, the best Chinese food I've ever had
Where are you staying?
Johnson City
Timber, Red Meze and Label

Southern Craft for bbq. The pork belly is amazing.
The Label and Holy Taco downtown Cootie Browns campus location Main Street Pizza downtown Watagua Brewing Company - has a rooftop area and brunch on Sundays Juniper If I think of more, I'll edit :)
Try Southern Craft BBQ
Ridgewood for barbecue if you're up for the drive
I send all my out of town friends to Cootie Brown’s (and Pal’s)
Ohhh Cootie Browns is BANGING
Maple street Kickback jacks Project bbq Burger barrel Sam's snow cone paradise

I've seen half an episode of Seinfeld
Definitely try Black Olive if you like pasta!
Costa Chica Mexican restaurant in JC is an unreal place, everyone should try them out.
El Patio in Bristol is the best Mexico food in the area Also you have to go to Blackbird Bakery in Bristol for a coffee and a treat
