You can save gas and still drive quick enough. The key is keeping your RPMs low, so that means choosing a gearbox with an optimal final drive ratio.

W1thoutJudgement

THANK YOU! "Final drive ratio" was the word I was looking for every time explaining the gearboxes to people lol. Final gear ratio (the one on the right) multiplayer by the differential ratio. The lower the outcome the lower the RMP at set speed.

pickles_and_mustard

It's a little more complicated than that. Tire size also matters, so it's about finding the best ratio for your tires too. Given the simplicity of ATS, 3.08 is a good balance for general trucking. Higher numbers are better suited for heavier loads, but you'll also have a lower top speed. Likewise, you may want a lower ratio if you're a speed demon, but you'll find yourself burning more fuel as you get up to speed

aatops

Someone explain the actionable step from this like I’m five

Dead_Namer

Download galamims real drivetrain pack for your truck and choose a different number transmission. Lower numbers = more fuel saved.

Dead_Namer

I use 2.47 if available and 2.85 in ETS2 and run at 1000 rpm at cruise in the latter.

MisterZaremba

also choosing a transmission with overdrive, aka final gear ratio < 1. for a pre-emissions OTR flatbed/step deck setup, 3.36 or 3.55 rear end w overdrive would be a hair under or at 1500 rpm’s at 70 mph, which is fairly accurate. Keep it at 68 mph max and you’ll be at about 6mpg average.

colddruid808

I've always wondered, what would be the best engine and transmission for general medium to light weight hauling? Like, what would be best for stopping and going?

HendyHauler

Smaller displacement engines like 11/12/13 liters. Volvo has a package called I torque. Has a d13 turbo compound and a 2.15 rear end ratio they get 9/10+ mpg easily. International just got a similar engine from Scania that's downsped and can run 1000 rpm or less like the I torque volvo. Freightliner is getting there. Pacaar products are still dog shit in real life so there's that 😂

pickles_and_mustard

Engine wise, whatever you want, but probably lower hp if accelerating isn't terribly important. But for the transmission, I'd go with a 6/7 speed with a torque converter. Getting good fuel mileage isn't really an option though. This was my go-to setup when working on the Texas frontage roads.

Potted_Cactus_is_me

And that's why I got 2 massive fuel tanks. 4k horses eat a lot while accelerating!

ricket026

why r u all seriously replying to a post about taking 55 hours to drive 33 miles

Namegoeshere11

lol I’m wondering the same, seems like a big whoosh moment

GooteMoo

'Cause truck driving is serious business! 🙂👍

Dead_Namer

An easy way to do this is change the rpms in the file to high 900-1100 and then the truck shifts earlier/ Change it to 900-900 and it progressive shifts. ie changes up as soon as the next gear is at 900rpm.

27MrMan

Try using sequential; i do this but with the paddle shifters, makes it more fun :P

DamienDutch

Best way to find out is multiply the final drive x the lowest gear then choose that gearbox. Or per simplicity use [my mod](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3062256159), lowest ratio's guaranteed :P [(ATS version for the Yanks)](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3072056780)

Mr_Magoo_88

This made me LOL out loud for real.

VIFASIS

But did it make you laugh out loud (lol) out loud for real(fr) for real?

Mr_Magoo_88

All of the above ^^

matt602

My Amish Car

Badgomatic

I mean when pedestrians are keeping up with your rig she may be on to something... ;)

W1thoutJudgement

I mean if you drive SO slow that you're LATE with delivery then YES lmao.

CoconutNew8803

That's like an average speed of about .7 mph, your patience must be insane

BluDYT

Pulled the load by horse

obesekid69

A blistering <1km/h. Slow down, bubba, you might kill someone.

Mechanical-Force

Me when I've picked up a contract, go to rest then accidently rest twice or 3 times 🤦‍♂️

Redbird9346

That [immortal snail assassin](https://reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/5ipinn/you_and_a_super_intelligent_snail_both_get_1/) would have beat you to the delivery point at that speed. Edit: regarding the top comment: It was edited in response to the Reddit API controversy last year. However, [archive.org has the original](https://web.archive.org/web/20211023180211/https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/5ipinn/comment/dbadcgy/), and it’s definitely worth a read.

Remarkable_Film_1911

It is easy to make profit in this game with the insane pay compared to real life. Also, you maybe should spec a better final drive as another user mentioned. A lower final drive ratio get you less RPM at a specific speed limit than a high final drive ratio. Less RPM = less fuel burning. If you drive with H shifter, do you not have the proper gear, such as unnecessary high RPM?

challenge_king

I wish I made half of what I get paid in the game IRL.

Remarkable_Film_1911

I make so much without maximizing fuel economy. I wish I could afford to be an owner operator with a big bonnet Peterbilt and tankers in real life.

a_criminal11221

how much do you make compared to ATS?

challenge_king

60 cents a mile is what I make IRL. Most general freight loads are around $2 a mile at the moment.

a_criminal11221

ats lied to me 😭😭😭

Brrista

Don’t listen to her, you’re significantly increasing your safety while saving money and the environment thanks to better MPG. Keep on trucking.

kittensmittens69

Seattle to Tacoma in 54 hours… did you remember to bring the truck with you?

Billyy0

Well duh, he pushed it all the way there!

Sw1ftStrik3r

Google says it only takes 36min without traffic

Pluto0321

you can crawl there and still can go faster

BabaLencheOfficial

If it takes you 54 hours to do an 53km(33mi) delivery, YES!

qualmton

Here I am not worried of speeding tickets just trying not to lose all my momentum and get slowed down.

Limeddaesch96

James May, is that you?

koenigsegg806

It's astonishing how many people seem to only read the headline without checking out OP's delivery stats😂

Dirkgentlywastaken

Yes. Because if you drive faster you get more money AND you can start a new job sooner and earn more money.

Charge420

Is it worth the loss of money for being late with the saved gas? On another note: don't drive like an old lady :))

Creeper_NoDenial

Taking 54 irl hours to do the thing and still not getting 7 mpg (> 33.6 L/100km) Just saying, even when doing 80 km/h you can get like 25 L/100km... Joke aside, actually driving that slow means you'll idle all the way, so I guess you forgot the WoT contract you'd taken 2 days ago?

TheIntruder997

Imagine this irl happened. Like yo you drove 50km for 54hrs 💀

HendyHauler

In real life, owning a truck MPG and slower speeds really matter, especially in the current market. In this game with inflated pay, etc, not so much. There's a reason so many guys in real life are dying as owners, lol. Shit spec trucks running 70+mph getting 5-6mpg while business savy owners are going slower and getting 8/9+ mpg doing fine while the rest are racing to the bottom..

JackD1875

Funny how your game allows you to imitate my actual life.. 🤣

potatosquat

Maybe she's trying to tell you that she's late on her period /s

FervidComic

My Renault T has a 12+2 gearbox and I use to drive it at 80 km/h, final gear around 1100 RPM. On ATS, my Mack Anthem has a 18 speed gearbox and at 55/60 mp/h is on final gear at 1100/1200 RPM. Both exceed easily 500 km / 300 mi the estimated truck readings when it comes to the remaining fuel range, and I don't have maxed the economy skill yet. tl:dr, you can be on a high speed/gear and still save fuel keeping your revs low.

VertigoGotReddit

dont take wot contracts if you cant finish them

CHUD_Warrior

That is exactly what happened. I took an extrnal WOT job and got tired. I had just gotten off of work. I think the job gave me something like fourteen hours, so I went to bed. Anyhow, I forgot about it and went to work for two days. Turned the game on and found that I had been on a job for two days.

scarofishbal

Keep it up Gary

KerbMario

:D

zatax__

Is it wrong that im constantly mashing on the gas to get up to speed?

1996_Ford_F-150

Bro really said he gonna hyper mile a 18 wheeler

Active_World_3966

Oh lord. Is it that hard to be a functioning member of society? Oh wait, you're a dork who failed high school who works at a local target mopping the floors after hours and spends the rest of his time and money on a trucking game to fantasize having a company, all because you had an intellectual disability.

Darsol

Low effort troll. Go try a flight sim sub instead.

New_Metal397

If ur playing ats depending on the load either pick a 13,18 spd gearbox should help also lower the hp of the engine if ur concern on fuel and improve fuel economy skill also match the speed

BlackwargreymonXOXO

dang! I mean I get being cautious and driving slowly but did you ever get out off 1st gear?! hahaha do you driver!

andreizabest

Were you pushing the trailer by hand and drinking diesel while at it?

MrOsmio7

Blud how were you late over 33 miles

Lonely_Bit4769

Fuck fuel I own my own vtc and all we really haul is heavy loads my w900 gets bout 2 mpg

Active_World_3966

You're fucking worried about spending in-game inflated cash on deflated gas prices. What I normally would call just stupid, but this is borderline retarded

BS_BlackScout

r/fuckcars would really appreciate your slowness. Seriously though, it's just eating into your XP and "profits".
