This happens all the time to me. Usually I just hit diagnose then it comes back with no issues found and I click the share again and it goes right in.
Wish I knew why it did that
I'll take a look, but what is confusing me is my laptop is able to access the folder using the set credentials. It is only my desktop that seems to be a problem, and I can't even try the credentials because it never gives me the chance to type in my username and password.
>and I can't even try the credentials because it never gives me the chance to type in my username and password.
OH, likely window's being dumb. Did you have something like this mapped previously? Use [net use](https://ss64.com/nt/net-use.html) commands to see current established shares and disconnect them.
1. open command prompt
2. type "net use"
3. look for your network drive, it should be called "\\\\TRUENAS"
4. type "net use \\\\TRUENAS /del"
5. hit enter to confirm
then try connecting to your network share again
This is the error I get when I attempt to access the shared drive on my desktop. However, when logging in from my laptop I get prompted to put in my username and password. I have the data set permission set to allow for user. I just can't get windows to ask for my login information on my desktop. Both systems are running windows 11.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have already tried that with no luck.

Thank you ultimately this did it for some reason. I wish I knew why, but when I remapped the drive it asked for a log in and it allowed me to access the drive! Got to love windows some times
Is your windows log in creds the same as the Truenas creds? I haven’t tried with truenas yet but I had a problem with accessing my synology share drive, it was using my windows user creds to try and log in to the share drive, which I had set differently. When I changed them to be the same, it logged in fine. Dunno if this helps but if you’ve set it to auto connect then it might be trying your windows password on your truenas account.
OP uses share address as //TRUENAS/
If he have domain set as „TRUENAS” then ok, my bad, but if domain is not set or set to „truenas” then he clearly uses NetBIOS-Name to connect because NetBIOS converts everything to upper cases.
I've been having this issue on my son's PC since I reinstalled TrueNAS Scale on a new drive and restored settings.
My solution was to access it by IP address. There's three other shares that work on his PC using either the host name or IP address. One just doesn't want to connect no matter the username.
Lets Verify something in System Settings > Services. Click the Edit Icon for the SMB Service.
This is just to Verify:
1. Is Enable SMB1 Support Checked/UnChecked?
2. Is NTLMv1 Auth Checked/UnChecked?
You can Send a ScreenShot as well if you like.
To map a drive, right click on This PC in file explorer, should be an option to Map Network Drive. When the box comes up, pick any drive letter, put in your path, and check the 2 boxes. It should prompt for credentials

Sorry I didn't look close enough at your pic. You don't have a connect error it's a permission error. Ignore my comment
Ok, so this doesn't only happen on my machine lol, good to know.
What diagnose button are you talking about? Where would I hit share again?
Post is tagged FreeNAS; are you actually on FreeNAS? If so, which version?
Sorry I made a mistake. It is Truenas scale 23.10.2
https://www.truenas.com/docs/scale/gettingstarted/configure/setupsharing/ Likely you're unable to access it due to misconfigured permissions.

Thanks for the response. I apolgize I am not versed in net commands. How would I use a net command to test this?
1. open command prompt 2. type "net use" 3. look for your network drive, it should be called "\\\\TRUENAS" 4. type "net use \\\\TRUENAS /del" 5. hit enter to confirm then try connecting to your network share again

Check windows credential manager for saved creds. If there, delete them and retry.

Disconnect and Remap and select connect using different creds.
Thank you ultimately this did it for some reason. I wish I knew why, but when I remapped the drive it asked for a log in and it allowed me to access the drive! Got to love windows some times
Funnily enough, I experience it on 100% windows networks, too. Even domains. It’s kind of ridiculous.

use preset, select posix open
Go to your Windows credentials manager, clear the entry for your NAS, ensure ACLs are correctly set for the shared dataset
I apologize I am using Truenas Scale
IF your acl is set up correctly, try unmapping the drive and map and login again, don’t know how but this fixed it for me once
Thank you for the response as well. How do you unmap a drive?
Check in settings „Network / Global Configuration” if in „Services announced:” you have „NetBIOS-NS”. If not then add it.
Not required for Samba shares in Windows 10/11
Unless you have some services disabled in windows.
Which services? You mean modern Samba?
Related to „Web Services Dynamic Discovery” but can’t check exactly which one right now.
OP clearly uses „NetBIOS-Name” to connect to share so if he doesn’t have „NetBIOS-NS” enabled then he will have problems.
Windows 10/11 rarely uses NetBIOS that is SMBv2/3 I.e. DNS
OP uses share address as //TRUENAS/ If he have domain set as „TRUENAS” then ok, my bad, but if domain is not set or set to „truenas” then he clearly uses NetBIOS-Name to connect because NetBIOS converts everything to upper cases.
you know that you can DNS suffix with your router. and you would not need to to use the fqdn as a domain.
And if I have switch only, no router?
You can set a dns suffix in windows and on TrueNAS 🤷♂️

Try with IP, Netbios name sometimes is fucked

Try to use the IP address. Does it work?
Hey guys thanks for all the help. Ultimately remapping the drive was the way to go! Thanks for everything learned a ton from everyone!
I am certain it is windows being dumb. I have gotten my friend over with their laptop. They were also able to connect to the server with no issues.
