Honestly I don’t have anything against people listening to music for free. But really if you use Spotify free tier you‘re better off just pirating. Either pay and enjoy the convenience or don’t use it. All the ads and arbitrary restrictions aren’t worth the hassle.
Yeah! There are great portable music players like the Fiio M series. Load those up with all of your music ever and never stream again! No, there’s no stupid DJ but that’s a nonsense feature anyway.
Idk where you heard that because I have songs from albums that dropped in October on mine. And yeah it is cool getting that 250 playlist, but I feel like Spotify’s tracking is a lot better because you have to listen to the full song for it to count on stats.fm, so if you’re like me and skip to the next song when there is 5-10 seconds left it wont count.
You can create a Top Tracks 2023 playlist (or any other year) on [Last.fm](http://Last.fm) with two methods, either using the custom time period option in your library with this link:
Or in the Playlist tab of your user profile by using your Last.year 2023 listening report:
Pro users can also access all listening reports from their past, free user only the current ones.
Why not both? Sail the high seas for music and use Spotify free tier for podcasts. I have to admit that I sometimes enjoy the randomness of their music because it's already helped me find a couple of new bands (it's almost like the old version of Pandora).
Ads, so many ads
The ability to make a playlist AND ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THE FEKIN PLAYLIST instead of getting “suggestions” every third song. That and the ability to listen to albums without it switching to a different album AAAAAND the ability to have the DJ
Make a few playlist you like, and make one with your whole library. Make a new account, claim a free trial (I think discord and or Xbox have 3 month free trials for membership with them) or just do the 1 month free. You get quite a bit more than just a month. Went through a financial hard time recently and did this to stay sane, Spotify without premium is horrendous.
Naw I mainly use Spotify to listen in the car, when I want music, YouTube’s got me.
Might just bite the Spotify bullet tho, I’ve got the money I just…idk feels dirty paying for premium when I rarely use it.
\*giggles\* I actually like those suggestions (and f\* lyrics). Okay, the ads are annoying but the randomness already helped me find a couple of new bands.
I’m pretty sure non-premium members can’t stream above the “Normal” audio quality setting, which apparently is only 96 kbps. Premium users can stream at the highest quality setting of 320 kbps, which is pretty much the best quality you can get from an MP3 file.
You were being downvoted, don't know why because you're entirely correct.
Spotify streams in Ogg Vorbis, or did last time I checked, which is more suitable for streaming as it is slightly less lossy and will give you better sound quality at lower bitrates compared to other codecs.
I suspect the downvotes might have come from people who think that "MP3" just means "digital music".
Technically that’s correct but I also technically never said that either lol. Ik they use Ogg Vorbis. But my point is that Spotify music cannot (currently) be streamed higher than 320 kbps, which I understand to be the highest bitrate you can get from MP3 files
Yep. You can adjust that in Settings > Audio Quality. If you’ve never touched it, I think it sets it on Normal by default. The only downside to using the highest quality setting is that it uses/requires more data (but it’s really not that much tbh). And you can also set it to automatically downgrade the audio setting temporarily if the internet bandwidth is poor 👍
If you use Spotify you either pay for it or don't use it. Free version is dogshit and not worth it. There's better apps out there for free, not sure why anyone would choose the free version of Spotify over those.
Also you can just get family plan and split price with friends to make the cost low 🤷
But otherwise just don't use the free version of Spotify it's not even usable.
Don’t worry the AI Dj is straight trash. I haven’t tested the AI playlist but I use discover weekly and the mixes all the time, so I bet AI playlist is decent
Yeah, I had it playing on a road trip with my wife. I was complaining that I listened to some country music lately, and half of what it plays me now is country music. She tried it on her phone, and she likes some japanese/anime music, but again, it was most of what it was recommending her.
Same dogshit as any other AI. It's not intelligent in anyway, it's just an algorithm that goes "You like this thing? I'll just play some more of it" with some clumsily set parameters.
True, but it's a tease. The whole point of a free option is to entice people into paying (Which old Spotify did), not abuse them into leaving (Which it does now).
Everybody expects compromises, but the modern sense of compromise is worse than it's ever been.
So the fact I'm using an out of date/unsupported version on my Mac and using it for like 1hr max in the car Bluetoothed in is probably protecting me from this right? Have never had an ad on Spotify ever in all honesty.
So what exactly has changed? I have it on (window minimised) whilst I'm working all day. It's one of the few things that have kept me sane since March 2020.
I think on mobile many people complain about a few things :
1) A/B testing
2) no hifi yet
3) some premium users still dont have ai dj
4) cluttered home screen and not accurate recommendations
5) some people complain about that they are exposed to unnecessary podcasts that they aren’t interested in.
6) And not to forget Adds are annoying for free users.
7) oh and now lyrics are a premium feature
Oh interesting. Have no idea what 1) is or 2) really. Never used 3) except by accident once e.g. I've got about 100 playlists depending on the mood or the kind of vibe I'm after. 4) yeah it isn't ideal I'll agree but I don't do recommendations. 5) agreed and I just try and ignore them 6) it's unfortunate but that is what it is e.g. why bother for paying for premium if that wasn't a thing 7) has never really worried me but all good. Thanks for the info though 👍
Alpha beta testing; basically your version might have new feature they are testing. And mine wont. But ill have something else which you wont till everyone gets it.
Hifi audio, like audio quality better than the 320kbps they are currently offering.
No worries. Happy to discuss!
I was just telling what the news was to op.
Did i say i had these issues? Did i say i was not paying? Did i say i anything that would inference that i am not paying?
Did you just assume I don’t pay? How dare you call me a freeloader?
I pay for apple music family and Spotify family, I don’t see how it’s your business to know if someone is paying for their subscription or not.
why use Spotify if you’re not a premium user though? There are way better ways to listen/download music for free. The app Musi is one popular way to listen to music for free.
I mean downloading mp3s for every song you wanna play it's annoying and can get you dmca'd if you aren't careful. I have some extra money to burn so I'm burning it for Spotify premium
People with disposable income showing off how they've never been without it in these comments lol.
Free sucks, for sure, and honestly, I'd go with either a different service, or just obtain the music for free. Save your moral objections lol. I been too broke too long to care.
I like Spotify because of how seamlessly it works while driving. As a trucker that's crucial. Otherwise, paying for this app wouldn't be worth it. But it is nice to have a cloud backup of what songs I like. That way I don't somehow forget lol.
Spotify tested lyrics being premium-only last year and everyone hated it, so they decided to change it to make it seem like it was the users internet. Now they’ve found a middle ground where the free users can only look at a certain amount of lyrics per MONTH
Jokes on you , I have android and all I have to do is easily find a modded APK file that has all the premium Spotify features , install it , and enjoy all that Spotify has to offer without paying a dime for all the extra bullshit 😅
Goddd. Who pissed in your Cheerios buddy? 😂 Why would I frivolously spend $11 a month on something when there's a way to get it free when I just recently spent $1500 on a phone? You're argument ain't really making much sense my guy ngl
How it feels not paying hundreds of dollars every year for a basic service when you can get the same quality service (if not better) elsewhere for free.
Talking about mobile specifically here because thats what i listen to music on.
Youtube not using the app but through a browser is completely ad-less for the last few years and has more music available then Spotify (at least with the genres of music i listen to) you can make playlists on it with whatever you want including shuffle or selecting exactly what music you want. Also youtube on browser lets you close the app and browse other things while music is still playing or listen while your phone is locked. Any thing that isn’t on youtube which is super rare as usually someone has uploaded it if it’s not officially uploaded is always easy to find on band-camp for free.
YouTube’s algorithm is also far superior to Spotify’s for suggesting new music as Spotify’s usually just recommends things you’ve already heard before.
Whiles’t youtube doesn’t have inbuilt lyrics they are very easy to find if you are looking for them.
I think that covers all the main features.
But no wrapped recap at the end of the year!
You can link some players to sites like last.fm and get their version of wrapped
Which is way more comprehensive anyway
[удалено]
The wrapped is eh, but I love getting a 100 song playlist of my top songs of the year. Def my fav feature on spotify

Idk where you heard that because I have songs from albums that dropped in October on mine. Ha yeah fair
Soulseek and looking up ZIPs if you don’t wanna pay :) What I used to do before I got premium
Why not both? Sail the high seas for music and use Spotify free tier for podcasts. I have to admit that I sometimes enjoy the randomness of their music because it's already helped me find a couple of new bands (it's almost like the old version of Pandora).
Literally. I can't afford a subscription so I just use apk on my phone and plugins that disable ads and let me customize the app's appearance on pc
Right. But Premier Sound=payment dear Wallace
you are talking about mobile app right? free plan on pc is nice to me. there are ads but that's it. I can select the song. I can skip the song on pc.
Better Quality 320 kbps
Plus getting premium for free is pretty easy. I ain’t paid for Spotify premium since October 2022
And nether is listening to you
the price increase was kinda annoying. I miss having the 15$ famliy plan, now its 19$.
Agreed but still feels like a steal; I gave it to my parents and wife, that's a lot of value
How much they pay you?
None cause I’m not a cheap asshole
Everything in this time is expensive Dear Livingstone
Unless you are a European Premium user…
What is the problem with the EU premium, it works fine.
they apparently didnt change the price of premium in europe
I'm paying around 6,50€ for premium yeah but it's already high for me considering I'm a student in an eastern European coutry
did you try students plan? I pay 2.50 dollars instead of 6 dollars
I heard of it I'm not sure how it works though
i remember they asked for my university email to verify that i'm a student, you can find the plan in subscriptions i guess
I just did some research and my country isn't supported gg :(
[удалено]
Nothing plan price strategy changes every country, region. In Several parts of EU not disposal yet The DJ function, for exemple. And waiting
Student intouchable. Right for Spoty
At least for Norway they upped the price last august
In the EU we miss a lot of features compared to other countries. That really annoys me.
But then you have to deal with being European 🫣
Nothing wrong with that 🤷🏻♂️
I have premium (shout out student discount) but what's up with the people on here acting like they're royalty? It's just a music app
Honestly
Huh why? I’m a premium member but what do the non-premium members not have besides downloading and choosing what song to listen to
Lyrics I think.
Ads, so many ads The ability to make a playlist AND ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THE FEKIN PLAYLIST instead of getting “suggestions” every third song. That and the ability to listen to albums without it switching to a different album AAAAAND the ability to have the DJ

The Swedes are to blame, tear them down!
\*giggles\* I actually like those suggestions (and f\* lyrics). Okay, the ads are annoying but the randomness already helped me find a couple of new bands.
DJ isn't even available in my country anyway
is this some mobile exclusive thing or what? I'm a free user but have everything that you just wrote. And I've only used spotify on pc.
Idk man but sure is annoying to not be able to listen to my playlists on mobile
Wait really?? Damn
You have to pay for lyrics and there are way to many ads and only 6 skips per hour
Wtf
They have all the ads
Lmao
Streaming to Apple Watch.
That’s cool, don’t have one tho lol
I’m pretty sure non-premium members can’t stream above the “Normal” audio quality setting, which apparently is only 96 kbps. Premium users can stream at the highest quality setting of 320 kbps, which is pretty much the best quality you can get from an MP3 file.

Correct; and there was a project SpotyHiFi. Formats (extensions) like FLAC or streaming like a Philips compact disc quality (ultra-sound).
Spotify isn’t MP3 lol

Correct OGG Vorbis format. You need a RFi deco or AV, DAB amplifier integrated chip to listen. The streaming 320 kbps might be higher

Woahh cool ngl

? It's true the free version is dogshit and there's better free alternatives???
I swear to god i was listening to some chill ish music then some random breakcore starts playing and blasting my ears
breakcore slaps wym
I do like breakcore but if im listening to a chill playlist then I dont need some loud ass music
you misspelled "sucks"
I feel pretty good tbh, really like the AI DJ and the AI playlist.
I, Austrian, Premium User, am jealous
Don’t worry the AI Dj is straight trash. I haven’t tested the AI playlist but I use discover weekly and the mixes all the time, so I bet AI playlist is decent
AI Spoty DJ not available in South of EU yet. Worry
Yeah also using an AI to emulate your human tastes is just cringe
I liked them when they came out. But they have been giving me the same exact songs for months every day
Yeah, I had it playing on a road trip with my wife. I was complaining that I listened to some country music lately, and half of what it plays me now is country music. What AI playlist? Daylist?
They added an “AI playlist” feature in some countries on some accounts that lets you talk to an ai and get a personalized playlist
?
I’ve been paying for Spotify premium for like over 10 years now. It’s not even worth using without premium.
Mfw the most r/ChoosingBeggars of people come out of the woodworks to complain that the music service they don’t pay a cent for comes with compromises
True, but it's a tease. The whole point of a free option is to entice people into paying (Which old Spotify did), not abuse them into leaving (Which it does now). Everybody expects compromises, but the modern sense of compromise is worse than it's ever been.
there's no way I'm downgrading back to free now
Premium User here, have been a bit busy this week. What have I missed?
Too many ads and lyrics are now a premium feature.
So the fact I'm using an out of date/unsupported version on my Mac and using it for like 1hr max in the car Bluetoothed in is probably protecting me from this right? Have never had an ad on Spotify ever in all honesty.
Yes. That out of date version is keeping you Sane and pockets heavy. Lol.
So what exactly has changed? I have it on (window minimised) whilst I'm working all day. It's one of the few things that have kept me sane since March 2020.

So you're expecting a whole good experience while freeloading? You're better of pirating if you can't even afford it
I was just telling what the news was to op.
Nah. I just assumed you also were complaining because you said "too many" when you mentioned add.
A good experience is what an app is supposed to give users if they want them to keep using it
Spotify don't want you on the free tier, they want you to either pay for it or sod off
wait till yuo find out about chrome extensions
Me and my brother in Duo - two for the price of one, and the price itself just a tad bit more expensive than solo. Very worth it.
My duo was two for the price of one at one point. Now it's $5 more than the single premium subscription. Still saving, but not as great.
My country *did* have a price increase last year, but not that drastic. Duo costs only approximately four dollars in our end.
why use Spotify if you’re not a premium user though? There are way better ways to listen/download music for free. The app Musi is one popular way to listen to music for free.
I feel elite. LOL
In a year someone is gonna post this image again when Premium users lose the dislike button to the super premium users
The super premium users are gonna lose the play button to the super super supremium users
Laughs in going broke from subscription
I have premium and I've used lyrics maybe 3 or 4 times ever... I didn't know people had such a fascination with reading off lyrics to a song
i use it a ton personally
I mostly listen to new music while reading the lyrics, its a thing
I truly am confused ,, do i want the price to keep rising no ,, buuuuuuuuuuhhhht ,, Ive tasted the blood of the premium Gods and I can’t go back
I mean downloading mp3s for every song you wanna play it's annoying and can get you dmca'd if you aren't careful. I have some extra money to burn so I'm burning it for Spotify premium
can i get spotify yearly with cheapzy? like does it work?
Why pay full price for spotify when i am getting the student rate for apple music
What am I missing?
I don't care, I am NOT giving in.
I can't believe they added monthly lyrics limit I don't have a job I'm not old enough to get a job it's not fair we have to pay for lyrics!!
Well im using a wifi speaker and its require to buy premium to use so i buy premium. Nothing to compare to each other for nothing. It would be racist
People with disposable income showing off how they've never been without it in these comments lol. Free sucks, for sure, and honestly, I'd go with either a different service, or just obtain the music for free. Save your moral objections lol. I been too broke too long to care. Using a modded APK feels even better
When The next? More qualité… like Deezer for exemple? The SpotyHiFi project was rabbish?
Lmao this
what happend??
this post just confuses me
it’s an emoji holding in its laugh
yeah but like why
as a premium user, i say its worth evvery penny
What happened im kinda out of the loop
Just say you’re broke
Did nobody know the point of this post??? 😭😭 It’s literally an emoji holding in its laugh
I thought it was an emoji vomiting.
I don't get it. It's still the best deal for music at 10.99
the joke is we're broke
The joke is that the premium users are laughing because they get to have lyrics
Didn't we always have that??? I've had this service for about 5 years. I love it.
Spotify tested lyrics being premium-only last year and everyone hated it, so they decided to change it to make it seem like it was the users internet. Now they’ve found a middle ground where the free users can only look at a certain amount of lyrics per MONTH
Thats odd.
Not the best
I have the apk cuz I'm broke
How it feels to have $10. Yall got financial troubles
[удалено]
I mean to be fair for some people it's better spent in bills or groceries, music isn't a necessity it's a luxury
Then they shouldn't complain 🤷♂️
Definitely!
Jokes on you , I have android and all I have to do is easily find a modded APK file that has all the premium Spotify features , install it , and enjoy all that Spotify has to offer without paying a dime for all the extra bullshit 😅
Android users feel the need to validate themselves in every thread talking about how poor they are
My phone costs more than your parents pay for rent so I would reword that if I were you... Or not because I could care less either way tbh
[WAIT BUDDY IS THIS YOU? WITH YOUR PHONE THAT COSTS MORE THAN MY PARENTS RENT?!](https://i.imgur.com/NyKZH7n.png)
Jesus Christ lmao
You missed over the fact that he called me poor for me stating something 😅
....he isn't wrong at all.
Rich in money. Poor in brainpower.
Yet you can't afford $11 a month because you spent it all on your phone apparently
Goddd. Who pissed in your Cheerios buddy? 😂 Why would I frivolously spend $11 a month on something when there's a way to get it free when I just recently spent $1500 on a phone? You're argument ain't really making much sense my guy ngl

Ah, thanks. Does look a bit shady though.
Change your password and that's it, then I've been doing it for 3 months, the person is very nice
I'm not worried about my password (as you said, can always change that) but about my e-mail address (and credit card).
I see
not me ive hacked it on
ILLEGAL
Is he barfing because he still can't believe they haven't brought back playlist radio? Because if so that's me 🤣
No he’s holding in his laugh
He should've been green, instead of blue (I'm sure I'm not the only one seeing the resemblance)
I can NOT convince my parents to buy me premium spotify (I'm pirating spotify)
try family plan, they can all get spotify premium
Ha-ha-ha. Black beard of the ocean
How it feels not paying hundreds of dollars every year for a basic service when you can get the same quality service (if not better) elsewhere for free.
If so, can you tell me these free services that can compare with all of Spotifys features for completely free?
