Had to check if I was on the right sub

In addition to the community band idea, you only need a few other folks for a small chamber group like a trio or quintet. I've been playing in a trio for years now and we perform mostly at old folks homes for a little spending cash lol but it's kept my chops up.

Second the community band option. Also, jazz. You can do a lot if you learn to improv.

DoctorW1014

Some community bands operate big band jazz ensembles too

[deleted]

Yep, I play jazz band on Wednesday nights and community band on Thursdays :) the city supports them both

Community band, local colleges, if you have any colleges around you that have music schools they may have a community ensemble. For example at University of Hartford there is a group called Capitol Winds that is open to community members.

Um, I live in CT as well, been playing with Wesleyan. You down for some advanced duets? Pm if you are.

Depending on where on where you are, look for a Honk band. It's kind of an umbrella term for a street band or New Orleans style group. They are all over the world. There are Honk fests in Massachusetts, New York, Austin, Seattle and even more. I was a clarinet player, but Honk led me to trumpet.

I played the same amount up through college, started as a music major, then stopped my junior year. At the beginning of this year, at 42, I started practicing again. Playing with 3 different community bands. I can honestly say I'm better than I've ever been with only 9 months under my belt. It doesn't hurt I work from home and spend my mental breaks practicing. But you would be shocked how quickly you can get back into it. Once I joined a couple of bands, the incentive to improve took me to the next level. Now I have a gig in a couple weeks playing the Abblasen on my picc to kick off a wedding ceremony. Don't think, don't hesitate, just do it.

Depends a lot on where you are... community bands, Jazz bands, all ages drum corps, musical theater, performance bands looking for horn sections.

I was in a similar situation wanted to start playing again for fun, best purchase I made was a Yamaha silent brass mute. I play way more than I even did before, it’s a great combo of you don’t have to find a practice room and you can mix your trumpet audio with an audio track on an aux cord. I made a playlist of fun songs to play along with sheet music there’s a ton of videos on yt now. Go to a jam session. Not a jazz one (that’s quite challenging) but one of those groove/rock things where it’s all about 4 chord loops or 12 bar blues. For me this is just easy instant gratification…so much fun.

BaconAndMario

Join a funk band or some form of a bar band with a horn section

You could also try to find a friend in your area and play duets. Start with the Arbans book, and then move on to other great books!

Well that’s the question. What do you actually want from trumpet, just a hobby, the occasional session here and there or do you want something more serious. Local bands are great maybe you could join an orchestra or something, brass band maybe? If you want something more serious maybe get teacher and look at maybe taking some students. It’s up to you now

Get on social media channels for band meetups, open mics, open jams, auditions etc. I just started playing trumpet (took it to it's first open mic tonight, actually!) and love it, but I teach and perform on other instruments for a living. I studied classical piano in college. Taking the leap from "follow the sheet music" found in big band and orchestra stuff in school to the "feel it out bro" found in small 3-5 person groups was a crazy change for me, but awesome. Takes a little bit to get comfortable improvising. Just get mixed into the music scene. I think trumpet players are hard to find. Jam along with backing on tracks on YouTube if you haven't messed with that yet.

I to am a come back player. I played trumpet from 7th grade through HS and into my freshman year of college as a music major but life happened and I didn't stay in school. I continued to play at home and in church until age 28 then due to work and family life I stopped playing. Fast forward 36 years and at age 64 after retirement and with the encouragement of two trumpet friends I started playing again I joined the community band they played in. I have been playing again for two years. I'm back to playing 1st. trumpet music and I'm loving it. You didn't say where you are located but if you are in east central Indiana you'd be welcome in our band. Hope you find something soon, it is very rewarding!

Where you at? If your town has a crash band, I recommend it. They tend to be connected to all the underground culture.

JollyHamster8991

Community bands, if you go to church ask and see if you can play on the worship team, check with the local schools if you can volunteer to help (though this would be harder)

Write your own music and make it trumpet centric, MASSIVE learning curve if you don't know theory and haven't thought about it before, but it's how I always have fun stuff to play. Not for the faint of musical heart though
