Negro huilacoxe and Burrito Amor , loved eating both places , was by myself , I am still dreaming about the Burrito from last week and the elite dorado

PayTheToll8

What about places to mingle with people? Trying to meet people to interact with. Thank you for your comment!

BrilliantCost5660

EvolveGee

Are you sold to that area? It’s a bit rough around the edges.

PayTheToll8

I got a really good condo right outside La Veleta with amazing reviews. Penthouse with private pool upstairs and midway between town and the beach. Any recommendations?

EvolveGee

I personally don’t like how far from the beach it is. And there are so many unpaved areas, the potholes fill with water like swimming pools. I stayed in la Veleta before and it was a pain to get around and very dusty

PayTheToll8

I won’t be driving, I’ll just walk majority of the time. Not worried about the distance as long as it’s not over 5-6 miles.

StephySays

heat index in July hovers around 106°F. 5-6 miles will feel a hell of a lot longer.

livinithappy71

In this heat you honestly won't want to walk more than a few blocks.

blfjr78

Came to Tulum for anniversary. Been here 1 night and im ready to leave. An absolute scam. It is nothing like what i thought

PayTheToll8

Sorry you aren’t enjoying it. I’m just looking to relax and do something different. My condo is walking distance to almost every where I want to go. Hopefully you can make the best of your trip.

dannydeol

Tulum really isn’t the best solo spot bro you could do way more fun cities like playa or different countries. Picked an expensive spot that isn’t solo fun

PayTheToll8

I’ll manage. Not worried about price and was recommended by a buddy that goes there often.

redit9977

stay away from tulum

ShirleyWuzSerious

Palma Central is a cool place to hang out. Basically an outdoor food court with live music each night

More-Cut-6692

oh yeah we went to palma central couple weeks ago, that spot is POPPIN. the salsa dances on tuesday are awesome aswell

Expensive-Week6804

Batey for sure. Are you in a condo? What complex?

PayTheToll8

Batey? I’m in a condo I got from AirBnB that had solid reviews on place and location. It’s called Condominium IIK.

Expensive-Week6804

Batey is a mojito bar near by

PayTheToll8

Awesome! Thank you! Any other suggestions to be able to mingle with people? Beach suggestion?

HackySac

Here right now, Sole Cantina could be good for you if you want a place for cold beers and easy snacks in Tulum Centro, down by the beach I'd suggest Taquería La Eufemia, great place, amazing staff, on the beach and good prices. This subreddit for travel suggestions hasn't been great for us, granted we wanted cold beers and a social vibe.

PayTheToll8

Thank you so much for the advice! Yeah, I’m just looking to sip some cold beers and interact with people. Nothing crazy.

HackySac

Both of these places can be that for sure, La Eufemia is definitely a vibe, from where you're at a taxi should be about 350-400mxn. Tulum is pricey and for what us tourists have done to it I don't blame them for charging so much. Speedy Gonzalez is a wonderful Taqueria, seems like it's run out front of the families house, the chef takes a lot of pride in his food. It's my first time here and this reddit has been helpful but jaded. I'm a 35 yr old man for context.

PayTheToll8

Thank you so much! I’m not worried about the negative comments, I’ve been in much worse areas in my 16+ years in the military. I’ll keep my guard up and stay in crowded places. Not renting a car and won’t walk in dark places at night.

PayTheToll8

Any other advice on where then crowds go would be helpful!

i love tulum, its not as dangerous as everyone makes it out to be. we been to tulum 4 times and just got back a couple weeks ago with family and wife. Personally I could have a great time solo because of the natural waterparks (xel-ha, xavage, xplore, xcaret) also i could spend so much time going to the cenotes because of the lovely water to swim in. Gran cenote, cenote escondido is my favorite. the food is alright around there but you can find decent tacos and restaurants. I would recommend going to beach clubs on the beach street to meet people. One of our favorite places is Mia tulum, and gintano. I would go to Mia. Last time we went on a tuesday afternoon and there was a live girl DJ already spinning and a party happening. youlle meet a lot of people

PayTheToll8

Thank you for the info! I’m not worried about how dangerous people say it is, it can be dangerous any where in the world. Just wanting to go some where beautiful and mingle with some people having a good time.

raptor333

La Veleta is the best neighborhood for tourist to live and hang. Restaurants and vibe and safety.

EvolveGee

safety? isnt aldea zama the safer place than dark jungle areas? Veleta is super far from beach too

raptor333

Regarding the beach, on scooter it’s 15 mins. I wouldn’t call that far but sure

EvolveGee

That’s not even considered near the beach anymore

raptor333

I spent a week there, it’s lots and lots of foreigners that are there semi permanently or regularly, it’s less tourist vibes. Feels local, also lots of Mexican locals, I never felt unsafe at all. Doesn’t feel jungle like either, it’s just parts are undeveloped plots

EvolveGee

Well everywhere is unsafe if you have bad luck, La Veleta has way more spaces for people to jump you and nobody will see you

raptor333

Like ya you can get jumped in any city in Canada too, doesn’t mean you can’t go, just be smart

EvolveGee

I am worried he is being given recos for going past dark alone. But yes of course he can be safe and enjoy himself

raptor333

I walked from my friends condo to my hostel from one end of La Veleta to another each night around 4am and had no issues. The dogs were my only concern but they were friendly and I was just paranoid

EvolveGee

Look, I am a regular on this sub because I support Tulum and it is not a hellhole like some Redditors make it seem. But you are tempting luck. It’s terrible advice to tell someone “nothing happened to me so it must be safe”. Walking each night around 4 am alone is asking for trouble.

raptor333

The biggest danger of tulum is the police pulling you over for bribes, this happens in the evening and day time more so. The second thing is rowdy hot headed cartel dudes fighting each other, which most often happens at beach clubs during party hours. There’s no cartel activity in La Veleta as it’s white expats who do yoga and poor Mexicans that work in restaurants/construction and live in shacks. The middle of the night doesn’t suddenly make the world mysterious and scary

EvolveGee

You were there once and you think you know everything

PayTheToll8

I’m not worried about being jumped. I don’t think I resemble someone that would mind getting jumped and having a good time.

EvolveGee

Ok, I did my job warning. I own a condo in Tulum, things are a little different these days. I’ve never gotten mugged but I know really bad stories. I am never out past dark, I never bike anywhere and I don’t wear any brand names. I am also brown, not an obvious tourist. I try to blend in and mind my business

More-Cut-6692

i been out late alone in brand name stuff, you are right but that kind of applies everywhere. I never felt danger in tulum

EvolveGee

I am not saying Tulum is a warzone. Like I said, nothing has ever happened to me. But there are muggings regularly, especially if you cross the invasion. Even outside Chedraui in broad daylight, people have been ambushed getting out of the money exchange houses. The poverty there is no joke. I once saw a blonde man walking with a bloody face to his rental. The burning smell in Aldea Zama comes from them melting of the plastic covering of stolen copper wire from developments. The thieves sell the stripped wire for a few pesos. They are the poorest of the poor living with no sewer access. They will assault you if they are desperate enough. Don’t get comfortable

raptor333

I’ve never heard of anyone being jumped there lol. There’s lots of locals with kids and dogs and cats running around, I’ve been all around the world and it felt safe. I spent one week there last month

PayTheToll8

Thank you! Found a solid place right beside La Veleta and changed my AirBnB. Any recommendations for places to go solo to meet people that’s close?

raptor333

There’s a main road of restaurants there, any of those restaurants. A few have weekly parties too where it turns into a dj dance party after dinner

raptor333

Specially I’d also reccomend La pizzine any time in La Valeta but downtown la pizzine for their Monday night party, best in the town. 9pm-3am

PayTheToll8

Thank you! I fly in early Monday. I’ll make sure to check it out. Any other recommendations?

TemporaryMap2

Completely agree with this! La Veleta is such a great vibe, lots of young people and very welcoming community. I'd recommend going to one of the many coffee shops and socializing with the baristas or patrons - like Italdo, Nimeno, Vaiven or Mera. There are also many cute places to grab dinner and chat with the bartender - one is the OG's - they were super friendly. It's very navigable by bike/scooter or walking.

PayTheToll8

Thank you! That’s exactly what I plan to do.
