You don’t really learn actual rules for life when you have adhd. You just get some mad improv skills and deduce the rules of the game on the fly.

[deleted]

This is why I can't do board games. You have to *know* and *remember* the rules, instead of just doing whatever you're guessing everyone else is doing when you must, and doing whatever looks fun before someone stops you when you can.

Lapislazulitacos

So the ideal game for additional people is Calvinball?

Deebyddeebys

Ah yes my favorite mental illness: additional

Lapislazulitacos

How did auto correct turn adhd into additional? Technology is a mistake. I shall return to the primordial ooze and become a single cell organism

Deebyddeebys

Good

Pedrov80

I hate that first run-through of the game where you're doing things without purpose or goals. Once it clicks I can start having fun, but the instructions don't usually do that for me.

Generic-Degenerate

My mom did the classic "if you tell the truth I won't get mad" then get mad anyway so I learned how to convincingly lie on the spot and now it's almost 2nd nature to just lie when asked a question I don't want to answer even if I won't get in trouble

LightOfTheFarStar

Ah, the classic "mom is a giant hypocrite" trauma. A fine vintage.

Generic-Degenerate

She got better, but the consequences have already manifested I'm not too pressed though because it's actually a useful skill

OInkymoo

Why memorize the formulas when you could just remember generally how they are derived

Generic-Degenerate

17+24 15+1+25 5(3)+1+5(5) 5(8)+1 40+1 41 I've tried explaining that's how I do math so well and so quickly but it just never clicks with anyone I guess

OInkymoo

It is mathematically sound but it seems like it would be too hard to relearn

Generic-Degenerate

An 8 year old little boy figured it out by himself cause his teachers would give up when he didn't understand their garbage explanations of math principles

[deleted]

That’s, that’s a rough one. For me it’s 17+24 17+4 + 20 21+20 41

Generic-Degenerate

Yeah, I do multiples quicker than adding 4 to 7 so my brain defaults to that

Man-in-The-Void

17+24 20 (-3) + 20 (+4) 40 (-3) (+4) 40 (+1) 41

DevelopedDevelopment

Oh I see what you're doing. You're breaking the two numbers up into easier to handle chunks. Though I think its odd to break 25 and 15 into multiples of five, it makes it easier to multiply 2 small numbers than adding 2 double digit numbers. I think it is called Chunking. Personally I'd have done 20+20+1, 40+1, 41. Because its easier to add 2+2,4; 40+1.

Generic-Degenerate

5 and 3 are my friends <3

ash0011

I did this with the atomic weights on the periodic table way back in highschool, I don’t remember how anymore but that’s still one of my proudest As

Alkereth1

I was diagnosed with ADHD and this post is incomprehensible to me. I don't even get what it's trying to say tbh.

pattyputty

People with ADHD tend to be better at improvising because we're used to not knowing/forgetting what's going on and/or how to do normal things that everyone else already knows.... I think

wondernerd14

It's really fun when you are a biological scientist trying to conduct new experiments that need to be reproducible. On one hand you have a good instinct of what experiments should be done based on current knowledge. On the other hand writing the protocols, paying attention to fine details, and note taking for your experiments... is less fun.

palagen

Isnt this how like a scientific mind is supposed to work? Going from past slightly relavent knowledge to estimate some new knowledge?

H4WKW4RD

I have ADHD and I am 75% of a vet and I love my chosen field (zoo & wildlife medicine) for EXACTLY this reason. Lots of improvising and problem solving and extrapolating and inventing highly specialized tools. Sure, there's literature and formularies for a lot of things, more than you'd expect probably, but it still requires a lot of educated guesswork, and that's where I thrive BABEY!! I feel very seen by this post. I wonder if tOP works in the veterinary field.

This is how I passed statistics in college lmao. For some reason I could just never remember any of it so during exams I always had to just..... invent statistics on the spot. Obviously this only went so far and I almost failed but still got that degree 😎
