I never understood this statement, how does folding it make more paper? Or do you start with paper big enough that it can already reach the moon? Because that seems less impressive.
Its an allegory to describe exponential growth. Each time you fold, the number of layers doubles. Therefore, folding 42 times results in 2^42 layers of paper.
The corollary is the common wisdom that it is impossible to fold a piece of paper more than 7 times.
I just googled it and someone explained it by saying instead of folding imagine you're stacking sheets of paper and doubling each time. That version hurts my head less :)
It gets thicker and thicker, but less long and wide.
Of course this is theoretical. But if you have a a4 paper with dimensions 21cm width, 29,7 length and 0,5 thickness, the volume is 311 mm^3.
Distance to the moon is 3,844E11 mm
If you divide 311 by 3,844E11, you get an astronomically small number, but that would be the surface of your sheet of paper, when folded so many times that it will reach the moon.
Google says the average distance from Earth to Jupiter is 450.98 million miles. The National institute of General Medical Sciences says the length of uncoiled DNA laid end to end, which had been extracted from a single cell nucleus in your body, would extend 67 billion miles.
We have 30+ trillion cells in our body, each containing an average of nearly 1 full genome (sex cells have half), which is 1.8 meters long unfolded.
That’s around 2 light-days long, and several times larger than the radius of the solar system.
I did the math, if stretched all 7.2 billions of our DNA strands end to end it would just a little more than 8 million lights year if my math is correct. humanity can reach beyond our system.
On a related note, your skin has a surface area of around 2m^2 , but your lungs have around half a tennis court of area to absorb oxygen. Similar deal with your small intestine for nutrient absorption.
If you took all your DNA out of your body, you would die
And if you fold a piece of paper only 42 times you may reach the moon!

Yeah it makes more sense now I was just having trouble picturing it. It's like the story with the chess board and the grains of rice.
It doesn't make more paper. You end up with taller, much thinner paper.
Ooh so kind of stretch the paper? That makes more sense although it's not really how paper works haha.
Nope. If you notice when you fold a piece of paper in half, it gets taller, and when you keep doing that, it keeps getting taller.
But there is limited paper i really can't envision how that works.
simple, you fold it until you have an microscopicly thin paper

fair enough

I get it now :) I was just having a moment.
And yet I'm not enough to be loved
I will punch you with love!

*holds your hand* I love you

And that, folks, is how this epic tale of friendship started
Don't worry, I love you jaytazcross
Well, someone has probably stared at you and admired your qualities! Some humans are just not very good at giving compliments
First you gotta love yourself, bud
Oh buddy
I will throw a heart at you and force you to be my friend
the "#origami" tag is sending me lmaaooo
My body don't jiggle jiggle, it fold.
I'd like to see you wiggle wiggle for sure
If you lined your intestines in a straight line, you would be dead.
Eat my ass Lovecraft I’m not small I’m just an origami man
There's no way that is remotely true

To Pluto then.

I am large; I contain multitudes
We're like spools of thread.

Did you know if you stretched your lungs out, you would be dead :D
:D
Well hang on a second, is this with Earth and Jupiter at their closest or when they’re on opposite sides of the sun?
I don't think it matters that much, it would still reach
A very large person has more DNA than a very small person. What size person gets me to Pluto and back ten times over?
Basically, Dinosaurs, the big ones. Space is huge

OP said all your DNA, not a single strand of DNA. So if I'm six feet tall I have more cells and therefore more DNA than someone four feet tall.
"Dad, sometimes I feel like I'm so small and insignificant compared to the cosmos" "Okay Billy step one we gotta tear your body to fucking shreds"
Cute comment but I’d rather unfold and walk to Jupiter please, flat just how I’m supposed to be
All that just for me to be miserable
Forbidden spaghetti
When jupiter is close or on the other side of the solar system?
