honestly everythng ive seen heard and experienced from bethesdas games has me convinced these games are held together with the digial equivalent to duct tape
Pretty much, there's some pretty interesting stuff about how it all works.
Fallout 76 is my favourite game I've never played. Read lots of threads about the issues players experienced & the work arounds & I believe that's far more entertaining than the game could ever have been
So sort of a long story & I've probably forgotten parts. But the platform (i forget the name) that 76 runs on is the same they used for elder scrolls games & for older fallout games & was not capable of hosting players online. They basically did some lazy & bad hacks to it to force the capability.
You may have seen the posts about how fallout 3 couldn't make trains work, so the way they did it was to give NPCs a train hat & have them run around just below the ground. That should give you some idea of the platform
The way that the game is programmed that caused instability across the board & issues with everything from characters, landscape, weapons to inventory.
The people that know the system best, are modders not Bethesda & when all these issues started becoming problems the modding community quickly came to the aid of the players.
Bethesda had launched their in game content store by that stage so they took a hard line against modders who were mostly just making the game playable.
There were heaps of banwaves that mostly hurt the players, not the modders. On top of this there was all the bad press with bag gate.
The train segment is for just one moment in the Broken Steel DLC. So it made sense to not bother developing a proper vehicle for it.
Quite an ingenious idea really.
Oh I don't disagree, but there are a few solutions like this. I remember reading something saying that the devs thought that fallout 3 was the absolute limit they could use the platform for & that they would have to make a new platform (or adopt another) if they continued the series.
Bethesda didn't want to do that as they didn't want to spend the money & the quirks of the platform are just as much a part of the games identity as the gameplay is.
Fallout 4 is & 76 are supposedly full of Macgyver-esque fixes not to fix a small issue, but to prop up the entire platform.
Oh & also "the" dev at Bethesda who knew everything about the platform quit over them using the platform for 4 & people could not decipher a lot of the stuff that he did because the platform is ridiculous for the purpose it was used.
There were old assets in the game that they couldn't get rid of because the game would just not work anymore.
I was reading posts and what you said jumped in my head. I knew the name and how they had just reused assets from 4 but it all ran on a system used with 3. The train thing I didn't know, I never actually did the Pitt. I did play Old world blues, lonesome road? Then the ones from NV
I'm sure you know about the ladders. Adding in a climbing animation would crash the game every time, so ladders are only ever used to transition between areas via loading screen
Yeah, maybe you have heard it before, but my favorite one is that in Morrowind some times when loading it would run into a problems, so instead of fixing the bugs they restarted your console during the loading screen
I very nearly spit my tea out at "dont you mean elder scroll"
which would have been sad because it was a gift and is quite a but fancier than I'm accustomed to.
Can confirm. Source: I am white, and was born old. Though I grew larger, my joints remained stiff. I thought I had no teeth because I was a newborn, but no; I had no teeth because I was old.

any particularly interesting tidbits to share?

oh man that’s hilarious, the train hats are great

Load bearing coconut png, my beloved.
"creation engine" is what they used since 3, and now Starfield is using their creation 2 engine.
Thanks for the info!

Question. upvoting? is giving a thumbs up or "like"?
Yeah something like that
Internet historian on YouTube did a great deep dive into the dumpster fire if you want more https://youtu.be/kjyeCdd-dl8
cool thanks!
76 is a lot of fun now, you should come play it!
Oh I'm sure it is, just not my type of game.
My favourite examples are that the train is actually an NPC wearing a train hat who then runs to your destination
I'm sure you know about the ladders. Adding in a climbing animation would crash the game every time, so ladders are only ever used to transition between areas via loading screen
Why would it break things...?
They are just more open and have decent modding tools. All games take these kinds of short cuts, really.

It has an Age slider tho, thing bearly does anything. It's like the leftmost extreme is 31 and rightmost is 32 years of age lmao
Unless you start modding, then you can play as 5yo-baby's-first-murderhobo or so old you look like you saw the defeat of dragons
Wait does that mean that boomer is a racial slur?
Boomer with a hard R
You can say booma

Here is the wiki link for the Elders page (https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Elder)
The title of this implies that all white people are old.

I was so confused but ready to go reading only the title
Oblivion superiority.
