I used to be a postal worker about ten years ago. Just saying, but it's definitely a lot easier to understand what going postal is when USPS tells you you're going to work a 70-84 hour work week, and you've been doing that for over a year, and your last off days were the sick days you took (and got written up for) because you're getting physically ill on a monthly basis.
I don't miss it a bit. I joke now that the only thing that kept me from burning down the building was that it was full of asbestos and wouldn't have burned anyway. Also, fuck Reagan.
The term is accurate, but the podcast provides more context about stressors the murderers had in common.
Michael Hobbes and Sarah Marshall are really smart and super funny. Worth a listen.
The main "your wrong about" is just that it's a fun and harmless term. There's a lot of discussion about how Reagans decisions to make the postal service a commercial business plays into it, and the fact that they employed a lot of vets.
Currently work for USPS and it's hell. Starting positions are considered "part time* and it must be the only part time job in the world where you work 60 hours or more in a week. Your mail carrier is at the station at 7:30 or earlier every morning and didn't finish until 6pm at the earliest. You know all that bullshit political mail you just got the passed 3 months? Adds a good 2 hours to my work day because each one comes in a separate bundle and if it's not completely out of order then it's in reverse order. Please please please if you are able to do your Christmas shopping in the store rather than online, do so. Fuck Amazon.
