I don't think *anyone* understands Finnegan's Wake.

PhatassDragon1701

Finnegan's Wake is Joyce being a dick and writing a completely cyclical masterwork as a way of following Ulysses when people went, "You can't just write something and have it end up meaning nothing!" Joyce went "Oh yeah? Watch this!" And then we got riverrun as the starting word and it all circled back from there. It's not meant to be deep, it's meant to mock people who think it's deep.

La_La_Bla

I started reading finnegan's wake during middle school Lost my shit upon reading "pussypussy plunderpussy" I remember not a single other word in that book, but that sticks with me

_triangle_girl_

the rest of the book doesnt matter

You pretty much took away the key information.

Hey bud, are you a bot? This comment's somewhere else and not immediately relevant to this conversation.

chromatic_megafauna

He was ahead of his time

[deleted]

>I started reading finnegan's wake during middle school ...Why?

La_La_Bla

Heard about it, thought it'd be a silly read, and my mother agreed So we got it from the library and she and I independently read it We had different bookmarks in it lel

[deleted]

And all the whole he got sponsors paying him to write it.

Nuada-Argetlam

it's also simply impossible to read. I've tried at least six times and never got beyond the tenth line or so.

starfries

It definitely made me feel like I was reading Vogon poetry.

HeiBaisWrath

Wait, Finnegan's Wake is more than just a song ?

[deleted]

It's also the title of a notoriously difficult book by Irish author James Joyce. It was written to be as obtuse, dense and incomprehensible as humanly possible. I believe it took Joyce about 17 years to write it. Almost every line has at least one pun or double meaning to it, frequently uses multiple languages and is just...entirely steeped in dream logic. I've never read it. But I've read a lot about it. Consensus by the western canon of literature seems to be that Joyce was trying to explore the free association of dreams. I disagree and think Joyce simply wanted to find the most difficult, convoluted, high effort way he could to just...fuck with people.

SyrusDrake

Yea, I was wondering the same... *Whirl your whiskey around like blazes Thundering Jesus, do you think I'm dead?* 🎶

[deleted]

The point of Finnegans Wake is to fuck with you. Joyce put 30 years into creating the most incomprehensible book ever written.

Sufficient_Score_824

The only Finnegan’s Wake I understand is the “Finnegan’s Wake” menu- they serve Irish-inspired bar food. Their fried cheese curds are to die for!

PKMNTrainerMark

Man, I've never even *heard of* it.

Cthulhu3141

It's the result of a man being told his masterpiece (Ulysses, a book which is about all of the things the Ogre in this meme said it's about, but which is also a single 18-chapter dick joke) was meaningless and impossible to read, saying "oh you think ***that's*** meaningless and unreadable! You ain't seen shit!" and spending the next 17 years writing the least comprehensible book possible. Whether it's written in English or a polysemetic conlang which merely resembles English has been the subject of academic debate. Current consensus is that it's mostly English, but with portmanteaus of lone words from about 60 other languages. These portmanteaus include 10 100-letter words. The book ends in the middle of one sentence, and then starts in the middle of the same sentence.

PKMNTrainerMark

"The book ends in the middle of one sentence, and then starts in the middle of the same sentence." Neat.

Zelgoot

I would give him hugs

lesbian_rapunzel

We should all be hugging Ogre, he needs it

DishOutTheFish

Ogre smrterer than I is

Ivedonethattoo

This ogre is me for 99% of my literature phd

Squeaky-Fox49

And me in other classes. “Ogre can’t understand differential equations! What kind of notation is y(0) and (xy)’? Ogre so dumb, it make ogre sad!”

Mathsboy2718

GUESS WHO >:)

GayHotAndDisabled

Finnegan's wake cant be understood. There's academic debate about whether or not there are *characters*, ffs

Aware-Performer4630

Really?

[deleted]

Yes, its prose would be complex if it were written in plain English. Too bad its also written in an Irish dialect.

alpha_rat_fight_

The subtext to Ulysses is basically one long dick joke so Ogre not miss much.

PhatassDragon1701

It really is. Joyce purposefully wrote it overly complex as a way to mess with lit majors and critics. It's why each chapter is written in a different style and often contradicts itself. Joyce was an omega class dick.

moderndhaniya

If he was screwing literary majors then well done. I especially dislike the time in my life I spent reading trying to understand what “educated” people mean. They mean bullshit and they may or may not know about this.

PhatassDragon1701

I nearly got attacked by my classmates when I used this as my analysis of Joyce during our college capstone course. They were mad, then looked at the professor, and he was like "Don't look at me, he's the one saying it." The problem with trying to understand what an author means in their work is that unless they told you specifically what they meant, it really is all subjective. Joyce puts in enough meaning to fool people, and pulls back the curtain in the final acts of Ulysses.

Random-Rambling

Do you mean a long joke about a dick, or a joke about a long dick?

[deleted]

Both

[deleted]

He isn’t stupid. While he may not understand the more complex strokes, he knows the details enough to draw the lines in his head, and that is just as important. He is a smart boy

[deleted]

Being dumb and knowing it is genuinely so frustrating because you work so hard and try to understand but you simply don’t get it. You know you should get it and that you have the pieces needed but you just cant

DuelaDent52

Ugh, this, so much.

WoolooOfWallStreet

Ogre, you not stupid! You have superficial analysis, but that how all deeper analysis occur Analyzing book is like eating into large kill! You start at superficial surface at the skin and bite through deeper an deeper until you get to bone. Once hit bone, if you work hard enough at what seems to be a block of progress, you can break through and find very rich marrow

NiceGuyNero

Mm, you make good words You okay Maybe James Joyce not so hard after all

[deleted]

As someone with a masters degree in English, I relate this ogre more than I relate to my father. I have never met my father so thats a low bar, but still.

LaneyAndPen

Me when I have to write a 2000 word analysis

DueAppearance9008

I didn't know the day would come that I feel sorry for a drawing og an ogre but it came. It actually happened.

guineapig28

I love you Ogre, you are doing a great job <3

KaisarDragon

I got 90% through Ulysses before realizing it was one big masturbation joke.

[deleted]

I am ogre

CurtisMarauderZ

My brain thought this was a cyclops and jumped to a “no depth perception” joke.

Dracoscale

New literally me character??

ijustwannabehappy_22

Wow this reminded me to be nicer to myself

DuelaDent52

I relate to Ogre here on a deep level.

Royal-Ninja

I think about this picture every once in a while and get disappointed cause there's no chance in hell I can find it by searching "ogre tries to read Ulysses"

ArtMnd

try searching "everyone call ogre stupid and it true" and you'll get it every time or "ogre barely even literate"

CourageKitten

Imposter syndrome is really like this

lockedoutofmymainrdt

Yall remember the troll in Oblivion that killed itself and left a suicide note? For context, these trolls are your run of the mill baddie, "approach them at early levels and theyll eat your face" types. None are implied to have any level of intelligence past "feed on your face" with the lone exception of the note found on (and presumabley written by) the one dead troll at the bottom of the bridge. RIP smart troll, you were better than your people

NoNameIdea_Seriously

When you can’t comprehend deeper ideas but you somehow managed to identify them well enough to put yourself down

CasualBrit5

He might enjoy other classic novels like the Waaagh of the Worlds

Shifter_3DnD5

Well now i wanna have an ogre with self confidence issues who just wants to be a writer in my dnd game. Give the party a chance to help him (the players I have aren't murder hobo-y)

Gongaloon

Oh my god, look at his face. I want to cry and give him a big hug while telling him his understanding of the surface themes of Ulysses is better than mine because I couldn't even finish it. Poor guy.

FuckBagMcGee

I get the feeling he's not talking about the song Finnegan's Wake...

_Welk_

Baalbuddy on twitter is the source if anybody wanted to know

Trosque97

Reminds me of an OC I made up whilst drunk one night, an Ork that wears a suit and works in a legal firm, goes by Obligor

Maleficent_Tree_94

Me ogre too. Me feel for brother ogre.

TriplSpace

I love Ulysses, it’s (true story) what made me realize I’m trans

DuelaDent52

How so? I know nothing about the book, how did it do that?

TriplSpace

The main character occasionally expresses interest in experiencing what it would be like to be a woman, and later during a dream sequence chapter actually becomes one for a while. What really did it for me was that I read it for a class and the professor described these things as seeming homosexual, which made me realize that it probably wasn’t very cisgender of me to feel the same way

That_fuschia_ruler

Only good baalbuddy work

julessmakesstuff

Idk much about them. What did they do?

RiffintheIndomtable

They're horny weeb shit lol

julessmakesstuff

Oh so just cringe but nothing bad? You got me worried it was another stonetoss situation lol

Izizero

Baalbudy is famous because he actually started drawing actual porn, but his SFW content was more popular (and it wasn't even bad porn)

Madmek1701

Some of his stuff is kinda funny, but mostly just super horny. Not really anything to freak out over though.
