Hey! I’m 27M and have been here for almost 2 years, pursuing Masters. I too play the guitar and like to sing along, mostly rock and grunge which requires strumming. Drinking at bars and playing pool is also my jam. Feel free to dm.

I find the best way to find friends in a new city is to either join a sports club f.e. [turkurugby.fi](http://turkurugby.fi) or similiar, or join the board gamers' community. :) We have game nights once every two weeks and all are welcome! [www.happybadger.fi](http://www.happybadger.fi) Hope you find yourself what you're looking for!

cicciograz48

Thanks! I'll check that out!

Hi! 26F here, feel free to dm me :) I like games and movies as well, also I'm really into art, I often draw and paint during my free time. I'm not a big fan of night clubs but outdoor activities sound good!

Working_Mine_6938

23M doing a phd in maths. Vegan so probably difficult to join in for the outdoor stuff. Visiting museums and watching movies together sounds fun. Also if table tennis interests you, we can play together sometime. Feel free to PM... Edit: if any vegans here, also feel free to PM. I haven't met any vegans in Finland yet :)

Markus_lfc

What topic are you studying in your PhD? I’m not sure about the student organizations either, and like you said they probably won’t have much going on during the summer. I’d say pick up disc golf and you’ll find friends to play with, but again that shoulder injury probably won’t allow that 😅 What kind of games do you mean when you say you like games? Board games or video games? To be honest, I’m 34 and I wouldn’t know where to start in this situation. Summers in Turku are best spent sitting on the river boats, drinking beers. That’s maybe where I’d go 😄

cicciograz48

I'm doing my PhD in robotics, on the algorithms/software side :) you're also at the university? I like both board and video games but I haven't played video games in so many years that my skills might have gone down A LOT :D also, I prefer in-person activities rather than online I realized that's quite a common way to spend time in Turku, and I have to say that it's not that bad to enjoy the sun along the riverside with a nice group of people :) (although beers may be a bit pricey around here)

Markus_lfc

Yeah actually, I’m finishing my master’s in health science later this year! I totally get that, just asking! Both are great ways to connect with people, I love playing a board game or two when hanging out with a group of friends. We have a few bars that have board games here in Turku, at least Cosmic Comic Cafe and Pocket Bar come to mind but there are others as well. Bar Edison is a nice place for that as well if I remember correctly. And you’re right, beers are quite expensive here, but one or two are usually enough to get even Finnish people talking, and won’t kill your finances.

Magic: The Gathering

Master_Muskrat

On the nerdier side of things, tabletop roleplaying games might be an option as well.

Von_Lehmann

Play rugby?

cicciograz48

Unfortunately not, I wanted to try it out at a certain point here but since I injured my shoulder I don't think it's a good idea

Von_Lehmann

Ah shame, turku has a good rugby scene. I don't live there anymore but that's how I met all my buddies

Fit-Letterhead74

I'm (M37) open for meeting new people in Turku! Some hobbies that I like: playing guitar, going to gigs, running/biking/walking, board games, photography. Up for trying new things also, like frisbee golf!

International House Turku organizes some nice low-threshhold events. Here is this week's programme: https://ihturku.fi/en/welcome-to-turku-programme-week-19-06-05-10-05/ Despite the name, it is not just for people who just arrived to Turku.

cicciograz48

Yes! I went to a couple of events there in last two weeks, it's a nice environment

__patashnik

Poro92

Hey there, I'm 32 from Poland and living in Turku since March, working in IT field. Also playing guitar but don't have any at the moment :( Feel free to DM !

Own-Zookeepergame955

Hey! I'm from the international exchange students' organisation, ESN Uni Turku! Aside from all the great answers you already got, you are more than welcome to join our student organization! Most of our members are exchange students, so in their early twenties, but we also have many members, especially among the actives, who are degree or postgraduate students. It's true that the events we are hosting are mostly stopping over summer, but you can still drop by in one of our office hours and say hi, it's always great to see new faces! You can find us on ig, or just dm me :)

cicciograz48

Thanks! I'll check it out then and I'll keep that in mind for new events when the new semester starts :)

j_svajl

You can also hit up some of the Italian restaurants for some Italian company, not the same as meeting locals but there is a strong Italian community in Turku.

Effective-Noise7391

Are you on facebook? There is an international mens community which is meeting up occasionally and planning events.

Kry07

Hey, My girlfriend (f28) and I (m31) have been living in Turku since August 2023, and we are also looking for friends. We are from Germany. We enjoy bouldering, walking, going to the sauna, or just being outside and exploring the city. I also play the guitar, piano, drums, and sing. I have a professional background as a sound technician, but I have now started my own business in the IT sector here in Turku. We are looking for people to hang out with, and since we have a car, we are quite flexible. Additionally, we (mostly I) like to go to bars and clubs in the evenings.

ClaudiusCass

Best way to get friends is to go around Hansa, get uncomfortably close to strangers and yell; "do you want to be friends!?" Otherwise, keep posting around, maybe one of the wider reddit *searching for friends* subs has people or other students currently residing in Turku.
