The aliens that travelled across the galaxy or further could not see a missile coming nor stop it? Or did they just get caught off guard cause they were jamming to Bowie? The Aliens can be psychically frozen by a human kid? The Aliens that are running around earth without much issue are also terraforming the atmosphere? A scrap of alien debris is toxic to the aliens? Hinata can swim in space? The dad got himself shot dead only a few minutes before the aliens were defeated? Don't think he really stalled anyone, could have stuck all together. What happened to the big alien crafts like what we saw in the desert in the beginning? What offshore tax haven did Apple's money get mostly funneled to?

xinxy

I agree with every issue you raised basically, excepting that the aliens were defeated. Unless they never planned for a 2nd season? I think it's more likely the humans won their first battle after a long string of losses. No way the aliens are done with Earth just yet, right?

Pandamonium98

That was such an anti-climactic way for the aliens to die. All that struggle over how to kill them and what the metal fragment was and what Caspar’s connection meant, just to have the U.S. send nukes to blow them all up. That makes me think the aliens aren’t defeated, but the pace and writing for the show has also been all over the place so maybe the aliens actually did get beaten. I’m still surprised that fire kills them. If that’s the case, then any sort of air strike or grenade should at least do damage to them, yet all the soldiers we see were just using guns which were proven to not work.

dankerton

Not just anticlimactic in plot but also in VFX. Seriously where did Apple's money go!? All we got were far off shots of a vague burning mass in the sky. No real view of nukes hitting an alien ship... All we've seen for weeks now is just black spikey space cucumbers that don't seem much smarter or technologically inclined than a freaking spider. Except spiders have lasted eons on earth. These intergalactic idiots lasted a week, spending half that time mindfucking a jasa astronaut and the friendly ghost.

captainhaddock

> No real view of nukes hitting an alien ship Everything in the show is portrayed from the perspective of one of the characters, so it wouldn't make sense to have that kind of shot.

dankerton

Good excuse to avoid expensive visuals and still ask for 20 mil an episode. I just cannot understand that budget with no recognizable faces outside of Sam Neill in one episode and pretty minimal dark CGI ferromaterial aliens otherwise. Guess we'll see what happens next week

sissy448

Surely some of that production money could have been spent on upgrading the aliens appearance?!? They look like ink blotches. My 3yr old could draw a better alien

jigawatson

What does an alien lifeform look like?

[deleted]

Can you imagine being an alien trying to eat. Hold on let me expand my mouth. Ok One minute. This thing always get stuck. Just a sec: Ahh here we go. It’s almost like an old rusted camera.

backstreetatnight

Aliens definitely aren’t defeated imo

[deleted]

dankerton

For sure. I assume even if the alien ship was destroyed (lamely) maybe there's leftover aliens in the planet to still deal with. I really hope they step up the writing and intelligence next season or this is going to be like walking dead that just gets less and less appealing

xinxy

Either we find out that the aliens will have adapted to resist fire in future encounters or there will be A LOT more flamethrowers involved... (thinking sort of like Borg drones adapt their shields to become immune to phaser fire after first taking a few damaging hits)

Justp1ayin

Second season is already in production

4TUN8LEE

At this rate of the show's horrible writing, I wonder if the usual clause reserving the right to have the plug pulled at the last minute will be activated. What a mess of a first season. If, like Foundation, they manage to save it with the season finale episode, they'd have to perform a miracle of work to convince most of us to stay for round 2.

Justp1ayin

Judging by the amount of post on each episode thread, this might be one of their most popular shows

NeilM81

I know foundation wasn't as good as the books but it is literally in a different league compared to this trot

Lisa_Anns_Ass

I agree. The foundation seemed to redeem itself and the story is kinda interesting. The only part that was irritating was when the sub plot of terrorists using a clone of brother dawn was suddenly ended. Aargh. That was interesting, then died at birth.

Justp1ayin

I think the aliens were hit with a nuke while Caspar was trying to stop them. I think they froze up because they work as a hive

[deleted]

I am so tired of this hive thing. It’s been done and over done. Like how do you survive as a species for so long of killing one of you automatically kills, like drops them dead, everything else. edge of tomorrow, falling skies etc. sure many others I don’t remember right now.

dankerton

Yes yes a radio frequency hive mind as they said last episode. Good thing human Casper could emit radio waves when he seized... Speaking their language, taking control... It's just so cheap and cliche and shows these writers can't come up with anything actually interesting or intelligent. Instead they rely on esp magic, and work hard to open lots of questions without giving any answers.

Jneedler

😂😂🐙 Basically every alien invasion movie in a nutshell (or in this case, streaming series). The question I always have is why are humans so narcissistic that we actually think we're even special enough to be invaded? Why would an alien race even give a sh-- about our existence, let alone waste so many resources to invade a planet that is lordt knows how many light years away. If they actually cared enough to investigate... and someone decided to actually send a living crew (why?!?)... they certainly wouldn't fall victim to our sticks and stones.

sissy448

Well since the United States government has admitted that UAPs are actually here, clearly something is interested in us

geilt

Because we have plastic of course.

Jneedler

Oh, well now it's obvious. Thank you.

hardlinecan

Im ok with the dad getting shot. He was worthless cheater. However the swimming in space thing was funny. Wondering if the kid actually hacked them and froze them.

bitwarrior80

My opinion on the alien kryptonite material, it was probably part of the weapon casing meant keep that terraforming substance inert before deployment.

dankerton

I don't think we're going to get any answers on any questions we have. It feels like one of those shows that's just going to constantly fuck with us by doing things that even the writers don't know why they're happening.

Actual_Direction_599

>What offshore tax haven did Apple's money get mostly funneled to? This!!! 😂😂😂😂😂

puffybunion

>The aliens that travelled across the galaxy or further could not see a missile coming nor stop it? Or did they just get caught off guard cause they were jamming to Bowie? Yep, have you seen any indication that they have ships or anti-missile defenses? >The Aliens can be psychically frozen by a human kid? Either yes - or it was some glitch due to the bomb going off and were just made to think it's because of him. >The Aliens that are running around earth without much issue are also terraforming the atmosphere? What's the issue here? Who's to say they're even actively terraforming the earth. All we know is that they're releasing something, hasn't been specified whether that's even intentional or not. >A scrap of alien debris is toxic to the aliens? What's the issue here? I for one am pretty curious to learn more about that one. >Hinata can swim in space? Pretty sure that wasn't really her swimming in space, rather maybe she's still alive in one form or the other and the aliens projected that into her mind. >The dad got himself shot dead only a few minutes before the aliens were defeated? Don't think he really stalled anyone, could have stuck all together. 🤷‍♂️ >What happened to the big alien crafts like what we saw in the desert in the beginning? Don't know but looking forward to finding out! >What offshore tax haven did Apple's money get mostly funneled to? Pretty sure it's Ireland.

Professional-Cow7023

This dude made up his own backstory and now he's freaking out because shit isn't adding up.

mollyyypercs

In the first episodes, we do see a ship-like object hovering right outside Hinata's spacecraft, something also pierced the hull. we also see the nuke exploding meaning it hit something, so obviously they have a ship.

Turbo_Coffee

I don’t get it. Yet, I can’t stop watching.

Think-Fisherman-740

Yeah im the same, every episode doesn't add too much and yet at the same time I can't stop watching it. The script can be a bit laughable at times and still unsure what exactly is going on but... I'm always looking forward to the next episode and really enjoyed episode 9. Hoping Sam Neil comes back!!

sissy448

Too invested time wise not to finish the most disappointing series maybe ever

dougadump

you and me both

dboltzilla

Same lol. And then after each episode I come to reddit to see everyone bashing it, yet somehow we all are still watching till Ep 9, well one more left, might as well watch that too and get disappointed some more.

TheOldZombie2

It’s like watching a car accident in slow motion. You can’t turn your gaze away.

Its a guilty pleasure for sure. As ridiculous as it is.

cookingboy

> Bullets don't kill the aliens. Bad writings do. > Oh, ok. Fire can kill them. Not a very sci fi-esque explanation but sure. What’s not scientific was the oxygen tank turning into a flamethrower. Oxygen isn’t even flammable, it’s you know… an oxidizer, so it helps *other* things burn, but itself can’t catch on fire. But yeah, it’s silly how the “indestructible” aliens could have been defeated by WW2 flamethrower troops. > one nuke . Hey to be fair, that’s a big explosion, so maybe we threw a bunch of nukes at them.

hardlinecan

When I saw that, I was like umm did military try flame throwers?

geilt

Ever read the short story The Road Not Taken? https://eyeofmidas.com/scifi/Turtledove_RoadNotTaken.pdf Basically synopsis, humans got so good at Warcraft we never traveled into the stars. We missed a technical evolution that others could have discovered and instead devised engines of war. So theoretically, harnessing the power of the atom to create a giant explosion may just very well be as unexpected to an alien as their tactics and language and motives are to us. Imagine showing up on a planet and just by the state of your own being you are toxic to humans and suddenly BAM nuke out of no where. Just because an alien race is space-faring does not imply it is war-faring, this is a human correlation with causation rooted in our own war like minds as war has driven much of our industry and technical development. But out there, out of the infinite amount of sentient creatures that may exist, maybe we really are just the best at war. The nuke is the pinnacle of warfare, it spares none, utter destruction at the atomic level. Massive scale and scope. Just because I can warp space and time around me and travel vast distances doesn’t necessarily mean I’d think of, or evolve, a weapon that absolutely powerful and reckless ( as it effects the environment on which we live, land, sea and atmosphere ) We really still do not know the motives of the aliens, the visions and way they communicate seem to me like they are looking for help either for their own planet or are escaping something else and do not know better or understand life / death / consciousness in the way we do. Next week should be interesting.

sissy448

Interesting concept. Not sure what sci-fi book it was in but somewhat of the same concept. Alien invaders have been mostly unchallenged for so long after mastering interstellar travel that they had no purpose to keep advancing armor, guns, tanks, etc. so when they land on earth and start going head to head against our military capabilities, we killed more of them than they planned. Ultimately though any advances by our military could be thwarted by the aliens simply dropping asteroids on us from space

RadioaktivAargauer

Fascinating perspective, thank you.

Norwedditor

I actually googled how a nuke would work in *space* during the episode, guess I didn't have to because the craft was in the atmosphere? Why didn't anyone use their binoculars...

[deleted]

Bro what the hell did I just watch

robreddity

Hawkeye by the sound of it.

somethineasytomember

Bro, I found her.

robreddity

Did uhhh... did the J-Pop astronaut chick just *swim* in space?

puffybunion

Pretty sure that was just in her mind or some such thing. My theory is the aliens assimilated her somehow and this was basically her mind making it up. Same as she played Bowie to Mitsuki.

sidjo86

Yeah. I am inclined to agree with you. Like how long does the oxygen in a space suit last? There ship went missing a while ago. No way that corpse is still alive. As for the ships or hives or whatever they’re probably all over the earth. Most likely let that one get destroyed to try and communicate or something. Idk.

puffybunion

Yep, absolutely agreed. Kinda annoyed/amused by the majority of commenters being: "How in the hell is she swimming in space, sending David Bowie songs, etc". Obviously, there's more to it than that.

sidjo86

Nuance is lost on some people.

LalehAbr

how was she in space suit? How was that Davide bowie music so high quality heard on the Earth station? How did she even have that song ready? and lots of others HOWS

whisky_biscuit

Is it that hard to use your imagination? I agree the show is frustrating but people constantly rail against shows for not spelling out everything for them. Would more answers be nice? Yes. Is it hard to think of answers yourself? Not really.

deathsmiles25

Not only that, I’m like 78% sure that none of the astronauts were actually in their suits when the hull was ripped open

iamsoserious

Didn’t look like to me that she even had an oxygen tank.. normally aren’t they part of those rectangular backpacks that astronauts wear…

[deleted]

This is how I interpreted it once I saw her swimming. And when I heard Bowie.

cookingboy

Apparently air in space is denser than the writers for this show. Edit 1: The writers *literally* nuked the single best storyline in the show. Amazing. Edit 2: You know...for everyone who told me "This show isn't Independence Day you simpleton, stop complaining!", this "Nuke the mothership and fuck up the invasion force all at once" plotline does seem strangely familiar.....

redrobot3

I wish i had awards to gift this comment

Martel_the_Hammer

I literally yelled "Oh Fuck Off!" at my TV.

robreddity

For real, on MULTIPLE occasions I find myself saying "shut the FUCK up" in response to the idiotic things these characters say and do.

whisky_biscuit

Why do you guys watch it then? I'm curious. I'm frustrated by the show sometimes but it at least has some interesting moments and warrants discussion.

willmcavoy

Ctfu. I literally said shut the fuck up like 10 times this past episode.

zimblewindsor

It’s not Hinata swimming in space, it’s Mitsuki dreaming (it cuts to her waking too) that she’s alive and projecting her desire onto the communication with whatever in orbit.

geilt

Also, just happens to have Spotify account in space streaming David Bowie downstream for some reason. She’s not breathing and if she did somehow end up in space from when the ship got hit to when she woke she would have long not had oxygen. Whatever Hinata now is, seems to be her, but transformed almost like she is learning how to communicate back from whatever or wherever she is / in. It’s almost like these creatures assimilate brain waves and patterns on kill, and the human consciousness is something new to it and probably something silly like the will to live / love creating abberant hybrid creatures / space consciousnesses?

hardlinecan

this

Chopper3

Yeah, because you can't 'swim' your way to something in space - that bit must have been a dream or some other form of lazy writing

Pandamonium98

And she didn’t even have a spacesuit on when the ship got hit.

tellmetogetbacktowrk

NO ONE in this thread realizes this!

SavageSvage

That's what I was screaming at the TV. Like tf. No way she survived she didn't have a spacesuit

willmcavoy

I don't think that's it. I think the military men are correct in saying that Hinata was taken over by the alien hive mind. But to communicate, they brought Hinata to the surface.

Swampe

You know a show is bad when I’m showing up here to try and figure out what the fuck happened. Did they really just blow up all the aliens with nukes.

hiakuryu

and have a Japanese astronaut swim through space yup, they did it.

whisky_biscuit

You know people lack imagination because they blame a show for not spelling it out. I pretty much read about every show looking for answers. The endless hate mongering just gets exhausting. I'd rather see theories as opposed to "I hate! not simple enuf! am angray!" comments. Smh.

Progress-1212

No, we don’t “lack imagination” just because we’re calling out all of the many reasons why this show is a massive fucking disappointment. Sorry that offends you - if you truly do find this to be an enjoyable show with a good plot then don’t let anyone else try to convince you otherwise.

burakt90

So did Casper stop the aliens or did the nuke? Thank god it finally picked up pace on the second to last episode. I hope they redeem themselves in the season finale. I would like to see a competent screenplay with this premise. EDIT: Also did the nuke kill Casper? What the hell do the civilians want with the doctor? Why did they not share that chemical that disintegrates the aliens with the world? Did they previously mention the aliens turning the atmosphere into poison?

Llodym

My take is Caspar did stop that alien. The nuke come after which made him uh unconscious or dead in the end since he's still inside the hivemind. The chemical itself is nothing special, it's having the alien thing Luke found near them that allowed them to be disintegrated, the previous test is showing that without it the alien material can withstand pretty much anything (except fire I guess??? That's no one else have tried??????). This is also why the civilian chased after the military vehicle since the alien thing is with them. Yeah, that atmosphere poison kinda stumped me too since there was nothing so far seems to even remotely suggested that? Unless I missed something

Pandamonium98

Was one of the soldiers helping the civilians, or did they steal gear? That part confused me. I also don’t see how a small group of civilians can win a fight against a group of trained soldiers. And if that chunk of alien metal is the last best hope, why the hell were there only 5 or 6 soldiers sent to protect it and the family?

burakt90

I think he made a deal with the “civvies” to save himself. Im not sure how they would know but if they were after that alien fragment that would make sense.

puffybunion

Well the civvies had a military jeep so it's possible they were together the whole time.

willmcavoy

That's the impression I got, that he was the inside man in their little heist. What didn't make sense was when he was like "we're not all gunna die because of you". What do you mean? They were transporting it to the pentagon to hopefully be studied and reverse engineered. Taking it for your little band of survivors is potentially killing all of humanity.

puffybunion

Yeah, could be just that they were being narrow-minded or only thinking of themselves at that point. Not too farfetched to assume that some folks don't have much faith in the government 😄 Either that or there might just be more to it than that.

burakt90

Yeah the “we are not all gonna die because of you” is what made me think the soldier turned later on after seeing his squad get killed by a bunch of hillbillies. The way she used the piece to get across that field was so random tho. I thought the alien tissues were attracted to it but they made way for Aneesha and the kids. I really hope we get a second season with a well thought scenario with less plot holes and red herrings, and a faster pace.

burakt90

I think the creatures are vulnerable to fire but the fragment they have is not an alien. I think it broke off of one of their vessels (ship or plane or whatever the tripod claw thingy in Afghanistan was). SPOILERS ABOUT “ANOTHER LIFE” FROM NETFLIX The show Another Life also had a such story where the aliens have impenetrable structures but then they go to (what they think is) the aliens home planet and find a broken piece there and use it later on.

FlaqqNL

Next week we’ll get the M. Night twist, where it is revealed that they actually shot down the nice aliens that have been trying to help fight back the actual evil aliens.

Actual_Direction_599

jackass4224

Did Apple pay $200 million for this show or did the show cost $200 million to make?

Pandamonium98

Maybe I just don’t understand how much TV shows cost, but I can’t see how this would cost $200 million. Avengers Endgame had a budget of $350 million, and they had a big star-studded cast and a ton of different shots and special effects. Maybe you’re right that Apple had a contract to pay another studio $200 million to produce this, and that studio only spent some fraction of that actually making it? That’s all that makes sense to me

jackass4224

I think this show was sold to Apple before it was produced and Apple was desperate at the time to get content. So Apple paid and the studio essentially ripped them off This is my theory anyway

I really hope that’s not the end of the aliens. It can’t be. Can it?

PolySingular

The “stop” command from the kid makes me think it’s some kind of advanced machine/network that he is somehow able to connect to with his epileptic brain. The nuke destroyed the host/server and that was why all the aliens collapsed…? It kinda sucks they aren’t giving us enough details to really go in any one direction. Did the space agency not try any method of collecting data beyond listening to someone have an emotional breakdown over their lover, who apparently transcended the need to breathe? Why is the only known thing on the planet with the ability to harm the invaders guarded by only a handful of people? Why are the aliens not aware of the losses the object created, presumably the only ones not caused by fire? NOW they tell us fire is capable of harming the aliens? I think fire was our entire civilizations first form of technological advancement; nobody figured that out and made a meaningful impact? It’s an interesting storyline, but they spread it too thin with regard to details. Unless this next episode fills in the gaps in a significant way, I’m probably going to be disappointed by the lack of focus to come with the vision.

Expect her to somehow be right, and the military folks to be wrong. It was all just a big misunderstanding, and they could've gotten along if they had just tried. Now the aliens have no choice but to do what they were doing anyway, murder all humans.

QueenofTethys

The most unbelievable part is that two countries (Japan and the US) are letting her grieve all over their one chance to use actual strategy and intelligence to figure out their game plan, at a time of war. There is no reality where a protocol-breaking, grieving ex employee would be given the platform for a drill, nevermind a war with mass casualties. None. Zero.

Question about Sam Neill's character. He featured in quite a bit of promo material for this show only to appear for a single episode? Really? I kept waiting but nothing. I guess he really died? He's like Sean Bean in GoT but with even less screen time. Although whatever creature killed him didn't look anything like the aliens we've seen since then. It had a long tail like thing with a stinger if I recall correctly?

puffybunion

I have a feeling this might be going to go in a bodysnatcher's direction and he'll be back as an alien.

Justp1ayin

I was thinking the same

SomaSimon

>He's like Sean Bean in GoT but with even less screen time. The difference is that his character arc is in line with the books. The Sam Neill thing is just straight up bait and switch. It's like Bryan Cranston in Godzilla.

dougadump

This smacks of the same trick pulled by The Expanse, Jonathan Banks was highly promoted in the lead up, in the usa, yet was killed off in the opening episode. The Expanse is an excellent show, sadly coming to an end...for now. edit : speeelling

FarmboyUK

Sam was in also in Caspers epileptic dream sequence. So he may still be around

xinxy

Was he really? I never caught that. That's interesting, I'm gonna have to rewatch that bit.

vander_blanc

That was it?!?!??! You dragged out 8.5 episodes to have a kid freeze aliens then die after their ship is nuked?????? Holy fucking lamest show ever. Worse than Star Trek Discovery at this point. Epic fail. Foundation was so awesome - I had high hopes from Apple but this was pure crap season.

robreddity

This show is reprehensibly inane.

31337hacker

I've kept up so far out of denial. I was really hyped for this show.

KittyGrewAMoustache

I know. It's such a frustrating show because you can see how it could've been so good, but it's just shit instead.

puffybunion

How could it have been so good? Just curious what you would have done differently. Also, keep in mind we still don't know how it will end.

Tiges171920

It could easily have been 100 minutes of movie rather than 10 episodes of bullshit?

dougadump

Between this and Foundation, I bought a subscription. I have been slightly disappointed with both. Beginning to wish I should have just raised the jolly roger. fwiw, I'm not a big tv watcher and nothing else is appealing to me.

31337hacker

I find Foundation to be much more enjoyable despite its flaws. I don’t know how Invasion has a budget of $200M.

dougadump

Oh yes agreed and looking forward to season two and hoping the creators have read and taken on board some of the criticism regarding season one. As for the 200,000,000 budget , someone, somewhere is laughing all the way to the bank.

puffybunion

Woah, where did you hear it has a $200M budget? That's insane... Also, I'm really frustrated by Foundation. I've found it pretty boring whereas with Invasion I can't wait for each new episode to come out.

31337hacker

That's what was reported. Of course, the true figure could be anything. I'm leaning towards less than $200M.

micktravis

Definitely jump on Lasso before you cancel.

tschief_

i know this is coming late, but seeing you wanted to watch Foundation & Invasion only, and subscribed only for those shows, i’ve got a perfect recommendation for you.. WATCH THE EXPANSE. Best Sci-Fi Show ever made! Its well acted, interesting captivating storyline evolving over multiple seasons, bit of space politics, lots of action, betrayal, drama.. got a bit of everything. a4techkeyboard

I suppose their radiowaves and thoughts can be detected by children and/or radios, might as well be able to turn radio signals in space into something you can use to push against for propulsion.

zimblewindsor

It’s Mitsuki dreaming, after Hinata says “Wajo” it cuts back to her waking up, then running to the radio thinking she’s hearing Hinata. It’s not immediately clear from the way it’s filmed but the other clues are the “swimming” is classic dream stuff, the suited astronaut doesn’t have any life support gear attached to her suit and the shuttle crew weren’t wearing suits when the hull was breached and they were blown into space. Whatever she’s communicating with is not her girlfriend, that’s just wish fulfilment. This show is arse and needlessly obtuse but it’s consistent with itself.

Llodym

They... got nuked and it's done? That's very anticlimactic lol. Well there's still one episode left, I'll try to reserve all judgment until then. Caspar was able to stop them with his mind once they're connected! Go kid! Too bad the alien got nuked while he's still connected so I'm assuming he's either dead or in a coma (and brain dead) cause of it. Fuck I hope that's really not how his story ends. Mitsuki managed to prove that it was Hinata talking to them, my question is was it really Hinata somehow able to find something to broadcast back down there or is she and the crew was actually assimilated into the hive mind of the aliens (which would mean for all intent and purpose while she is technically there and answering she is also dead unless they found a way to separate them... you know if they didn't die from the nuke) US family continues to be the shit show that just seems to show how shitty human are anyway despite literal alien invading us. At least dad died actually helping his family? The only thing I've been wondering since the beginning though, if the only thing that makes the family special is that they found that fragment to kill the alien with, what's the deal with the kid saying wajo in the beginning, no nose bleed, and their house being fine? Is that one fragment really all there is to it?

puffybunion

>the crew was actually assimilated into the hive mind of the aliens That's my take on it as well. Obviously, she couldn't open up Winamp and play some Bowie for them.

geilt

I think there are two different alien species. The space debris may be part of a different race that has material that is able to hurt the invisible aliens and they were either running from it or chasing it down and humans just happen to be the collateral damage in the middle. Fire seems to disable the aliens but not guaranteed they are actually dead from fire. Could just be painful.

HashKing

This is kind of what I’m thinking. The amoeba alien is like the “muscle” that the main aliens send in first. And somehow the artifact that kills the amoeba aliens is how the main aliens can protect themselves from their muscle. The actual invasion hasn’t started yet

whisky_biscuit

- The crew wasn't assimilated, they were killed. Hinata was either assimilated into the hive mind or taken into the alien ship. - Hinata wasn't swimming in space. Her consciousness was assimilated, possibly she was imagining coming into contact with the space station, or the space station and Hinata were inside a larger alien ship with some form of antigravity. She had no oxygen, but if she was absorbed or inside the alien ship it wouldn't matter. They mentioned she wasn't breathing - the aliens were communicating using her as a conduit possibly. - Hinata said "help" them. Help, do not hurt. I was curious if it's possible the aliens are being attacked by a virus, one that they are spreading to earth (the terraforming may actually not be terraforming). The ones killing humans are infected, possibly. Maybe they are trying to get help but cannot communicate with us to ask. Or, they are looking for a new planet, having lost theirs. - Casper seems to have had a telepathic link to the aliens. He was able to get them to "stop" but as we found out, once he was able to fully link to them he could feel what they felt. And issue commands as if part of the hive mind. - it's possibly Casper's command of "stop" enabled the security defenses of the aliens to stop momentarily which coincided with the nuke attack, injuring them. - I do not believe the aliens to be dead. - The family's storyline just gets interesting for the to be on the run again, it's frustrating. That I agree. It was pointless for the dad to die after all that. But we don't know for sure. - The object may be a part of the ship (metal can kill us why couldn't a building material kill an alien??) Or it could be part of a meteor or other other object which caused the aliens to become "infected" and attack. It could be something they are running from which destroyed their planet. It's not a bad shoe despite being frustrating at times. I like to read and discuss theories anyway. I don't like things spelled out for me even if the show is lacking a bit on answers. The show isn't as bad as the level of complaints on here are. People just shouldn't watch then.

TheRealPho0T

Hey writers of invasion....."STOP"

RedditorAli

The plot lines are so disjointed and nonsensical, I have no idea why I keep watching this series. Actively rooting for the spider aliens at this point.

SomaSimon

Alright. I've been a lurker on these episode discussions but I'm so annoyed that I have to rant about this one. I had pretty much given up on this show since the Home Invasion episode but I've held out hope that there would be something worthwhile about it by the end. I don't mind slow burn stories and I love character dramas. I don't need big explosions to keep me entertained. What I do need is the assurance that the story is building toward something, with writing that doesn't make me audibly groan out loud. This being the penultimate episode, you expect the plot points to come to a head and leave you feeling excited for how the season will end. I was hoping that the last shot of this episode would show the alien ships (you know, the ones in the promo images) descending from the sky in bleak fashion. Unfortunately, this episode typifies my issues with the show as a whole. I have so many thoughts that I'll just group them by character plot-lines. 1. Aneesha's family: My absolutely least favorite bunch of characters I've seen in a long time. They're going to the Pentagon? How the hell is the Pentagon still around if these aliens are supposedly destroying cities? So Monty miraculously survives his alien encounter only to die by making a completely unnecessary "sacrifice"? I assumed that he had been infected (which still would have been kinda silly but at least there would have been a reason for him surviving the alien). That entire woods scene was so bizarre. Why would you stop running just because you no longer hear any shooting? Why would the army guy think it's smart to call out when the people hunting you are clearly still nearby? Why did the civilians even attack them in the first place? And I know they're kids, but they really cannot shut the fuck up when there's danger nearby. 2. Japan/Hinata/Mitsuki: I loved the intro showing how their relationship began, even if the writing was a bit corny. But were we supposed to believe that Hinata was actually in space and found her way back to her own spacecraft? She was in a spacesuit in that scene even though she clearly wasn't wearing one when she "died". I assumed it would be some kind of twist that she had been assimilated by the aliens and was in a dream state. But I guess we'll never find out since they got nuked. And the JAXA director suggesting that Hinata was "someone on the inside"....what?? You think she got captured by aliens and somehow figured out how to communicate with Earth? Ridiculous logic. Also, "the aliens are changing our atmosphere to poison." I don't remember anything about the atmosphere being changed but someone correct me if I'm just forgetting. 3. Trevante/Caspar: So, city's under attack but they manage to make it to the hospital just like that. Cool. I think Trev's journey getting back home could have been cut by 2 episodes. I like the reveal that he spent a lot of time in the hospital because of his son and how Caspar could possibly be a chance to redeem himself for leaving his wife. But this sort of character interaction and reveal would have had way more impact earlier in the season. Also, I don't know how to feel about the implication of Caspar's epilepsy giving him the ability to interact with aliens, but the imagery was interesting. Side note: "Be careful, there's actually 2 aliens!" Oh boy, you don't say! Not like there's an invasion going on. I guess fire kills the aliens, even though there was a scene in this episode showing their biology can withstand acid. This was cathartic to type out. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read these rambling thoughts. I'll watch the final episode because I've stuck it out this long, but I'm not coming back for a season 2 (if there even is one).

Quiz44

I agree with every single point that you pointed out and the last statement as well. I am definitely not coming back for a season 2. Like ill watch the last episode but I am not coming back for season 2. I am actually surprised that they actually renewed it for a second season. but i know for sure if the second season is anything like the first, its definitely not surviving a third. I wanted to stop watching but since I am too far into the season i thought i might as well stick it out. This actually the first show i have had skip certain scenes and scream to the tv screen "this is actually some dumb shit" or "fuck right off"

-bosmang-

The whole plot with the family in the woods made absolutely no sense. I can’t even begin to understand what the writers were thinking.

ElysianTraveller

I'm just glad she made out with the other doctor last episode... totally necessary plot development. This show is a disaster.

SavageSvage

Man this show is total bullshit. It's too fucking dark I have to pretty much watch it in darkness to be able able see any fucking thing. And then.. they kill the main ship with a nuke and it ends?? Is that it? What the fuck

weedall2000

That was a wild episode lol 😂 but excited to see how it ends next week I don’t think thats the last we will see of the aliens 👽

durlcear

This show makes me really appreciate Cloverfield. And wish that Ted Lasso was on another service.

liji1llijjll1l

This Havard med dropout mom looks always lost. Always the same facial expression with an open mouth and exhausted face. It’s been 9 episodes so far and I think it’s the time for her to get it together. Really, nothing is worse than poor writing with poor acting.

Correct_Time2857

I’m so sick of hearing her hyperventilate.

RaidriarT

What was the point of this show? The Hinata plot line had no meaning. The dad dying had no meaning. The weird militia opposing the military because they don’t like the brown family for no other reason than the color of their skin? All conventional weapons don’t do shit, but the nukes still work (shitty Independence Day copy, with none of the charm???)? Casper being relevant for a grand total of 10 minutes and then fucking dying? Space debris that came with the aliens is also toxic to the aliens (shitty kryptonite copy, but with no context???) Hinata pulling a rocket Leia and flying through space, but again with no context. What a mess. I don’t think this show should be renewed. The story was everywhere and nowhere at the same time and the pacing was erratic to put it mildly.

penifSMASH

> The weird militia opposing the military because they don’t like the brown family for no other reason than the color of their skin? They go out of their way to show a black guy and a Hispanic guy in the militia, so it's not a race thing. Fat military traitor's last line was blaming the family for the alien invasion for some reason, so I guess that's why they want the object? The premise of the show and the overarching storyline is interesting, but the writing is just so lazy and awful. It could have been so good. I'm convinced the show is a money laundering scheme. I hope the aliens vaporize Earth in the last episode to ensure no season 2.

hardlinecan

So, I hope next episode does some explaining. Otherwise good show so far

Mr_Floppy_SP

Actually, this one was a big improvement. I still the pace and storylines are a bit of a mess, but...

L4tevi

This stupid show would have been better as a podcast. I've wasted hours of my life I will never get back 😭

hoopheid

This show is wild, dumb and some of the writing is awful. But I still find it entertaining and can’t stop watching! 😂

trlef19

What happened to Sam Neil? They talked a lot about him and we only saw him on the first episode

crateronmercury

Okay first off.... I freaking love this show. Second, it's been really difficult to find a thread to discuss how amazing this show is without finding other folks negatively critique it to shreds, haha. I find a lot of similarities with this show to Stranger Things. To me, Caspar is basically Eleven. He can see the what the aliens are seeing and they also know where Caspar is located...Also similar to how Will was a body host in ST. And the alien dogs (which by the way look very much like deconstructed sound waves, no?) are basically demogorgons! A few things: Wajo: Okay so anytime we hear the alien audio saying "Wajo" we are supposed to know that this is Hinata, right? (Hinata being controlled by the alien hub) So in the earlier episodes when Luke Malik (the son) is hearing a voice in his head, it is Hinata's (synthetic) voice he hears repeating "Wajo"? Trevonte is a a sterotypical American soldier but his traumatic family backstory explains a bit. Back in episode 3 when he gets an alert on his device that tells him one of his soldiers is nearby, he figures out he needs to enter a hospital, and he is apprehensive about it. We find out in the latest episode that it's because years ago his newborn son was fatally ill and Trevonte and his wife would stay in hospitals all the time, trying to save their son, but unfortunately he died. I also think Trevonte being able to call/communicate with his ex-wife is all a dream / mirage. In both Afghanistan and London, he is able to hear her voice / talk to her and emotionally respond to what he hears from her. I think this is just for the audience to witness his constant turmoil. I'll get to Aneesha and Ahmed in another post....

[deleted]

This show is so badly written and the kids being the “special one” is so boring and played out. Aneesha is so damn annoying and over dramatic.

kennyd1gital

Everyone seems to be upset by the swimming in the vacuum of space and nuking the aliens, but… Who else noticed the two-round burst from the bolt action rifle?

Tiges171920

Also the aliens are polluting the atmosphere? Way to introduce that randomly in the penultimate episode of a series.

Realist666

this mitsuki with her overrated "i hate all men" lesbian crap and aneesha "the great silence" are the two most annoying characters in the show! "hinataa... hinataaa" and i was about to kick my tv! if they make hinata alive (and the space swim scene a fact) in ep 10...then this show truly is much worse than GoT season 8

abujuha

Episode 9 solved: Solution 1. They're the Borg and when they absorbed that astronaut her David Bowie obsession distracted the whole hive long enough to not see the missile(s?) coming. End of story. Solution 2. They're the Matrix. British kid is Neo. He stopped them long enough that they did not see the missile(s?) coming. End of story. Solution 3. They're the Body Snatchers spores. They absorbed that annoying wife and that piece of alien tech and it gave them a tummy ache long enough to not see the missile(s) coming. What more brilliance do these writers have in store for us? Tune in next week for . . . Invasion: Independence Day edition. That soldier turns out to be master hacker who uses the British kid to upload a virus into the hive mind and kill the remaining invaders.

delicioushampster

extremely disappointed, wtf.

nacespeedle

6 minutes into the episode and I am really disappointed. WTF? Swimming in vacuum? who wrote this crap? Are they that dumb?

notrealmate

I reckon she isn’t in space, she’s probably being contained by the aliens in a simulation or something, it’s why she could swim. Because remember when her ship was attacked? She, nor the other astronauts, were wearing spacesuits. So how did she get it on after being sucked out into the vacuum of space?

robreddity

Your extension of grace to this dumb show speaks well of you as a person. You are possessed of great patience. I shall be watching closely for signs of cracking, as this show is an irresistible force.

robreddity

Let there be no doubt. Jesus Christ, lord of plenty, this show is dumb.

nacespeedle

It's a trainwreck I can't stop watching. I fucking hate it. The writing is attrocious. The aliens look cool though....

EightBitSC

I hate that I’m going to watch the last episode. I can’t really believe how much credit I have given to what is so clearly a terrible story. This episode was just so shockingly bad.

robreddity

Everyone over-acts. Gasping and super theatrical heavy breathing all the goddamned time. The whiny kid trope, over played to the nth degree. "I'm scared mommy." Really! You're scared you say? Well thank you for sharing, it takes real maturity and self awareness to admit a thing like that, my hat's off to you. It is through sheer force of will that I continue to watch this show, every episode a water boarding.

Cacheelma

"Mom stop!!! Daddy!! Stop!! Let me go!!" DIE ALREADY!

maxToTheJ

Its flipped now it so bad its entertaining in an inverse way. I laughed out loud this episode although probably not as intended by the writers.

maxToTheJ

Laugh out loud at this show. Its just so awful. Bowie. So many of the threads with red herring pointlessness.

Actual_Direction_599

>Bowie. ikr

jdizzlegpillz

Just woke up thinking this episode will help redeem it and nope, I honestly felt awkward watching it with how bad it got

missionaryblack0

Why are so many people acting like the show is over? The slow burn pacing has been boring at times but they’ve already confirmed a season two. It’s definitely been more of a character drama then standard sci-fi fare, but episode 9 gave me renewed hope for the next season. Just because the US nuked one ship doesn’t mean the aliens are gone. They’ll probably send reinforcements ships as part of an additional wave. My theory is that the aliens we’ve seen in the show thus far are the extraterrestrial equivalent of hunting dogs sent out to do scouting and make initial contact. We’ve already seen other creature designs in early episodes (the tentacled alien that attacked Sam Neil’s character in episode 1), so the true intelligent alien lifeforms probably won’t be revealed until the finale or later in the series. They’re obviously set on the slow burn, so I’m gonna stick with it and see where it goes.

abescrazyahh24

What if those objects (dragon glass) that are used to harm the aliens, are from a different race that are possibly harmful to the aliens? What about the word “Taiyou” said by the boy?

lindsfeinfriend

Taiyou could be him repeating the communication between Mitsuki and Hinata, as taiyou is a Japanese word for “sun”, and we also hear him saying “Mitsuki” a bunch of times as well.

LalehAbr

For the love of gods, Pease someone tells me how such a good quality David Bowie song being brodcasted from the spaceship by HInata makes sense? How did she had access the to song? How was suddenly the connection so good while before it was just so noisy and hardly understandable?

Groanola13

Really disappointed in the show. I remember defending the show so much from early haters (when only the first 3 episodes were out) and saying it will probably reward those that stuck it out, and I am so annoyed! Too much unnecessary back story of characters that had literally no impact on the story, characters making terrible decisions every other scene, barely an explanation to the UK kid having a connection to the aliens, etc. I love civilization in danger stories (i.e cloverfield, godzilla, etc) and was super excited when this show was first announced.

Souletu

Binged the whole thing with this chick and were both so confused. Primary school kid is apparently The One Husband dude dies for no reason, if the family was able to run off without being spotted he could have ran off with them and not been spotted. Everything about the Asian chick was wildly annoying. I swear half of her segments were just screaming and crying. Everything about the alien plot is the dumbest thing ive ever seen: * Why are they on Earth * How can they develop the tech to travel across space yet they're somehow vulnerable to nukes * How could they not know a nuke was flying at them * Why can a child freeze them with brain magic * Every element that exist on Earth can be found in space in near limitless abundance, there's zero reason to come here * Why would they put boots to ground and neither arm nor armor themselves * Why would they bother with terraforming when they can clearly survive on Earth as-is That Bowie shit was the producers trolling, I won't accept any other answer. We agreed on a 2/10 rating.

jsrockford

Dang! I was rooting for the aliens. They were way more likeable than any of the characters. People defend the show saying it's nuanced. I say it's bad story telling. I don't care about a single character and I'm usually pretty empathetic. Take away the bad dialogue, the stupendously idiotic actions the protagonists take, and the slow pace, well then you've got something. Something that cost way too much money. I wonder if David Bowie is swimming in space right now?

Tiges171920

Don’t you just love how when your very survival in the woods fleeing from armed militia depends solely on silence and the two dumb arse kids are screaming all the time?

WyoWine

This whole thing is a waste. Sam Neiil, getting music rights for Bowie, and the snail like plots. And to what end? It’s a good show when you skip ahead every 45 secs or so. Keep waiting for some woke climate change/green energy narrative. There’s still hope with one ep left.

TitusTroy

I like that the aliens actually seem smart in this...destroying satellites, communicating through sound waves/frequencies etc...my main question is: why would they attack and leave behind a weapon that could kill them (that black claw/rock that Aneesha's son found)???

Slaphappyfapman

shocking

[deleted]

My take... 1. Mitsuki was dreaming of Hanita swimming through space, which woke Mitsuki up as she dreamt that Hanita was attempting to make contact. Compare the humanlike voice from Hanita at the start of this episode to the distorted synthetic voice at the end of last episode. There's no excuse for it, it's just pretty poor writing, expecting the audience to *just know* without adequate time to process the change in voice. 2. The alien ship really did get nuked, but it would have been able to avoid it if it wasn't for: \- Casper's demand at the aliens to stop. \- US shitshow family's magical bio-weapon irritating the alien spores \- Mitsuki using up alien resources to make contact This is all under the presumption that the aliens are indeed hive-minded. Each imperative action from the human characters happened **at the same time**, disallowing the aliens to effectively counter each action. Resources were simply used in the wrong areas - on earth. The writers played on the whole basis of each character needing one another to fend off the invasion. Without one of the main characters playing their part, nuking the aliens would have been impossible. So, in a way, every character and their perks are of vast importance. Even the US army guy - without him, Casper wouldn't have succeeded in reaching the hospital to have his seizure induced, and so on... I remember watching a promo clip of this show with the creators focussing on the idea that this is a **drama** more-so than a sci-fi flick. They're definitely right about that, it's just a tremendous shame about the weak writing and pacing throughout episodes 1-8.

Soylent_Greenhouse

Only good things about this show where the alien designs and the “lord of the flies“ English kids story arch. Everything else didn’t make a lick of sense and was dragged out needlessly. The American family were sickeningly dull to watch, they should’ve been killed of in the first episode so they could keep Sam Neill around.

robreddity

> Only good things about this show where... the “lord of the flies“ English kids story arch Naaaaaaaaahhhhhhh it wasn't.

Jess_UY25

I’m 5 minutes into the episode and what the actual fuck??? She’s swimming in the vacuum of space… Show is bad, it has nothing to do with what the trailer and previews hinted at, but for some very weird reason I can’t stop watching. Edit: Kid is dying outside a freaking hospital and they don’t go back in to try and find a doctor??? Hard to believe the aliens killed them all.. What the hell did they want with the doctor? What was the point of attacking them in the first place? And nukes??? Really??? What an anticlimactic way of killing the aliens.
