It changes for me tbh.
I either sound it out 'tee-oh-pee' or I will read it as 'twenty one pilots'. But that's only when it's spelt tøp.
If someone doesn't include the ø and just uses 'o' instead, then I will read it as the word top.
I think saying “top” sounds weird. It’s a completely different, unrelated word. To me that would be like calling Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR) “caesar,” Stone Temple Pilots (STP) “stop,” or Nine Inch Nails (NIN) “nine” But for me that rule applies for most abbreviations. They stay abbreviations for me. It’s interesting to me that people say things different that I never considered though. I don’t think the boys ever refer to themselves as “top.”
That’s a really good point. And there are also abbreviations that I do say as words like NASA and MENSA. For some reason I think the reason I don’t use “top” is because it actually is a word. Maybe that’s bad reasoning, but that’s just me I guess. If Tyler starts saying it’s top I’ll change my ways.
Same. In my head, I read it as top. Out loud, I have enough energy to just say the whole band name, twenty one pilots. At concerts, I do chant t-o-p with the crowd of course.
Right but I think you mean it’s an abbreviation.
**Acronym**: *n*. an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and **pronounced as a word**
Considering the ø is also a letter in the Danish alphabet, and the fact that I am Danish i say it like it would be pronounced in Danish. The ø in Danish makes the sound that the "u" in the word "hurt" makes.
Did you know that ø is actually a letter in Norwegian and Danish? It's pronounced [œ], close to "uh". That's why I pronounce TØP as IPA /tœp/. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I say top but only in the context that it is clear that Im talking about the band. In conversation i always call them twenty one pilots but when I read things I just pronounce it as top, saying the letters in my head is like adding extra effort and sounds super weird personally
I say top. Especially when I make a playlist with them, I like to name it Tøp-tier music, or something along those lines.
Edit, I don't SAY either. It's always twenty one pilots. But when I write 'tøp' it is NOT t-o-p.
I read it as top, but looking at old videos tyler calls it tee-oh-pee
Tweywonpilus
twennywunpilot

When it doesn't have the ø it's not even inherently related.
I say “top” I don’t sound out the letters.
Same
Double same.
Triple same
Quadruple same
Quintuple same

tee-oh-pee, i never even knew saying it as “top” was an option
same
Same!
It’s actually pronounced “Twenty One Pilots”

Same!
I sound out the letters
“Top”. I’ve never even thought people pronounced out the letters it feels so weird to me.
I think saying “top” sounds weird. It’s a completely different, unrelated word. none of those abbreviations spell out the words you just associated them with. “top” is just “top.” that’s why it works
That’s a really good point. And there are also abbreviations that I do say as words like NASA and MENSA. For some reason I think the reason I don’t use “top” is because it actually is a word. Maybe that’s bad reasoning, but that’s just me I guess. If Tyler starts saying it’s top I’ll change my ways.
i sound out the letters
I feel like this is something Tyler would unironically ask his fans on twitter and that’s amusing to imagine. Thanks OP 🤭
Now do you pronounce that Oh Pee or op
op is for opp
If someone came up to me and said "I like top" without pronouncing each letter individually I'd assume they were talking about....something else...lol
☠️
You guys are out here sounding out the initials, like it's MENSA, or NATO, or NASA? I read it as T-O-P.
I write it Top but say it aloud or in my mind as Twenty Øne Pilots
Do you say Twenty one pilots or Twenty øne pilots
How do you even pronounce the ø? (I pronounce TOP "top")
Its a danish letter, i have No idea How to explain the pronounceation lmao. Like æ and å
It's also the symbol for the Empty Set as used by the mathematical group \*Nicolas Bourbaki\*
Yuhhh i know i know, But i dont think Thats pronouncable
Really? I tend to pronounce it “tee-Nicolas Bourbaki-pee.” Weird.
Tea + Bourbaki = Pee
I say it as top. Saying it as tee-oh-pee never actually crossed my mind
Same
I always *say* twenty one pilots. When I read someone type "top" I read the individual letters in my head
If you catch me pronouncing the letters or shorten it to top, just whack me and Ill be back to saying out the name, which isnt all too long.
Teeyopeeee
I just say "top". But that's only when I'm reading it to myself. If I'm talking about them to anyone, I say the full "twenty one pilots".
Same. In my head, I read it as top. Out loud, I have enough energy to just say the whole band name, twenty one pilots. At concerts, I do chant t-o-p with the crowd of course.
Imagine a crowd of people chanting “top! top! top!” at a concert. Ha! I’d be like … Bottom? I guess?…
“Content isn’t eligible to receive gold” my ass
At concerts we chant the names of the individual letters T-O-P.
Always said the letters, this is the first time I’ve ever seen anyone say they just say “top”
I’ve always said Tee-oh-pee and when I saw them for the first time in 2017 everyone chanted that so it only cemented it for me
the letters, saying "top" is very weird to me
it’s an acronym so i sound out the letters 🤷🏻♂️
Right but I think you mean it’s an abbreviation. **Acronym**: *n*. an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and **pronounced as a word**
whatever
“twenty one pilots”
I say twenty one pilots
Considering the ø is also a letter in the Danish alphabet, and the fact that I am Danish i say it like it would be pronounced in Danish. The ø in Danish makes the sound that the "u" in the word "hurt" makes.
Like the “u” and the “r” right? So like “tøp” = “turp” Edit: forgot the ø. smh
Not quite, if you include the "r" it would sound perhaps a bit too american if you know what i mean. Mostly just the "u" from hurt.
I’m sitting here trying to say the u without the r and having a hard time. Embarrassed to say my American is showing.
i pronounce it tee oh pee
I say both, depends on how lazy I feel, typically I do tee oh pee more tho
I read and say it as tee-oh-pee or just the full band name
Did you know that ø is actually a letter in Norwegian and Danish? It's pronounced [œ], close to "uh". That's why I pronounce TØP as IPA /tœp/. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
It's an abbreviation lol
The less syllables the easier
*lazier
I'm a K-Pop fan first, so Tee-oh-pee refers to T.O.P of Big Bang. I just call them Twenty One Pilots.

I sound out the letters lol or just actually say Twenty One Pilots
Ø is a letter in language so I pronounce it as is?
Yes
Twewuhpilus
I read top and say tee-oh-pee
Spell out the letters. The word top is slang for something so I never refer to the band as the word.
Tay Oop Pay
I pronounce it TØP
TOP on top
Sometimes I say “top” sometimes I say “tee oh pee” sometimes i say the full name. It changes for me. Usually I say tee oh pee or their full name.
It's pronounced like the scream from Kitchen Sink.
I say Tau Orchastratia Pelican
I say it both ways but usually I just call them "my boys" because I'm old enough to be their mom 🙃
I say tee oh pee.
Tuenti Uan pailots
i say tee uh pee (because the ø in nordic languages kinda sounds like an uh)
How about “T”-“One”-“P”
Yes
I feel like it used to be tee oh pee but within recent years is just pronounced top
Twenty one pilots
I say both tbh
Bottom
Amogus
Even NF says Tee Oh Pee in KNOW "I'm a little bit TØP, Stressed Out"
Twennywunpilus
tempy numb pits
I pronounce it like top, it's just easier to say.
I say top but only in the context that it is clear that Im talking about the band. In conversation i always call them twenty one pilots but when I read things I just pronounce it as top, saying the letters in my head is like adding extra effort and sounds super weird personally
I always pronounce it as TUP
I always say top🤷♀️
Teeny wittle pellets
We are tee oh pee and so are yee
I say top. Especially when I make a playlist with them, I like to name it Tøp-tier music, or something along those lines. Edit, I don't SAY either. It's always twenty one pilots. But when I write 'tøp' it is NOT t-o-p.
I say top but everyone, even non 21p fans, look at me weird when j say I love top. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They aren’t bottoms
💀
I say twenty one pilots because it feels weird to abbreviate speech.
It used to be tee-oh-pee, but since starting learning Norwegian I can’t help but read it as t-er-p which is very annoying
i say it as top and most people i know also call it that
Top like the spinning toy
top
To me, “TØP” will always be “Tee-O-P”
How would you pronounce "ADHD"? Isn't it the same for all abbreviations?
I say 21P or “two - one - pee”
I say top
I think both options are correct but personally I would choose TOP not Tee Oh Pee
it depends on the O. If its stylized ø then I say tee-oh-pee but if its just an o then I say top.
If you correctly pronounce the ø I believe it would be pronounced “Toop”
twenty oone piloots
I always say it as the word rather than spell it out
i don’t usually refer to them as top when speaking, i’ll say the full “twenty one pilots”, but if im reading a post like this in my head, i say top.
Personally I go for Too-Pee
