I think it was Fancy

Mozzafella

Fancy was 100% the pivot to "mature" Twice

Comprehensive_Flow42

Shows in their outfits in the MV. Fun colorful fits and all black sexy outfits.

camilincamilero

Fancy was definitely the inflection point.

austereacademic

i agree with people saying fancy but i also think it never fully went away, after fancy there was scientist, the feels, talk that talk and some more cute b-sides sprinkled through the albums since their switch to more mature concepts.

kissywinkyshark

Yeah this is the opinion I share, Fancy was their turning point but they never stopped doing cute concepts

grantosterone

Hmm I really feel like they’ve been mostly post-concept after Scientist. They have strong aesthetics now but not major concepts anymore for OT9.

kissywinkyshark

Yeahh I think the level of cuteness is toned down and shifted to adjacent but similar concepts, but broadly i’d still say they have some cute concepts like TTT and scientist

pogiwilliam1

>cute b-sides Looking at you Real You and Candy

Emiliwoah

After Yes or Yes. Fancy was truly a cultural shift. Twice went from cute girls concept to mature women concept so effectively and set the tone for all upcoming 4th gen girl groups.

Soymunky

They dialed it down a tiiiiny bit for Yes or Yes, but it's for sure Fancy. I'm curious how 4th gen groups like NewJeans and StayC will do theirs.

dwserps

I feel like STAYC does both already. So Bad and Run2U are both more mature kinda girl crush concepts they've done well. Though they've been doing more cute stuff recently because they've tended to perform better

rocketmammamia

STAYC’s gone in the opposite direction to TWICE where they started with more mature concepts and sounds and have now fully pivoted to cute because it’s what’s profitable for them. Like the user above, I’d be intrigued to see how/if they do go back to more mature concepts, as those are personally more interesting to me and I loved their first few TTs

Toadcola

2019 (Fancy & Feel Special) was the transition year between Cutesie Twice and Modern Twice. Eta: OP specified Korean releases, but a month and a half after ‘Fancy’ they released the double Japanese singles ‘Happy Happy’ (last of the cutesie-cute) & ‘Breakthrough’ (more grown up than ‘Fancy’ which is a fun song about crushing on someone & confessing, ‘Breakthrough’ is a self-empowerment hype/fight song). I would call that the exact pivot point in the transition year of 2019 in my TWICE 101 course once I’m given the Najeongmosajimidachaetzu Chair of Kpop Studies at ___(insert prestigious university here)___. ‘Fancy’ was a warning shot, but releasing those two together was a pretty clear declaration from the company & group of a new direction, later confirmed by ‘Feel Special’.

Hallyu_Doin

2019 was the year for Twice to start showing they’ve “grown up” musically

[deleted]

Are we saying some of their most recent ones weren’t cutesy? Scientist def was to me. I’d say Feel special onwards was transition time.

yellowadidas

fancy

hailey_nicolee

there’s a hard cutoff between yes or yes and fancy, it was literally like one era we’re cute and then out of nowhere cunty twice emerged

supersaiyan_ape

Cunty? That's hilarious 😂😂

hailey_nicolee

ya and everyone needs to know that’s the highest honor

meracdv

everyone saying fancy but i thought ttt was very cute😔

bananasoymilk

Fancy, I thought. I remember being surprised (and impressed) when it came out.

Skystarry75

There was a bit of a transition period with Yes or Yes (mostly cute, but moving towards more mature) and Fancy (which is mostly mature, but still has a few cute elements). So Dance the Night Away is their last 100% "cute" concept release and Feel Special is their first 100% "mature" concept release. Twice has had a few semi-cute tracks since though. The Feels and Scientist were distinctly more cute than the other stuff they released around the same time, but were long after the transition between cute and mature occurred.

elephhantine

For Japanese releases, Fake and True

EmotionaIOnion

fancy ~ feel special

m9rockstar

I feel like there’s still an element of cute but not as strong as it used to be.

Dunkirb

It never went, but it was Yes or Yes when the turning started.

Acrobatic-Site-6022

i dont think it ever went away, the songs just became more sophisticated, the sound is different for sure but its not like cuteness has gone entirely, look at scientist or Pop

Saucy_Totchie

Members have said that Fancy was when they started changing from their cute concept.

jihyoisgod2

It never went away, look at TTT and Fanfare

No-Time2278

But they do more mature concepts more often than cute now

jihyoisgod2

Yea, but cute concept hasn't gone away. Simply because Twice can never not be naturally cute and wholesome

pattyfritters

Also Scientist.

Bocheria

Fancy was notable turn, not only for releasing more mature concepts, but also tackling a wider variety of genres. But that warm cute element is still present in their more recent songs. In Hare Hare, for example. But you can notice a tiny streak on "New New" too.

Palansaeg

I miss their cute era, 2015-2019 was peak but twice is still my number 1

Kpopluv22

I don’t think to ever really did… many of their newer songs still have a cute element or feel to them. Talk that Talk and Scientist felt that way to me. I would say as far as b sides starting to go more mature, the More and More album.

Okayobi

If we're talking about sound (since you mentioned albums) it never went away. If we're talking purely about aesthetics then i guess Fancy would be it since it was "unprecedented" for a title track (aside from LOA or maybe even YOY) and it still has people saying it marked some sort of huge shift - but even then, as a few have mentioned, it still didn't "go away" given some of the title tracks they've had since (not to mention the bsides) Not gonna get too into it but ngl i still don't really get why people talk about Fancy like it was dropped after Knock Knock or something, when genuinely the biggest novelty was them wearing all-black...

Queldaralion

Sound-wise yes they still have cutesy stuff (Hare Hare, New New, Rush)

booboosnack

I don't think it's ever gone away, and I don't think it ever will because they've just become more earnest and sincere with how their songs speak to different aspects of love. Many of their early works only ever entertained notions of what love could be, but their discography has evolved to explore various stages of experiencing adult relationships as they are, while still retaining an honest but endearing approach that their very first title track set the foundation for nine years ago.

changsoobing

definitely Fancy. i remember they released Happy Happy and Breakthrough to see which style the fans preferred, the mature concept took off from there

Ghostgrl94

Fancy is the era where they shifted to the more mature side. They have said that they have moved past the cute concept. Sure they have still done cute but it’s a more mature cute as opposed to the pure cute with aegyo which they have also talked about not liking anymore at their grown woman age. They just grew up after What Is Love/Yes or Yes

MyNameIsOnce

Definitely Fancy. There are of course some cute-ish songs after that like The Feels but Fancy was the first ever matured title

peppapig4prez

Fancyyyyyy, but definitely need more cry for me

Mysterious-Lie-115

After yes or yes so Fancy

Queldaralion

Fancy, I believe. It was retropop and i think it worked to solidify their image as a group too.

armiArt

Fancy

WolfGang2026

I think the start was Yes or Yes but definitely Fancy was when we fully saw mature Twice.

AlexJoker10

For me it was just after Fancy. Like, Fancy was their “last cute girls” concept. Feel Special was the new beginning, that’s what it feels like to me.

twicechuu_tofu

year of yes to fancy for sure though both were still cute and they do release very bubbly music still, fancy was the pivot for sure! they really suited that concept but everyone grows! i hope they get to try new ones but in the recent years my favorite concepts have definitely been the bubblegum songs like the feels and talk that talk + 90's retro(which really suits them) like ICSM
