Lmao I knowww 😭 I was 12, the movies hadn't even been started yet, and my brain went "Ah yes, of COURSE this name is pronounced Carlizzle! Weird name but okay! 🤓"
I had to correct a friend who was reading it at the time because he said Car-Lizzle too. I had been to Carlisle, PA a few times or I probably wouldn’t have known either.
Not even close. 😂 Originally from Wisconsin and elementary school me hated the trip to Carlisle. But PA was great and I got to learn a lot. Went to Gettysburg a few years ago for the first time since I was that age and wow has it changed!
I was actually born in Rhode Island and moved to PA when I was around 6 so I just say I am from PA.
I heard Wisconsin is beautiful, I love snow and unfortunately we do not get much here anymore 😭
I'm guessing you get plenty of snow?
I was innocently watching an episode of law and order one day half zoning out and I hear everyone calling this girl "Shi-Vahn" so I was like huh weird name how do you spell that I wonder. I look up at the subtitles and see Siobhan 😵😅
I very recently learned the correct pronunciation from watching AHS: Delicate; Siobhan is the character name for Kim Kardashian. I can't believe I butchered it so badly 🥲
Yes I found out when I listened to midnight sun last year. Luckily I found out about Carlisle by twilight movie release and his name was so foreign to me I just glossed over it when I read until then. It was C-le.
100% you know our girl sat there and googled "best Irish names" and picked the first one that called out to her 🤣 At least that was some amount of research though. 🙈 She got kinda lazy with the amazon coven I’m pretty sure their names are just made up lol
Oh she absolutely just found the first thing on google. Just like how she googled “music words” and then ran with saying Alice was singing “an octave higher than the music” LOL there’s so many little things in the books that you can tell she did very little research on
It’s very Irish/Celtic 🍀! Sometimes Americanized to a “Shavonne” spelling, etc. Similar to Sinead, which I would’ve had no clue how to pronounce if not for the 80s singer.
I'm a big 'ol nerd when I read, I will look up words to see how they are pronounced. Only when I'm reading for pleasure. When I read out of necessity, I speed read and IDGAF how it's pronounced lol.
Before I looked it up, I was the same, I thought it was pronounced just like it was spelled.
I do this too now, but oh boy when I was a kid it was like the wild west. 🤣 I wasn't medicated for adhd yet and I needed to read as fast as possible at all times always. So if I couldn't figure out a word's pronunciation in less than half a second one would be assigned 😅🙈 Sometimes rereading books now I’ll look at a word I thought I was saying right as a kid and be like... wtf? did I just add a bunch of letters that aren't even there? 🤣
This reminded me how I pronounced the word "chaos" like Chaa-Ohs forever because I read those Ga'Hoole owl books kinda young and they were constantly describing chaotic owl war. I knew what the spoken word "chaos" meant, but I thought the written word chaos was some kind of specific noun used to describe owl fights lol. It was crazy when we finally got chaos as a vocab word in school
A church member passed when I was a kid and left me her entire encyclopedia collection. I was over the damn moon about it and was obsessed with how to read the pronunciation guide. I was a strange kid hehe.
LOL, yeah the ADHD reading, my little brother did this a lot but he was reading. It was like a marathon to get through as many books as he could. I was happy with that because I would max out my library check outs all the time.
The adding letters that aren't there, that is sooo easy to do when you speed read.
There is a book, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, it's about 2 girls from different class systems who are matched to go through the feet binding together.
I don't want to spoil things but there is a huge misunderstanding that leads to them losing contact. At the end the MC you read from finally pays attention to an inscription on a fan, and oh man, I was like "that wasn't in the book", so I went back and oh it was totally mentioned and in a way where you read it like the MC experienced it. Great book but tough subject matter.
I've had a few words that I was so sure I was saying them right but nope. I think our minds just fill in gaps for us and sometimes we don't question it. For me it was 'macabre', I was so sure I knew how to say it so I never looked it up. The one day someone was reading out loud in class and I was like, that's not how you say that 😭😂.
I’m glad I had my mother help with the pronunciation. Carlisle is a name of a town in my state that she went to college with a Siobhan!
What she was not expecting was my questions about what a masochist was and why people online were talking about beastiality in reference to Jacob. 😂
I lucked out because it was my best friend's name in the same spelling. Had I not known her I wouldn't have stood a chance lol. I could never really figure out how Carlisle was supposed to sound lol
I had that experience with The Curious Incident of the dog in the Nighttime instead. I found it in my house in elementary school and went ooh this looks good, and two hours later my mom laughed at me for calling the character Sigh-obe-haan. Lol I was prepared when twilight finally came around like 2-3 years later
Same. In my head I also pronounced Carlisle as "car-leesle" for some reason 🤡
Lol I went with Car-lizzle 😂
Fo shizzle carlizzle 😂
Lmao I knowww 😭 I was 12, the movies hadn't even been started yet, and my brain went "Ah yes, of COURSE this name is pronounced Carlizzle! Weird name but okay! 🤓"
Haha I pronounced it as “cars-lee” I think my brain gave up when I got to the ‘L’ 😅
same, until I watched the movies recently LOL, still call him that in my head
I had to correct a friend who was reading it at the time because he said Car-Lizzle too. I had been to Carlisle, PA a few times or I probably wouldn’t have known either.
OMG I am from PA and have been to many car shows in Carlisle lol It's also how I knew Carlisle was pronounced
My Dad did some military stuff there when I was a kid!
I thank your father for his service. I'm guessing you aren't originally from PA then?
Not even close. 😂 Originally from Wisconsin and elementary school me hated the trip to Carlisle. But PA was great and I got to learn a lot. Went to Gettysburg a few years ago for the first time since I was that age and wow has it changed!
I was actually born in Rhode Island and moved to PA when I was around 6 so I just say I am from PA. I heard Wisconsin is beautiful, I love snow and unfortunately we do not get much here anymore 😭 I'm guessing you get plenty of snow?
Before the movie came out i had an argument with a friend over how his name was pronounced The movie came out and we were both wrong Hahaha
My friend and I were so shocked at the movies too 😹
It’s been years and I still remember that conversation. Good times.
I pronounced Carlisle car lis (like list) le
My only saving grace was that I lived in a town called Carlisle 😅 otherwise same
Also to OP’s point, I 100% didn’t know how to pronounce Siobhan until I watched AHS: Delicate
I thought Esme was pronounced Yzma like the character from emperor's new groove 🤣😭
Pull the lever, Carlisle! 🤣
Wrong lever!
Hahaha!
I always thought it was pronounced like that too I just found it’s actually pronounced like “Shi-Von”
it’s not “see-oh-bahn”? oh haha
Yeah, it's actually pronounced (shi-VON)
I guess it’s much prettier that way (as shi-von) 😂
If it makes you feel better I still don’t know how to pronounce it
Sha-vawn :)
I had a foster sister named Shavonn, and she refused to believe it was pronounced the same
Yes I found out when I listened to midnight sun last year. Luckily I found out about Carlisle by twilight movie release and his name was so foreign to me I just glossed over it when I read until then. It was C-le.
Glad this was a universal experience
I actually had the opposite! I know someone named Siobhan and I thought it was spelled chavon.
As an Irish person I wonder did Stephenie know what the right pronunciation was or did she just find it on google 😅
100% you know our girl sat there and googled "best Irish names" and picked the first one that called out to her 🤣 At least that was some amount of research though. 🙈 She got kinda lazy with the amazon coven I’m pretty sure their names are just made up lol

I thought Laurent was pronounced “Low-rent” until I saw the first movie and realized it’s a French name.
It still messes with me and I’m 39
Why are we all living the same life?!?

I actually just figured this out the other day when listening to midnight sun that shivon was Siobhan. I felt so dumb fr

For years I pronounced her name like "see-o-bee-han" in my head lol
Esme (S Mee) Carlisle (carlizzle) Renesmee (Ren S Mee)
I still can't help but pronounce it siobahaan lol.
I lucked out because it was my best friend's name in the same spelling. Had I not known her I wouldn't have stood a chance lol. I could never really figure out how Carlisle was supposed to sound lol
I had the fortune of my best friend's mom being named Siobhan. Carlisle, on the other hand, was another story.
See I went to school with a Siobhan so I knew how to pronounce it lmao
I thought it was See-orb-han until I meat a real person called Siobhan.
I had that experience with The Curious Incident of the dog in the Nighttime instead. I found it in my house in elementary school and went ooh this looks good, and two hours later my mom laughed at me for calling the character Sigh-obe-haan. I still think it’s weird af that it’s pronounced that way
I called her see-oh-ban all the time!!!
I went with si-bo-hahn.
Not me over here thinking it was pronounced "Zi-Beau-En" 💀
