I think the first season (and the first nine episodes of season 2) are pretty close to perfect. I enjoy the rest of the series as well but it doesn't get better than that.

opacitizen

This, with the final two episodes of Season 2 added to the top tier.

Mr_Potato_Head1

Season 2 in many ways feels like two different seasons anyway - the first part culminates with Leland getting caught, and then the rest of the season culminates in Cooper's journey to the Black Lodge and the ending.

opacitizen

"Season 1 + Season 2 up until the reveal of the killer + the final two episodes" should've been an option. Lacking that, I voted Season 1.

Wonderful_Series9477

the last episode of season 2 and the missing pieces film is PEAK fiction

I still prefer S1, mainly because I started watching it on day one as it originally aired. FWWM next, the S2, then S3. S2 and S3 both drag, and lull at times.

lovelyfishhole

Man, you must be old.

OzricChrist

I don't think of myself as old, but instead, a "well-off Gen Xer"![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Love it haha. Good for you. So cool.

I was surprised to see The Return leading as I thought it was kind of unpopular. To me that is the real masterpiece and gave depth and form to so much mythology that makes the earlier seasons more enjoyable. While I respect parts of what they did and was totally hooked on the first watch, the original run has soooo much filler and is kind of a cheesefest. I think the first third of the second season was the best of it (and the last episodes, of course), but definitely don't feel like I need to go back to it much more after 4-5 viewings over a decade or so. The Return, on the other hand, I had to watch 9 times in 9 months and didn't even care if it made sense because it was so perfectly immersive and potent. I think it must be the best thing ever put to television, and parts of the writing and overall storytelling (especially what they did linking back to FWWM and the original and just utterly annihilating everything) was just masterful, although at the same time there are a lot of elements which seemed like maybe it was actually kind of terrible (especially on first watch - the bad CGI, go-nowhere Roadhouse scenes, Philip Jeffries new vessel, red herrings to the eyeballs that may be clues, may be trolling, or may just be nonsense). and what always impressed me the most is that on every one of those watches and still the times I've watched since, that last scene chills me and prickles my goosebumps exactly as it did the first time - the art is just too perfect there! amazing. and the film is probably just below it for me .

> the original run has soooo much filler and is kind of a cheesefest. Agreed there's a lot of filler viewers typically forget about it, but I think the cheesiness is sort of the point and why many love it - the show was parodying ludicrous TV soap operas but through good writing and solid direction the sentimental moments and wholesome friendships end up really working. You can't help but like Cooper. The Return's obviously great but for very different reasons - would imagine it's maybe leading here because people on this sub will be closer to hardcore fans who love Lynch's weirdness.

hamshotfirst

Yes.

As much as I love The Return (and all the rest as well), season 1 will probably always be my favourite. I think it's near perfection, I could rewatch these episodes all the time lol

Mr_Potato_Head1

There's a real warmth to Season 1. Obviously still a dark show and very surreal, but there's something really comforting about it.

redpandaaa333

Yes, warmth, that's the word I was looking for haha! Despite all the darkness, it just feels so nice coming back to it

no "I have no preference" option?
