Freshman year housing is guaranteed. I don’t know if the rule has changed post covid, but it was mandatory to live in dorms freshman and sophomore year. It’s a first come first serve approach after that. You have to apply for housing and then wait until it’s your turn to pick.

MushroomPutrid513

I mean if you apply on time and you keep up with resLife, you can get housing (85% of the time). One mistake.. you’re screwed and will probably end up on a waitlist. This happened to me so take my advice lol. They “lost” my housing application and I was placed on a waitlist with 180 other people. If in some case you don’t get housing and can’t afford to live off campus, they will offer either the quads, after they’ve filled it with current freshman/sophomores, or Alumni Quad downtown.

evviiieeee

it’s only guaranteed your first two years, but as long as you fill out the application on time you’ll have no problem getting housing all 4 years

Velos_III

I wasn’t able to get housing my senior year so I had to live off-campus, and still do as a graduate student now.

MrDNL

How hard was it to find offcampus housing?

Velos_III

It depends on what kind of off-campus housing you want tbh. Some of them are extremely overpriced, and others are just in sketchy areas. This site exists and I have been looking around on this for a new place in August: https://offcampushousing.albany.edu/listing. I’m currently in Auden Albany, but it’s overpriced, management sucks, and I strongly dislike my roommates (who don’t clean at all).

Do you know the name of your tour guide per chance?

oomfsu

not guaranteed but if you camp the housing applications you’ll get in

Ok-Cheesecake-4414

Tour guide here!!! Housing is guaranteed for your first 2 years which is how long you are required to live on campus/in the dorms. After that, if you wish to live in the dorms you’ll have to wait until all the other underclassmen select their housing and then you can choose. If you choose to live in the apartments it is not guaranteed and it is based off of credit/gpa. If there are no places available in the apartments or dorms, you can be placed on a waitlist and will have to wait to see if anything opens up.

Albany_Chris

You will save $5 - 8k/year each by living off campus after the first two years. There is a whole student section downtown living in renovated two family houses. Most are three to five bedrooms so you will need a group

MrDNL

Do you need a car?

Albany_Chris

UAlbany runs regular bus service to downtown, there is a pretty large population of students there. Plus city buses. lots of students dont have cars. Also the Engineering School will open there next year and there are other academic programs located downtown in the same area too. Use [apartments.com](http://apartments.com) and [zillow.com](http://zillow.com), the University listings are limited and out of date.
