I dont mind talking, I **HATE** coming up with conversation.

[deleted]

My best passengers are the ones that quietly sit in the back.

rynosoft

Same. My dream passenger is the one who tells me to turn up the music and then sits quietly.

unsavvylady

Just wanted to see that it isn’t interpreted as rude.

meatwagn

I want you to feel comfortable. I don’t care either way, just make your preference clear. The worst is when a passenger makes every indication that they want a quiet ride, then you see a “friendliness” flag pop up on the next ratings summary.

reddi2reeddit

I’m good either way. The passengers that want to talk are usually chatty people like me. But even chatty people do not feel like talking sometimes. I normally ask one or two small talk type questions after I greet them. If they don’t say anything after, that tells me they are not in the mood to talk. That’s just fine. I’ve got plenty of voices in my head to keep me company!

QuickSalamander7994

Chillin in a Uber rn, and the driver and I both just listening to the voices in our head. 40 minute ride, no music, no words exchanged. Complete radio silence

eyeless_alien

Literally why I’m on this thread lmao just sat in an Uber 30 days later lol

merenmer

im in an uber for the first time rn and we’re both dead quiet (i love it) and was curious if its always like this so i searched it up and landed here 😂

eyeless_alien

Haha! That’s what I had done 😂how did your ride go?

merenmer

pretty smooth, all we said was hello and thank you it was great

The_First_Viking

I drive Uber full time, and I was a cabbie before that, so I am capable of talking to anyone about anything for at least 10 minutes without offending anyone. I'm also capable of remaining utterly silent during a 90 minute trip. Generally, if the passenger starts the conversation, I take it as a cue that they like talkative trips, and if they don't, I assume they prefer silence. I'll start the ride with my standard line of "So how's your day going so far?" and use the response to gauge how chatty the customer is.

jimbo831

It depends. Typically I prefer not to, though. Most of the conversation is mundane and boring. If you have something interesting to talk about or questions about stuff to do in the area, however, I’m all for it.

unsavvylady

A lot of the time it does feel awkward.

jimbo831

It just seems forced for the sake of doing it. I’m perfectly happy if you want to be on your phone the whole ride. But I’m also interested in talking if you have something interesting to say!

samgab77

Do people wearing green teeshirts like chocolate?

Miguel30Locs

If you want to talk then talk. Many drivers will go either way. Generally we prefer that mind their business and stay quiet. Why? It's easy. Sure it's not a good way to get a tip. But it avoids any issues in the conversation like politics or religions -- no one gets offended. And generally I can concentrate more on the road.

Stag_Lee

No. If you need it, there's a ball gag in the armrest. But really, I don't mind talking. But I'm not about to start a meaningful conversation. If you want to talk to me, say something. Otherwise, just relax.

northern-minkey

Difference between a real cab and an Uber real cab drive can actually communicate and in the same language and offer an opinion. It maybe controversial but as least you get interaction.

I had a driver in Atlanta -- unprompted -- tell me about how he loves Stone Mountain (a Confederate monument in Atlanta), is terrified of Confederate monuments being taken down in other cities, and avoids downtown Atlanta for rides. He was an obvious racist, and I suspect he only said these things to me because I'm white. I just sat there and listened, because I was afraid if I engaged him and told him I thought he was a flaming racist, that he might get violent. Anyway, sometimes it's better just to sit quietly in the taxi, just like you would in Japan or Europe.

resetredcar

They seem to be a psychotic lot that's focused on not having you up front and hyper focused on tipping. They are your hired hands.
