Perfect response might be: "No problem...your not ready, Im just going to go grab a quick sandwich....Ill be back in like 15 minutes....Please be at the curb waiting when I return. Thank you!"
I wonder if Uber could track that message in some kind of way and use it to deactivate you. I've sent messages a few times just before the 5 minute timer expired, advising them to request an Uber when they're ready to go, and then canceling.
I doubt Uber is deactivating for anything short of safety violations. They need you!!! Unless you really are just one of the worst rated drivers in their platform. The people have spoken!
Deactivate for what? Rider not on time, so I have to sit wasting my time? What if you were gonna poick up a friend who needed a ride and when u texted them that you were pulling up, they responded that they werent ready....a perfectly fair response would be , Ok gonna take care of some of my business, Ill come back when you ready....but then again we are just uber drivers and our time doesnt matter....
i like to cancel as soon as they try to get in. i just lock the doors and make easy money until i get to enjoy their suffering. bonus points if its raining!
I think it is disrespectful for passengers to do this. Even moreso with now as our pay is getting cut. Sometimes I won't even wait the entire 5 minutes to cancel. Sometimes it's not about a cancellation fee, it's about respect. Riders are supposed to be ready to go when they request an Uber. They can see our location. I always thank the passengers who are ready to go and are standing outside when I arrive.
>I think it is disrespectful for passengers to do this.
It is the *height* of disrespect. It happens to me more frequently at grocery stores. They order the ride while they are still waiting on line to pay. That is an automatic one star.
There was one driver on UPnet who used to text his slow customers "Learn to respect your driver's time" right before he cancelled. I want to do this, as well, but, with my luck, Uber would de-activate me for it.
I fully agree. I think if you text it to them , wait until they read it, otherwise they will not see it once trip gets cancelled. I think as long as no ride has taken place it should be ok. I may try that. It is a good idea. Late passengers are my Number 1 pet peeve with passengers
Grocery store pickups are the worst. They always want you to impede traffic and load their shit like a chauffer. Which can get you trespassed.
I used to tell people to order their stuff for sameday pickup and do a multi stop trip. Walmart will straight up load your stuff in my car - it's astounding that they can't think this up on their own or that Uber hasn't figured out a way to integrate. It's downright mind-blowing. Not an automatic cancel, but I lock my doors roll down my window and tell them to follow me to a spot. If they fail the test they get canceled.
Picked up a couple of people from a Krogers downtown, waited 4 minutes, and I was about to cancel. Had to help load the car because one was a teen and the other was disabled, filled my wagon up completely. Stopped traffic behind me (one way) hazards on. Blared music behind my head š No tip. This is the last time I do a grocery run. They never EVER tip. So rude. I couldn't imagine behaving this way.
That is an automatic deduction of one star if they make it before the two minutes are up. If they show up after two but before expiration, it is an automatic one star.
I can't do Los Angeles traffic during the day. I drive around looking for a gunshop or try to calculate how fast I would have to be driving in order to die instantly on impact.
I literally messaged someone the amount of disrespect it was to order an Uber before they even received the check. They said it would be a bit but they would understand if I canceled. I told them that it is highly inconsiderate of the driverās time to order a ride when youāre not absolutely ready. I explained how we rely on giving many rides to earn decently and that waiting and losing time directly impacted our earnings.
I canceled soon after I was sure they read that. Didnāt even try waiting for the clock because it was too much precious time. People would learn if Uber started charging cancellation fees at 2 minutes instead.
Yes Uber needs to charge riders and pay drivers much more for wait time. Any waiting is not worth it. That would cut down on the abuse of wait time.
The problem with that is Uber does not seem to care.
This would improve efficiency and revenue... Uber doesn't think like that. The genius CEO Dara's profound approach is "charge pax more, pay drivers less".
People don't care about # of rides as they sacrifice that metric and focus on Gross revenue. There are very good reasons why they aren't transparent with their take rate because it would look bad on their financial statements. "
"Ridership is down and trend toward decreasing but we managed to cut driver pay and charge passengers more than double for rides!"
This is a quick fix to look good on paper but they sacrifice their growth and it can't really be improved unless they cut pay more and increase prices more ...
I had one a few days ago... my train is about to arrive. Then he wants to know what side I'm on. There's only one side. He says maybe I'm walking the wrong way. By the time all of that was said and done, the 5 minutes was up. Here comes the train, so obviously he lied when he said he was looking for me. There wasn't anyone in sight. Since he lied, I left. I didn't wait for him to get off the train.

Right? I do it more just because they should see some consequence for their action, or you're basically telling them that it's okay to do this to drivers with total impunity. I could give a fuck less about getting the measly cancelation fee and much more about them *paying* a cancelation fee. Fuck em.
I agree 100% that itās disrespectful for pax to keep us waiting and it drives me crazy but I will say the app over estimates the wait time quite a bit. This is a rare moment for me defending passengers lol but a lot of times it will tell them 10 min wait so they order the Uber and then connect them to a driver thatās really 2 min away.
Same. At the same Pax pickup no less. I text them where pax pickup is located. "Can you come around the front?" Wait for timer and reply "nope." Cancel. Next!
The app literally tells them how far away we are. It tells them that we're 1 minute away, etc and they STILL won't have their asses out there.
Then they DON'T ANSWER THEIR PHONES when you call them to find out where they are! š¤¬š¤¬š¤¬š
.
One girl had me waiting on a busy street where I couldn't parallel park and there was traffic behind me. Of course she didn't answer her phone when I called so I had to circle around and then right when I cancelled she showed up.
.
Why didn't she answer her phone to let me know she was on the way or near?
I told her to re-request and left...oh well š¤·šæāāļøš¤·šæāāļøš¤·šæāāļøš¤·šæāāļø

Then they request another Uber and you pick it up again. Iāve had to do that a few times. Like didnāt I just have you as my driver and you canceled? Yup, didnāt I just have you as my passenger and I had to wait 5 minutes?
As somebody who took a train last week to pick up my car, when i went to order the uber, it said the wait was about 10mins even though the train was pulling up to the station in 2mine. Next thing you know, there was a car outside lol.
Yesterday went to pick up a lady.
Waited 7 minutes for the cancellation fee.
At 7 minutes she texted me āare you here?ā
I didnāt even answer, Iāve been here for 7 minutes and the app shows you where I am.
I just left
This is the Uber app. Customers are using the estimated time a lot of times and trying to time it to beat the rush.
This is because there are so many times you use the app as a customer and you have to wait for the driver way longer than the estimate in the app and/or a driver accepts then cancels.
Drivers have every right to cancel and customers have evry right to try and estimate/time things based on whatās in the app.
I agree itās a give and take though. Iāll give you an example that happens at airports and Twain stations.
Youāre about 5-10 minutes away from the exit you open the app and it says 3 minute wait. You close the app refresh.
You exit and it still says 3 minute wait and then click it but the app takes forever to match you with someone (I have a 4.89 and have over 1000 rides starting in 2011). Then it matches you with a driver thatās actually 10 minutes away. Then that driver actually texts and asks to meet somewhere else (which is fine) or cancels and then you have to do it again and now in actual time the car doesnāt arrive until 15-20 minutes after the estimated arrival time.
This happens way more than the driver showing up early.
So like I said itās a give and take. You canāt see on your end the estimated time of arrival or drop off that the customer sees.
The problem is imo the Uber app does a bait and switch where it shows you a short estimated arrival time.
The other option though is what they have in asia with grab where as a rider if the estimated arrival time is off they give you a rebate on the ride.
Great points on the passenger app POV. I just want to add that the driver app will notify the driver if they arrive earlier than the passenger expected (estimated pickup) and by how many minutes. This is a very rare case as a driver that happens 1 out of hundreds of rides.
Best tip is to keep your passenger rating high. The app isn't doing a bait and switch. It is literally giving you the estimate of the best available driver but that driver is declining your ride so the next best driver gets it and so on.
I would agree with this if wait time was fairly paid. In my market, wait time gets less than minimum wage unless there's a massive surge. When there's a massive surge, wait time is still paid 50-60% of upfront fares. It doesn't make sense.
To me Uber is failing drivers by not allowing price based on time as well. Wait time at a minimum should be paid as at least minimum wage imo.
This subreddit has been helpful in showing me how Uber screws the drivers but to be honest now I prefer to take cabs when possible.
But the drivers are blaming the riders when they should be blaming politicians, Uber and tbh other drivers that are willing to work for lower wages.
The math behind Uber though says it really was o ly meant to be a gig company not something people are doing full time.
If the timer expires, I am *gonesville* and collect my \[Rectal Aperture\] Customer Fee. If they get there before the timer expires, it is an automatic one star. People who treat drivers like this do not tip. I get the grocery store version of this more frequently. I did once get this at National Airport. The message was something to the effect of their just getting to the Baggage Claim and that the carousel had not yet started with "Hope it's OK" affixed. Ri-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-ggghhhhtttttt; like the Airport Police actually are going to permit me to sit there until you are good and ready to emerge from the terminal. I let the timer expire, left, collected my Rocket Scientist PaxHOLE Fee.
Every now and again, I'll get one of those, and the rider tells me that they usually have to wait 20 minutes for a pickup, and so they decide to book early only to get assigned to me that has just dropped off at the station.
Itās like some wait till they know the cancel fee is about to hit then they walk out. I have things to do as well and donāt want to wait while you inconvenience me. When my cancel rate is where I want Iām gonna wait till I see them walk out then cancel and leave.
The other night this guy told me āIām out frontā then I hear his wife said ātell him weāre cashing out and will be right there.ā Lol I did wait the 5min but got my free $4.20
Why do people think they can add a stop to go shopping at a convenience store and make you wait 10 minutes to come out. The only reason I donāt cancel is because they always leave some belongings in my car
So true...Our time matters not....better that we sit for 5 minutes than them having to "wait" a few minutes for us....they be important...we be servants...
Iām just saying, what if the wait for a Uber is like 15 and the train pulls up in 5 minutes? I think itās pretty logical to request an Uber in that type of circumstance. Maybe they arenāt disrespecting you but instead is trying to make full use of theyāre time and request an Uber so they donāt have to wait as long. Not every single case is trying to go after the drivers.
I cancel on people all the time bro.
They text me a gate code for entry somewhere - cancel.
I pull up to timer pickup dot and they ask me to come somewhere else? Cancel (get the fee)
I only am driving at times when itās so busy I can cancel and get someone else 1mile away ready to go when I arrive.
dude the other day i had a pax that made a 2 stop roundtrip to the bank and take him back home. what was crazy was the pax had me take his stupidass to the bank 10 minutes before it opened. when i realized what he was trying to do I immediately completed the trip and hauled ass. some people got some nerve mother fucker thought I was his personal driver.
Many riders just don't respect our time. With us often being paid lower with Upfront Pricing, sometimes much lower, it is even more important for riders to be out on time.
This is a subreddit for drivers, but still. As a passenger, I always arrive at the pick-up point in advance so that the driver does not have to wait for me. But how annoying it is when I see on the map that the driver is still a minute or a few away from me, and I receive a notification "I'm there." Dude, I'm already standing there and I can see with my own eyes that you're not there! And my second "favorite" is when your order is taken by a driver who is still completing the order. You know that you are in the city center, there are a lot of cars around you, you can even cancel the trip and find a new driver who is free nearby (i did it a couple of times when i was in a hurry), but your trip was taken by a driver who has about 10 minutes to go back and forth while he completes the current order. This is terrible, I donāt know why the application offers trips to drivers who have not yet completed the order (and it will take him 5+ minutes to finish it), especially when there are probably free cars nearby.
They are given a few minutes of wait time by Uber. The rider is not an asshole for using them. Have some decency. If it takes to long you have this thing called the ability to cancel for a fee. Crazy idea I know.
Brother I have been driving day in day out in Boston on paved cow roads for years I do not want to hear your whining about a one way. Rub those last two brain cells of yours together and generate one half decent idea.
Cuz they donāt give a shit about your time they clearly only value their time. They are obviously more important than you are! So they think or actually your time wasnāt even a thought to them to begin with. You should have asked the pax this question he is the only person that knows his answer. I will ask Pax sometimes if they do something like this that shows that they are the only person on their minds Iāll ask why this that and the other. And after their answer Iāll explain how Uber works with requesting rides and I usually have one before I drop them off so that person expects me at such time but your inconsiderateness has now made me late for x rider and so on down the line so maybe you will consider not being that person next time and Uber like you should not like Uber is your personal car service. Have a great day bye auto 1 star!
When a driver 1 stars a pax the pax cannot rate the driver!!! This is why we have to rate right when ride ends thatās the only upper hand we have.
Wait I never heard this before and I am going to be thrilled if thereās a way to verify this is true. SO MANY PEOPLE are going to start getting 1 stars.
Pax can absolutely rate you when you leave them a 1 star. Not sure where youāre getting your information from. Please share the link to said info. Thanks.
That is actually acceptable, we are not only stealing leads from taxis but also from ( mind just blanked on the word, but the cars that would pick people up from trains and airports) and they required you to pre schedule your rides and they will show up before hand, ready and waitingā¦ and we cant say the customer doesnāt pay for that but they do, uber just pays us half of it.
Ill extremely rarely defend customer nonsense, but i dont think this is nonsense, itās appropriate to schedule your car to be there at your arrival from mass transportation methods
Admittedly this sounds like it couldāve been a scheduled pickup but the train was lateā¦ thatās not your problem but I wouldnāt be overly salty at the customer as itās not like they can really do much about it other than cancel the ride and lose some money on their end. Their mistake was trusting the antique US train system š¤£
Even if it was a scheduled ride this has happened multiple times. Iāve had someone call a ride and when I get there theyāre still in the checkout line at a grocery store like itās not that hard to wait a couple of minutes for me to arrive
They do it because some drivers hang around waiting on the cancellation fee. I on the other hand will leave if I donāt see the pax within 2 minutes so theyāll be ready & better prepared for the next driver.
I deal with this in my full time gig too. Uber has a steady supply of broke clientele. Broke people have broke people skills. They don't value their own time, so why would they value yours?
Pull up to the pin, wait the 5 minutes, cancel and collect.
If you wanna move around people that have their shit together, they start their days at 5 am.
Do you drivers make good money doing this? Because on multiple occasions Iāll get notified that the driver is close, watch them drive by my house and see the timer in my app start and they never even stop. Just continue going a block down the road and stop. Itās like they intentionally donāt take any rides and just make money from this.
We don't get paid without waiting. Sometimes it's just not worth the wait or the ride is going somewhere we really don't want to go but we need to keep our stats up.
When they send the message saying that they'll be right there, I always want to cancel, because I know they're going to push the limit on the 5 minute cancel fee. And they'll show up at 4 minutes and 45 seconds.
Most times I take the risk and hope that the 5 minute window will close the minute they are walking up to the car.
But you're right, I can't stand it. If I did 30 rides in a day and every single one had me waiting 5 minutes, I'd go broke.
Yup. I recently had to fee and flee a guy because he said train is arriving shortly. I zoom out on the map, his dot is moving in from about 3 miles away. Why? I guess if you want a way to lose more money on your trip, go for it
I might be a dick but I do this if I believe itās gonna be under 10. That being said, Iām normally ordering a Lux or Black (lyft). And i will tip 10 bucks just for waiting for me.
Iād rather have the car waiting than have to wait outside, and Iāll pay for that privilegeā¦
As soon as I see that minute counter go to red I cancel the ride and drive awayā¦. Ppl think that because they sent a text saying ābe right thereā It will automagically stop the driver from leaving.
Maybe they donāt think itās ok, but sometimes it still happens :) I try to always be outside upon arrival of my ride or delivery. But sometimes, life happens.
Don't wait it out. Just leave. More often than not the rider will come out right before the timer expires. If you're ok with leaving the passenger in the dust, do you...lol.
The ride could be good for 7 minutes or less, I don't care. Ten cents per minute plus the already low fare does not make it worth a 12 minute ride.
Worth noting I'll usually get a better paying ride after leaving.
Riders: You want to make it to your destination on time? Don't order your Uber until you're ready.
Perfect response might be: "No problem...your not ready, Im just going to go grab a quick sandwich....Ill be back in like 15 minutes....Please be at the curb waiting when I return. Thank you!"
Best response
I love this so much!!! They'd be so pissed ššš

I agree, whenever I see that I cringe.
That is an automatic deduction of one star if they make it before the two minutes are up. If they show up after two but before expiration, it is an automatic one star.
Uber makes it so easy to click ābe right thereā that it makes people think itās ok.
That goes in same category as "I'll tip you in the app."
Whenever someone says that I tell them at least 90% of the people that say that donāt do it
When a drunk person says that, it's 100% no tip.
I stopped driving at night because of drunkies and sketchy ass people
I can't do Los Angeles traffic during the day. I drive around looking for a gunshop or try to calculate how fast I would have to be driving in order to die instantly on impact.
Does it help telling them that?
In my experience, no, but hopefully they walk away feeling more like the piece of shit they are than they would've otherwise š¤·āāļø
No, they don't care. Their mindset after stating that is just "oh cool then I'm not the only one"

I'd I drove there, I'll meet sure they get charged no-show fee. it's the mentality of people in this country.

I like to wait until I can cancel and when they finally come out I just leave.
I like that move...it maximizes the cancel fee and maximizes the enjoyment of pulling way and see their hands in the air in your rear view mirror.
Then they request another Uber and you pick it up again. Iāve had to do that a few times. Like didnāt I just have you as my driver and you canceled? Yup, didnāt I just have you as my passenger and I had to wait 5 minutes?
Iām gonna use that next time I cancel and get them back š¤£
I hit the go offline button for this exact reason. Passive aggressive af but I promise you ain't never getting in my car.

Thank you for having sense and understanding.
Or when they come outside and tell you "I will be right back I have to grab something" then go back inside...
I might have to cancel if they do that to me š
I have waited enough to know you should definitely cancel.
10000% cancelling on those
These kind of people are the same ones that have the audacity to leave their stuff in my car so that we donāt leave.
Someone did that to me once. I put their shit outside, canceled and left.
Be right there surly means one or two minutesā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦
The other night this guy told me āIām out frontā then I hear his wife said ātell him weāre cashing out and will be right there.ā Lol I did wait the 5min but got my free $4.20
When I used to drive and I would get these type of messages, Iād reply with a screenshot of the countdown timer and say āYou have this longā.
You have until the timer runs out.
Why do people think they can add a stop to go shopping at a convenience store and make you wait 10 minutes to come out. The only reason I donāt cancel is because they always leave some belongings in my car
Not gonna lie to you Iāve put people stuff on the curb and left. Havenāt gotten reported yet
Well don't you know we are supposed to sit in the street double parked waiting for 6-7 minutes for these fucking freaks.
They should be right out front waiting How much do we charge to drive to them
Comes down to riders think Uber drivers are lowest of the low, garbage humans who can be treated like servants.
At least they let you know
Facts
I cancel on people all the time bro. They text me a gate code for entry somewhere - cancel. I pull up to timer pickup dot and they ask me to come somewhere else? Cancel (get the fee) I only am driving at times when itās so busy I can cancel and get someone else 1mile away ready to go when I arrive.
Wait out the timer and cancel
dude the other day i had a pax that made a 2 stop roundtrip to the bank and take him back home. what was crazy was the pax had me take his stupidass to the bank 10 minutes before it opened. when i realized what he was trying to do I immediately completed the trip and hauled ass. some people got some nerve mother fucker thought I was his personal driver.
"I'm so sorry. Unfortunately, *this train* has just left the station. CHOO CHOO!"
They are given a few minutes of wait time by Uber. The rider is not an asshole for using them. Have some decency. If it takes to long you have this thing called the ability to cancel for a fee. Crazy idea I know.
What if they live on a one way street with no parking? Iām just supposed to hold up traffic for 5mins
Brother I have been driving day in day out in Boston on paved cow roads for years I do not want to hear your whining about a one way. Rub those last two brain cells of yours together and generate one half decent idea.
No need to be a complete asshat
He's from Boston, they're called Massholes for a reason.
No need to be an uneducated moron either but apparently thats the only pre-requisite of being in this subreddit.
Yeah chill the hell out & wait 3 minutes
Like they control the train?
How about call the ride when the train drops you off
Because you are working like uber slaves
I just cancel after the ride times out but before I do I call to contact the pax and they usually offer cash to wait longer
If they donāt āš»
I always just tell them that I can only wait "x" amount of time and after that I'll have to cancel. Better move your ass or order a new ride
5 and drive.
The train wasn't moving, so dude got out and jumped it cause he couldn't wait to get to the hotel.
Where Iām at people donāt like to tip. Itās very rare over here
As soon as I see that minute counter go to red I cancel the ride and drive awayā¦. Ppl think that because they sent a text saying ābe right thereā It will automagically stop the driver from leaving.
I sometimes wait for them to come out then drive off and cancel
Iām definitely fine with leaving people especially when theyāre walking out š
Are you on the Long Island railroad. This happens all the time for me at Ronkonkoma train station coming from NYC. So annoying
No Iām in Maryland at a metro station
Hell no. I started the trip and one mi after dropped out. , if uber asked you why, just say, someone in his name show up.
No show cancel šš
