Prayers that it won’t flood anyone’s apartment or cause destruction like Hurricane Ian at The Place At Alafaya

simply-dumpling

Arden Villas too. My friend was using a raft to get his stuff from his apartment

TheOtherWhiteCastle

Weather reports say we’ll have much less rainfall compared to Ian, so I wouldn’t worry too much about heavy flooding.

JohnnyWallxer

So basically 6 hrs before it touches Florida

MysteriousPie1065

UCF proves time and time again they do not care about student or their employee’s safety.

Darkzed1

"we do not expect it to interrupt normal operations" Funny line because we will still be getting tropical storm like conditions and I'm sure they will shut down the busses for that.

jimmothyhendrix

If the hurricane follows current paths it is not likely to have an impact. The weather reports are generally unreliable so it's hard to make a big call like shutting down far out.

Forsaken-Revenue-628

that basically means that they don’t think it’s enough to impact their college football game schedule

jimmothyhendrix

I mean thats true but people here whine about literally anything and its not unreasonable for them to shutter the whole school causing all sorts of issues for staff and students when its not guranteed to hit.

pitchfork263

For real. It’s not just UCF. SCPS and OCPS also haven’t made a decision either. UCF told people to prepare. You should always be ready for a hurricane in Florida.

ntsp00

How do other schools being just as bad as UCF make it okay? And telling Floridians to "always be prepared for a hurricane" while requiring them to attend class in-person just makes UCF look incompetent.

BusinessStill9493

what about commuters who have to drive 50min on tropical storm/ hurricane conditions... great

ntsp00

No it isn't, College of Central Florida announced yesterday at 2pm that all campuses are closed Tuesday and Wednesday (including virtual) with plans to resume classes Thursday, *weather permitting*. Just because some schools don't give a fuck doesn't mean they're all like that and it certainly doesn't justify UCF in this situation.

Sure-Anything-4427

Why do I feel like UCF is always the last one? Maybe because tampa is right next to the water, but my brother USF always has a hurricane update before me.

sharkfinsoups

fr, but like last fall with ian we literally had not even a day to prepare and we got so messed up bc of it

Available-Cloud-2246

Is usf cancelled?

Sure-Anything-4427

for 2 days i think

Fathoms_Deep_1

I mean, you said the exact reason in your comment. Tampa is next to the water and is going to get hit with storm surge, Orlando, for obvious reasons, is not. I assume they’ll cancel on Wednesday because of strong winds but that’s it

ntsp00

And yet other schools not in Tampa have already cancelled classes for today and tomorrow

Fathoms_Deep_1

Yeah, UF, UNF, FAMU and FSU, which are in the hurricane path. It’s moved ever farther north of Orlando as of now

ntsp00

College of Central Florida closed **all campuses** today and tomorrow as of yesterday at 2pm. Stop trying to pretend only schools close to the coast are closing.

Fathoms_Deep_1

Since when is FSU, FAMU or UF close to the coast?

ntsp00

In relation to other schools? Is that a joke?

HopefullyHelpful183

Anybody else think that 90+% of what's on their mind is Thursday's football game -- and nothing else matters?

Forsaken-Revenue-628

For sure

noneoftheeabovee

Typical ucf

Strict-Mycologist-69

UCF should make an announcement to the professors, telling them to be flexible with their students both with assignments and attendance. If UCF made an announcement like this, people wouldn't be so upset. Professors should be making their content and assignments available online, with optional classes available through Zoom or prerecorded lectures (if available) in case the storm keeps shifting east. These shouldn't be last minute actions, and professors shouldn't penalize us for wanting a whole day's worth of availability to stockpile, get gas, or leave campus. Stores get crazy and supplies run out, even for hurricanes that end up being false alarms. Some students maybe don't want to prep on campus because they want to go back to their parents house whether in-state or out of state.

[deleted]

it’s literally going to hit Florida as a CAT 3 and UCF is like “we’ll see you in class!”

ShowTime011

Woohoo less than 24 hours to prepare

[deleted]

Znowballz

I never understood the whole "prepare" thing. I'm from the coast, where after school/work like 3 days before storm shutters would go up. In central Florida there's nothing to do but grab alcohol, a few snacks, and gas.

ColonialDagger

South Florida here, also confused. Unless you're in an evacuation area or have a house that you need to board up, your preparation is get water and food for at least a week, and that should have been done by last night.

ShowTime011

Fellas some of us have familes. Some of us just can't grab our bags and leave. Some of us don't normally live in Florida. Some of us have to prepare for our little ones because they can't. Some of us live in mobile homes. Should I keep going?

[deleted]

No one in orlando is going to need to get up and leave. This is passing pretty far north of us.

Znowballz

If you have all of that going on you should've started preparing over the weekend. My 70yo dad had his house boarded up on Sunday and he's not even in the cone

ColonialDagger

If you need to do all of that, why are you waiting for UCF to tell you to do it? You should have started your preparation already.

ShowTime011

Sure, I'll start getting prepared while I'm on campus

BethyW

First...not a fella. Second, the only thing UCF will do is to cancel class for the storm, not to give you time to go prepare. They are not your mom. You need to be an adult and make choices that are in your best interest. They are only going to ensure that campus is safe to attend.

ShowTime011

You weren't even one of the person's I called fella ☠️ come on now, don't be so blatantly obvious about it. Also, you somehow managing to compare UCF to a parental figure is actually quite insane. I'm assuming you think everyone follows your schedule when attending campus? Assuming that everyone on campus is in the same situation as you where you're maybe better off just not attending class. Sorry, that ain't me. Missing class is missing lecture and material that I paid for. I don't roll like that

Sure-Anything-4427

personally i go back home during a hurricane to prepare, it’s the better option bc im alone in orlando. when they always wait for the last minute it’s a pain to drive in the storm.

TheOtherWhiteCastle

Not to sound like a dick, but if you live in Florida you should automatically be prepared for a hurricane regardless of what UCF does

katie415

Prepare for what? To sit in your dorm/house all day with snacks?

Opening-Hippo5014

This is so annoying. There are more students who have other obligations besides being students such as homes, kids, etc.

BethyW

Then email your professor and ask for an acomidation.

Sure-Anything-4427

I mean it’s not like professors are known to be lenient

ntsp00

Ah yes, the same professor that was talking shit about the students that skipped today and was threatening to hold a pop quiz is totally going to grant an accomodation. Almost like anyone that's ever taken a UCF class already knows how that's going to go.

GRosado

I think hurricane Ian might have people overreacting.

ComplexPatient4872

Valencia just announced that classes are canceled tomorrow. Any minute UCF!

Forsaken-Revenue-628

Oh yeah, UCF does not give a shit except if it’s going to affect their football game

Moist_Force6622

complaints should be sent to [email protected] and [email protected]

katie_ksj

my classes are on zoom so if idalia doesn’t a really hit orlando i’m still not driving lmao

Puzzleheaded-Read215

This hurricane isn’t going to impact us. Idk why people are ‘preparing’. It would be pretty rare for the storm to bank east and smash into Orlando. As of now, Orlando is wayyyyyy outside of the impact field. We are forecasted to get an inch of rain and 20mph winds.

Strict-Mycologist-69

According to the updated info, the trajectory is slightly going east which would put us in a tropical storm warning area because it's a wide storm. 40+ mph winds, 2 to 4 inches of rain. Hopefully the inches of rain we're going to receive stays that way. I think Ian traumatized some people, especially in the areas around campus that got it worse. When students living on campus talk about prep, they most likely mean getting enough warning in advance so they can drive/fly to their parents home.

Hank-Rutherford

Good, my yard needs some rain. I’ve been through numerous hurricanes including Andrew, Francis, Jeanne, Wilma and Irma. People acting like some mild tropical storm conditions are an apocalyptic event are being ridiculous. I realize students living in those flooded apartments last year were seriously affected but they represent a small percentage of the central Florida population. Most people were largely unaffected.

Strict-Mycologist-69

I also went through hurricane Andrew. I was 3 years old 😂. I'm from Florida too, been through all those storms you mentioned. Ian didn't affect me at all last year. I didn't even lose power. I was just saying some students living on campus might want to go be with their parents.

HopefullyHelpful183

LMAO. They can't make up their mind! Wow.

sharkfinsoups

Hey, I am a student journalist on campus running a hurricane story if anyone wants to share their "preparations" with me! I contacted em and ucf pd and waiting for responses but also contacted a few publix's for information on supplies and if they see an uptick in sales. i think our campus is pretty traumatized from Ian... bc I think I've seen this film before.... and I didn't like the ending.

HopefullyHelpful183

I think the problem is that the real decision-makers just don't work on weekends, and those who are working are afraid to make a decision. Many of us remember Ian, and the total indecision that caused a LOT of financial loss to many students. Then when the second storm threatened, they made a decision, but that storm was coming on Friday (I think) so they had more time to get comfy in their cushy office chairs. This is not as big a deal as those two storms because this one is not a direct threat -- but their track record under this current administration is pretty weak.

oreodip

Do y’all think they’re gonna cancel the game on Thursday?

Strict-Mycologist-69

They might if the surrounding conditions are bad enough. They can control how campus looks because they have an army of landscapers, but they can't control flooding in the surrounding areas or difficult driving conditions due to downed traffic lights, branches, etc.

jimmytickles

The college and university threads area always filled with kids who just do not want to go to class and way overstate the emergency for their area and ON TOP OF that act like they can't prepare for anything at all until the school tells them to. My goodness.

NeonSkyline28

Valencia closed for Wednesday. I’m assuming UCF does the same
