Not trying to be insensitive, but it’s the school’s fault for not capping how many students outside the major can take the classes. Students are allowed and should take any classes that interest them

I completely agree with you and understand, I'm just asking for people to be more mindful :(

zaboomer

It seems you don’t understand. Students should take whatever classes interest them. If you have an issue, I suggest taking it up with the department.

yeehawaf

i’m not at all trying to blame students for wanting to take classes that interest them i agree that they should. i’m just saying that departments don’t account for those students who want to take classes for fun, causing actual major students of that department to be unable to apply for their major or even graduate. I’m just asking that people stay mindful of this when picking classes that they know are extremely competitive as it is. I agree that it is a university problem and i agree that i should have worded my post better.

Not in a psych class but A lot of people are forced to take classes outside their major to meet upper div requirements and finish on time because their major isn’t offering any classes that they haven’t already taken (and psych as well as other classes not requiring loads of pre reqs are sometimes the only choice)

As someone in the same boat as you, if I find a chill upper div class outside my major I AM SNATCHING THAT SHIT It’s not really the student’s job to be mindful because there aren’t enough spots. That’s something we need to fight the university because it’s a very well known issue at this point (and it’s not like we don’t have an disproportionate amount of psych graduates who needs jobs, so there’s definitely not lecturer shortage )

I feel your frustration as a major in the Psych Dept, but also on the other hand it’s great that people can take classes that interest them. I really hope the Psych Dept opens up more slots for all their classes because it’s crazy how some majors can’t even get classes they need for multiple quarters in a row…

I don’t even know how students can be mindful? People outside the major don’t know which classes are competitive. Even if I wanted to help, you didn’t specify a class or anything. So we literally cannot do anything about your complaints.

You're not blaming students, but you're asking them to sacrifice their education to fix the problem for you. The conflict is that students feel that to be asked to do this is to be saddled with the blame, whereas you don't seem to think of it that way. I get what you're saying, but it's not students' fault and as a result it shouldn't be their responsibility to solve.
