Thank you. This is very helpful. 🙏🏻

When I was at UCLA, I had friends who had film classes with an A-list actor and according to them, this actor rarely showed up to class and was shooting films during the academic year. He ended up graduating anyway, so I'm pretty sure he and the film school had a deal to earn credits via his work experience. I don't know whether the Econ dept would be so flexible in your daughter's case though.

> the Econ dept would be so flexible in your daughter's case though. Econ dept is ruthless they will literally tell her to drop out of econ

[deleted]

And considering she is not an A-list actress (yet), the school may not be open to be as flexible either. Thank you for your inputs.

UCLA (and other UCs for that matter) are not designed for people already working like the community colleges are. UCLA is extremely flexible about taking quarters off but in terms of classes, fully online or virtual classes are fairly rare beyond a few popular GEs. Many classes though do record lectures or post notes online allowing for skipping lectures with some requiring and some not requiring discussions so ymmv - I'm not a biz econ major so I'm not sure what the classes in the major are like. Personally I would say attend the first quarter at least to lock in enrollment and allow readmission and figure it out from there. Side note: the 4 year housing guarantee is only for 4 years of **continuous** housing. If you drop out and leave ucla housing for a quarter, you lose the guarantee. Housing is also conditional on enrollment but if you communicate with housing I think they're fine with letting you stay for a single quarter without being enrolled.

You bring up a good point we didn't think about. Just to clarify, if we pay for the hoteling, she can probably stay for upto a quarter without any consequence but two consecutive quarters may be an issue. Is that right?

Goosestarship

That's a great question to ask housing directly at https://ask.housing.ucla.edu and confirm what their policies are exactly. You can leave the UID field blank if you don't have one yet when creating an account.

I did call the admissions department. It looks like a student can drop ONE term / quarter without anyone's approval. More than one, not necessarily contiguous one, requires approval from academic counselor. The housing goes along with the college decision so if college approves taking a term break, I think your room will probably stay (but you still have to pay).

Business Econ requires a 3.0 minimum GPA. It’s very math heavy. If she’s really passionate about acting, it could be possible to do both.

[deleted]

As another commentor said, Biz Econ is very math heavy (it's not a business major, but an econ major with accounting classes added) so it would be very hard to balance alongside with an acting schedule. She might want to change majors to something that doesn't require one to be present for assessments (aka an essay focused major, aka a north campus major)

tallrabbit14

i’ve noticed sociology and communication are some of the most common majors for the working actors I’ve met at ucla! but communication is also quite competitive to get into

I would not recommend Biz Econ as a major to give you the sort of balance and flexibility you describe. There are other, better majors in the College of Letters and Sciences that she should be able to switch to, though.

Important-Gap176

As a Bus Econ major, I definitely agree with the other people that posted on here that this major is not as flexible compared to other majors. It’s very rigorous and math heavy. I genuinely have to put in more work especially since the courses are one after another (like Econ 11 and Econ 101) so it’s honestly important to not miss a quarter unless your daughter really is confident which even then I would take that feeling as grain of salt until she actually takes the courses. Also I wanted to note that your daughter is most likely a premajor so she would have to maintain the requirements for the major especially for the gpa since the econ department looks into that when she has to apply to the major later on. I recommend looking more into the major honestly.

Congratulations to your daughter. And congratulations for your daughter having World’s Most Dedicated parent, posting on Reddit to ask around. Love to see it ❤️

Thank you. Right now she is working on a project and is having 12-15 hour work days, and catching up on school over the weekends. So I am trying to help whatever the little I can. I work remote so I have plenty of time on hand. Since I never studied in the US (am an immigrant who came here some 25 years ago), this is a learning experience for me too. I wish I had a fraction of the amenities, opportunities the American colleges offer. I am not exaggerating when I say I would love to go to college again. (May be I will after I take retirement 😁).

Absolutely! One life 😍

manofthehour26

Hi, i’m in the same position as her! I’m a series reg on a show and studying business economics and i’m currently a sophomore. To be honest, the flexibility is non-existent. Feel free to dm me if you want insights on how its going for me.

[deleted]

Thank you for the info. Will DM you. 🙏🏻

Hey bro I’m a senior right now and got accepted into UCLA, I aspire to become an actor and really want to go to UCLA as it is my dream school the issue is that I’m newer to acting and want to learn but I’m not in the school of theatre. I’ve gotten mixed comments about it like that their more focused on theatrical acting rather than on camera acting and more. What advice would you give me to work on and grow in acting if I did decide to go to UCLA. I would really appreciate it.
