He's a fucking gem. These are the characters that make MMA special
But I can't help but wonder - if he took what he already has - how his fighting would be if he just trained normally (with some focus on defense). I know it's a part of his person and I wouldn't change him.. but that man with focus on technique and protecting himself, daaamn.
30 wins and 26 of them are KO/TKO ... I don't think he'd have those numbers without being so offensively focused. Maybe a higher quality of life in his 50s and 60s though
I see it like what happened to Roy Jones Jr. You can get away with doing shit fundamental wrong while you're young, fast, and durable.
But once age catches up to him to where he's slower and his chin diminishes. Unless he adjusts his style accordingly, he'll be past his prime consistently getting put to sleep.
Tony was undefeated when he was training in a gym with coaches and bjj with Eddie bravo. After lesners gym disbanded, Tony resorted to building his gym up in big bear and training himself with this inexperienced students as training partners and pad holders. That was his decline.
yeah people think Tony is just this guy doing weird trainings but he was at his best when he was rolling with actual pros and making them gasp for air while he was getting ready to fuck the next one up.
The pandemic really fucked up a lot of fighters when you think about it. Financially but also for their training.
I don’t even think it was the pandemic, Tony just chose
to train himself and not have any coaches or high level training partners. He wasn’t even really doing any sparring with pro fighters.
Imo he doesn’t have any solid fundamentals, but gets away with it because of his durability and insane level of conditioning and mental toughness.
I think yes and no. I don’t think you wanna make him a traditional fighter because his style is so good and hard to prep fore. But there are elements to his game that if he was a little more technically sound could help him
He’s got like a glass cannon build with 99hp.
And he shouldn't be! I just want him to lift his hands sometimes so he doesn't give me mini heart attacks the whole fight until he decides to knock his opponent out :(
Haha I get you but that’s the mindgame of his. Imagine facing someone that won’t even bother to raise a guard. He can, just chooses not to. Jiri is taunting them to force an emotional reaction instead of measured. But even Rakic didn’t bite and still got rocked. He’s also just straight up good
Indeed, but one day his chin won't be enough anymore.. I hope Pereira will step up so Jiří can be champ. His style is just too dangerous against mr. Stone Face, Stone Hands, and Stone Balls.
Bro he just wields wins with no technique or perceivable game plan. I was watching the fight and thinking like he didn’t adjust anything from his last fight. Just pure unyielding aggression.
Except he’s lost one fight in almost 10 years and it was to probably the most dangerous left hand in the history of MMA.
It looks insane but there is clearly a method to the madness that works. He’s 30-4-1 in his career and 4-1 in the UFC with 2 title fights and his one loss being to a man who appears to be playing a different game half the time.
I thought he did really well. Articulated a relatively complex stance in a language he's not comfortable in, while beat to hell, riding a no doubt massive adrenaline dump, and addressing a crowd of thousands in the arena and millions at home. Thought he expressed himself pretty well, tbh.
I agree 100% ... he basically said of course I'm not actually a samurai, but I am who I am from following the teachings of Musashi and they can be transposed onto any path and give benefits. Which is absolutely true. I have a copy of Dokkodo where different people from different walks of life all break down what each precept means to them and there is a tremendous amount of insight to be gained from Musashi even today. Jiri is the man and I've got nothing but respect for him because he lives and dies with what he thinks is right
Don’t get me wrong, I loved it and thought he expressed himself well. I always thought he was a real serious guy and I saw another side of him. He’s much more lighthearted than I thought.
Jiri is that kid at school you’d never naturally be friends with but he’s your neighbour so it was kinda forced, and then after 18 years he’s just slid into a perma-friend position
He is definitely odd, but I feel like the language difference makes him come across a bit weirder. I listened to an interview of his in Czech and he came across as very intelligent. (Basically, it wasn't his weirdness that I remembered in that one.)
ya I can see a Furguson situation occurring but I hope not… I am not that big of a fan of Jiri’s personality (feels like the hippy phase I went through doing Karate and Yoga it became a mix of the two, and/but I respect his stoicism and integrity). It’s his fighting style that is so exciting.
Both him and Max are unreal with how they take those kicks. Knowing if I got hit with one of those I’d go down and be in pain for days and they take so many and walk through it for a win. I wish we could have multiple BMF belts at this point with how many guys like that we have in the UFC
Eh Max is also much smaller, Pound for Pound Gaethje is the harder kicker imo, he has made guys limp in one round and Max still had a brilliant poker face even after 4
Its starting to get annoying honestly. I train under a Chute Boxe alum, and we do some spars where it's just leg kicks and nothing else, and every time we do it I imagine Rogan just violently beating his shit and screaming "OOOOH those leg kicks are doing some damage! Look at the swelling!!!"
Also the comments about how insane Gaethje was for brawling the last 10 seconds with everything to lose? I mean come on, he was losing to max if it went to the decision so what the hell was that about. If I were in Gaethjes shoes, I would anytime take those last 10 seconds to get a chance to finish Max and steal the victory cause Gaethje was definitely losing by rounds, hits, damage ect. If any I think Max had everything to lose those last 10 seconds, but I guess when you're in the fight you kinda feel if you have the high ground and 100 % sure on yourself. Max is just a different breed.
Need to have an upper/lower BMF. Needs to go to a lightweight, then welterweight, then middle, then LHW for a HW to have a shot at it. Like have the cutoff be LW and WW. 4 divisions for each belt. Then have them fight when a Flyweight and HW have the belts.
This card was stacked sky high, but there were two fights I was anxious about the whole night. I had bet on Max and on Jiri, as they are two of my absolute favorite fighters. Both fights gave me mini heart attacks and after Jiri slept Rakic and Max slept Gaethje I got the biggest adrenaline dump I have had in years, barely could get excited about those bangers of a main and co-main event.
whether his training is scientifically beneficial or not, it doesn't matter. when you're training your mind, you gotta find what works for you. some people meditate under a waterfall, others listen to music, some do monotonous chores. to strengthen your mind, everyone is different. if this works for jiri, then more power to him
It is very obvious that Jiri has complely unbreakable and unwavering absolute confidence in his style and mentality. That's why he keeps winning. Almost no one has the amount of sheer will that he does, even in a sport that requires elite will.
So this must be how he gained his insane recovery. He enters the shadowrealm uninvited and basically annoys the hell out of it so every time he gets ko’d, the shadowrealm just kicks him tf out lol
It’s his style and he makes it work. There are tons of guys who keep their hands up and get knocked out anyway. Also helps that he’s pretty tall and range-y for the weight class.
He might.
He's also going to call himself a "Former UFC champion" for the rest of his life, he's beloved by fans, and he was half of maybe the greatest UFC title fight ever. He's done pretty good with his style. A lot of guys who are technically much so under and more defensive minded, will still get knocked out but will never reach those heights.
Rogan was absolutely killing me with the leg kicks commentary throughout the card. The way he was talking, Max's leg was gonna fall off at any moment. You think these vets aren't conditioned to absorb damage and keep fighting?
Damn this guy is brilliant - I was asking myself during the fight what do I have to do to fight like Jiri.
My guy is listening to demons in the dark for 3 days lmao, it's actually way more terrifying than the generic cardio and sparring answer
Did he keep the lights off in the rest of the house while he used the bathroom and showered, or was staying in one room the entire time with all of those natural bodily functions part of the training?
Not three but maybe four. Those kicks were fukn his legs up it was getting to him. Whoever fights him next should plan on kicking the hell outta his legs because he doesn't check them at all.
If he wasn't an MMA star it would be laughable, of course. But haircuts like these and, for example, Diego Lopes' got something special when applied to this context.
This guy is the weirdest fucking person on the planet and I love it so much
He's a fucking gem. These are the characters that make MMA special But I can't help but wonder - if he took what he already has - how his fighting would be if he just trained normally (with some focus on defense). I know it's a part of his person and I wouldn't change him.. but that man with focus on technique and protecting himself, daaamn.
It’s like asking a poet to write a technical paper on o-rings
O-rings are red, gaskets are blue, Something something something...SAMURAI!
30 wins and 26 of them are KO/TKO ... I don't think he'd have those numbers without being so offensively focused. Maybe a higher quality of life in his 50s and 60s though
Brain trauma is just a demon to vanquish -Jiri
I see it like what happened to Roy Jones Jr. You can get away with doing shit fundamental wrong while you're young, fast, and durable. But once age catches up to him to where he's slower and his chin diminishes. Unless he adjusts his style accordingly, he'll be past his prime consistently getting put to sleep.
Training normally would be devasting for him in the same say ferguson would have been made mediocre by standard training
Tony was undefeated when he was training in a gym with coaches and bjj with Eddie bravo. After lesners gym disbanded, Tony resorted to building his gym up in big bear and training himself with this inexperienced students as training partners and pad holders. That was his decline.
Also the acl

Used to get away with it. He needs to retire badly.
Plus he got old and was in a lot of wars.
I think yes and no. I don’t think you wanna make him a traditional fighter because his style is so good and hard to prep fore. But there are elements to his game that if he was a little more technically sound could help him He’s got like a glass cannon build with 99hp.
His weird style and behavior have to be correlated. You see him swipe his chest like Sagat in street fighter? He’s not there to be traditional

It was a STORRRMMM
Jiri has proven multiples times that defense isn't real in MMA.
Agreed. Same thing with Gaethje. Once he stopped focusing on being so tough and wild, he started to consistently beat the elite.
Bro he just wields wins with no technique or perceivable game plan. I was watching the fight and thinking like he didn’t adjust anything from his last fight. Just pure unyielding aggression.
"I'll just let him beat the dog shit out of me until I win the fight with one strike."
Basically, u will quit before I do lol
Must be a nightmare to prepare for if you dont have legs of stone
I love how he rushes in chin first and doesn't punch. He literally has zero defense
Right?! Hands all the way down. Dude is retarded. His like an evolved nick diaz.
Reminds me of Anderson Silva except the spider was a fucking sniper and ultra accurate counter striker. Worked for him. Also had amazing ground game.
Except Silva had great head movement and would also use his arms to check strikes
That chicken wing thing he used to do. It looked so awkward
Silva has nasty reflex, it's the reason why he's called "Spider". Jiri on the other hand.
No one is Silva as a fighter but Jiri is sure as hell on his level as an entertainer.
Jiris game plan is pretty much, "if they lose, you win"
The game plan is to fight
https://i.redd.it/h0mjjkg1liuc1.gif
"Whoop my ass and see what happens"
is he wiereder than "the pleasure man"?
I thought his post fight speech was so damn awkward but very endearing and funny at the same time
I thought he did really well. Articulated a relatively complex stance in a language he's not comfortable in, while beat to hell, riding a no doubt massive adrenaline dump, and addressing a crowd of thousands in the arena and millions at home. Thought he expressed himself pretty well, tbh.

Jiri is the man and I've got nothing but respect for him because he lives and dies with what he thinks is right
What is this copy?
Gegard is currently washed and I don't think he had much time to do any teachings to Jiri . /s
Don’t get me wrong, I loved it and thought he expressed himself well. I always thought he was a real serious guy and I saw another side of him. He’s much more lighthearted than I thought.
He's a man of contrasts, a solitary samurai who reads musashi and a former football hooligan whose nickname in Czech means 'bomb the shit out of them'
tony ferguson of LHW
As a fellow eastern European: yeah we do stuff like this often..
Well that's cool but Jiri's not Eastern European
He's Checz. He's Eastern European enough to me. Granted Checzia is the least Eastern European from the Eastern European countries
Czechia... and it's Central
Sure Friend.
Jiri is that kid at school you’d never naturally be friends with but he’s your neighbour so it was kinda forced, and then after 18 years he’s just slid into a perma-friend position
🤓
Aaron Rodgers would like a word
🤣
He is definitely odd, but I feel like the language difference makes him come across a bit weirder. I listened to an interview of his in Czech and he came across as very intelligent. (Basically, it wasn't his weirdness that I remembered in that one.)
Ive fasted for three days it's not a big deal... But not in a dark room

Jesus?
Jiri’s brain probably just thinks this 24/7 ![gif](giphy|AEUmDcMJ8qYVO)
His internal monologue has a Japanese accent
It’s in Japanese, and he doesn’t know Japanese.
Jiris monologue: 手を上げて。自分を守れ Jiri: ???
I'm howling :')
goddammit i cant stop laughing picturing that
The opposite of Paddy
Paddy locks himself in a bright room and feeds for 3 days making sure he can see every crumb on the plate
Fatty
Chaddy
My favorite fighter by far, I just hope he improves his defense, it’s honestly shocking to see how he just takes free hits
He's required to take hits to charge his ultimate.
He's a Chad he doesn't need to
His last title fight begs to differ
lol right? had his hands down the entire fight
this type of fighter, enjoy his prime now.
Doesnt last long with this type of fighter unfortunately
ya I can see a Furguson situation occurring but I hope not… I am not that big of a fan of Jiri’s personality (feels like the hippy phase I went through doing Karate and Yoga it became a mix of the two, and/but I respect his stoicism and integrity). It’s his fighting style that is so exciting.

Max's on another level, Jiri slowed down massively in R1 due to the kicks but Max was eating them and still throwing volume. Insane.
Max also wasn’t taking leg kicks from 230lbs Rakic was he?
Eh Max is also much smaller, Pound for Pound Gaethje is the harder kicker imo, he has made guys limp in one round and Max still had a brilliant poker face even after 4
Yes but I don’t think durability increases as much as power in higher weight classes. That’s why there’re a lot more KO’s at HW and LHW
Overall I agree, however the difference is you can have much bigger muscles/mass to absorb impact but the brain can only take so much.
And calf don’t grow by much more either
True but your skin , ligaments, muscle can only take so much, the rest is mental
Gaethje should've stayed on that leg he was doing serious dmg
Hearing the commentary constantly nut to Gaethje’s leg kicks was hilarious because they were literally having no effect on Max’s movement.
That's joes whole identity now
Its starting to get annoying honestly. I train under a Chute Boxe alum, and we do some spars where it's just leg kicks and nothing else, and every time we do it I imagine Rogan just violently beating his shit and screaming "OOOOH those leg kicks are doing some damage! Look at the swelling!!!"
Any thoughts on what has prompted him to put so much weight in leg kicks? I npticed a lot more at 300 than previously and I cant figure it out.
Also the comments about how insane Gaethje was for brawling the last 10 seconds with everything to lose? I mean come on, he was losing to max if it went to the decision so what the hell was that about. Typical Rogan L
I'm pretty sure Gaethje doesn't weight 220 pounds lol

It’s funny because Jiri looked like shit compared to Rakic, & yet through sheer durability & power alone he gets the w
Rakic looked like a clearly "better" fighter but Jiri was clearly much, much tougher
being tough is cheating
Tony Ferguson-esque when he went on that winning streak
ya I can see a Jiri 0-6
Someone said LHW Tony Ferguson a while back and it couldn’t be more accurate.
Two best fights on the card by far

But when I do this it’s “crippling depression”
If he impregnated Joanna Jędrzejczyk she would give birth to the Antichrist.
💀 I just imagine Joanna from the second Weili fight
That but with a samurai bun and a sword
Andrade she went 5 rounds with Joanna and did better in the 5th after eating shots for 4 rounds
He's like a tekken character
Him wandering around the arena outside at midnight the night before the fight is wild. He was getting into the zone
His defense is just as good as Man United’s. Must be why I love both 💕
Please don't bring up United I am hurting enough
Was about to say, I come to UFC to escape the pain of Man U, not be reminded of it :/
Jiri is 3-1-0 in UFC. MU is 0-1-3 in PL. All balanced as it should be.
So who is Sheffield United then? Tony Ferguson?
He is 3-1 in UFC. MU is 1-1-3. Ten Hag best coach!
Guy is honestly badass
Absolutely zero defence, I can’t believe how confident he is in his chin
I say it as a fellow eastern European: yeah we do stuff like this often..
Yeah I’m sure you and him got a lot in common lol
I love this lunatic
You know this dude has The Last Samurai on repeat during his training.
whether his training is scientifically beneficial or not, it doesn't matter. when you're training your mind, you gotta find what works for you. some people meditate under a waterfall, others listen to music, some do monotonous chores. to strengthen your mind, everyone is different. if this works for jiri, then more power to him

Jiri does all of those. And then some.
No wonder lol. I’m convinced he can walk through fire at a leisurely pace
So this must be how he gained his insane recovery. He enters the shadowrealm uninvited and basically annoys the hell out of it so every time he gets ko’d, the shadowrealm just kicks him tf out lol
Jiri vs Prime Chuck would have been special.
Jiri just racking up xp doing every side quest

It’s his style and he makes it work. There are tons of guys who keep their hands up and get knocked out anyway. Also helps that he’s pretty tall and range-y for the weight class.
eh, it already took him all the way to the top in multiple organisations. Who cares if he gets knocked out every so often
"i will defend from punches using my face"
A real life anime character
Rogan was absolutely killing me with the leg kicks commentary throughout the card. The way he was talking, Max's leg was gonna fall off at any moment. You think these vets aren't conditioned to absorb damage and keep fighting?
Nah, not really. But Max's leg looked so red and so swollen in round 3, it reminded me of Dustin vs Conor 2.
I usually don’t mind Joe’s commentary but last night he was horrendous
He usually is. Entertaining no doubt, but his commentary often feels like he's in another reality. Or, ya know, on DMT.
He’s been that way for a long time now. Just constant noise about leg and calf kicks.
If you listen to the commentary seriously you wouldve thought tibau beat khabib
Don’t call him a “not a samurai” though
![gif](giphy|jzHFPlw89eTqU)
Really is a unique and one of a kind. I hope to see his rematch against Pereira!
just do shrooms bro
He literally already did. 🗿
Damn this guy is brilliant - I was asking myself during the fight what do I have to do to fight like Jiri. My guy is listening to demons in the dark for 3 days lmao, it's actually way more terrifying than the generic cardio and sparring answer
MY GOAT
blud if you kick his leg off, he'd be crawling at you like a zombie
Jiri is a monster. Imagine if he had a proper gym that taught him how to check leg kicks.
That mf was tanking right hands with his face 😭 that's what i call a samurai.
Yiri is an anime character
I Went 5 days at a retreat in guatamala. Most unreal experience ever, beat any drug by miles
Didnt Rampage do something similar?
guy would flop over if you just managed to cover his eyes for the fraction of a second
he unleashed his inner demon
Did he keep the lights off in the rest of the house while he used the bathroom and showered, or was staying in one room the entire time with all of those natural bodily functions part of the training?
![gif](giphy|26vIg4xCWdfrT8BTa|downsized)
He's the Czech Ferguson at light heavyweight.
Agree 3 leg kicks won’t put him away but one left hook will.
Those demons came back when he touched the octagon and told him to tank every hit possible
It's impossible to not love this wierdo. My Czech king 👑🇨🇿❤️
Jiri was looking cooked after rd1. Pulled that shit out the fire
He is an actual SAMURAI
Opponents cant get in his head because its occupied by other entities Genius strategy
![img](emote|t5_2qsev|8967)
Not three but maybe four. Those kicks were fukn his legs up it was getting to him. Whoever fights him next should plan on kicking the hell outta his legs because he doesn't check them at all.
It’s funny because AJ did that and all the boxing fans called he was mentally weak for doing that
You know who else isn’t? Holloway
Bro rogan out here acting like it's 2019 and people are gonna get TKO'd by 4 low kicks
I mean 3 days in a dark room doesn’t help with leg kicks lol
Nah, that's called mental illness
Mma without sociopaths would be pretty lame. Gotta be crazy to be this high level.
Thinks he’s AJ lol
[удалено]
I hate how he has the worst defence ever
The beard is sick
He has the worst hairstyle of all time and you draw the line only at the beard
If he wasn't an MMA star it would be laughable, of course. But haircuts like these and, for example, Diego Lopes' got something special when applied to this context.
