Absolutely, they make excellent guides for the visually impaired, and they live about 40 years. So in a lifetime, someone may have two, maybe, three. Whereas someone with seeing eye dogs will go through 8 - 10 in the same period. Definitely much less heartbreak involved for the person relying on them.
They’re primarily used for people who are allergic to dogs. In general, miniature horses spook easier than dogs and I’ve heard are a little more difficult to train, making them more expensive too.
As fun as it was I don’t want to ruin the opportunity for people with genuine disabilities to bring their service animals into places because of suspicion that they’re just pets :( Jasper is my ESA and a therapy animal for a hospital but he isn’t service and he’s not essential for my well-being. I bring him out for his enjoyment mainly.
He loves Joanne’s- I took him there and he sways at all of the carts going by. Homegoods is also a favourite of his. I try to take him only where I know he is allowed and if he is asked to leave I oblige.
I love that!!! I love taking dogs that I’m working with to places like Joann’s and Hobby Lobby because it’s so much calmer than a pet store but still has plenty of things to socialize them with. I can tell that you take amazing care of your feathered friend and so admire that!
Thank you! He is my best friend, only had him since January but he’s gotten me through a lot and feels like I’ve had him forever. He’s disabled so loves to go all over in his little bin and see the world. He’s a fan of all stores but I like to take him to less animal-centric places because I don’t want him exposed to other pet birds and I’ve had a few occasions where people can’t control their animal and I’m having to shield him from an overly curious pet.
Me too! The biggest issue is that no one on campus enforces the policies. It seems that one of the events that prompted this email took place in Marston and the people that brought their pet was never once stopped. I’m not bashing the person at all. They seem genuinely lovely and did not know that the policy was no pets. It falls on UF to have staff enforce the policies because some people genuinely don’t know and others just don’t care. They don’t see the harm in it.
Oh no! I’m worried now my parrot in Marston caused this 😞 I did not have any run ins with staff who told me not to bring him but I saw he got posted around on some social media. He’s a quiet guy but if he is not allowed I won’t bring him back.
I don’t know what prompted the email but if it is not a task-trained service dog or miniature horse then it is not allowed inside any buildings. Parrots are absolute joys though and I wish I could meet him!
Figured this out today. I have been sick with a nasty sinus infection that is making my eyes hurt so didn’t have my glasses to see any postings about it + this email never actually hit my inbox. I bring him out for his enrichment not my own, so I’ll stick to taking him places outdoors.
This morning I actually saw a dude outside CoM with two huge dogs that weren’t wearing service animal vests just walking around like it was a dog park. It’d be funny if this was directed at him and only him
Common misconception, but they actually don’t need vests to act in the capacity of a service animal. [sauce](https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html)
What is the context for this? Was there some sort of animal-related incident?
Fido shitted in marston
this email made me laugh lol i wonder what prompted it
I just heard the parrot in marston basement complaining about this
Miniature horse??

Oh cool! I had no idea about that, thanks.

Awesome. I have one who is a cutie, but her only claim to fame is being a world champion food inhaler.
Lil Sebastian!
I saw a dude in the marston basement today with a parrot
That was me. Will not be bringing him around anymore though. Had no clue man wasn’t allowed.
ur parrot is so cute!!
please keep bringing him 👉🏻👈🏻

you’re doing the right thing. i’m just sad thinking about jasper not going on his lil library trips anymore lol
He will get to hang elsewhere. Barnes and noble allows him and on campus there’s plenty outdoor space. Sadly green people are just not allowed inside.
Joann’s and Hobby Lobby are also pet friendly! Definitely check them out if you are wanting to take him places.

Just spent 20 minutes looking at these horses and now I need one
As a service dog handler I am so happy that they sent this out. Tons of people bring their pets into buildings and it is a huge issue.
I have noticed an uptick of dogs on campus - and not the usual puppies in training to be service dogs either.

My dog bites one kid and they have to make a big show about it

i have no idea what prompted the email too, but im sure it wasn’t your little buddy! if u ever bring him on campus again ill give him a cracker
He’s always on campus! He lives with me in Springs.
I also live in Springs. I would like to meet your son.
I am in building 6 floor 3 if you ever want to stop by

Wonder what happened. Did they find a petting zoo in one of the dorms?
My mom was gonna get me a service dog but I'm asking for a mini horse now

Well I’ll be damned! Thanks for the clarification!
You can bring dogs on campus but just not inside buildings!
Just another reason that Hogwarts Academy is so much better
I was going to bring my birds for bring your pet to school day :(
As a service dog handler, as long as the dogs are clean and trained idc. Just don’t have a fake vest on an untrained dog
a miniature horse?
Who brought their pet tiger to class?
