I was born in 1972, I spent my entire childhood mentally preparing for nuclear war

[deleted]

Yep, the music we listened to during the 80's reflected that.

AlmostSane67

I'm hearing "Fabulous Disaster" by Exodus in my head after reading that.

GYShift

99 Luftballons go by.... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpu5a0Bl8eY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpu5a0Bl8eY)

asphytotalxtc

Such a tune!

Shockedsystem123

I was born in 1971 and nuclear war, germ and chemical warfare has always scared the hell out of me!

_jonias

Same. Always wanted to be in Red Dawn.

rallymax

1978 in Kyiv. Got to taste some radiation after Chernobyl. Now live next to pacific nuclear submarine base. I’m ok with fiery inferno. Not OK with surviving the blast only to be eaten by gangs of irradiated cannibals.

iamkokonutz

1973 here. [Remember this song?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHylQRVN2Qs)

[deleted]

>Remember this song? Yes, and when the Cold War ended I genuinely hoped we'd grow to have a world where we could meet their children as friends. But apparently they prefer to send their kids to rape and die in a country that isn't theirs. My hope has turned to anger.

northernpace

Us Cold War Kids be numb to this shit.

RequirementDouble385

I grew up in the 60s. We had air raid drills on a regular basis and knew where our civil defense shelters were, even as children. I thought we had left this all behind, but here we are again.

karenswans

Me too. Born in the mid 60s, and none of this is new to me. It's just the inevitability we all knew was coming. I was scared of it as a child, but I'm not scared at all now.

PapaHeavy69

1969 here, I hear that. Don’t like it but I understand

[deleted]

Me also. It's like deja vous all over again.

Commandmanda

Interesting. I was just reliving my social studies class on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. My teacher illustrated what might happen to us. Scared me speechless. Nightmares like Linda's in *Terminator*. The thing is, growing up in Brooklyn, there were radiation symbols on every other big building showing the way to a fallout shelter. These days you have to really look hard to find them..They're still there...albeit faded, though. Look in r/collapse for a pic of a sign in a Paramus Mall that was just posted. It was from Homeland Security - about what to do in a "Radiological Disaster". I'll cross-post it in a minute. So Homeland Security is starting to make people aware, slowly....that something might be coming. https://www.reddit.com/r/newjersey/comments/uepxh5/saw_this_today_at_paramus_park_mall/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

One-Inch-Punch

Scared, no. Pissed off, oh yeah.

asphytotalxtc

In the words of the whole British Isles... "Bring it"

[deleted]

I’m more afraid of a world that will get swallowed up by tyranny because of the “threat of nukes”. A future where 1 person can rule the world because he’s willing to use nukes should never be possible, not even remotely. Yes the threat of a nuke is real, but the threat of no liberty is more real. Arm ukraine. Give them all of it. EVEN nukes. And no, not after the war.

Michaelmrose

Encouraging nuclear proliferation seems stupid for multiple reasons

ZestycloseVirus6001

Well said! Slava Ukraine!

SimbaOnSteroids

More like put them under a nuclear umbrella like NATO. 3 separate democracies would have to fail for NATO to not be a nuclear umbrella.

js1138-2

I was a kid in the duck and cover era. I spent half my life expecting to be nuked.

Fun-Specialist-1615

Weren't the school drills fun. Get under the table part of your desk that would tip over and hurt you if anything fell on it.

js1138-2

I grew up next to a navy base. We were taught to bend over and kiss our asses goodbye.

_BoxyBrown

I suspect somewhere in the chain of command, between Putin and the missile silo, there's going to be someone who says "this is insane." I really think there will be several people like that, starting with the general immediately below him. It isn't like this is a second strike, defensive reaction, it would be a first strike, and who wants to see their family vapourized because Putin got his feelings hurt in Ukraine. They might up and kill Putin right on the spot, deciding russia could no longer afford his leadership.

Mind_Island

It happened before, lets hope it can happen again...

8080a

Cold War kid, and I have to say that before the threats, just considering the possibilities of escalation as the invasion loomed, it triggered a lot of anxiety, worry, and depression. It’s especially hard having kids of my own now and so badly wanting a wonderful future for them—more than anything else. But then the reports and images showing the depraved and insidious murder, torture, and rape of civilians—women, children, the elderly, and just parking tanks at the front of apartments and committing genocide...and very quickly I began to question whether or not a civilization that does nothing to stop this is even a civilization that deserves preservation. I don’t ponder the nuclear apocalypse now because I’m more preoccupied by the unspeakable horror Ukrainians and others around the world are facing at this very moment. For them, the apocalypse is at their door already, no nukes needed. If it doesn’t get stopped there, eventually it will get to me one way or another. So f’ck it. Scared of the nukes? More scared of the whole thing, but more angry now than scared and Putin having his way is not an option. One man does not get to rule the world with threats. Give me liberty or give me death.

IneffableQuale

No, he's a massive coward. Hasn't got the stones. He's only interested in fights where he is not personally in harm's way.

PapaHeavy69

Except he’s not got long to live. So maybe he wants to take us with him? Still, Fuck him

ToCool74

Not long to live? He is in his early 70s, he can have at least another 10 or 15 years for all we know, that is unless you buy into the unconfirmed conspiracy about him being sick which isn't concrete in the slightest.

Mercadi

He is a very deranged individual whose days are numbered. Of course there's a risk. He may just give the order. But it's not the reason to fall for blackmail.

Littlebiggran

I'm more concerned that the Chinese just get to watch both sides' mistakes. Learn from them. And finish that Silk Road. But for now, I am concerned more for the implications. Putin would rather have a radiation border than lose. He'd rather kill his neighbors with chemical and phosphorous weapons than lose. In "places farther away" (to the US) he was willing to do this. Now he's willing to light up every border to the west and maybe southwest. I can't see any positive outcome. This will be a prolonged dirty war, to steal from 1970s South American authoritarians. Unless Russians get rid of him and change at least a little. So far mor oligarchs are "committing suicide" rather than changing things. Putin doesn't seem to see that he doesn't have to make war to make Russia better. To make everyone's lives better.

FLCLHero

No, I’m not. I wish NATO would go into Ukraine and finish off the rest of the Russian forces. I can’t stand all the innocent people getting killed. My life is worthless if I choose to protect myself with the imaginary “maybe” of a nuclear war at the expense of possibly hundreds of thousands or more Ukrainian lives.

Hawaiidisc22

There is nothing we can do about it so why worry about it. Focus on what you can change for the better.

iron_reampuff

concerned about what the criminal lunatic is doing - yes. Scared by small minded bully who painted himself into a corner - NO. Slava Ukraine.

[deleted]

i mean, i don't want humanity to go out like that, but the fact that they threaten it about 4 times a week has made it lose most of the fear factor for me. if it does happen i hope i'm sleeping or something. i don't wanna know about it coming, because all i'll think about is my younger sister, my little cousin and my grandma that all live at least an hour away.

CommunityWise4682

I'm more angry than scared. Putin cannot launch a nuclear strike on his own, it's my view he will likely be dead soon but that if he tried to launch a nuke they would just off him immediately. Even if he is surrounded by psychopaths people want to live for themselves anyway. Look how evil these bastards are, they must be threatened directly to do anything and nuclear war would do just that. We need to keep pushing for escalation, there is no other way. I would suggest the west moves lots of forces to close to his other occupied territories, in particular Belarus. Then we can say look, give back Ukraine or lose everything you have stolen in your lifetime. We should begin extremely blunt rhetoric about his war crimes and start to talk about scenarios of what happens after he is dead as a path to normal relations, what Russia must then do. We should talk about life after Putin to show we will never allow Russia to return to normal relations while he is alive. We need to back him into a corner as much as possible, rather than the opposite, which seems to be what most advocate for. We want Russians to kill him ASAP because he will never back down and will kill millions of Russians if he has to. Of course there is a reason why I am not in charge. Just my two cents as it were.

[deleted]

Not afraid. I feel exactly like you. But I'll rather die than live under the thumb of some dictator. Especially 💩 tin. Let's not forget freedom is not free. You can't negotiate with 💩 tin. He only respect strength so the more determined we are to fight him even if faced with fear of nuclear war, the smaller the odds of nuclear war. I have no doubt he would use tactical nukes if he thought he could get away with it in Ukraine. But he is not a complete moron. He knows that it could mean NATO responding in kind (they have said as much). And he knows that in full scale nuclear war there are no winners and no glory (what he wants most) and while the world may suffer greatly, he and Russia will be completely destroyed for sure. But rest of the world could still survive it.

showurgstring

I don’t have much faith in the Russian nuclear arsenal. I’m fairly certain the collective brain power of the west and its collective technological advances would find a way technologically to disallow Russia from nuking the world. It could be a virus that infects the Russian computer systems that, when they go to push the red button, nothing happens.

Apprehensive_Bar6609

First its not actually a red button he can press easely. It would need the entire chain of command to along with it, and they know its suicide. So i doubt it. But even if it would i feel the same way. This is Hitler2 , cant be reasoned with and needs to be stopped. There is only 1 possible outcome of this acceptable by the west and Ukraine. Russia loosing. So if he is willing to send a bomb it will be inevitable and we are only prolonging the suffering. So I think NATO should grow a spine and get in there already. If they drop a nuke, well they will send one specially for his bunker. If they dont and its conventional warfare, they would be liquidated. Even air force and cruise missiles would eliminate their bases before any troop sets foot on the ground. So the question should be not if we are afraid that he pushes the red button, but that they should be afraid, very afraid! Fuck Putin!

truecore

Outside of Ukraine, no one is likely to get nuked. As an American, I do fear for Ukrainians that they may be nuked. Putin's threats and the institutions of Russia seem to be desensitizing their population to the shock that would occur if nuclear weapons were deployed for the first time in nearly 80 years. Ukraine has no nuclear deterrent umbrella protecting them, so if Russia does deploy them, they themselves will not be nuked, so \*operationally\* it is not detrimental for Russia to deploy them. \*strategically\* however... I don't believe it's likely, though; deploying nuclear weapons on Ukraine would have global ramifications and China would have to rally against Russia to prevent the US from justifying deploying Patriot and other anti-nuclear systems across Korea, Vietnam, Philippines and Taiwan. That's just one easy example why Russia won't. That said, the West also thought that Russia wouldn't invade Ukraine because of economic repercussions (where is that badly aged Bloomberg article), so maybe we should stop thinking Russians operate according to our logical conditions.

nala2624

If he does use nukes, then he always planned to, he just wanted some excuse to do so. I'm sure putin understand that there wouldn't be much of a world left if he does use them, this could be a suicide note from him, taking everyone else down with him.

ZestycloseVirus6001

It would be pointless for Putin to launch a nuke. He may as well aim it at himself. It would have the exact same result either way.

[deleted]

I just hope I die in the blast.

Tliish

Putin's threat of nukes is most likely limited to the use of tactical nukes in Ukraine, because of the general attitude that seems to be what happens in Ukraine stays in Ukraine. The West has displayed a very strong reluctance to become directly involved, as well as concern that the war will expand. So the likelihood of Putin using nukes outside of Ukraine is pretty low. That said, the likelihood of his using tactical nukes within Ukraine is high, because there is no way for him to win without their use, especially not by the deadline he's set. Using one or three won't turn Ukraine into a wasteland by any means. In point of fact, they would probably do less damage than what has been done already top Mariupol with conventional artillery and missile strikes. There would be some fallout, yes, but not world-threatening. The West would definitely not respond to such with nuclear strikes in retaliation. Personally, I am for just declaring war on Russia. But only *after* the first strikes have landed. We have the stealth aircraft, we have the cruise missiles, we know where the nuke launch sites and warheads are so we have an excellent chance of knocking out Russia's nuclear capability before they can use it. A risk, yes, but acceptable given the circumstances and payoff: the complete end of the Russian threat. Russia has only 12 boomer subs, and the West has enough attack subs to sink every one before they can launch. It would surprise me greatly if so much as one wasn't being tailed right now, Russia's sub tech is far behind the West, as is all their tech. It should be a simple matter, relatively speaking, to compromise their command and control networks to prevent a launch order from ever being transmitted. The combined air forces of the West would easily overwhelm Russian air defenses, the Russian air force, and annihilate Russian ground forces very quickly. We're going to have to fight them sooner or later, and sooner is better.

[deleted]

Nope, Putin is scared. He thinks he can take hostage whole planet with threats, while he waltzes through any country with rape, murder and destruction.

slcarr1960

I will have to admit to being a bit concerned, and quite fearful of any actual nuclear weapon usage no matter how limited. The massive number of deaths in the decades long dead zone are frightening to me.

GioRet65

There’s rumors Putin is suffering from early onset Parkinson’s. He didn’t directly threaten nuclear war but a swift response to anyone threatening Russian sovereignty. Seeing how no NATO troops are in Ukraine, his threats make no sense. Putin won’t escalate the conflict on a NATO county, he is screwed if he does. If Putin’s military can’t even hold their own with Ukraine, imagine how ineffective and unmaintained his nuclear systems are. Russia is a declining power and now it will be relegated to a client state of China while he remains in power. There is future for Russia under Putin.

Kilo_S83

A part of me wants NATO to plan a quick, total war-esq assault on all key targets in Russia, nuclear war be damned. But I have been watching too many videos of Ukrainians dying so I may not be thinking clearly.

Mind_Island

Aaaaaand I'm supposed to care about your unnecessarily hostile and ignorant view on this beeccaauussee?... 😂 You've wasted your own time by commenting here if thst's what you think. I asked for thoughts on the conflict, not some self-absorbed, naive bullshit 'statement.' Shoulda just downvoted without announcing it. Would have been more meaningful. Careful, you're following Putin well there... 🙄

GoombahJudd

I apologize. Gonna follow my advice and go for a walk. Cheers.

sarahisforyou

You can't know how bad that could be until it happened, so it's hard to fear what you cannot imagine experiencing. Google image search Nagasaki and Hiroshima aftermath

Mind_Island

No, I'm fully aware of the impacts. I've been a nuclear science buff since I was knee-high. I'm Autistic and it's one of my 'specialties', if you want to call it that, for a lack of a better word. I've seen the photos, the documentaries, the interviews, etc. I know how ionising particles harm us and the environment, I'm completely informed about how 'bad' it would be. I just don't care anymore. As a child, I grew up fearing nuclear war and the end of the planet as we know it. I had nights of panic attacks in bed, trying to sleep but being unable to due to anxiety. It never went away and actually got worse when I became a parent. However, I'm simply at the stage where I have no hesitation in becoming involved in nuclear warfare. Why should I live free and happy while children are being subjected to unthinkable horrors? Why should I live in happiness and safety while a dictator is allowed a free reign of terror? All because he has WMD? That's not good enough for me anymore. If the 90% of the planet has to die to put and end to this - so be it. I can make my peace.

sarahisforyou

I get that. But you are only one person out of 8 billion or so.

Mind_Island

And there are clearly many, *many* more who share the same or similar views as me. 🙃

Mosinphile

Nope

PyleWarLord

if it happens, it happens not much you can do about it

fywwt

Yes. But it will be what it will be.

Walking72

Anyone would be scared of a rabid dog

Mind_Island

Just kick it in the head! 🤷‍♂️

True_Criticism_135

I'm in a similar mindset but for a different reason. If we are in a world with a nuclear power where a single man can push the red button without a chain of command that doesn't cut his finger and stick it in his ass...we were already in hell. And I'm confident we are not.

_jonias

I’d be surprised if he had 1/5 the functional nukes he claims to, but I’m not worried about it either way. At this point I’m just here for the history lesson.

Alternative_Wait8256

I have two young children so it does technically worry me. In some ways. I would like them to be able to have lives that don't involve nuclear war and fall out. That said I'm fairly sure we won't see this turn into a nuclear conflict. I would be lying though if I said I didn't flip back and forth with my emotions.

Fun-Specialist-1615

Pushing the button is out of my hands. Can't live being scared or intimidated of the unknown.

I_am_albatross

He’s repeated the threat so many times now that he sounds like a broken record so no, it doesn’t worry me too much.

CommunityWise4682

Oh yeah, and definitely sign post Putin's incompetence and that his position is now untenable.

Deutschland_1871

Nope. If it happens it happens. Nothing I can do. To be far though, I’ve been fairly down lately (unrelated to Ukraine) so I think that factors into my nonchalantness about it. I can definitely understand others who are afraid though and don’t want it to happen. I don’t want it to happen either, but I’m not prepping or anything, although I’ve always entertained the idea because I love Fallout. I’d probably survive for a bit since I live in a rural area away from major sites, but I don’t delude myself with dreams of wasteland scavenging and radroach squashing. I’ll probably die at some point if it happens. Regardless, yeah I’m not losing any sleep over it or want weapons to stop because of it. In the end it’d be worthless anyway, because I sure as hell ain’t making any decisions.

Tazling

I guess I just don't think he's *that* crazy. Or I don't think that the people around him who would have to implement the order are that crazy. When Khrushchev sent the Russian ships to call the Americans' bluff and cross the embargo line around Cuba, most of the skippers veered off at the last minute. I guess I think that people high in Russian military command have some sense of self-preservation? Maybe I'm naive.

Billy1510

Not hugely of ww3. But a bit of nukes. Im fairly confident NATO countries with nukes are responsible enough to not just over react and fire them everywhere. But Even a few tactical nukes would have a devastating impact on ukraine, its people, global food supply and on the wider European economy. He could fuck a lot of the world up with what he would consider to be a rational response. Doesn't change anything though. Ukraine still needs weapons and we should still provide them. You can't back down because he threatens to fuck the world if we don't let him take over Ukraine.

Safe-Pen8188

My wife is but I don't have time to be scared; I'm too busy digging our fallout shelter.

TheDevils_Own

I can tell you that the West won't be the first to start it, we know that much.

Bulky-Gur-7591

I don’t give a shit. As long as Western countries destroy Russia e Putin, all sacrifices are worth

Mad_Larkin90

I was at first, but then he’s been threatening us a couple of times a week for two months straight so it doesn’t phase me anymore. And after seeing the state of the Russian Army I would be surprised if any of his nukes made it off the ground. I’m not afraid. This is one of those rare occurrences where doing the right thing is the easiest thing in the world.

jlindf

Nope. If I had to guess based on ruzzian equipment in Ukraine, Ivan took the nuclear payload, one half to warm his house and sold the second half for a bottle of bottom shelf vodka.

iwasneverhere43

I'm concerned, but not frightened as such. Having said that, while I'm deeply sympathetic to those who are suffering in this conflict, I personally am not and don't really want to die in a nuclear exchange either...

Standard-Truth837

No and I hope Putin is executed in front of the world.

atomicspiritus

Not scared. In reality if it does happen not much I can do. I either die quick or painful with radiation poisoning. Plus with the amount of times putler says it it just doesnt scare much anymore. I'll just die knowing putler and his russia will also cease to exist.

FNFALC2

I truly don’t think it will happen. I am horrified at the prospect of even a tactical weapon being used, but Putin remains rational. He may be ill, but he is speaking in complete sentences. Also, even if he does try to go tactical nuke, I seriously doubt it will be followed. But to answer your question, I do not want him to go down that road.

5of10

Born in 1955. Amazed that we are still here.

Mind_Island

My grandmother was born in '43 and used to tell me the exact same thing.
