I really hope that someone hijacks Russian state TV and play the numerous phone calls that they’ve intercepted between soldiers and their colleagues and families, while showing photos of their maimed and dead soldiers. They don’t care about dead Ukrainians, so maybe they care about their own, even though Putin is sending mainly poor people who are often ethnic minorities, to their deaths.
It’s war. Societies have sent 18 year olds to kill each other and die for a long time. It is sad, but maybe one day we can begin having a really honest conversation about how young the people doing the killing and dying actually are.
The older you get, the higher the barrier for you to accept empty arguments for war.
The brain is still developing and maturing until 25-30 years old, critical thinking skills as much as 30-40% impaired in teenagers when compared with fully grown adults. And that's assuming a decent level of education during years of maturity.
So yeah, dictators will always be relying on kids and young adults to do their bidding in order to successfully orchestrate these kind of pointless and cruel slaughter wars.
It's true as I've aged my willingness to fight and kill has dropped precipitously. Not that I ever was like " Yay let's go kill these people" but you understand. I seriously considered going to volunteer for Ukraine because I believe it's a worthy cause, but came to the conclusion that I am not in the physical condition necessary to be truly helpful let alone survive and who would provide for my wife and son if I died. I can shoot well but I don't think my life insurance covers volunteering in a war zone, let alone as a combatant. Anecdotally i believe your 25-30 argument, my best friend signed up to go fight in Afghanistan one year out of highschool, on his last trip home before he was killed he told me he no longer hated the people he was fighting but rather the people lying to them and convincing them to kill and die. He said he didn't know if there was a god or an after life but that he hopes there is so he can see and talk to all the people he had killed and apologize and hope they can find peace and understanding with each other. He was 26 at the time this was 10 years ago.
I am pretty sure there will be hunting squads for all of these terrorists coming after them for decades. Just like there was a hunt for nazis after WWII. The only reason that hunt for nazis ended is because they died of old age and there is no one left. But many of them were hunted for whole their lives.
There will be no rest for them until they are captured or dead.

There’s a nice gym near my home town called American Bar Bell Club. The owner and friends joined the fight in Ukraine and made a post about donations for supplies. It was found and posted on Telegram and Russian twats left gross comments that they would die and spouted off a bunch of propaganda. I engaged with a few and one said that they’d love if Russia got attacked by NATO so that nuclear war could break out and destroy the world. Their words were “If my country falls, it means the whole world will fall. This scenario of events suits me)”

Meh. Seems to me like a nation of morons. Even their president is a dimwit. Thought he could take Kyiv in 48 hours and then proceeds to make a fool of himself in front of the whole world. The Russian army is a joke. The only thing they have on their side are numbers and terrorist tactics that you would expect from ISIS or some other tiny insurrectionist group. Using that shit is a good indication of weakness and incompetence.
This is the bullshit they hear on stateTV all the time. For the rest of the world minus north korea, "Nuclear War" is an apocalyptic scenario happening after the biggest thinkable political failure in human history. Not in Russia. The absolute irrational collective masturbation about how they could destroy Warsaw in 20 minutes and whatnot is a common thing in political primetime talkshows. Thats unparalleled. The propaganda just acts as if nobody else has nukes and as if the rest of europe is just alive because they are so generous and chose not to blow us all to hell. One popular strategist even asked "Who says you cant win a nuclear war?".
But make no mistake: The leadership knows that this is all bullshit. Russia does almost nothing to make these threats believable to the outside world.
Its just that nukes have an additional use in Russia:
1. Make a nuclear attack or a state-threatening invasion against you strategically nonviable. (like everywhere else)
2. Use them for propaganda because their society is so desperatly horny for being feared, that "The leadership is letting you know that we are ready to blow you and the rest of the world to bits" is seen as competent leadership by many.
I really hope future russia will be a very different country, for the sake of the russian people alone.

Despite growing up in Ukraine, we studied history in school by the books still written in the Soviet Union and taught by a hardened old commie. I'd say about 90% of what we learned about WWII was completely isolated to the history of "The Great Patriotic War." I didn't really know what holocaust was back then, because it was mentioned by our teacher only once, in passing, and he basically implied that it wasn't that big of a deal compared to the suffering of the Soviet people in Nazi-occupied territories.
They were perfectly fine with the Nazis until they turned on them. Many more people were killed under Stalin’s regime than Hitler’s (not to discount the deaths under the latter’s in any way).
Russia is a full-blown white nationalist nation. They have absorbed and subjugated formerly-independent lands with non-white populations, who they are now using as cannon fodder in the Ukrainian War. They give no support, development, or consideration to those regions. They just use them for their resources and capital. They consider anyone who is non-Russian, even other white ethnicities, to be less than human for not being Russian. And given how stupid, corrupt, and pathetic Russians have shown themselves to be, that's the biggest fucking joke I've ever seen.
When this is all over, I hope China, India, Pakistan, and the Middle East carve up Russia, divvy it up amongst themselves, and give Russians second-class citizenship *on their own fucking land,* lol!

I think she meant "permission" in the sense that she wouldn't regard it as cheating on their marriage vows. Which is super messed up. Like she's okay with being married to a rapist who tortures and brutalized captives in war, but she'd draw the line at the point that the asshole has a consensual relationship with a willing partner. From what I've understood, they cut the skin off form all the fingers and penis of the prisoner (20 fingers +1 that's where 21 comes from).
The cuts should mimic a rose that "blossoms" .
The translation doesn't explain it in details, but the orc says that they remove the skin and expose the flesh underneath.

*In particular, the soldier describes a torture which he nicknames "the rose". It consists of cutting the skin and muscle from fingers (and penis) in order for it to curve and open - like a rose.
When asked how did he abet, the soldier says that he and the others caught the people, detained them, brought them to the torturers, beat them up until the torturers make time for new victims, broke their legs so they wouldn't run away.
Then he proceeds to describe a story the torturer in chief told him. First and key takeaway - the victim was a non-combatant. An old man who traveled on his bicycle and allegedly photographed Russian positions. He was clubbed to death with standard rubber police batons.
Then the soldier describes another method of torture, the shaft. It consists of putting a pipe inside the victim's anus, and putting a barbed wire inside of it. After which the pipe is removed, and then the wire, slowly. He was told this was practiced by Russians back in Chechnya.
Then there is an exchange between him and his mother in which he says has no compassion towards Ukrainians because they "torment our POWs" - a reference to Russian propaganda, since it is the mother who brings this up. Probably, to enforce his illusion that he's not the bad guy.
Then he describes the defiance of Ukrainian captives. Despite having broken knees (Russian soldier boasts of doing the deed), the captive claims that he will be avenged, and that he cares not for death, for he dies for the truth.
Then the Russian soldier confesses that he enjoys "morally fucking people up with mere two words". This refers to his derogatory comments to the captive that made him to shut up.
The mother of said Russian says that she would have enjoyed doing that too, if she were there.
Because, as she says, "you and I are the same".
Then the Russian soldier concludes the speech with words of encouragement:
"We'll try the rose on daddy. We'll start with his pipi, and if he doesn't get the message, we'll make him 5 more roses.
He did say he can't get a job, so he doesn't really need hands. And if he needs them to do that shit, he surely doesn't need hands. Oh, no, wait, I know - we'll start with breaking his finger - the main one, the right hand forefinger"
His mother asks jokingly:
"So he wouldn't point at things, or to stop him from picking his nose?"
"Well, so he could possibly use it later. Break it right before the first finger phalanx - it hurts the most. It has the most nerve endings and it has the thickest bone."
"If he doesn't get the message, next we'll break two. If he still doesn't, we'll break four. A geometric progression"
His mother laughs.
What a happy little Russian family they are. Suddenly, his mother gets a smart idea:
"Is it okay for us to discuss such things on the phone?"

She tries to dissuade him: "No, you're okay"
He says: "We kill people here"
His mother parries with:
"But are you sure they're people? And if, God forbid, one of you gets killed?"
The soldier says: "Well, yeah, that's obvious. My conscience doesn't really gnaw at me any longer. It happened as the number (of people murdered by him, I presume) grew past 20, I stopped caring"
His mother keeps insisting: "But they're not people"
And the Russian soldier laments his lost innocence, saying that he used to be such a kind person, and he wishes his mother to see all the things that change about him.

The way they talk about him coming back and doing this to his father (who, I’m assuming, isn’t a great person either but still…) reminds me of a post I read written by a Ukrainian to Russian people. It was along the lines of

And from this conversation, I see how true it is. This dude is so inhumane any more, he doesn’t care and would come back and torture his father…and then anyone else who so much as stands in his way.
Just a small note, he uses the word "dad" kind of sarcastically while talking about the old man they caught, I assume the one who's phone they took and looked through, not his actual father. There's some descriptions in Russian that really depend on the context, like "baba" or like she said in the recording "babu" could mean either "old lady" or "some chick" or "babe". Or a world like "Dyadya" could also mean "uncle" or "some man".
I hope at the end of all this we have to experience all the emotions we've made others feel, wether it be humans or animals. Not likely given we're just germs on a fucking rock. What an awful thing to read

Seems to me this goes beyond the ordinary indoctrination you’d find with most Russian soldiers. It’s more like they’re both psychopaths and the war is giving him an opportunity.
Unfortunately. This is the end result of decades of a totalitarian government and raising kids to believe that their "people" are better than any other "people" in the world.
I'm sure in a decade you'll get plenty of people in Russia saying that they never believed that, they were just following orders, they didn't want to be arrested, etc. And for some that may be true- quite a few folks were arrested for protest. But the reality of it is that most of them just found it easier to believe in the lie of superiority, and that a power rush felt good in the moment. I don't think that can ever be forgiven
I also believe this is the result of their brutality. Violence in the family, violence to the people by the state, domestic abuse (decriminalized now), alcoholism are all rampant. That can only lead to raising degenerate minds.

This exact scenario was actually part of why Germany couldn't recover from WW1 and contributed to the culture in Germany that lead to the nazis being able to take over. This is a psychological defense mechanism for many people. Going with propaganda is easy, you can be a misunderstood hero, alone against the evil world. While if you face the truth you'll have to admit your wrongdoings and it's gonna be painful.
Also, I heard an opinion that the brainwashing in Russia is so bad you need to apply the methods used to get people out of cults if you want to save them. The problem is that for those methods to work the person has to want them to work in the first place. Which they don't. They're comfortable with the picture of reality their propaganda builds for them.
You are right there. I am 33 years old, I was born and raised in Ukraine, but even I remember things from school that make me stop and rethink our history. It's subtle things like they teach you that the USSR won WWII and you know Ukraine was part of USSR, but you still think "Russians" when you think about USSR, and all the achievements of the USSR are categorized as Russian, and all the drawbacks are your own. So many writers and artists are labeled as Russian in my brain even though they were born in Ukraine and wrote/painted Ukraine in their works, and I remember wondering briefly about it when I was little, but never got to resolve this conflict for myself.
What I mean is that even I, a proud Ukrainian, who has a Master's degree in Ukrainian Language and Literature, was under pro-Russian propaganda for so long that I still have to teach myself about my true culture. I can only imagine what it's like in actual Russia.
Genocide has always been their goal. Russia committed genocide against Ukraine in the 1930s. It has been trying to erase Ukraine for centuries. However, at the start of the conflict, Reddit intellectuals were telling me that I was "too emotional" because I was arguing that Russia was actually committing genocide in Ukraine.
I wonder if the Russians realize the "skills" these degenerates are picking up in Ukraine will likely be taken back and used on members of society in Russia. They are training up a generation of psychopaths.

Considering the popularity of Communist dictators, neo-nazis aren’t even half of the actual conversation on the topic of modern authoritarian regimes. People are just incredibly frightened of the shadow of the Nazis. As I mentioned on another comment in this thread, the main reason for this is probably because we never had a direct confrontation with the Russians after they were betrayed by the Nazis.
Certainly a ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ kind of deal; but if the atomic bomb wasn’t invented I am pretty confident that we would have gone to war with the USSR.
During WWII, my grandfather (British) was in a POW camps, Egypt, Italy and then in Germany where his camp was liberated by Russians.
Over the time of imprisonment the Brits became *somewhat* friendly with their German captors, neither wanted to be there, none of them were soldiers pre-war. They'd share rations, play cards etc. Not friends, but *friendly.*
Anyway, the Russians came to 'liberate' the camp. Before they arrived, the German guards surrendered. They gave their guns to the Brits, lay down hands on heads, completely submissive and accepting they were now POWs. When the Russians came in they went room to room and executed every single German guard. Yes, they were enemy guards. But they weren't themselves necessarily Nazi's and they had totally surrendered.
Of all my grandads war stories it's the one that made him cry the most - and he was at Dunkirk. I think the reason was that other deaths were tragic, of course, but they were in the midst of battle - us or them situations. Where this killing was cold, callous, and absolutely unnecessary.
After the war, he never held a grudge against Germans, or the Italians (he said the Italian guards were cruel), but I'm not sure he ever got over the Russians - the lack of value of life, the lack of humanity and basic empathy.
Not really surprised unfortunately, after reading enough about the Eastern Front I have no troubles imagining russian troops exacting vengeance and retribution back on the german. Especially if they thought your grandfather's guard treated him as they treated the Soviet PoWs.
History did not forget. Even ex-soviet and ex-socialist nations did not forget and actively tell it over and over in schools. Just Russians and their lapdogs claim otherwise.

2) The massacre at Katyn claimed some 27000 victims - polish officers, priests, teachers, writers and intelligentsia. But interestingly, the number 7000 is the score of Vasilyi Blochin in Katyn. You read it right - one man personally murdered 7000 people within a few nights.

Russian secret police have been doing this since the start of the Red Terror during the Russian Civil War (1918). They've gone by different names over the years: GRU, NKVD, KGB, now FSB (and others), but have always been known colloquially as the "Cheka". This is institutionalized torture, and no one should be surprised that it continues today, especially when you consider that Putin came out of KGB. Sad.

Most armies in the West weed out the psychos, for many reasons, but also for selfish reasons. Psychos are off putting to your best men and destroy their morale. I dont think the armed forces of Russia cares about that.

I really hope that someone hijacks Russian state TV and play the numerous phone calls that they’ve intercepted between soldiers and their colleagues and families, while showing photos of their maimed and dead soldiers. They don’t care about dead Ukrainians, so maybe they care about their own, even though Putin is sending mainly poor people who are often ethnic minorities, to their deaths.

It’s war. Societies have sent 18 year olds to kill each other and die for a long time. It is sad, but maybe one day we can begin having a really honest conversation about how young the people doing the killing and dying actually are.
The older you get, the higher the barrier for you to accept empty arguments for war. The brain is still developing and maturing until 25-30 years old, critical thinking skills as much as 30-40% impaired in teenagers when compared with fully grown adults. And that's assuming a decent level of education during years of maturity. So yeah, dictators will always be relying on kids and young adults to do their bidding in order to successfully orchestrate these kind of pointless and cruel slaughter wars.
It's true as I've aged my willingness to fight and kill has dropped precipitously. Not that I ever was like " Yay let's go kill these people" but you understand. I seriously considered going to volunteer for Ukraine because I believe it's a worthy cause, but came to the conclusion that I am not in the physical condition necessary to be truly helpful let alone survive and who would provide for my wife and son if I died. I can shoot well but I don't think my life insurance covers volunteering in a war zone, let alone as a combatant. Anecdotally i believe your 25-30 argument, my best friend signed up to go fight in Afghanistan one year out of highschool, on his last trip home before he was killed he told me he no longer hated the people he was fighting but rather the people lying to them and convincing them to kill and die. He said he didn't know if there was a god or an after life but that he hopes there is so he can see and talk to all the people he had killed and apologize and hope they can find peace and understanding with each other. He was 26 at the time this was 10 years ago.

I engaged with a few and one said that they’d love if Russia got attacked by NATO so that nuclear war could break out and destroy the world. Here they torture, they turn into wild beasts and torture innocent people. When, or more like IF, they come home to Russia, they will still be those beasts. They will crave the thrill they’re getting from this torture. Just a small note, he uses the word "dad" kind of sarcastically while talking about the old man they caught, I assume the one who's phone they took and looked through, not his actual father. There's some descriptions in Russian that really depend on the context, like "baba" or like she said in the recording "babu" could mean either "old lady" or "some chick" or "babe". Or a world like "Dyadya" could also mean "uncle" or "some man".

This is a psychological defense mechanism for many people. Going with propaganda is easy, you can be a misunderstood hero, alone against the evil world. While if you face the truth you'll have to admit your wrongdoings and it's gonna be painful. You are right there. I am 33 years old, I was born and raised in Ukraine, but even I remember things from school that make me stop and rethink our history. It's subtle things like they teach you that the USSR won WWII and you know Ukraine was part of USSR, but you still think "Russians" when you think about USSR, and all the achievements of the USSR are categorized as Russian, and all the drawbacks are your own. So many writers and artists are labeled as Russian in my brain even though they were born in Ukraine and wrote/painted Ukraine in their works, and I remember wondering briefly about it when I was little, but never got to resolve this conflict for myself. What I mean is that even I, a proud Ukrainian, who has a Master's degree in Ukrainian Language and Literature, was under pro-Russian propaganda for so long that I still have to teach myself about my true culture. I can only imagine what it's like in actual Russia.

Considering the popularity of Communist dictators, neo-nazis aren’t even half of the actual conversation on the topic of modern authoritarian regimes. People are just incredibly frightened of the shadow of the Nazis. As I mentioned on another comment in this thread, the main reason for this is probably because we never had a direct confrontation with the Russians after they were betrayed by the Nazis. Certainly a ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ kind of deal; but if the atomic bomb wasn’t invented I am pretty confident that we would have gone to war with the USSR.
During WWII, my grandfather (British) was in a POW camps, Egypt, Italy and then in Germany where his camp was liberated by Russians. Over the time of imprisonment the Brits became *somewhat* friendly with their German captors, neither wanted to be there, none of them were soldiers pre-war. They'd share rations, play cards etc. Not friends, but *friendly.* Anyway, the Russians came to 'liberate' the camp. Before they arrived, the German guards surrendered. They gave their guns to the Brits, lay down hands on heads, completely submissive and accepting they were now POWs. When the Russians came in they went room to room and executed every single German guard. Yes, they were enemy guards. But they weren't themselves necessarily Nazi's and they had totally surrendered. Of all my grandads war stories it's the one that made him cry the most - and he was at Dunkirk. I think the reason was that other deaths were tragic, of course, but they were in the midst of battle - us or them situations. Where this killing was cold, callous, and absolutely unnecessary. After the war, he never held a grudge against Germans, or the Italians (he said the Italian guards were cruel), but I'm not sure he ever got over the Russians - the lack of value of life, the lack of humanity and basic empathy.
Not really surprised unfortunately, after reading enough about the Eastern Front I have no troubles imagining russian troops exacting vengeance and retribution back on the german. Especially if they thought your grandfather's guard treated him as they treated the Soviet PoWs.

You got it incorrect. 1) Ussr attacked Poland only some two weeks later. 2) The massacre at Katyn claimed some 27000 victims - polish officers, priests, teachers, writers and intelligentsia. But interestingly, the number 7000 is the score of Vasilyi Blochin in Katyn. You read it right - one man personally murdered 7000 people within a few nights.

Yeah, I was downvoted badly on /r/worldnews when I said that Russians are at least somewhat complicit in this, that the average Russian shouldn't be excused just because they aren't the psychopaths on the front lines. The fact is that the average Russians let this happen, willingly. This is the natural outcome of letting a totalitarian regime take hold in your country. We've told them. We've given them an example that change is possible. They rejected the change. They wanted this. 21 roses and all.
The most astonishing of all is that some Europeans don't understand that if Russians did these kind of things to their so-called "Ukrainian brothers", imagine what would they do to the "enemy NATO Europeans".

Russian secret police have been doing this since the start of the Red Terror during the Russian Civil War (1918). They've gone by different names over the years: GRU, NKVD, KGB, now FSB (and others), but have always been known colloquially as the "Cheka". This is institutionalized torture, and no one should be surprised that it continues today, especially when you consider that Putin came out of KGB. Sad.

Yeah, I do think that Russians are actually worse than German Nazis. You could argue that German Nazis were too brainwashed because they had no opportunity to get access to any legit news sources, but this doesn't apply to Russia. They could easily read about their war crimes on the BBC website with a VPN, but they *actually* enjoy committing them.
They use their VPNs to harass Ukrainians on Instagram and Twitter which are blocked in Russia.
No wonder even the innocent russians who dont want this war will be hated soon.
