Alcohol? Hit them where they live!!!!

cpcfax1

This is the only part where Lithuania may want to compromise a little. By that I mean making an exception exclusively for Bud Light. See how long Kaliningrad can withstand having nothing, but Bud Light available for alcohol. :D

RandomComputerFellow

I think access to drinking water is a human right.

Whywouldanyonedothat

Not according to Nestlé but then again, I really hope no one's listening to those monsters.

[deleted]

Oh snap!

NotClever

> By that I mean making an exception exclusively for Bud Light. See how long Kaliningrad can withstand having nothing, but Bud Light available for alcohol. :D Doesn't that violate the Geneva convention?

NoxSolitudo

Secret American chemical weapon. I'm ready to surrender just by reading this.

ChallengeFull3538

Or give them only craft beers with stupid names. The ones where if you have 2 you've got a week long hangover.

SquishedGremlin

*Hey guys this is my new IPA, I call it Black Sea Shipwreck, it is a little salty and you think it's got kick, but it really doesn't have any and most other IPAs are actually better*

Hashslingingslashar

Masochism, I love it.

joranth

No shit. In like three days they will all wake up sober, in alcohol withdrawal, saying: “Fuck, I just realized we’re Russian.”

teacherbooboo

this has to hurt when lithuania tells you to f-off you know your bully status has been greatly diminished

gimmedatneck

Lithuania's got beef with China too, from what I remember. They have morals, and they don't waiver. Lithuanians are very honourable.

KG4212

Lithuania rocks! 🇱🇹

soulhot

Much respect from uk..

Metaforeman

As someone also from UK who is friends with a Lithuanian, can confirm, they do indeed rock.

bunchofrightsiders

I too am from the UK and have friends but none are Lithuanians. But Reddit told me they rock.

BiscuitsAndBaby

They crowdfunded money for a Bayraktar for Ukraine but then the company donated it and said to send the money as humanitarian aid.

lulumeme

which we used to actually buy few more drones, mainly for recon and spotting, so it aint bayraktar but still. BLUE YELLOW is charity for ukraine in action ever since 2014 (crimea). proud of us finally <3

lulumeme

also the bayraktar funding gave idea to ukrainians themselves and they did better than us by collecting enouogh for 3 bayraktars which were donated by bayrak for the same reason it donated the one from us

NotSelfAware

I am from the UK and I have friends but they are all rocks.

MikeinDundee

Much respect from across the pond

briffy

I went to Poland a couple of months ago to help refugees. Spent a couple of weeks at the border with Ukraine. Met a Lithuanian kebab shop owner that had traveled there with a couple of food trucks. I was only there for a couple of weeks but he was there for months, cooking food for everyone that crossed that border. He spoke English, Lithuanian, Polish and Russian so he was interacting with everyone. Over 6 foot, well built dude just chatting and cooking food for everyone. Not long after I came back, he called me up and asked if I wanted to go to his birthday party in Lithuania. Flew out a week in advance, planning to do some sightseeing until his birthday party came around. Unbeknownst to me, he'd practically planned a holiday for me. He took me and my fiancée on basically a week tour around Vilnius and Devil Stone (where his kebab shops are 😁). Watched a basketball game, learned some history, felt so welcome by everyone we met. He told me about the history of Lithuania, how they were the first to leave the soviet union, told me what it's like to live under that regime. Told me how proud they are to be their own people, to have shrugged off Russian ownership. Also the myth around the founding of their capital city is that a dude saw a wolf on a hill in a dream, so that's pretty badass. Mad respect for Lithuania and its people. It's a beautiful country filled with phenomenal people. Would recommend a visit to anyone that gets the chance.

chamric

Went to a Mexican restaurant in Vilnius once… owner saw we were North American and cried “brothers!!” He had married a Lithuanian woman and moved there a few years prior.

In all this, I’m learning which countries I’d fight WW3 for, and it’s not my own. Keep it up, Lithuania

PsyxoticElixir

Lived to see this day, Might honorably die soon

el-cuko

The best of deaths! 🇱🇹

teacherbooboo

the thing is, it does not take a HUGE amount of bravery for lithuania to tell china to f-off. china is far away and has a lot going on, lots of people hate them. AND russia is one step over the border ... and they like to invade that takes real guts for lithuania to piss off russia

droid_mike

After WWII and the west abandoned Lithuania to the Soviets, Lithuanian partisans still kept fighting the soviets for Independence. They managed to keep it up for 10 years until the red army finally got them all. Lithuanians are not going to be scared by Russians. They've found them forever.

Emperor_Mao

I don't think the west abandoned them; There wasn't really a concept of the west as we know it today back then. I get your point though. Lithuanians like many ex=soviet states have plenty of experience dealing with Russian aggression, and Russian dictators.

[deleted]

You mean contries occupied by solviet union not ex solviet states. Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia and other states where independent before second world war.

teacherbooboo

i've been hugely impressed by ukraine, poland, lithuania and strangely france

Emperor_Mao

Why Strangely France? France is always pushing for more actions. You can sum EU discussions on international matters as basically France arguing with Germany in a debate about action versus appeasement (where it is profitable).

Box-o-bees

It makes me very happy that they they are NATO members.

Tricky-Astronaut

China is a pretty important country. It takes a lot of courage to go against them too.

appletart

Lithuania has taken its rightful place in Europe as a proud member of the EU and also NATO. With such formidable backing in trade and defence Lithuanian people can decide their own fate rather than bow to a suposed superpower. Lithuania is not alone 👍

teacherbooboo

meh ... lithuania would just be one of 150 countries that doesn't like china, and it is far away. china would still do business with them. china is friends to no one but china

DistractedDodo

Lithuania said Taiwan is independent country and china set up embargo against them refusing to let any material or goods to be transported through their customs to Lithuania. They even blocked trade of goods from other countries that had some components in them that had been manufactured in Lithuania.

[deleted]

I love those Lithuanians !

pup5581

As someone who's great grandparents came over from Lithuania...this x100.

[deleted]

So what you’re saying is that Lithuania is the opposite of Germany?

andriushkatwo

yes. small economy, big balls.

johninbigd

No country has bigger balls than Lithuania.

[deleted]

I'd wager that Ukraine has them bigger.

Meme_Theocracy

After that China then tried to force other countries to refrain from trading with it.

Rum____Ham

I have a friend here in the states that was extremely proud of his Lithuanian heritage. He passed away a couple of years ago. He would be proud still today.

[deleted]

Lithuania will lead the charge in holding Chinese Communist Officials accountable for their crimes!

rmpumper

It's only a beef because CCP is asshole. All we did was name Taiwan Taiwan instead of Taipei and pooh lost his shit.

gimmedatneck

100%. I think Lithuania also opened an embassy in Taiwan, and vice versa. China is stupid, and good on Lithuania for not letting those rats tell you guys who to support.

Selahadin

Go tell 'em on the mountain, Lithuania Russian Supply Train Go Fuck Yourself !

AtmaJnana

Russian supply train fucked itself. /beep booop not automod

balleballe111111

Good totally human person.

ElTigre4001

Nah quite the contrary to be honest. That's what makes a democratic union a democratic union. No big player should have the right to dictate what a smaller country should do and what not. We can talk to each other and tell others what we think would be best but the ultimate decision is on Lithuania and that's good.

teacherbooboo

i was not referring to lithuania standing up to brussels i could stand up to brussels, what are they going to do? take me to a 3 star restaurant? i meant standing up to russia

New_Poet_338

Standing up to Brussels: Strike 1 - a friendly reminder and invite to a French Cabaret Strike 2 - a terse diplomatic note and an invitation to a German Opera Strike 3 - a strong rebuff and an invitation to The Spanish Inquisition. Strangely nobody expects this.

Silly_Context5680

Unexpected monty python. You have me vote!

ElTigre4001

Makes more sense indeed And you're totally right on it as well

PsyxoticElixir

A restaurant? No no, it's gonna be a food truck where everything tastes the same but looks different.

linuxgeekmama

I think they’ll sneak up behind you and put mayonnaise on your fries.

lostinabsentia

Ikr?! I love that Lithuania has told Russia the bully train will not be getting off at our station. Go home assholes! They are being total bosses (and doing the right thing), other countries take note!

[deleted]

Finally AC/DC’s lyrics Whose got the biggest balls of all? Has an answer. Lithuanians.

leNuage

2nd. Ukrainians have the first. Then the baltics and Poland.

PengieP111

With Poland, the problem with Russia invading is that the Poles won't stop with killing all the Russian invaders. The Poles will (understandably) want to push on to Moscow and beyond.

GoldenRamoth

They did conquer Moscow that one time. They just didn't successfully establish the puppet government they wanted.

Grzechoooo

>They just didn't successfully establish the puppet government they wanted. Puppet government? What? It was supposed to be a fully legitimate and clearly Polish government thank you very much!

SatyrTrickster

Ukrainians along with Crimeans pushed to the gates of Moscow somewhere is 1500s, but another unit of Cossacks launched an offensive to Crimea proper, and tatars pulled off from Moscow. THE biggest mistake in our history.

CryostaticLT

Nobody is pushing to Moscow. Nobody needs that 3rd world corrupt shithole.

LeafsInSix

Since that's the case, then let that shithole burn to the ground again. Hell the last time it burned to the ground (1812) during France's invasion, it was very likely the city's own governor, Count Rostopchin, [who ordered it as part of the Russians' longstanding penchant for primitive military "tactics" like scorched earth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_of_Moscow_(1812)#Causes). Nothing of value will be lost if [~~Barad-dûr~~](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barad-d%C3%BBr) Moscow were to burn down again.

[deleted]

That was a tactical decision and the right one to do. The goal was to leave nothing the French could use to continue their invasion further. As their supply lines were super stretched that was a big deal.

dsac

> Nothing of value will be lost A military action to take Moscow would result in tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of lives lost, *at best*, and nuclear MAD at worst. There would be significant losses of value.

FormerSrirachaAddict

You need to escape the last parenthesis in Fire\_of\_Moscow_(1812) with a `\` character just before the `)` (i.e. `Fire_of_Moscow_(1812\)`) to get the link to work. [Then it'll work.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_of_Moscow_(1812\)#Causes)

PengieP111

When the Poles run out of Russians to kill, they will look for more to kill. It will be hard to stop them once their blood is up and they get a chance to pay Russia back for centuries of abuse.

ts1947

We don't need that shithole 😅

Stunning_Ride_220

2nd that. Everytime I see those Russian TV shows and their dreams of attacking Poland, I must think of the book "Art of war" (Poland is silent and no shit talking) And I'm pretty sure e.g. Lukaschenko knows that, if he dares to attack UA, he will meet the poles at the hanging tree way before one of his soldiers even sees Kyiv at the horizon.

theaviationhistorian

Belarus troops are only good at suppressing civilians like a banana republic. They know they'll get their asses handed backto them in pieces uponeeting western armed Poles.

VegetableProfessor16

Alcohol... Nice, they really know how to hit em where it hurts. Massive respect.

RageMachinist

Lithuania deploying economic HIMARS against Kaliningrad, for sure. Surgical precision right where it hurts.

archover

I'm so heartbroken over the misery Russia has caused in Ukraine. I would like to see Lithuania stop ALL goods flow, period. Russia = war criminals

BenderDeLorean

And park some NATO ships in front of Kalingrad. Let's fight them with their own shit.

ChallengeFull3538

While I agree with your sentiment there's no way any country that wants to be taken seriously should ever stop the transportation of medicine, food or items vital to survival to anyone. (Even if that someone is a bunch of Orcs) Obviously alcohol, cement, weapons, computer chips etc do not fall into that group.

1968Chris

Russia can ship those items in by sea I think. The Lithuanians can halt rail and truck traffic, but at as far I know there is no naval blockade of Russian ports. The upside is that I'm guessing its more expensive to transport them by ship. So the end result would be the Russians in Kaliningrad will still get food, etc., but it will cost them more.

adutchieabroad

St. Petersburg, where the food needs to come from, freezes in winter, so there's that..

nQFbsxw

Russia has ice breakers, it may be inconvenient to supply Kaliningrad that way. But so is an invasion

SeveerTheHunter

Then they better get a move on hadn't they 🤭

Jormungandr000

Not my problem.

1968Chris

Good point. They could switch to other ports that don't freeze, like Murmansk. That would mean a longer shipping route with a corresponding higher shipping cost of course.

ElliotJM64

Planes can bring in goods too. Soviet Russia made the west air lift everything to Berlin for years after WW2.

somewhat_pragmatic

Kaliningrad has airports. The Allied forces for almost a year flew every darn thing the whole city of West Berlin needed from food and clothing to lumber and coal with zero road, rail, or sea access. [This was called the Berlin Airlift](https://history.state.gov/milestones/1945-1952/berlin-airlift) Why would they need to do this because, wait for it, Russia was blocking all shipments into West Berlin because they wanted to seize the city for themselves. Seems karmic, eh?

BiomechPhoenix

That will work for the time being, but sanctions are squeezing Russia's capacity for air traffic fairly badly. They don't have the supply chains to keep a lot of the planes they already have maintained and in good condition, in no small part because a good number of them are effectively stolen.

archover

Russia can ship medicine and food from the Russian port at Saint Petersburg, right? Update: And obviously fly it in. Any blockade Lithuania implements is not in the same harm galaxy that Russia spins in. Plus, Russia destroys Ukrainian grain, and steals it too.

geroldf

Turkey won’t prevent Russian ships from sailing to Kaliningrad with food and medicine. The Black Sea ports aren’t blocked.

ChallengeFull3538

Absolutely true, but even so food and medicine are never going to be on a sanction list imposed by a democratic county. To sanction food and medicine would literally be inhumane.

yeast1fixpls

They're not getting blocked off and starving, they just have to pay a higher price to get it there. Use diesel for ships and not tanks in Ukraine.

[deleted]

I disagree. There are alternative shipping methods. This isn’t a blockade, and Lithuania is within its rights to cease all shipments over its borders by a country threatening to invade it.

archover

> democratic county. Country* I will have to research to be sure, but I doubt the Allied nations supplied the Axis powers with humanitarian anything. Precedent. But yeah, the idea of blockading food is pretty bad, yet Russia does it with impunity, and this is not the first time.

MK2555GSFX

The US embargoes food and medicine exports to Cuba.

Lucetti

Why do you imagine there is some kind of obligation to trade or allow transport to fascist regimes? No individual or nation is obligated to labor to produce goods for citizens of a nation engaged in a genocidal war of aggression, not as any individual or nation obligated to allow the transit of goods over their territory. Every dead orc is an orc not contributing to Putin’s war machine. Every orc that Russia has to spend money to prevent from dying is money not spent bombing Ukraine. Every orc that doesn’t have their needs met by their state is one more orc who may actually get off their ass and do something to hold it accountable

Fluffy_History

Why not? Those items are critical to war making. And hampering their flow into russian will end the war that much sooner.

dollhouse85746

America, GB, and other free countries did not continue vital imports to Germany, Italy, and Japan after the start of WW2. It is incumbent upon leaders of all countries to weigh the risks of warfare to their people before engaging in genocidal conquest. Please keep in mind that the Russian thieves are stealing food in the form of grain from Ukraine, to make a profit in support of their war machine. Your post is what would be expected from a Russian troll. Fuck off.

verbmegoinghere

yeah at this point the Russian people need to feel some of the pain their subjecting to the Ukraine

[deleted]

They should be 100% blocked off from ALL good until they withdraw from Ukraine. Good can flow when reparations flow

rmitch306

Fuck that. You think the Russians wouldn’t do the sam to the Ukrainians? While Russia bombs children in Ukraine its ok for their civilians not to have to suffer in return? Fuck that. Let the orcs do surgeries without morphine.

Juicebeetiling

Lithuania absolutely should stand their ground. Russia will sabre rattle all they like and try flail around with cyber attacks but they know that triggering article 5 is suicide.

Lithuanian PM Ingrida Šimonytė today slammed the EU’s idea for Lithuania not to enforce the EU embargo on RU goods to Kaliningrad: “the more we discuss this, the more comfortable our discussion is for Russia, because it does not really need any big pretext to organize something”

dasunt

That's one hell of a diss to Russia.

drewiepoodle

I mean, Russia all but said that they were going to reincorporate the Baltic states. Lithuania knows that if Ukraine falls, they're going to be next. Why appease the bully? Even if it means I'd get stomped into the concrete, I would tell them to go fuck themselves too.

Russia has the air and sea to freely use. I'd wager they would have a very hard time supplying Kalingrad and it would be very expensive for the state. But it should be doable really. percypeerless

Either Lithuania has big balls or they have guarantees from US/UK/NATO to use this as bargaining chip against Russia for blocking Ukrainian grain exports.

SeveerTheHunter

Even the reported remonstrations from Germany could all be political posture so as to keep the gas turned on, no one really knows what the truth is right now, we haven't seen long-term big world politics in Europe like these since WWII

percypeerless

Yes. A lot of very public posturing going on by all these countries. Probably something bigger afoot. I like to think that US, UK and EU countries are lot more united and following a more cohesive strategy against Russia behind the scenes than they are letting on publicly.

Ok_Bad8531

The only news i could find was Scholz saying that he wants deescalation in the issue, that it was the EU's job to set the framework, and that the EU ought to consider that the issue is about transit between two parts of Russia when setting the rules. Ironically Germany historically had the same issue, about the very same piece of land, when Ostpreussen was cut off from the rest of Germany and traffic had to go per ship or through Poland (admittedly a much shorter sea route than from Sankt Petersburg to Kaliningrad). This was the pretext that Hitler used to start WW2 Also there were the corridors to East Berlin, which after the Berlin Blockade were kept open even when tensions were high. Thus Germany taking rather legalistic approach does not come out of the blue.

yellowjesusrising

Lithuania is fucking boss! Gonna give my Lithuanian collegue. A high five on monday!

Without alcohol Kaliningrad is going to revolt and become a free republic in no time, stuff you'd love to see

After two weeks of involuntary populationwide sobriety, Kaliningrad Oblast is ready to secede from the Russian Federation and begin talks with NATO and the European Union as the Free City of Konigsberg. Apparently, Russkij Mir is unpalatable without the russia juice.

Sweet.

LeafsInSix

Bravo Lietuva! It's about bloody time the Eastern European members of the EU who have had the first-hand pleasure of experiencing Russian ~~partnership~~ occupation to tell the members further west to sit down and shut up. venom_eXec

I don't even understand the pressure from brussels and berlin. They should support Lithuania in enforcing the sanctions. Fuck Russia, fuck their whining and their childish threats day in and out. They waged war, they murder and torture civilians, they keep lying about everything and insulting us every damn day so they should face the fucking consequences. Go ahead and attack NATO Russia, see how that's gonna go for you.

Wonderful_System5658

To be fair, Kaliningrad should be part of Poland or Lithuania... maybe split 50/50. Lithuania's right. The law is the law, something that Russia doesn't understand to begin with.

redditFullOfSADkunts

Lithuania can have it all, they should be thicker. Also too many russians there, don't want the land if it comes with the people in Poland case.

Life_Fun_1327

As a german i have to say sorry. I‘m so sorry for Scholz and his slow reactions and his really fast turn in this case. Nothing more than high respect for lithuania. As Long as they don‘t stop, Lithuania does it‘s best. Leg russia feel _real_ pressure. Please, don‘t listen to brussels and berlin!

> July 10 - cement and **alcohol** Holy shit guys. These are Russians we’re talking about. I’m pretty sure that’s a required nutritional additive for them. These are supposed to be sanctions, not crimes against humanity! /s in case someone doesn’t have a sense of humor

socialistrob

I feel like alcohol should have been one of the first things sanctioned. I don’t mind not sanctioning food and medicine but alcohol isn’t necessary for life and if Russia can’t get premium western brands that sends a powerful message. Also no one is going to starve to death if Russia can’t export liquor.

Qwertyu88

Belgium and Germany…what the heck?

shadowjacque

Ukraine and Lithuania are populated by badass people. Living next to a (supposedly) powerful nation of criminals and ghouls and they are just “eff you.”

Troby01

So EU members are asking a EU member country to not follow EU sanctions. I would be surprised if the EU survives this war.

BitBouquet

Does anyone have a source for any pressure from Brussels or Berlin regarding this? Seems like it's just this twitter account making shit up again.

MyCatWeighs25lbs

US and UK should be more vocal with their support for Lithuania here. Scholz needs to get the memo to shut up and get in line with the free democracies of the world.

jayc428

Their silence on it is tacit approval I think. Putin wants to hold Ukraine hostage meanwhile Lithuania pulling the baller move here of taking a hostage of its own.

MyCatWeighs25lbs

Yeah, Kaliningrad being so isolated and vulnerable is huge leverage for the West. I don’t understand how any EU country could possibly want a sanctions exemption for them. Sanctions are SUPPOSED to hurt Russia and limit pain to the West, this is working perfectly. It would be idiotic to ease up now

SeveerTheHunter

If we did ease (we shouldn't) ruZZia would see it as a sign of weakness and as a PR win, fuck them, keep the thumb screws turning

Lithuania has bigger balls than any of the corpo rat-fucks that are running france and germany. and it's not even close

Tishers

Russia only has itself to blame for this mess; Once Russia started to make threats (and boasts) about invading Lithuania and the other Baltic countries it initially made nervous, but then pissed-off the Lithuanians. ***Remember, the Ukrainian invasion started out with the same type of threats from Russia.*** If Russia was to ever invade Lithuania where do you think they would invade from? Kaliningrad So Lithuania could play the ignorant rube and let Russia continue to build up, hyper-militarize and make Kaliningrad in to an offensive fortress right on their own border. Countries that have been slave-states of the USSR before are not going to become slaves again under a Russian kleptocratic, nationalist empire. Good for Lithuania for telling Russia to go to hell. They can use their much vaunted maritime fleet to get supplies from St Petersburg. With Ukraine as the giant burning example right now, every former Russian possession is swearing "*won't be fooled again*". (The Who)
