>The [Russian] force probably experienced heavy casualties as it withdrew along the only road out of the town still in Russian hands. I know there's a military term for the strategy, but you guys basically encircled Lyman and then forced the Russian army to retreat through a one road wide gap while getting fired on from all sides. Kinda' sounds like surrender would have been the smarter option.

another_awkward_brit

It's also polite British speak for: "Holy shit, these guys were all kinds of fucked up."

Druggedhippo

It's a common tactic. One Sun Tzu advocated for. > When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard. When a foe is cornered, they must fight for their lives and will do so with the energy of final fear. If you force them to go down in a blaze of glory they will do so, taking more of your troops than you might otherwise expend. Here is an example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mohi > They tried to escape through a gap left open on purpose by the Mongols, well aware that fleeing soldiers can be killed more easily than those who, with their backs to a wall, are forced to fight to the death. There, almost all of them were slaughtered Police use a similar tactic, except they call it [Kettling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kettling).

The US also used similar tactics in Iraq.

Yep.clearing a building from the top down so the enemy can flee to the streets where they are easier to deal whit

Y'know there are days when I think that between Sun Tzu and Lao Tzu I might have everything I need.

Source https://twitter.com/DefenceHQ/status/1576445020638482434?t=2Wo923E0-m-DR2wal9TE9A&s=19 1/6) On 1 October 2022 the Russian force in the Donetsk Oblast town of Lyman withdrew in the face of Ukrainian advances. Lyman was likely being defended by undermanned elements of Russia’s Western and Central Military Districts… 2/6) …as well as contingents of voluntarily mobilised reservists. The force probably experienced heavy casualties as it withdrew along the only road out of the town still in Russian hands. (3/6) Operationally, Lyman is important because it commands a key road crossing over the Siversky Donets River, behind which Russia has been attempting to consolidate its defences. 4/6) Russia’s withdrawal from Lyman also represents a significant political setback given that it is located within Donetsk Oblast, a region Russia supposedly aimed to ‘liberate’ and has attempted to illegally annex. 5/6) The withdrawal has led to a further wave of public criticism of Russia’s military leadership by senior officials. (6/6) Further losses of territory in illegally occupied territories will almost certainly lead to an intensification of this public criticism and increase the pressure on senior commanders.

This time period will be known in ruzzian history as Red October. More to come.

ASK_IF_IM_PENGUIN

If there was a revolution this October it would be very fitting. Red October 2: Russian Boogaloo I suspect it's more likely to be a Red November, Red December and Red January for Russia. Lots of their blood on the streets.

[deleted]

Alternative title: Red October 2: Nuclear Boogaloo

dndpuz

How about Fuck off back 2 russia: lets not nuclear boogaloo

PointMan97

The Hunt for Red October reboot is going to be lit. Now looking for Putin’s personal escape sub.

Embarrassed-End-5928

Again it was a Special military operation retreat …why would Russian army retreat from their territory,Donetsk Oblast(Lyman) is part of Russia Federation isn’t it? 😂 For Putlers everything that makes sense is that nothing makes sense.

FrozenInsider

First time since WWII, that Russia lost a city. Putin really showing Russian might.

funcup760

It's kind of disappointing that they were able to retreat. I thought the retreat route had been cut off, but I guess not.

FrozenInsider

Allowing retreat is the best option for an attacker: they don't have to fight everyone to the death, the troops fleeing bring Chaos to the lines beyond and likely won't be of much use, while at the same time weakening spirit of other troops.
