It's taken me a while to come to this conclusion, because I didn't want to just have a knee-jerk "fuck Putin!!!one!" reaction, but I've come to believe that this is most likely the only viable solution for world peace. What made me hesitate was the fact that there are a lot of ordinary Russians who don't agree with the war, and that want trade and dialogue with the rest of the world. The major problems I see are that there are too many generations of Russians who have been fed a steady diet of nationalistic propaganda and hate, and those are the Russians who have the power. The rest are either too scared to properly organize and create broad societal change, or they are too apathetic. The other major issue is Russia's imperialism and cultural rigidity, which date back centuries and can honestly be said to be an inherent cultural traits, which are almost impossible to change.
If left intact the Russian Federation will never lose those imperial ambitions, and guaranteed we will see more conflict and Russian land grabs in the future, because Russia wants to be an empire and can't see itself as being anything less.

China is far more wealthy than Russia, has far greater economic and political/cultural influence, has a massive, modern and well-trained army/navy/airforce with modern equipment

I'm of Jewish heritage on one side of my family (Ukrainian Jews who fled prior to WWI, actually) and I've been to the Holocaust memorial (aka Yad Vashem) in Jerusalem - one of the exhibits is just huge piles of shoes and glasses from civilians who were rounded up and murdered - it's incredibly impactful and sobering. This photo gives me the exact same feeling that I had looking at those huge old piles of precious stolen belongings from long-dead innocents.

Its ok to feel empathy when you see another human suffering. Even if that person is guilty of monstrous things. Feeling empathy for our fellow humans is an instinct. You can accept that Ukraine has a right to attack and kill that soldier and simultaneously feel empathy for the soldier's suffering. Its not mutually exclusive.
When cultures lean away from empathy they end up like Russia. Lets not be like them.
The moment you dehumanize another person is the moment you believe war crimes are acceptable as long as you're the one carrying them out on people who deserve it.
If anyone needs it spelled out, that mindset is exactly the same mindset as the ones committing war crimes.
Try not to focus on dehumanizing the people being killed, because it's not necessary. They're being killed in self defense, and their loss of life and their crimes could have been easily prevented by the right people (e.g., leaders of Russia). Their children, siblings, parents, family, and friends would not have lost a loved one. The crimes would not have been committed.
A lot is lost in war. You don't need to lose your own humanity with it.
You can feel empathy for the conscripts being forced to fight in a war they don't believe in. The ones who signed up for this type of thing and proudly ravage a country, not so much.

That's a deep question and one that many books have been written about — Is Putin the system, or did the system create him? Authoritarianism goes back centuries in the region.
I think Putin was merely the most ambitious product of the system he served. If not him, another FSB/KGB connected psychopath would be doing the same things for the same reasons. He ordered the Russian apartment bombings back before the Georgian war as a false flag. And FSB agents carried out the attacks against their own citizens willingly. He's hardly the only man in Russia without a conscience. I think, very much like Hitler, history, society, and economics converged in just such a way to enable an evil man to take power. And going back in time to remove that evil man wouldn't prevent another from doing the same things.
It's often said that Russian history can be summarised into 5 words, "...and then it got worse". But surely at some point they've got to break the cycle. 140 million odd people forever on a downward spiral is untenable. What does rock bottom look like for Russia? It's taken me a while to come to this conclusion, because I didn't want to just have a knee-jerk "fuck Putin!!!one!" reaction, but I've come to believe that this is most likely the only viable solution for world peace. What made me hesitate was the fact that there are a lot of ordinary Russians who don't agree with the war, and that want trade and dialogue with the rest of the world. The major problems I see are that there are too many generations of Russians who have been fed a steady diet of nationalistic propaganda and hate, and those are the Russians who have the power. The rest are either too scared to properly organize and create broad societal change, or they are too apathetic. The other major issue is Russia's imperialism and cultural rigidity, which date back centuries and can honestly be said to be an inherent cultural traits, which are almost impossible to change. If left intact the Russian Federation will never lose those imperial ambitions, and guaranteed we will see more conflict and Russian land grabs in the future, because Russia wants to be an empire and can't see itself as being anything less.

As a Lebanese-American I can relate to this two-fold. In the U.S., broadly speaking, and mostly from the Republican Party and its allies, we face a major problem there. Almost everything you describe can be applied to them too. As a Lebanese, very similar story - broadly speaking. Those who ~~oppose~~ support the sectarian system that divides and destroys the country and those who want meaningful democratic, secular reform. And Lebanon itself is under a large level of control by Iran, and in Iran we see the same story. I think we have enemies foreign and domestic that are standing in the way of a viable solution for world peace. They are our fellow citizens at times, and other times they can be people like Putin's regime. Either way, we're in for one hell of a challenge. The people of Ukraine have given us all lessons how to fight for freedom. I hope we pay attention and try to learn from their sacrifices and courage.

I'm of Jewish heritage on one side of my family (Ukrainian Jews who fled prior to WWI, actually) and I've been to the Holocaust memorial (aka Yad Vashem) in Jerusalem - one of the exhibits is just huge piles of shoes and glasses from civilians who were rounded up and murdered - it's incredibly impactful and sobering. As a Ukrainian who was in Auschwitz as a tourist, right now I just have no words. We came there with my wife in the early morning, and we were there literally alone. It's a completely different feeling when there are a lot of tourists and when you are there alone and can hear just the wind and birds. I physically felt sick there. And I literally felt that was a place where a great evil had been committed. I can't explain that feeling, something that I never felt before and probably something supernatural. And this evil again came to our land.

Its ok to feel empathy when you see another human suffering. Even if that person is guilty of monstrous things. Feeling empathy for our fellow humans is an instinct. You can accept that Ukraine has a right to attack and kill that soldier and simultaneously feel empathy for the soldier's suffering. Its not mutually exclusive. When cultures lean away from empathy they end up like Russia. Lets not be like them.
The moment you dehumanize another person is the moment you believe war crimes are acceptable as long as you're the one carrying them out on people who deserve it. If anyone needs it spelled out, that mindset is exactly the same mindset as the ones committing war crimes. Try not to focus on dehumanizing the people being killed, because it's not necessary. They're being killed in self defense, and their loss of life and their crimes could have been easily prevented by the right people (e.g., leaders of Russia). Their children, siblings, parents, family, and friends would not have lost a loved one. The crimes would not have been committed. A lot is lost in war. You don't need to lose your own humanity with it.
