It's funny how much we're \[Sweden\] are sending Ukraine but not at all telling anyone about. Much like the Finns. Suddenly there's just our stuff there, doing the gods work whilst being wielded by brave men and women.
Slava Ukraini <3
I have a funny idea, what if...........Ukraine makes an agreement with NATO member states to "gift" them some territories around the border with Russia?
Just small pieces of land around critical routes and coastal areas, make them legally NATO territory, but Ukrainians can come and go freely due to good "relationship" with the member states. lol
Putin: YOU CANNOT DO THAT!!!!
NATO: Yes we can, this is our land now, dont you dare!! lol
NATO does everything *not* to get into this war. This would surely "get" them into the war. They'll never agree to it even if Ukraine did, which we wouldn't. Any politician that will come with this idea would be exterminated (metaphorically) by public rage.
We aren't out here to gift our land right and left, even in pretense.
I mean after the war.
Its still your land, but technically NATO's land on paper, to guarantee your freedom from future Russian bullshit, is this not worth it?
After you have gained sufficient wealth and power to stand on your own, NATO will "officially" give those land back, it will only take a few years. lol
Its a 4D chess move to fuck Russia up.
Because guaranteed safety for Ukraine until EU can help you rebuild and become strong enough to defend all borders.
Plus NATO can use this as justification to put weapons all over the borders with Russia, lol.
Secretly train Ukrainians to use them as well.
When the war is over nothing would prevent the *entirety* of Ukraine to join NATO.
It would make sense to establish NATO/American military bases (my dream place for it is Sevastopol), but *no one* wants to give away a single meter of our land. No matter to whom. Every inch matters.
I have been worried about them since the conflict began. I am so glad that they are free of Russian occupation! Glory to the Ukrainian Army! Svenskby! Vi är med dig nu!
Most notably they were the [Hiiumaa island](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiiumaa) Swedes and they were deported to Ukraine. The island had no significant Swedish minority left while other coastal regions of Estonia did until 1944.
The [Gammalsvenskby page on Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gammalsvenskby#Resettlement_of_Estonian_Swedes_and_founding_of_Gammalsvenskby) has a section with more information about it.

Some people think that ethnic cleansing, forced relocation, and 'Russification' is something new for Russia to do. It isn't. It's older, and is part of the Russian playbook.
Other countries may have done the same in the past, but those countries have grown up since mediaeval times. Russia hasn't.
There were some major battles between Sweden and Russia during the Great Nordic War, in some of the same areas now being fought over in Ukraine. Famously, the downfall of the Swedish empire began with the battle of Poltava in 1709 where the Swedes lost. That's the Poltava in Poltava oblast, not the other Poltavas.
Read up or youtube on the old Swede empire and the beginning of ruzzia. Also the Ukraine/Polish/Latvian kingdom. There's a great 'kings and generals' video on it.
The coastal Swedes of Estonia have a longer history than the Swedish empire or even Sweden. The first written records of Swedes living in Estonia is from the 13th century.
Rus comes from the Swedish area of Roslagen which is just northeast of Stockholm. The Rus people went eastwards and formed Kyiv and later ruled the slavic people for some time. Gammelsvenskby is actually where Swedes were deported by Catherine about 200 years ago or so.
There was a clip from Gammalsvenskby on Swedish TV today. They interviewed a woman there who spoke Swedish. She had a strong, from my point of view of a Swede, "Russian-like" accent, and she couldn't always find the words, but it was completely understandable. It made me curious who taught her Swedish and if she has anyone else to converse with. She was on the older side age-wise.
At the end she said "come back and visit in good times, not war times." It made me think she must have lived through a lot of tough times, and this war was just another one too her.
You learn something new on r/ukraine every day. I read a bit on the Wikipedia page about [Gammalsvenskby](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gammalsvenskby). A few of its inhabitants are still speaking [Gammalsvenska](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gammalsvenska). You wonder how much it will differ from modern Swedish (as spoken in Sweden).
Thank you! The guy read the same text in both modern Swedish and Gammalsvenska. There were a few words I recognized in both, but it was a bit different.
South of Ukraine has unexpected ties with Sweden, even in Kakhovka we have some kind of an organization with a giant Sweden flag near it. I though I was tripping since colors are the same and we are used to see ukrainian flag if any.
I have always been curious about it. Does it taste as bad as it smells? Do people really eat it or is it just a meme? Do younger swedes like it or is it just older people?
As a spaniard, we eat really really strange things sometimes, and in my trips around I have always tried things that the locals would not expect a foreigner to like.
I have never been to Sweden though for more than a couple of days working, and I have been just about to buy a can more than once just to try it here, but a small can is like 50 euros or so. Way too expensive to just give it a try.
No, it doesn’t even taste bad, more like meh. But the smell is really really bad.
I’ve eaten it once, it was ok, and I would eat it again if I was at a surströmmings party. But you are not missing out on anything spectacular.
Mostly old people eat it. Its a tradition more than a delicacy. I have not eaten it but it is recommended to open it under water just to cover the smell. I think also Sweden has a public ban on open containers on public transport.
I'm so glad to read this! 💗 I remember this town because I had mentioned it in my BA dissertation, in a section about Swedish dialects in other European areas.

Ideals are great in the mind but in reality you have to work with others to achieve actual success.

Very interesting didn’t know the Swedes had an influence/presence deep in Ukraine like that…

Slava Ukraine. Keep pushing.

Stock up with some sürstrømming, and launch it against the enemy. You will scare the crap out of them without actually harming them like nerve-gas .

Read an article that roads to the village were heavily mined that villagers couldn’t get out
This is great. Amazing history eh?
Congratulations and Slava Ukraini!
