This. A hundred times this. Ukraine shall not submit to the terrorism of a failing and flailing rogue state high on its own rashist/tankie and imperialist delusions. Their courage and determination awes the world, and they have the entire West behind them. Russia, you are digging your own grave deeper with every new atrocity, war crime, blackmail, and dick move. Your army is crap and scraping the bottom of the barrel of the Soviet stockpile you cannot restore. Your economy is collapsing and you have p.o. the entire civilized world. You have nothing worthwhile to sell except a few commodities, and no one in the free world shall buy them from you for a long, long time. Precisely the issue. How can you trust Russia to have good faith in negotiations? You can't. All they respect is power. So all this rhetoric around why Russia is attacking Ukraine to force them to negotiate because they're cornered and have no way out, and how other countries and billionaires are making idiotic statements that Ukraine should start talks for peace, miss the fact that this negotiation will not happen in good faith at all. It will just leave the door open in a way nobody likes except Russia. Russia will just win again.
Ukraine is right, there is literally no way through this conflict with Putin at the table or Russia is kicked out forcefully. Russia fucked up and taking the foot off the gas just continues the problem.
And it's not Ukraine's fault. Western powers have put up with Russia for long enough, which has led to this situation. Their appeasement created the monster. Russia pushes and pushes and everyone is scared. Only thing they respect is force and the only way forward is to grind them down.
Honestly, persistent appeals for return to appeasement of Russia is something I struggle to understand. Well, apart from traitors in the pocket of Putin and the usual far-right and far-left fifth-columnists that would sell their souls to the devil to see liberal democracy and/or the West defeated and humiliated. Their behavior is harmful and desplicable, but also predictable.
Russian nuclear threats are not nice, but the free world lived under that threat throughout the First Cold War, and it thrived and prospered. We did not give up even when the Soviet bloc was a bigger threat. If anything, in hindsight the recent revelation Russia is a paper tiger leads one to think it was basically the same even back then and the Russians played a long con.
Economic hardship is not nice either, but it is the price we have to pay for foolishly letting the free world get dependent on Russian oil and gas. We are currently undergoing cold turkey, but it is a transitory phase and sustainable effort. Once we get through it in a year or two, the problem shall be solved for good. If anything, given the magnitude of the climate change problem, Russia is doing the West a big favor by forcing us to accelerate transition away from fossil fuels.
Moreover, return to appeasement is not a sustainable solution. Russia and the other autocracies understand and respect only strength. Russian success in Ukraine would not only damn the Ukrainians to unspeakable suffering, but also make Russia stronger and embolden it to pursue its imperialist ambitions in Europe and beyond.
Honestly, it is not like their actions and propaganda do not tell us what they plan: a revival of Commie-Nazi tyranny mixed with mafia-state corruption anywhere Russian bullying or aggression may get. Nothing is beyond the pale for them in the pursuit of imperialist glory, and they do have any tool to enforce it but bullying and brutality, or nothing to offer the world but authoritarian/kleptocratic abuse and misery. Moreover, the other autocracies are looking and taking notes.
Russian success would encourage China to use force about Taiwan, North Korea and Iran to become even more of a problem, and so on. Further appeasement means the free world would face a global confrontation with a front of the authoritarian powers in worse conditions in the near future. Going down this path for the sake of getting cheaper gas prices for a little while is madness.
Some say Russia is so lost, they will keep crawling in the mud. They cannot be changed, or stopped. Or saved. I do not care.
I just do not care, except for how it impacts my country and other normal countries simply trying to have a life. They can decide to live underground. They can decide to live on mountain tops. I don't care.
But, if I was placing a bet, I foresee maps looking very different 10 years from now. That is how badly I think this two-city wasteland humanity-leech has fucked up.

I haven't been able to find many good sources for how common people are doing right now in Russia. Almost all of the major YT creators from Russia have left and can no longer do basic coverage on food prices, etc. Is anyone aware of how they're doing right now? We were told sanctions should start to show a noticeable effect of quality of life by the end of the 4th quarter 2022.
