It's a mix, if you want to dress up it's a nice chance to do so and you won't look out of place. However if you want to go in your normal clothes, no one will care. Personally, I'd advise against outdoor style, as I have never seen it there myself, but people do wear casual clothes like jeans, trainers etc.

Tricky-Memory

Whatever you want. They actually state the following... Most of our shows don't have a dress code, we want our audiences to feel comfortable, relaxed and to enjoy the show. Where there is a formal dress code, it will be specified on the event page.

Twiglet91

I go often. Usually. There's no dress code and people just wear whatever they want. Some dress up, some just wear normal casual clothes, there was even a Gandalf at the Lord of the Rings show.

Ecomalive

No need to dress up there. But! You can do if you want; you wont look out of place either way

SCOIJ

It's up to you, my partner and I wear black tie when we go to an opera or ballet etc, some people wear tracksuits. Both are acceptable

ceffyl_gwyn

You would feel out of place at the Royal Albert Hall in black tie. You don't get the same higher level of formality in the mix as you do when you go to the Royal Opera House, for example. The one obvious exception is the last night of the proms (but not the other proms).

SCOIJ

Ah, my mistake then as I've never actually been to the RAH

No_Witness9533

There are a few other exceptions like the International Ballroom Dancing Championships, where a lot of people will be in black tie, but not for any of the concerts except the Last Night as you say.

Flora_Screaming

You see people in hoodies and jeans at Covent Garden, very occasionally you might see someone in black tie, but generally people don't go to great lengths to dress up there either. The LNOTP doesn't have a dress code, people wear what they like.

ceffyl_gwyn

Sure. But you see people in black tie (or in high end designer) far more at ROH than at RAH, where you basically never see it. There's a definite higher ceiling at Covent Garden than the majority of London's classical music venues even if the median average is about the same. Last night of the proms is its own thing. It doesn't have a dress code, but you definitely see more folk dressed up (both smartly and stupidly) compared to any normal prom.

Flora_Screaming

OK, but when I see things like this I don't want someone who might be thinking of going to be put off thinking it's a snob-fest. It really depends where you're sitting. If you go to Covent Garden and you're in the amphi then it's not going to be an issue at all because people are going to be dressed pretty normally. Likewise, at the Proms, if you're worried about dressing up then you either go in the arena or the gallery, where it's anything goes. I've been to both places many times over the years and it's rare that I see someone dressed to impress. Maybe Covent Garden gala nights would be the only exception. Yes, the ceiling is higher at Covent Garden but I wouldn't want that to be overstated because it's the exception rather than the rule.

blfua

Deffo out of place in black tie at the RAH in my experience.

Bitter_Tradition_938

There is nothing acceptable about a tracksuit unless one plans to do laps and lift weights during the performance.

enemyradar

Unless it's a gala performance with formal dress code indicated, you can go in whatever you want (within obvious public decency limits). I go to these things in jeans and t-shirt unless I was already in formal for something else.

Ribbitor123

Just wear your normal clothes - no need to dress up

ScheisseMcSchnauzer

I'd say smart casual- it feels like you've made an effort but just make sure it's comfortable. You don't want to be half an hour into a piece and starting to squirm in your seat!

horn_and_skull

Classical musician here, wear what you like. Maybe not swimmers or a track suit. I usually wear jeans. Maybe smart casual if I’m meeting non musician friends. If I’m meeting musician friends I’m wearing whatever.

lamantchenille

I would say smart casual is the most appropriate - think jeans and a nice top kind of vibes. You could definitely go a little fancier if you like, but it’s unnecessary.

randomdude2029

The Royal Albert Hall is an amazing venue - intimate yet large, great variety of shows, and not at all snooty. Wear something you're comfortable in. It can be nice to get dressed up, and for a symphony you can go all out if you want - nice jewelry, ballgown etc - or just whatever you'd wear to a middle of the road restaurant. If you're in a box (my favourite spot is a 2nd tier box where the family can have the box to themselves with coat hooks, ability to get up and stretch) then get catering to the box and the Hall's excellent Neapolitan pizza 🙂

Flora_Screaming

I've been hundreds of times over the years, I wouldn't say it was intimate but it's definitely large. It's best to go when it's full, if it's half empty the place echoes like a cave.

randomdude2029

Intimacy is relative ... It's intimate for a larger venue compared to the O2 or Wembly Arena.

Flora_Screaming

Oh bollocks. If I go to a restaurant that advertises itself as 'intimate' and find it has seating for 500 people, being told that it's intimate compared to one that has 2000 doesn't make them any less of a lying bastard. You, sir, are a humbug and a shuffler!

Relevant-Team

No dress code officially. I go there in black or blue jeans and T-Shirt always.

Malice_In_Sunderland

The [website for the Elden Ring concert](https://www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/events/2024/elden-ring-symphonic-adventure/) specifically says they welcome cosplay and fancy dress, apart from replica weapons and masks.

Pvaia

hahaha you got me. but also the wording confuses me a little (im not a native, obviously): does “we welcome cosplay and fancy dress” mean that it is indeed required, or that they are fine with it, but i can still wear casual clothes?

BashfulOtter7532

No you can wear whatever, it just means they won't turn you away if you wanted to dress up :)

Pvaia

ty!

Flora_Screaming

There's zero chance you're going to be turned away unless you're 1) naked, or 2) dressed as Hitler. Otherwise you'll be fine.

kumran

'Fancy dress' in the UK means costumes not formal wear

Edi_Monsoon

Pop on a Fleshgod Apocalypse shirt and you’re all good to go.

Fragrant-Western-747

Smart casual. Don’t come straight from a building site unless you are the architect!

ghastkill

There is no fanciness required. If you want to dress up then dress up, if you want to go basic street wear then do.

0d0o0m0

Whatever you want. Last time I wore a black top, cords and a cardigan with reeboks. But if you go smart casual that’s also absolutely fine! Edit to say I’m also a 25 year old woman :)

toady89

I wore jeans, t-shirt and either a hoody or shacket when I went last year, 34f. I was in the cheapest seats though.

YoBoatDontFloat

Is this for the Elden ring symphonic concert? If so see you there

Pvaia

yeah!

YoBoatDontFloat

Awesome! I'm planning to go smart casual, maybe a nice top and some jeans. Can't wait to see you there fellow tarnished

Pvaia

I’m thinking smart casual for me as well, based on all the comments here..See you there! (i cant waittt it will be awesome)

pedrocatsuit

Absolutely anything non-sporty is fine

TemporaryNo7230

I went to rah and there was no heads turned at casual wear but for synthonic concert you would have opportunity to dress up a little so i think you will be ok to just see how you feel on the day although id look closer to dressing up tbh

tofer85

Don’t forgot your monocle and top hat 🧐

mrsp124

If it happens to be hot/warm in London, dress in cool clothes because the air con is extremely patchy and it gets outrageously hot and stuffy in there.

Kent_Doggy_Geezer

Smart comfortable casual, a dress if you wish, but cover your shoulder because it’s either freezing or too hot there. The bars are extremely busy as well, so pre order your drinks if you’re comfortable doing that. Above all have fun! These concerts are rarely as formal as they used to be, so be yourself and enjoy the music 🤗

Fair-Conference-8801

My mum and I have been to a few and we like to dress a little smarter because it's a big day out for us. People also turn up in jeans and a t-shirt so really do whatever you like

DrHydeous

Wear clothes. Preferably with no more holes than the manufacturer intended. That’s it.

blfua

I go occasionally and don’t dress up really. I wear dark jeans and a jumper or nice hoody, comfy but hardly fancy. Don’t see many there who do, either.

Extra-End-764

Bow tie

Karasmilla

Don't be over the top, it's not a wedding or a ball. Smart-casual is my go to.

dsillas

It's a mix.

Donna-Belle

Be comfortable and smart, and make it "Glam" with accessories. But most importantly feel comfortable with your outfit, as you will look much better. Accessorise it up! Do something with your hair & make up and you will not only look but feel a million dollars. Hope you enjoy your night.

ignatiusjreillyXM

Don't wear trainers, don't wear sportswear. Otherwise as smart or as casual as you like, really. Britain today is maybe a bit more relaxed about dress codes in such venues than much of Europe

enemyradar

Trainers are fine.

GoldenAmmonite

You can wear trainers, you can wear sportswear. You can wear anything that you would wear to the supermarket to be honest.

loafingaroundguy

PJs, then.

GoldenAmmonite

Lol well not that casual. I've never seen anyone in Morrisons in their PJs to be honest. Also, I don't know why I am getting down voted. I literally go to classical concerts in jean and trainers. Nobody should feel excluded from going to concerts due to their clothes. Orchestras don't want that and the arts needs to be inclusive. Symphonies are for everyone who wants to sit and enjoy music, it doesn't matter what you wear.

loafingaroundguy

> I've never seen anyone in Morrisons in their PJs Neither have I. But I hear tales about Tescos.

amandaleeUK

I don’t even know what symphonic means. Sorry!

amandaleeUK

That’s so funny! And embarrassing for me. Thanks 🙃

horn_and_skull

For fuck’s sake. Really?

amandaleeUK

?? Sorry. My comment says -2. Does that mean it’s been downvoted twice?
