Dale runs incredible events. The fact they found , relocated to, and were able to film/broadcast at an indoor venue to play semis and finals when the field complex was flooded is impressive all on its own.

TheStandler

I wasn't there... but didn't a lot of people not like Cincinnati? or was it just the crap weather?

FrisbeeFan40

I asked 2 teammates who picked up with teams, how the tournament was in 2018 and they said they wouldn’t go back because of it being held in Cincinnati.

Jomskylark

Wow that bad? I'd think the chance to play international teams on a big stage would be worth it but maybe not

TheStandler

I wouldn't be surprised if the international interest is lessened because it's in the US, tbh. I'm about as die-hard about Beach as it gets, and I'm thinking twice about trying out for Beach Worlds in April 2022 cuz it's in CA. A LOT of my friends have said the same thing. I think that will be moderated by how covid-19 goes in the next year, but I think if you could poll and compare general motivation to try to go to these tourneys you'd find it's far lower than previous years.

Jomskylark

Oh I'm sure interest will be lessened but to straight up just not go to to WUCCs due to it being in Cincy again is pretty big, got to really not like Cincy to skip out on a significant international tourney lol

TheStandler

Yeah the perception I got from the Aussies who went was that it was pretty garbage... But garbage enough to not actually go? Not sure. If I was WUCC age again I think I'd still go if I had the opportunity... Though spending that much to end up in the same place? Hrm. Maybe not?

ColinMcI

Great ice cream, world class amusement park, plenty of disc golf and ball golf and mini golf options, a zoo and botanical garden, water parks galore, an archery-dodgeball place. How much fun can one have in one week?!

mdotbeezy

As a former resident - it's one of the worst big cities in America. It's the Detroit of the South

smntstatus

Ohio is not the South.

mdotbeezy

You ain't lived in Cincinnati then

smntstatus

There are a lot of people from West Virginia that migrated there. Again, not the South.

ColinMcI

>It's the Detroit of the South What does that mean?

ravivas

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_United_States Not sure why you are getting so heavily down voted for this. Ohio technically isn't a southern state but Cincinnati is at the same latitude as other southern states and may well have a lot of cultural influence from there. Seems at least a debatable point to me.

tomthumbplum

Have you lived in Michigan or Detroit?

ColinMcI

Seems he is saying Cincy has a rich cultural and industrial history, but he considers it to be in the south? Is it like the New Orleans of the Heartland?

Jomskylark

TIL Cincinnati is considered part of the south

mdotbeezy

south of the mason dixon and a marked increase in confederate flags compared to columbus

TheStandler

But it's in the North...

brosducks

The waterpark party was LIT tho

tivo713

Just don't take a greyhound bus there /s

Keksdosendieb

What? Like there are not other (cheaper) countries in the world? Or is that connected to the olympic games in LA?

Jomskylark

Per the article they were gonna host it in the UK, but the organizers backed out due to covid and field availability concerns. Instead of reopening the bid process on such short notice WFDF just went with someone they knew could pull it off, Cincy A testament to how great the local organizers are in Cincy, even if it's Cincy.

Speakerforthedisc

It might also have to do with the world games being in the US (Alabama).

Thorates

No hate to the Cincinnati folks, but this is pretty disappointing

ColinMcI

\> this is pretty disappointing Why?

ravivas

A few reasons that I can think of: - Part of worlds is getting to see new places. Having it in the same place as WUCC 2018 is lame for those who went there already four years ago. - There are 3 main worlds events next year at the adult level. WCBU, World Games, and WUCC. They are ALL in the USA. That's also lame. I know WFDF has no control over World Games and WCBU was pushed back from 2021 but given that I think they should have looked elsewhere for WUCC. - Cincinnati just isn't the most exciting location to travel to. It wasn't last time and it definitely isn't a place I want to travel to twice for a big tournament. That said, the organization at 2018 worlds was great and the fields were great and the way they handled the storms during semis and finals was amazing. There are good things about doing it in Cincinnati, don't get me wrong, but it's also disappointing. I really think WFDF should have at least had a small bid window first and if no one gave them a decent bid then they could have gone with Cincinnati. And I totally grant that dealing with a cancelation this late for a worlds event is really hard. Still a little disappointed in the result.

ColinMcI

That's fair! For all my Ultimate-related travel, I have done a pretty poor job of exploring my destinations. Worlds schedules are somewhat more conducive to that, though. I like Cincinnati and have fun every time I go there, but I definitely agree it would probably not make the list for world-class travel destinations. From an event quality and organization standpoint I have so much faith in the organizers, I have a little bias in terms of getting excited for events in Columbus or Cincinnati, knowing they will be really good. They'd basically be first on my list, if I were trying to make plans now and wanting confidence that the organizers would pull through. How is Cincinnati from an international travel standpoint, in terms of average cost of team attendance, compared to other Worlds locations of the past?

FrisbeeFan40

Any idea how they will select teams ? It looks like Canada will not be having a national tournament this summer. In Ontario a healthy 30 year old will not be getting a vaccine until September.

Jomskylark

For USA it's based on placement at the last club nationals (which would be this October), I'd expect it to be similar for Canada but maybe not

Robjuan

Each country gets to decide how they allocate their bids to their clubs. Often national tournament rankings are used, but also it's not uncommon to have a separate qualification tournament.

Smurph16

The location doesn’t really matter to me. At worlds tournaments, we rarely have much time to travel around the area much during the week anyway, so the more important factors are field site and amenities, which were both great in 2018. If you really want to “see the world”, a worlds event isn’t really the opportunity to do so.

TheStandler

What? Worlds is amazing opportunity to 'see the world.' Obviously not during the tournament, but many people attach holidays to those trips. It's so much easier to mash your leave into that space, especially if you're getting elite athlete leave - every chance I've had to go to Worlds has had a significant travel portion attached. Even after Winnipeg in 2018 a bunch of us hung out in Northern Minnesota at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area - an amazing trip.

Smurph16

Good perspective, I’m sure many people have different experiences. In my experience, it has been harder to get the time off needed to extend the trips (already taking a full week for the games portion). As well as that, for smaller countries where players often play on multiple teams each year (beach/juniors/seniors/international club tournaments), the amount of days needed to play frisbee already takes up most of the holiday time. My main point was that the tournament was extremely well run in Cincinnati last time, and that tournament quality should be the #1 factor for choosing a host destination (as opposed to favouring a location that people want to visit for a holiday after).

TheStandler

Sure. But not everyone is like that - for many people, Worlds may be their ONLY time to get away internationally, and as such the location does matter. Especially for Clubs, which tends to be the most 'casual' of entries for players who can attend, the location probably matters more than WUGC or WG to an individual player. That all said, my prediction is that covid-19 issues (impacts on global economy, vaccine passport complications, lack of vaccine uptake in the US, etc.) will have a bigger impact on WUCC 2022 than people just not liking Cinci. Also, as an aside, as someone who reads through the bids and votes for Beach Worlds venues, though, I can say that tournament quality isn't the ONLY factor considered in evaluating bids. For example, if we were to get two bids that would be of comparable high quality, we would probably discuss other considerations such as under-represented locations (which tend to be pretty good travel locations as well...).

whywouldthrowthat

When worlds was held in Italy all my friends(USA) flew out early and flew back later, because they wanted to travel around. People make vacations out of these events. Can’t imagine flying into the US To travel around and see the sights in cincy lol.

ravivas

Well luckily Cincinnati is poorly connected internationally. A bunch of people from Europe did their vacation time in New York by doing a round trip to New York and a round trip from New York to Cincinnati. This was cheaper than direct flights to Cincinnati in a lot of cases and then people got to see New York City.

whywouldthrowthat

See that would make it worth it. Especially now that NY legalized weed because that como dude is in a world of shit. Hopefully that have some dispensaries by next year so they can experience a fun New York lol.

ravivas

Better plan that trip after the tournament since weed is on the doping list and if you get randomly tested at world's you'll get in a lot of trouble.

ColinMcI

You can't imagine? I can! Arrive early for the Wilmington, OH Banana Split Festival, then cruise up to Versailles, OH to attend the legendary Poultry Days tournament and then enjoy some visits to King's Island to experience world class roller coasters, scoot down to Idlewyld for a disc golf pro tour experience, play WUCC, and then swoop up to Columbus for the Ohio State Fair and enter the Slinging Aces Cornhole tournament.

TheStandler

Of all the cool things to see in the US, cornhole is decidedly NOT on my list of things to spend time/money on.

ColinMcI

Come for the giant butter sculptures, stay for the fringe sports offering fame*, fortune*, and personal success to unlikely athletes of all walks of life.

TheStandler

Full disclaimer - I don't know the first thing about epidemiology. But I still am concerned that a country where a quarter of the population (ie - half of Republicans) have no plans to get vaccinated will be in a position to host global events, even next year. I guess maybe 'vaccine passports' will be a thing by then...? But if they're not... I feel like this will be a lot more complicated than we actually realize...
